Ethan Cardwell’s HAT TRICK Stuns Golden Knights | Can Sharks Afford to Send Him Down?
Ethan Cardwell’s hat-tick powers the Baby Sharks to a win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Cardwell must be on the Sharks opening night roster. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. We’ll talk about Michael Misa and Sam Dickson as they were both solid tonight um as they both pushed to make the opening night roster and then dig into the team and look at who else performed well by looking at what the numbers say. So before we get to all that and a rant about Barkley Goodroill, do want to of course thank you guys. Uh let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app by visiting FanDuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. So, um, let us start with Ethan Cardwell, who has was excellent to Knight, right? Ethan Cardwell, if you don’t know, former fourth overall pick, was an overager uh in the 2021 draft, has spent the last two seasons uh, honing his craft with the San Jose Barracuda, where he’s been kind of that jack uh, Swiss Army knife, jack of all trades type of player. If you need him to score 20 goals, guess what? He scored 20 goals as a rookie with the Barracuda. Um, if you need him to be an ace penalty killer, if you need him to play in crunchtime situations, um, Ethan Cardwell does it all and he’s excellent at it and he showed it tonight. at trick. Yes, one was an empty netter, but the first one absolute bar down beautiful goal a minute and a half into the game to set the tone, right? And you knew with this roster that the Sharks put out, this was a very AHLheavy young player roster versus a very veteran Vegas roster. when we get to the numbers like this is Vegas dominated this game in a lot of ways but scrappy Ethan Cardwell Palenda we’ll get to Reenda here in a minute but um scrappy Ethan Cardwell goal a minute and a half in right he scores a second goal on a great play by Regenda gets him the puck and those two should have good chemistry right they played together last year on the Barracuda they played a lot together like those two guys should have good chemistry Um but like he makes a great play along the wall to spring uh the puck to Regenda who gets it over to Aasv. Um and then he ices this game with an empty netter. Ethan Cardwell deserves to be on this roster come opening night. If you are looking to revamp your bottom six with young players or just not even young, like just players who can do stuff other than just skate around and get pinned in their own zone, you have to say Ethan Cardwell should be on this roster. And the person like Kyle Grundstrom, buddy, you’re you got to be not sleeping well tonight. Uh, knowing you probably lost your job. But Barkley and Barkley Goodro, who on this very podcast, when the Sharks claimed Barkley Goodro, what did I tell you people? I said, “This is a terrible idea. Barkley Goodro uh is one of the worst NHL players in the league when it comes to analytics. Yes, the leadership, I get it. He’s a professional. He’s won a cup. He’s a champion. You know, he was on He was a great piece of the Tampa Bay Lightning third line when they won a Stanley Cup. Um huge part of Sharks history, right, with his game seven winner, overtime winner against uh Vegas, right? But in what world did you watch Ethan Cardwell tonight and what we have seen from the past year of Barkley Goodro and say you know what give me Barkley Goodro. There is no world where Barkley Goodjo is a better hockey player than Ethan Cardwell is right now. No world. I would rather go with Ethan Cardwell who Yeah, I think he can do all the same stuff that Barkley Gojo does. You saw it on the penalty kill tonight. He sprung and if you’ve watched Ethan Cardwell in the AHL, he is a penalty kill. Not only is he a penalty killing ace, but he also creates short-handed opportunities. Um he is so quick and so he gets the stick out there so well where he breaking up passes and creating offense on the penalty kill. If you’ve watched Cardwell at any point, like if you watch him for more than a game, you will see Ethan Cardwell spring a short-handed opportunity. Does he bury them every time? No. Fine. But the guy works hard. He is everything a coach wants. He He’s the new version of Barkley Goodro, right? I don’t know if Ryan Wars, right? Those four C’s that what? Compete, connect, or whatever it is, right? There is no world where you watch both those guys and be like, “Give me good. Give me like like Ethan Cardwell raises the floor of this fourth line and you can play third line. You can put Ethan Cardwell in any situ. You need him to play on the power play, cool. You can play on the power play. You need him to play on the penalty kill, ace penalty kill. need to play five on five minutes and actually do things at five on five. You saw it tonight in a overmatched game like this. Uh somebody did the math and the the age of this Sharks team was like under 24 tonight. They had nobody over 30 playing the game. Like Vinnie Deese and Ascarov. Uh shout out to I I forget the Twitter handle. I like retweeted it, but like um shout out to to Deise and to Ascar being the two old guys at at the ripe age of 29 in this game, right? Uh you had Dickinson, you had Misa, you had Will Smith, like you had a a very young group out there, right? And Ethan Cardwell was absolutely amazing. There’s no way you can go and be like, and the worst part is, you know what’s going to happen. You and I both know what’s going to happen is uh they’re going to say, “Ethan, we love what you’ve done. We want you to go iron out X, Y, and Z in the Barracuda, and we’ll see you up later this year as they give a job to Barkley Goodro.” You and I both know that’s gonna happen. So, um, Pavo Regenda, I think Regenda also again, big body dude. Um, I I like and you saw his impact with the Barracuda last year. You saw it again tonight, right? Where his ability to, um, you know, kind of control the puck and use his size to his advantage and he made smart plays tonight, right? I still, if I had to choose between the two, I think Cardwell is the guy. But you do wonder if when if and when Pavle Reenda goes on waiverss to try to get him to the Barracuda if a team might be interested in claiming Pavle Regenda because they think he can make an impact on their fourth line. And when was the last time the Sharks had a player go on waiverss and get claimed because it has been a while uh for for that. But um yeah, I I’m like I don’t know, man. I I there’s what world do do you watch what we’ve watched from from Barkley Goodro over the past year and say, “Yeah, you know, I think I’m I’m going to ride with that over Ethan Cardwell.” Like, and again, it’s the preseason, right? um you don’t want to get too high or too low on a player, but if you’ve watched Cardwell and his what he he does this stuff every game for the Barracuda like this was basically a Barracuda plus roster. He does this type of stuff every game for the Barracuda where he’s making the he’s making all the hustle plays. He’s making smart plays. Um and you can put him in any situation and Cardwell’s going to thrive. Like I would rather ride with that than go another season with Barkley Goodro moping around on the fourth line. So get me Cardwell on this team. Uh where’s my elephant? Um we’re going to talk about the rest. We’re going to talk about the kids of course with Dickinson and Misa who both performed I think pretty well tonight. nothing flashy, but again, I think continuing to lock up their places uh not only on the open roster, but I think long-term for this season. So, we’ll talk about the kids here in just one second. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, New Crossers can bet just $5, get $300 in bonus bets. If you win, that’s right, pick a bet, put down five bucks, and if it hits, you’ll unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Uh, I love Fendle because it gives so many ways to play. Um, you can do parlays. They’ll even suggest parlays for you. Or if you’re one of those people who has to have a million parlays, they got you covered there. They have player props. Uh, I I think I think Tua and the Dolphins this weekend. Uh, maybe Darren Waller. Give me a Darren Waller touchdown this weekend. Uh or even you can jump in the live lines during the games. Uh it makes watching football even more exciting when you got a little something riding on the action. So what are you waiting for? Give fanduel.com a try by visiting uh fanduel.com. Download the FanDuel app today and get started. All right, guys. Do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks uh your first listen. If you haven’t yet, perfect time to subscribe. Uh we got another preseason game tomorrow. Uh we’re going to be talking about uh final roster decisions here. Um coming up this week, uh next week we got uh spoiler, we got good friend Max Miller coming back on to do our annual kind of overunders podcast that we do every year. Uh so that’ll be fun coming up. And then of course uh next week season starts guys. Uh so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast. And of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So, uh, Dickinson, Misa, we’ll start with Dickinson. Um, I thought Dickinson tonight, you you saw the flashes defensively more than the offense. And again, the Sharks were heavily outmatched, which I thought this was actually kind of smart by Greer by uh, Warski to put these young guys in a situation like this and see how it how they handle it, right? um how like you’re overmatched and assuming the Sharks most nights are going to be overmatched. How do you handle this type of you know and again Vegas one of the best teams in the NHL uh as gross as it’s you know like is for me to say that it’s true right um and you you know this they had Marner they had Eel they had hurdle like they had basically everybody out there tonight that that they expect to be um uh you know like on the opening night roster like this this this was their team right and while the Sharks outplayed That’s very fair to say. These young kids handled it very well. I thought Dickinson again, you saw some really smart plays defensively. You know, active stick, being physical, just confidence with the puck to make the right play, make smart plays, get the puck out of the zone, kind of keep it moving there. Uh you physical standing up to himself. Uh you know, against uh I think it was Howen who came flying in there. uh like did not show fear in in those moments. Um what exactly what you want to see? Uh I like the more I’ve seen of Dickinson like I I I I think they’re going to figure out a way to just keep him here all year, right? And even if they have to kind of like be a little, you know, uh, restrictive with his minutes or whatever early on, I I think Dickinson is here to stay and they’ll they’ll go through the ups and downs, but what I’ve seen from him and, you know, he’s made like he’s tried to push for offense a little bit too much here, like occasionally here and there, and that’s going to be part of the Dickensson experience, right? because you don’t want to take away what makes him such a special player creating those offensive moments. But, you know, he’s going to learn his he’s going to learn how to pick his spots here. But, uh I I think he is NH already. He such a smooth skater. Um yeah, I I I I don’t it’s hard for me to imagine him going back to London and we know Mike loves him some Sam Dickinson. So, I think they figure like I think they figure out a way. They’re they’re going to keep him here. So, even if they have to carry eight defenseman or whatever, they will figure out a way right now. So, um as for Michael Misa, right, played on a very young line with Will Smith, uh and Quinton Musty. Um but Misa again, just that kind of under we we know the we’ve talked about the production, right? the production is not there. But again, if you’re not scoring, what else can he do for me? Misa has been making very good plays. You see the hockey IQ of him, you know, covering for uh, you know, when defenseman pinch. He’s been back. There was a play, great play on Hurdle defensively to get back on what would have been a breakaway by Hurdle. I know Hurdle and his knees doesn’t have the speed that he used to have. on that that Hurdle was ever the fastest two to begin with, but Misa gets back, makes a good play defensively um on Hurdle in a one-on-one situation there. Another play again where I think it was it might have been Dickinson or it might have been Lilen, I can’t remember. One of the defenseman kind of gets us uh caught, you know, pushing for offense as the Sharks were trying to um generate some offense when the few opportunities they had. Misa getting back um playing, you know, playing tough defensively, playing responsible defensively, which is what you want to see from your center. Um and again, I know the production’s not there. Like, I don’t care. The production is going to come. Like I that I’m that is the thing I’m least worried about with Michael Misa is if he can score. Uh and if like he’s doing all the other little things, right? You’re going to see the production here soon. Uh like that is I am not worried about Michael Misa when it comes to production. I thought he was absolutely outstanding tonight uh with those details. Right. And again, like you’re when we talk about the numbers here in a little bit, like that line, you know, like that line struggled to generate offense, but again, you’re playing against Vegas and uh a very good Vegas team and Vegas, like I said, they they do like controlled this game for a majority of the game. So, um I do like a couple guys want to shout out as well. Um Muk Mullan we talked about last game he might be the Shark’s best defenseman again tonight just smart little plays all the time uh just super confident right nothing seems to rattle Muk Mullan using like he’s using his size to his advantage how often you see like Muk Madan just coming in there making up great play at the last second um like yes and especially with what we saw from the vets the last game. Uh I thought the Sharks played much better defensively tonight. I mean, they were four to one. You know, it was a 4 to1 win. Yes. Um Nadelovic was absolutely outstanding tonight as well, but Moo Mullan uh right now might be the Sharks best defenseman and he was great again tonight. I’m curious to see if they play him tomorrow or give him the day off. Um but I would I would actually give Mukadan the day off tomorrow. let some of the vets see if they can kind of figure some things out here. But I think Muga Dolan has been outstanding and I think he’s going to be one of if not the best Sharks defenseman this season. So um and then Deise uh like De’s, you know, like he knows exactly what his role is, right? Just play competent defense and then stick up for the guys, right? And and Cam Lun gets hit with a border. I thought it was late, borderline late hit at the end of the second period. JRE makes a beline over there to Lison who was an absolute menace tonight and puts him in his place. And guess what? You didn’t really hear from Lison much the rest of the game, at least when it came to some of the physical play. Um, you know, if if Dares is your eighth defenseman and he has to come in and play every once in a while, it’s not the end of the world. Um, if you need to wave him and put him down the barracuda and then pull him up if you need a guy, it’s not the end of the world. I think like having a guy like Darren, it’s having him around I think will do good. I know last year at the end of the season like he kind of got thrown in there. He mentioned how it was such a tough year for him kind of dealing with two trades in the same season. Um, seems like he’s in a much better place than he was last year. So like I’m like nothing flashy from Teresa’s like we know his we know what he is and I think he knows what he is and he lives up to his role right uh protect the children and just you know make some sound plays here and there. So uh we’re going to talk about kind of everybody else who played tonight as we dig into the numbers of this game. Uh talk about how Vegas definitely dominated uh but the Sharks took advantage of their opportunities here. Uh we’ll get to the rest of the lines and stuff. So, we’ll we’ll we’ll talk about everybody tonight. So, uh so yeah, hang on here in just one second. [Music] All right, before we finish up, do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen. For your second listen, check out the 2025 NHL season preview on Locked On NHL. in eight episode series bringing the best local insight to make you the most informed NHL fan heading to the season. Uh so we have like each division. We have the teams who were like in the playoffs last year or like just missed the playoffs. Uh and then we have the uh hopefuls I think they called them nicely, but uh the basement teams and you know it was a really fun conversation. Um, you can check out the Pacific hopefuls here at Locked on Sharks as well, where it was me, the Canucks, the Kraken, and the Ducks all having a good time there as well. Uh, somebody said I have the best background of the group. So, uh, shout out to you. I think I do have a pretty good background. But anyway, uh, you can find out all the shows though at Locked on NHL on YouTube or you listen to podcast. So, um, Sharks again in this game, um, very much like Vegas controlled the pace of this game, but the Sharks took advantage of their opportunities in this game. Um, shot attempts at five on five is about 46 minutes of five on five time, 42 to 27 in favor of Vegas. Uh, 24-6 uh, actual shots in favor of Vegas. So, um, like Sharks didn’t get a lot of shot opportunities, but when they did, they got like that’s 16 shot attempts on 20 or 16 shots on goal and 27 shot attempt. Like again, quality over quantity, I think. Uh, scoring chances though, 18-6 in favor of Vegas, 8 to4 high danger chances in favor of Vegas. 1.83 83 to 0.92 expected goals for uh all in favor of Vegas. Again, AHL plus team verse basically Vegas’s Bull team tonight. So, um I I I think like that is not a a long-term winning recipe, but the Sharks were severely short-handed tonight. So, like not shorthand, but like playing the young kids today, you’re going to you’ll see a lot of uh waiverss and and transactions on Saturday to kind of get some of these guys down, I would assume. Um and then because the Barracuda have two preseason games this weekend, uh Saturday and Sunday, so I expect to maybe see some of these guys uh on Sunday’s game. Uh so like I would like I would assume um probably get sent back down. Bowers. Some of these guys who’ve already cleared waiverss. I would assume they probably get sent down and go meet up with the Barracuda. Uh so all right. Um as for the forward line, so uh the London Deandria Colin Graph line played the most at five on five at 1025. Um they had five shot attempts to seven. Actual shots is 1 to2. um 04 to.31 expected goals for um I thought Deandria continues to like the like you this is a man playing for his job and you can tell the last couple games were this is a man that is playing for his job. Um, he’s been very effective. I thought was all over the ice tonight again making positive plays. Again, look what happens when you put Tyandria with other players or or good players, right? Um, I thought Cam Lun like Cam L’s had a really solid camp, especially after coming back from his injury. I still think time in the the AHL is probably best for Lun uh because that way he can kind of continue to round out his game. And Graph I thought was solid against tonight. had an opportunity where I think if he could do it over it was like a little kind of mini twoon-one where he would probably want to shoot there instead of try to kind of make a pass to the trailer like just shoot the puck there and especially for a team that struggled you know that the Sharks only got 20 shots on goal tonight the entire game so um probably want to take take some more shots there. Danger was also great in the faceoff tonight uh for a team the Sharks who were 35% in the faceoff again uh short hand like the the short hand of the but was pretty good in the faceoff as well tonight. So um you’ll definitely take that uh for a guy who wants to be a center. I think like I know some people are soured on Dandria. I think if you get him away from Barkley Goodro I think Dandria can be an effective fourthline player for you. So, we’ll see. But, uh, like I said, I thought, you know, London graph I thought were pretty solid as well tonight. So, uh, Reanda Ochuk Cardwell 854 7 to9 shot attempts. Uh, 2:1 goals, 4.5 to.26 expected goals, uh, three to four scoring chances. Um, we talked a lot about Cardwell. We talked about it again. I thought a stop was was, you know, definitely the, you know, the quotequote passenger on that line. Not that he was a passenger, but like um the other two were definitely driving the bus, but I thought a stop truck was was more effective tonight than what we have seen. Uh still some time in the AHL for for a stop truck I think for him. Um Musty Misa Will Smith 836 uh 4 to 10 shot attempts. Um 2 to eight actual shots. Uh 03 to 0.55 expected goals, four 0 to five scoring chances. Again, uh this line struggled against the uh competition that they played against tonight. Um but that’s okay. All right. Um Will Smith’s had a really weird camp. I’m not worrying because again, I want to see Smith with with Cabbrini, right? Because those two together have chemistry. And um like we we’ve seen a big enough sample size last year from those two where I’m not worried about uh Will Smith yet because he doesn’t really have his running mates right now. So not going to panic on Will Smith uh because the training because we’ve seen enough flashes from him but we have seen him be kind of quiet for you know amounts of time. So, um, Musty, I think though, like as well as he’s played, uh, I think though we can kind of put the kibos on him maybe making the team out of camp. Still, again, playing the AHL is not like the end of the world for these guys. Like, Musty needs some time to develop there. That’s that’s perfectly fine. So, um, Alison AV, Shane Bowers, and Carl Grundstrom, uh, 613, uh, two to five shot attempts. Uh, 0 to3 actual shots, 009 to 06 expected goals, four one scoring chance, four on that. Uh, Ainia continues to be effective. He’s going to be a tough cut. Uh, I I think though he sneaks through. Um, Grundstrom, like I said, I think your days are done. Uh Bowers, you know, like he was fine tonight, but uh obvious like you you’ve seen some flashes from him. You’ve seen him get physical and mean and nasty. Uh he was uh he lost his helmet in the Dickinson scrum there um as well. So like I I do think like uh yeah, I do like NV, but uh I think he he’s going to play NHL games for the Sharks this year. Like I I have no doubt about that. Um, but I I think they will he will have to be a waiverss uh to get down to San Jose at at some point here. So, um, yeah, that’s that’s and then uh Alexander Nadulkovich um I’m I’m not like, you know, uh I’m just asking a question. Is he your starter on Thursday night against the Kings? Um he’s let up one goal in two games. um absolutely outstanding tonight. 29 saves on 30 shots, uh one goal against, 2.68 expected goals against, eight of eight on high danger saves, eight of eight on mid danger, and then 12 of 13 on low danger. And that was uh I still that felt like it was tipped by hurdle that goal. But anyway, um like like I know like everyone we’re very excited about as I you should be excited about Ascarov, but like the plan still like it’s it’s pretty clear like the Sharks are going to take the the Dustin Wolf approach, right? Where it’s going to be very 50/50 to start the season with Nelkovich and Ascarov and then the hope is Ascarov just kind of takes the job throughout the season like we saw with Dustin Wolf last year. So, you know, just don’t be surprised if Nadulkovic starts on Thursday. Like, I still think Asi starts, but just I wouldn’t be shocked if Nadulkovic starts on Thursday. Uh, so we’ll see. Maybe Asi has a great game tomorrow with the NHL team in front of him. Uh, but you you got to feel really good about Nadulkovich and and the Sharks goending situation going into the year. you got to feel way better about it than you have in years to be honest. So, uh yeah, I like between having like two guys or you feel confident the Sharks should be in the game with those guys out there like got to feel pretty good about it. So, anyway, that’s going to do it for me. We’ll be back tomorrow night to talk about the Sharks uh Mammoth game um as uh San Jose looks to end their preseason on a high note. We’re hopefully we see CBrini tomorrow. Um, so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcast. And of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on Tik Tok on Small Man Cowabunga dudes. Um, plus follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Till tomorrow. Bye friends. [Music]

Goodrow, Reeves and Grundstrom are all waste of a roster spots.
Not excited for Celebrini vs mammoth. They just love to try to injure him
What’s the endgame with Goodrow? He’s unmovable with his contract…even max retained. I just don’t understand how they print “Earn it” shirts and preach 4C’s…only to ignore all that stuff and stick with Goodrow.
Cardwell was brilliant but Pavel Regenda was right up there 4 pts assisting them all.
1:56 4th overall pick? 🤔
Agree with Cards. He did everything they asked him to do. I supported him since he is in the system. He did a lot of adding muscle. His hustle for the puck is great. And MaCarthy benched him a few times last year when I rember correctly.
Ned will be #1 over Asky. Hopefully Askerov blooms in the NHL but Ned is clearly better.
Regenda is the choice for the spot. Great for Cards on those goals but Regenda won board battles and made some great passes. We have shooters but we need more guys that can get the puck off the boards
My vote is for Regenda, Cardwell goals can't happen without the assists
Regenda-Gaudette-Cardwell make it happen GMMG!!!
