This is kinda unpopular but I’d have felt better if we lost fair instead of winning just because of the umpire. I’ve been waiting 8 years for this just for it to be tainted
Who says they would have had an ABS challenges left? They could have used them up by then. Too many what ifs, bc Keller also gets pulled after the HR and Walk
Umpires on their way to exit through the Padres dugout:
Definition of a strike zone ends just below the knee caps in the batters prepared stance. That’s a strike.
I think it was actually a much closer call than the K-zone made it look. When you use the actual “batters kneecap” rule, it looks pretty borderline but as our guy JD would say “not egregious.”
IF we go by k-zone though, then yeah, it was probably closer to egregious than not.
That said, the whole “bases loaded, no outs” is a pretty gracious assumption for the padres, no guarantee that #1 the next guy would have been HBP, and #2 Theilbar(? can’t remember if it was him or somebody else) wouldn’t have been pulled after putting guys on first and second.
The real MVP of this play is Carson Kelley. He framed and pulled it up so quickly he fooled the ump
Honestly, it is what it is. Time to move on and worry about the Brewers.
Honestly, it was close and not blatant. Not much of a complaint.
Everyone wants to jack off over how great “pitch framing” is until a pitch gets framed. I’ve said for years we need an automatic strike zone (full-time, preferably, not just a challenge system, but I’ll take what I can get) because tricking fat, blind senior citizens isn’t something that should be rewarded or lauded
Was it a strike? Who knows? But if you’re going to allow pitch framing to be a legitimate part of the game (in the sense that it does successfully fool umps, Fangraphs WAR includes it for catchers and announcers openly discuss how valuable it is), you don’t get to be upset when a borderline pitch gets called a strike in a big moment
I’m sorry the Padres got eliminated (I’m really not, I’m just being polite) but calls way worse than that are made multiple times every single game. Their season didn’t end because Carson Kelly moved his glove six inches; it ended because they can’t fuckin’ score runs. Same thing when certain Cubs fans got mad at Steve Bartman in 2003. Dude wasn’t even there for game 7, where we got stomped. The real reason we lost is that Moises Alou being a bitch killed the vibes/atmosphere and we limped through game 7
No sympathy
The Padres still had the tying runs on base and failed to bring them home. They had chances after that call. .
I mean, yeah, they have a legit reason to be upset. I just think back to how many times call like that have gone against the Cubbies. And, let’s face reality: umpires need to make a split second decision based on balls going 90+ mph with wicked movement. The fact that they get it night nearly 95% of the time is impressive.
Imagine trusting espn hahahahahahaha go cubs baby!!!
It was obviously a ball. But you can’t pin an entire loss on one at bat. Was the next batter going to hit a game tying homerun? It’s certainly possible, and it sucks that Padres fans will never know. But it was 1 of 27 outs. It sucks, I get it. But it wasn’t a decisive out.
Just let them gripe, we would do the same thing.
No. They do not. The Padres and Cubs both belong to the same group (mlb) that decided to improve the system next year instead of this year. Idk how each independent team voted, but as a collective they agreed to play under a flawed system for another year then one of them got burned. Deal with it.
The K-Zone is actually an imaginary thing. It is not right or wrong. If you invent something that is not real, you can just make believe what it means.
Can’t believe the home plate umpire made them hit 3-26 with RISP in the series and 0-8 in game 3.
Of corse it happened to the wineiest fan base…
Everyone needs to realize that the little box on the TV is not always going to be an accurate strike zone! The pitch was at his knees and was very much within the bounds of an umpire to call a strike. Also, having grown up with an umpire dad (not professional baseball, but 40+ years of umpiring high school and youth baseball), umpires really do not like it when players assume what the call is and react before the call is even made…
Nico was safe. That ends it
They squeezed the Cubs and gifted the Padres all day, live by the sword mofos.
I don’t believe in technology.
Nico was safe
Also taking a knee high fastball on a 3-2 count…gotta swing the bat on those
Yes but I don’t think they’d be all that concerned if that happened to the Cubs so whatever 🤣

Its 2025, anyone disagrees…its just fake news
Call me crazy, but if I were the Padres, I would be looking at their lackluster hitting abilities that game.
