🔴LIVE 🔴 Chicago Cubs VS Milwaukee Brewers/ Mlb Division Series/October 03 /MLB THE SHOW 25
Let’s go. Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. We’ve got game one of the National League Division Series. It’s the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers. John Shambi alongside Chris Singleton. Postseason baseball. Singi, it’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh, Boo, you just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching players coming out of the bullpin throwing a hundred, some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that’ll live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. You can feel the energy in this building. They are fired up for game one. back with that after this. So, just about set now on the hill here today, Freddy Peralta. How about a scouting report on him? He’s someone you can rely on to provide quality innings in almost every one of his starts. Boo. He knows how to command the mound. His stuff is good and sometimes it’s even better than good. If he gets off to a fast start, look out. It could be a tough day for this lineup. Ready to go here in game one. So up now for Chicago, Michael Bush. And that misses. So we’re off and running in game one. Next offering is in for a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. That one way outside and the count two and one. [Applause] Breaking ball misses down and away. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Left-hand batter waits. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Gets it to first. One out in the top of the first. Time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup. Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team and I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Next offering, pop foul off to the right out of play. Peralta in his seventh season. He features a four seam fast, a change up, a curve, and he works in a slider. [Applause] Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Jansen Fields, fires to first. Got him. Two gone after the strikeout. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. And it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Two down, base is empty. Ian Hap up to hit and first offering is fouled off. [Music] Swang and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and that one is gone. He’ll circle the bases. Just like that, they move in front. It’s one- nothing. Boog. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. [Applause] So two away with nobody on. Here’s Kyle Tucker. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] Two down. Doan. Lifted in the air right center field. That’s a hit. fifth rightielder. Now it’s the right fielder Sea Suzuki [Applause] and ball one to the right fielder. One run across in the frame so far here in game one of the NLDS. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. A gigantic blast. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 3 nothing. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrists to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. Base is empty with two away. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. And that’s through there for a strike. Two outs. One and one. Drilled out towards left center field. That one’s back there. Gone. [Applause] They go backto back. His second home run of the series. And they add a run. It’s four nothing. Back-to- back home runs. And they keep adding to their lead. Took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there, too. He gave it a great effort, but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. Pete Crow Armstrong, the next Cub to hit. First pitch just misses. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. Give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Collins ranging back and that’ll do it. But they go deep three times in the inning and score four. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers nothing back here at American Family Field. And our pitcher in this game, Jameson Tyion. Well, he comes at hitters with a five pitch mix. So for him, it’s always interesting to see how he utilizes those weapons. He may lean on one or two pitches depending on how things are going and how things are working. But if he can control four or even five of those offerings, look out hitters. It’s going to be a tough day, he’s really going to be able to keep those guys off balance. Christian Yelich, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Swang and a miss and the count is one and two. I think he was sitting off speed there. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. And Earl Hendrickx punches him out. That’s a strike out. Well, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. He tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Now, here is Jackson Chorio. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was out front. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That one outside and it’s two and two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Oh, now this ball is driven into the left center field gap around first and hustling for second. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So runner at second, two down. Now here’s Jake Bowers. And that one upstairs. Well, here’s a chance right here for one of the better hitters on this roster to get him on the board in the first thanks to the three-hole hitter extending the inning. Good at bat with two outs. Ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning. Brewers strand one. They’re down four nothing. Game one of the division series. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Dansby Swanson. Peralta back to work. Swang and a miss. Strike one. Legends really are cemented in the postseason. You think of David Ortiz heroics for the Red Sox. Derek Jeter as Mr. November or Randy Johnson in the 2001 World Series just to name a few. Well, on that idea of postseason reputations, Boo, got to mention players like Carlton Fisk, Reggie Jackson, and Madison Bumgner. We were doing that game. Those guys really shine in the toughest moments. Line drive, base hit, man aboard on the leadoff single. Perfect example right there. A hitter who hits the ball on the outside part of the plate the other way has to trust his hands and let the ball travel a little bit deeper. Matt Shaw, the next Cub to hit. [Applause] Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Swanson gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Applause] swing and a miss and it’s 0 and two. Time to check on our umpires. Earl Hrix calling balls and strikes. Yeah, well-liked umpire Boo. Pretty consistent with his zone, so if you’re familiar with him and how he works, you won’t get too surprised by anything. Sometimes he’ll give a little bit off the corner, but nothing too crazy at all. Sets him down on strikes. Couldn’t pull the trigger on a fast ball at the knees. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. BCH takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. [Applause] The next offering misses and the count now two and nothing. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. two. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul man at first. One away. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Applause] Double play ball to second. The underhand flip. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Now batting Nicoer. So here’s her now. He’s 0 for one. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing content to deliver power. [Applause] And the curve is down and in. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That misses and now two and 0. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Two outs. Pitch misses outside and that’s ball three. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. And that is that. Cubs leave one, they lead four nothing. Bottom half of inning number two. Now at the plate, South Fre bunting for a hit. He pops it up. And that’s a bunt single. That was placed perfectly. It doesn’t surprise anyone when he gets on base by dropping down a bond. I mean, this is just the latest example of him using his speed to his advantage and showing off his skills with the bat. That was very nice. Now, the third baseman swing and a ball lifted in the air. Suzuki makes the grab and there’s one down. Batting seven, left fielder Isaac Collins. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. [Applause] First pitch misses. He’s so solid. Calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air. You just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air. Next offering is in for a strike. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Horner tosses to first. He’s two down. Batting eight, the short stop, Andrew. Andrew Monisterio dub now for the Brewers. I love you, Andy. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Ruther at second, two down. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And there’s a rocket into the outfield now. A long throw home. Head first slide safe at the plate. It’s 4-1. Comes through with the RBI. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Danny Jansen to hit here. [Applause] There’s a swing and a miss. strength. 01 now. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Make it happen, Brewers. Pitch is in the dirt and the count’s even at two. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And he chases that one. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. back here in Milwaukee. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder in half. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Swings and miss has struck him out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. So here’s Kyle Tucker now. Singled and scored his first time. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Tucker, former fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Astros. This guy’s turned into a whale of a player. Tucker hits for power. He’s got 30 homer power, but the strikeout rate is under 20%. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. One out, base is empty. [Applause] That missed by a lot. Now one and two. [Applause] Good eye in that spot. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s some times where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there. That was a tough battle, man. So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that, it’s got to feel good out there on the mound. That was a fun at bat to watch. Two outs. Base is empty. Sea Suzuki will hit next. Just missed. Two down. Doon outside now. 2 and0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Gets the outside corner with that one. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. That one pushed foul fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. [Applause] And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. stepping in Christian Yelich. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Fouled off to the right. And now two and one on its way to the corner and that drops foul. [Applause] stays alive. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. His first at bat was a strikeout. [Applause] In for a strike went with the sweeper. And this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And there’s the strike. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Next offering misses down and away. [Applause] Got him swinging. Tasked with one, two, and three to start this inning, but no trouble so far. I’m sure he’d love to strike out the side here. Make a little statement, but you got to be composed in this spot. Focus on getting this next guy. You got two good outs. Want to get the third one and avoid the middle of that lineup coming up with a base runner. Could become dangerous. Terra now at the plate as he swings through strike one. [Applause] Comes up empty. That one the other way. Swanson fires over to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Brewers go down quietly. And this is still a 41 ball game. And we’re back. And now the catcher comes up to him. Carson Kelly. Kelly measures 6’2 in 210 lbs and he was a second round pick back in 2012. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Pitch count is pretty high and they’ve played four runs already. So, I think it’s safe to say their game plan is working out pretty well right now. So they forced the starter to put in a lot of work and they’ve been able to get to him for some runs and hopefully that bullpin phone is working today. Fought off foul. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Cro Armstrong in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. One down, base is empty. That one almost got him. [Applause] popped up to the left into foul ground. Hauls it in for the up next for the Cubs. Shorts stop Dansby Swanson. Two down, base is empty. And now Dansby Swanson. one for one with a single so far. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. Top of the zone for a called strike. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender, but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. High-fly ball out to left field. Collins settles underneath it and makes the play and that’s out number three. Nothing doing here this half. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Cubs four and the Brewers won. Back here at American Family Field, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Jake Bowers. [Applause] [Music] The pitch misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Boo. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. [Music] And that one wrapped foul. Almost got him. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Freel stands in now and watches strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And that one pulled foul. Next offering upstairs. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. Makes a nice running catch. And there’s two away. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. [Applause] Number 21. The next to hit takes outside. Next offering is in for a strike. Two down, nobody on here in game one of the NLDS. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Next pitch just misses and it’s a full count. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Nobody left for Milwaukee. And they trail it 4-1. Here comes a new arm for the Brewers, Jacob Miserowski. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And stepping in is the speedy Matt Shaw. Struck out looking his first time. Go. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Robert Gasser, the left-hander up and throwing. Not even close there. And it’s one and one. [Applause] Slider misses outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. [Applause] 3-2 now. [Applause] Twins and misses. It’s a strike out. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. Oh, we see it more commonly in the sport these days, but man, a tripledigit fast blown right by someone is still pretty awesome to witness. I mean, you got to be geared up and ready to swing it when a guy like this comes out of the bullpen because that fast ball, it eats. And if you’re not ready, you’re going to be walking back to the dugout. Busch stands in here, takes ball one low, base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the fifth. [Applause] That one in triple digits. [Applause] So a foul ball makes it one and two. He’s begging. Give me that pitch one more time. A hanging change up just out in front. [Applause] And now it’s even up. And there’s a ball. [Applause] One down, base is empty. Swinging at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. Up next for the Cubs. So, a man aboard, Nicoer, the next Cub to hit. Bowl for two in this one. [Applause] Rudder takes off on the ground right side terrain. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Now battle left. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Ian Half. He’s already homered in this game. [Applause] It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over. That ends the frame. One left for the Cubs, but they lead it four to one. Game one of the Division Series. Up now for Milwaukee. Isaac Collins. Collins. [Applause] Tao back to work. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Well, these Brewers, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times, and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Andrew Monasterio up now for the Brewers. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And that drops in for a strike. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Next pitch is outside and the count even one and one. A short stop. Takes a ball. [Applause] That one misses. Now three and one. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. And a 3-1 on the way. Foul ball. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. The Cubbies leading by three. Last half of inning number five. Got him. And he’s up to eight strikeouts in this one. Now it’s Chance to hit. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Johnson [Applause] up the middle corner on to first and Milwaukee is set down in order back here in Milwaukee. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And here’s the DH for the Cubs. Kyle Tucker. Fast for a strike. Tucker, who’s been an allstar and a gold glover. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] and one and two. O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. cut on and lifted in the air. Yell should have it. One away. [Applause] Now batting rightielder Sea Suzuki. [Applause] swings and misses and it’s 0 and one. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Right side. Freighic has a beat on it, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there are two outs. Up next for the Cubs. Two outs. Base is empty. And up next for Chicago, Carson Kelly. He’s already homerred here in this one. Little bit high and it’s one and0. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. And that’s in the dirt. Two down, nobody on here in game one of the NLDS. [Applause] And that is in for a strike. Two and two. [Applause] Two outs. Now it’s three and two. [Applause] on the ground to the left and that’s just fouled. [Applause] Three and two now. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Oh, very close with the location right there. It’s just tough to get rewarded on the call with pitches near the top of the strike zone. And next for the Cubs, Pete Crow Armstrong. [Applause] First pitch and that’s in for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. [Applause] Cut on and missed at 10 and one. And it’s one and two. [Applause] pumping serious gas at 102 on that one. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. Top of the order, do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the six. Here’s the center fielder, Christian Yelich. Yell. Sliced hard but fouled. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Another 02 count right here. Pitcher just in the driver’s seat. He can go anywhere he wants to go right here. Good job to fight that one off. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Ball one there. [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. Now pitching for Shota Imanaga is forced to the mound after the injury. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Next is the designated hitter, Jackson Chorio, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. [Applause] And he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. [Applause] That one drilled left field. That’s back. And that one hops the wall into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. One out, runner at second. Bryce Terra up now for the Brewers. One for two. And there’s a foul ball. Milwaukee one swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Caught him looking for the K. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive. That’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after it. So next it’s the Brewers cleanup hitter, Jake Bowers. Ball one, no strikes. runner at second. Two down here in the bottom of the sixth. [Applause] [Applause] Yeah, a foul ball. [Applause] on the ground right side. Horner over to first and that is the third out of the inning. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. Onto the seventh here in game one. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers won. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jar Kanig. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Dansby Swanson stands in. He is singled and he has flyed to left. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Freeland makes the catch and there’s one gone. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting third base. So up next, Matt Shaw. Well, with both starters out of this ball game, it now becomes a battle of the bullpens. And just seeing which manager can match Shaw better and who’s able to get to the finish line. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing and one. Movement in the bullpen. Robert Gasser, the lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Mere the right-hander also getting loose. Base is empty, one away here in the late stages of game one. That’s inside. right through there for a strike. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s two down. Now batting first. Michael Bush the next Cub to hit. One for three. [Applause] Hit on the ground to the right side. Can’t glove it cleanly, but they get the out at first. And that’ll do it for the inning. So they make short work of them there midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers won. Now pitching for the We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Caleb Thebar. Caleb Thear up now for Milwaukee. Selick. The Brewers in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. On the ground. Swanson on the run. Sends it over to first in time. Got him. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Here’s the third baseman. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Drew Pomerance appears to be getting loose. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. And one and one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. Oh, he hit him and that got him pretty flush. Now, the left fielder, Isaac Collins. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. [Applause] Ground ball left side. Shaw to second. Double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. So they go quietly there. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers won. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Nick Mir. Nick Mirs. Nico her will come up to hit. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And a pop off right side foul territory. Bowers makes the grab. One away. Now batting left fieldielder Ian H. So up now for Chicago, Ian Hap. Former first round pick out of the University of Cincinnati. Grew up in Pittsburgh. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. And it’s fouled away. Ripped on the ground to second. Throw over to Bowers. and a couple of quick outs. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent pace. Two down, base is empty. So now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole, Kyle Tucker. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] And a base hit up the middle and that extends the inning. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Couldn’t get any air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. Got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Two outs, runner at first. And now the right fielder, Seya Suzuki. Fast ball for a strike [Applause] at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. is going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs. Got him looking. Third out and that ends the frame. Cubs leave one as they hold on to a 4-1 lead. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Aaron Savali. and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Up now for Milwaukee, Andrew Monasterio. Andrew Monasterio. [Music] [Applause] Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in and that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating to the right side and that one finds its way through. Had a good start to the inning. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. [Applause] Danny Jansen up now for the Brewers. Swanging a highfly ball in the air left field. half going back feeling for the wall as he makes the catch. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Here comes Christian Yelich 0 for three with three strikeouts. [Applause] That misses and that’s ball one. The Brewers trailing by three here in game one of the NLDS. [Applause] [Applause] That misses the zone and the count. Two and one. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. And that forces the runner to hold on at second. Two on with one away. All over that one right there. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. Big spot. And here comes Jackson Cheerio. That one misses. Ball one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. With the tying run at the plate here, the bottom half of the eighth inning. That one finds the zone. One ball, one strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. And that one hit to first into the outfield. Base hit around third. Safe. And now just a two-run deficit. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on. You just got to battle. [Applause] This is Bryce Terra [Applause] in there at the knees. Rudders are at the corners. One away. On the ground to second. Might be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. And he’ll eat it and be happy with the out. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Aaron Savali done for the day and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. [Applause] Drew Pomeat into the game. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. [Applause] Jake Bowers getting ready to hit 0 for three in this one. Well, they have to believe they can finish this comeback now. Time’s running out, but they’re in striking distance. [Applause] in the air right side. Suzuki sizing this one up, drops into the glove, and that will end the inning. They get two runs on three hits, no errors, and one left. We’re on to the ninth in game one. It’s the Cubs four and the Brewers three. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. DL Hall now pitching for the Brewers. Number 37, DL Hall. One-run game. Now Carson Kelly. [Music] liner and that should be extra bases around first heading for two and he greetss the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. And now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. And a breaking ball misses outside man at second to third and it goes just foul. Ball to strike the pitch. Foul ball there. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Missed with a change up. Two and two. [Applause] Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one back there out of here. He made him pay for that one. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 6-3. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. A slider right down the middle of the plate. It’s like slow motion for a hitter. You’re just licking your chops, waiting for it to arrive, and you want to hit it a long way. And he did. [Applause] Swanson digs in and first offering is fouled off. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. on the ground right side. Whips it to first. Now one gone in the ninth. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And now Matt Shaw. That one catches the zone and that is strike one. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Oh, he’s really working that inside corner with the cutter. I tell you what, I hated that pitch. So tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair. Throws the first in time. Up next for the Cubs, first baseman Michael Bush. And now the first baseman Michael Bush. Milwaukee. That clips the zone. 0 and one. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here in the late stages of game one. That one lined in left field and that’s base hit. Up next, nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. Here’s Nico her and a good fast ball to start him off at strike one [Applause] on the ground to third. They take the force out and that is that. Cubs had two on this homer. It’s now 63. This is the National League Division Series on the show. And here’s the closer to try and finish off game one. Brad Keller. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Up now for Milwaukee. Z Freelick Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. That one finds the zone at strike one. fouls it back with two strikes and takes low for ball one. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. [Applause] That one missed. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. He steps on the bag. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. He’s two outs away now. The third baseman. [Applause] Pitch misses there. And that is ball one. The Cubs trying to close out a three-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine. Just missed. [Applause] that one down the line, dives and he can’t hang on. He beats the throw and so they end up with some speed on at first. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher and now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. 0 for three with three ground outs. [Applause] There’s the strike. [Applause] The Cubbies leading by three. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. [Applause] Pitch misses and now it’s even. One and one. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Milwaukee sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Everyone’s trying to elevate the ball in today’s game, but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground, it’s going to find some holes. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. So, digging in, Andrew Monisterio, [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Brewers. [Applause] The tying run at the plate. Late swing. Fouled off. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. One out. Rudders at first and second. [Applause] Center field. Crow Armstrong should have it. Brings it in. Out number two. [Applause] So now a pinch hitter for the catcher, William Contras. He comes to the plate in a huge spot in this one. [Applause] Fouled off down the right side. [Applause] Laser base hit coming home. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. Only down two now. It’s 64. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity. And he came through for his club right there. Big at bat coming up with Christian Yelich stepping in. You got to feel like there’s a pretty good chance this game is going to turn on one swing. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Lots of anxious fans in the ballpark right now. You can feel it. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth [Applause] and fouled off. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. just couldn’t catch up. [Applause] One strike away from securing game one. That one not close. And the count is two and two. battling here as he fouls it away. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Next pitch misses. Full count three and two. Try to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. And that’ll load the bases. just missed his spot on the inside right there. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score too. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. [Applause] And that one just misses. A ball and no strikes. He is going to sleep well tonight if his team can come through with the win. Two outs. Both the tying and winning runs are on. [Applause] Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. And another ball at risk of walking in a big run here. And these fans really letting them hear it as well. Bryce Terra in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So the tying run at second fast for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Ball four and a run comes in to score. He’s really gotten himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall. This inning’s definitely getting away from him. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Brad Keller won’t go any further and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching Taylor Rogers comes on now. Definitely a huge at bat in this game coming up right here. But with two outs, he’s just got to focus on getting one batter. And this should be fun. So bases all loaded up. Bryce Terang up now for the Brewers trying to deliver as the hero. This is a big spot for a big time player. [Applause] Oh, he hit him and that brings home a run. Two outs. Base is full. Next for the Brewers, Jake Bowers. Oh, how he’d love to walk it off right here. [Applause] First pitch misses. Activity in the bullpen. Andrew Kitridge up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. [Applause] This to third. Slings it across. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. But a magical comeback is complete here in the last half of the ninth as they fight back to even it up. And we’re all even at six apiece. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Trevor McIll Trevor McIll [Applause] tied at six. So up now for Chicago in half. Well, it’s kind of deflating. You blow that lead in the bottom of the ninth. So here’s a new opportunity. Hit the reset button. try to get some more runs and then close it out in the bottom half of this one. [Applause] Inside and it’s 2 and 0. [Applause] Late swing fouled to the left. [Applause] Pitch is in for a strike and the count is even. Two and two. [Applause] [Music] That was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Kyle Tucker, the next Cub to hit [Applause] now. A pop up on the infield. Terra makes the grab and there’s two gone. Well, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. [Applause] That one to first. Bowers tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. And the Cubs go 1 2 3. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. On to the bottom of inning number 10. And we’re all even at six apiece. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Up now for Milwaukee. Selick. Sal. [Music] Rogers back to work. That’s a strike thanks to the sweeper. [Applause] That misses the zone. One and one. [Applause] That was the sweeper, but it missed. [Applause] Oh, three on one. [Applause] Fouls one away and now three and two. [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Here’s the third baseman. [Applause] First offering and it just misses. Line and a base hit into right. So, a man aboard now with one away. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. One down, runner at first. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. [Applause] Here goes the runner. That one hammered, but pulled fouled. Snap throw to first and he’s back in safely with the winning run on at first here in game one of the NLDS. And there’s a ball with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. [Applause] And that one is inside. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. One down. Winning run on first. on the ground left side. Six, four, three. It’s a double play and that’ll do it for the inning. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam back here at American Family Field. And here’s the catcher, Carson Kelly. Go Brewers. Here we go. Brewers. Swing. And a ball driven out to center. That’s going back. Back some more. See you later. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And the Cubs have the lead now. It’s 76. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. And it’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. And now here is Pete Crow Armstrong. That’s outside. Ball one. [Music] [Applause] Breaking ball through there for a strike. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. You’re in the late stages of game one. That pitch clips the outside corner and the count one and two and that skips in the dirt. spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball and that’s just fouled. And that’s in the dirt. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. And here comes Dansby Swanson. Swanson, former first round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Vanderbilt player in college, college World Series player, all that good stuff. But really coming into his own and a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. One out, base is empty and a run in. We are in the 11th. He swings and fouls one off. [Applause] There we go. Milwaukee ripped to third and caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. Two outs, space is empty. Matt Shaw the next to hit. That one misses. One and0. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across. And we’re here in the top half of the 11th. 101 catches the top of the zone for a strike. [Applause] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. He was a little out front, but did a good job keeping the hands back long enough to foul that pitch off. And down on strikes he goes. That K is his third of the game. Cubs get one on the solo shot and this is now a 76 ball game. You’re watching the National League Division Series on the Show. Back here in Milwaukee, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the shortstop. Andrew Monasterio. Monasterio. Right through there for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder. And that one is lifted in the air. One up, one down. Now batting catcher William Contras. And now it’s William Contrarus. RBI single his last time up. [Applause] first pitch and he just misses. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Trying to close out a one-run lead and we’re in the bottom of the 11th. [Applause] [Music] Pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. Well, an interesting situation. One swing it can tie up the ball game. But if you’re patient and work a walk, then you bring the game-winning run to the plate. This one popped off. Horner under it, brings it in. And there’s two away. Up next for the Brewers. Center fielder Christian. So, last chance for the Brewers. Now, here is Christian Yelich, the MVP in 2018, the runner up in 2019. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one, a oneun lead. And here in extra innings, [Applause] swinging a miss as he was out front that time. [Applause] Rogers one strike away from securing game one. [Music] Here’s a one-two that one missed [Applause] and a ground ball to first and that’s foul. Two down, nobody on here in extra innings. [Applause] He gets there on a slide. Throw to first and that’s the ball game. What a play to finish it.

Wtf this guy's throwing home run pitches right out of the gate? Did any pitcher in history ever throw three home runs in the first inning of a playoff game?.. I gotta look it up…
