Yankees Get Stomped in Game 1 of the ALDS | 1294

Today is October 4th. The Yankees lose game one to the Blue Jays and are now down just like they were against the Red Sox in a playoff series. Sad. Welcome to Talking Yanks. My name is Jimmy. His name is Jake. It’s brought to you by SeatGeek, where you can use code Yanks 10 for 10% off. JM playoffs. Wow. JM playoffs for 10% off. BBD is here. The Yankees lose. It was final 10 to one. 10 to one. 10 to one. It was a game up until the seventh inning. Two to one going into the bottom of the seventh or bottom six. Was it bottom seventh? Bottom seven. Bottom seven. And then it all fell apart. We’re gonna discuss it. We’re going to break things down into learnings versus concerns because some things that went bad I’m not worried about in the future because I think it’s not going to present itself again. Other things I’m worried about in the future. Yes. Uh you know, some good, bad, some ugly, and we’ll we’ll try to chop it up that way as well. I think um a couple broad strokes before we get in. Uh this was Kevin Gossman, their their ace against our four starter Luis Heel. Luis Heel did not look very good at all. Uh new members of the bullpen stepped up. So we’ll talk about that with the bad members of the bullpen um getting worse. And yeah, if you weren’t watching or you were watching at home, you saw the Yankees approach on Kevin Gosman was try to get his fast ball so you didn’t have to deal with his splitter late in the counts. Uh, and that led to a couple extremely short. I think at one time there was four outs and five pitches. Yes. Yes. That was kind of the low moment in the Yankees game and then they held and the momentum shifted and they had one big opportunity. Um, and we’re going to talk about that. So I the other thing I’d like to get out of the way uh lineup decisions. There was a Ben Rice Paul Goldmid decision. I have that as a learning. If if Gossman gets another game in this series, Ben Rice cannot start. He looked so lost against him. Yeah. Everyone else was identifying fast ball and swinging at it and putting it in play and not getting results. Um McMahon had a good at bat early. Vlatty makes the double play. Jazz gets a hit. Then McMahon hit a nice shot. Vlatty made a great double play. Jazz had a hit later on. Was it Barger in right track? Barger made a great play. Great play. So, the Blue Jays played their best game, and that’s that’s not uh out of the norm. Like, they played good Blue Jays baseball. So, hats off to them. They played really well. It was our fourth starter, Luis Heel, versus uh Gossman. I still like where the Yankees are at moving forward. So, I’m not doom and gloom right now. Um I don’t think the Yankees could have won this game. I don’t think they can win bullpen games. So, I’m happy that the next three pitchers freed Rodon and Schlitler should give them more innings because I I think this game for me, Jake, I I told you I kept breaking down to one moment, right? There was a pitch decision. Well, as on our live stream, I love trying to get in the mind of the pitcher and catcher. Um, in the fourth inning, I think Heels’s last inning, he looked good at the start of the fourth inning. He got two quick outs. Uh he looked at the end of the third he looked good. Genuinely Hill or heel? Heel. Okay. Heel. Heel came out in the third. So the third inning. Yeah. Okay. So uh he the end of the second inning he started throwing slider. The last batter of the slider Ernie Clement. He got he struck him out. He threw three out of four pitches were slider versus him. Something like that. And then he came out and uh third inning he faced um Springer, Lucas, and then Vlad. Springer, Luks, and then Vlad. He got Springer out, he got Luke’s out. He looked much better. He was spotting his fast ball. He looked better. He has Vlatty um two strikes. 02. 02. And I was saying you you should throw fast ball inside now off of the outside slider because Vlatty is comfortable. He can extend his arms and hit that fast ball if you try to tunnel it there. They went with that outside fast. Yeah, I think that changed the whole course of the game, that one pitch decision. If Heel gets Flatty out there to end the third, I think he gets sent back out for the fourth because now he’s looked good, right? Um, and then you push all the bullpen down. Maybe it’s wrong because Weaver probably finds his way into the game anyway because they had to learn that lesson. But that was one spot where it was two nothing and now the lefty versus the righty. You don’t want to give up a two-run homer, make it a four nothing game in in the third inning. So, they went to the bullpen and and Tim Hill and Dval pitched really well. Dval pitched really well. Yeah. that I think the learning from this game is that Weaver’s out. I I didn’t have him. Part of the formula game three against the Red Sox. And he I love Weaver. I I’ve been as big a Weaver fan as you can get. I I didn’t think you could pitch him in that game against the Red Sox. Oh, here’s the pitch right here to Vlad. We’re showing it. It’s like a nice pitch. He executed that pitch. I think he executed what he wanted, but Vlatt’s so good that he just went and hit it and he’s fine. Um I I didn’t want Cruz or Weaver pitching in game three. I wanted Schlitler to Devin to Bednar. Luckily, we went Schlitler to Bednar. I as soon as they brought Weaver in, I was like, “Oh shit.” Yeah, this is this is not going to be good. Yeah, we’re still in the exploratory part of the postseason. Like Camila Deval, you wouldn’t have been excited today if he came into the game and he gives you two winnings. So, that’s one of the positive learnings. But yeah, this game was going to fall on Luke Weaver. It did. And he looked awful again. six batters. All six batters have gotten on. He can’t He can’t He has no precision right now. He can’t spot his fast ball, which means he can’t work off anything. And everything’s up. He’s missing up high with the fast ball. He’s missing up high with the change up. Sometimes they say that’s fatigue. He’s still like he came back from that injury so quick. It could be that. I have no idea. That is a long time ago, but it’s a consistent problem. I don’t think Weaver is going to be an issue moving forward. Yeah. Because I don’t think they’re gonna hand him the ball in a spot to lose a game. I think they just stopped that. I think the same for Cruz. I think Dval just jumped Weaver and Cruz. Yes. Easily. Um Yeah. And I I think that’s one of the positive spin zones out of this game. Luis Heel gave up two earned runs. Luke Weaver gave up three. Paul Blackburn gave up four. I don’t think you’ll you will not see any of those pitchers again in this series. L it would be dire straits or giant not dire straits. Weave out. I mean like extra innings that last forever or um up 10 down 10. Yeah, it’d be a rehab. It’d be a rehab outing for Weave. So yeah, and I you know, we’ve talked a lot about the Yankee bullpen that it’s thin down there that this was this was the Yankees last effort. We’ve got some rest. He didn’t pitch in that uh in the last two games against Boston. Yeah. So, we’ve had him pitched since Tuesday. So, this was his, hey, if we’re going to get through the postseason, it would be really nice to have Luke Weaver. They put him out there. He doesn’t have it. He’s out. Yeah. Um so, uh on the positive side, no, the Paul Blackburn stuff, none of that matters. If you were watching with the live stream, I was saying get it to double digits because that makes it feel more of a fake game. That’s right where it landed, 10 to one. Um, I think it’s Luke Weaver. And then this is the insane convo that we might have to tell our social team not to clip, but Aaron Judge is in a weird spot right now. Yeah. I mean, Aaron Judge is having a great postseason. The offense has been uh brutal altogether. Judge is the best offensive numbers on the team. Judge’s slash line is he’s a after today he has a 400 batting average. He has a 438 on base percentage. He has a 467 slugging. He has a 905 OPS. That’s his slash line right now in the postseason. So in in months from now or history or years from now if this is how it ends up, you’d look at it and you’d say, “Well, look like he performed that one.” Yeah. Um, but that strike out with the bases loaded and those and those first pitch fast balls he got Yeah. from Gossman, that’s not the judge we’ve seen, right? That’s not the judge we’ve seen. That that strikeout base loaded killed everything. I will say Bellinger and and um Stanton have to pick him up. They’re they’re really doing nothing. Yeah, I’m I’m gonna walk back how I thought I was feeling about Judge. If Belly Rice’s stats are pretty rough, Stanton, if those guys have done anything, Judge’s contributions and on base percentage, we’d be really happy. We’d feel a lot better. Yeah. So, I I will take it a step back. Judge has been good. The strike out with the bases loaded and the way it looked. Yeah. We just He hasn’t chased like that. He doesn’t do that often this year. There’s a handful of times he’s striking out. Oh, on a pitch, especially like a ball four. I wonder ball four, it felt like he was pressing a little bit. It’s Toronto. It’s loud. It’s the playoffs. All of that discussion around Judge that yeah, that I mean that at bat mattered more than his other five at bats he’s had like in the past couple games. So that’s why this conversation is happening. There should be a finger pointed at everyone else except Anthony Vulpi and Ryan McMahon. Yeah. I mean, even Austin Wells now has contributed. His slash line is not great. Wells is having the complete maybe opposite postseason of Judge. His slash line isn’t great. His overall numbers aren’t great, but game two against the Red Sox, he got a big uh hit or put the ball in play nicely. Game three, he he put the ball in play. That was the game. Game three, put the ball in play, got the error, but it was a good at bat leading up to that in a time you needed to battle. Today, he’s part of the rally against Gossman. Vulpi opens it up with a double. Wells hits a single. Like, they’re part of it, right? Any any inning that feels like we’re doing stuff, something’s happening, Wells has been a part of. So, he’s having a weird a weirder postseason. Um, Rice was was no match for Gossman Splitter. I’d never seen a worse matchup like competent hitter and just no match. Yeah. Yeah. No, and he even, you know, that final the bases loaded at bat. Uh I was thinking he was going to get one fast ball. Like I I didn’t think he could just split. Ben Rice has Ben Rice’s patience and pitch recognition is good enough that he wasn’t going to be able to just split him out. He got one fast ball and he popped it up. Um, and again, this Kevin Gossman is good. Like Kevin Gossman is a good pitcher that you have to give him some credit. But on the other side of that was the Yankees not coming through in the one inning they had traction. And hey, Yankees offense stuff is going to start getting really loud cuz they had one inning against the Red Sox that could have been zero runs. Yeah. Ball went off Raphael’s glove. The game-winning hit hit for Judge. I guess that’s another thing that’s in here. went off Duran’s glove. Wells’s moment goes off Lowe’s glove. Like the Yankees haven’t scored since Ben Rice’s homer, basically. And that was a tipped pitch. He knew a curveball was coming. So that is the fear. Wow. And that’s the conversation that has a chance to get really loud tomorrow if they don’t get some early runs. Well, I I don’t I haven’t looked into Savage, but it’s Savages in the box versus Y Savage on the mound. And I uh um I don’t know. They don’t farewell against rookie pitchers sometimes, especially if he’s like, is he a hard throwing rookie pitcher? Throws pretty hard. Highest release point. Um Oh, Jordan Montgomery, does he have a higher release point than Monty? Um are they going to battle for it if Monty comes back in his house? Yeah, I guess I don’t know. Monty didn’t pitch this year, so I don’t know. Um yeah, I think he’s uh I think he has a fast ball that pairs very well um with his kind of split change up. Uh it’s it’s listed as a split. So, how tall is you, Savage? It’s a uh listed 6’4. Well, Monty’s 6’6, so I bet when Monty comes back in the league, he’s going to take him. 63% arm angle. He’s pretty pretty straight over the top. Um, and the fast ball’s around 95. So, like this doesn’t have um I guess what am I looking for? I got Cam Schlitler or um I mean Louie Louie Varland who came out for Toronto today and that’s why Jun Carlo gets a little comma after his tough day today. The the most impressive pitching performance from any at bat today was Louis Varland against Jun Carlo with the bases loaded. Um knee buckles knuckle curve 90 fast ball fast ball. See you. Um, so yeah. Do we want to do what other negatives do we need to get out? Cuz I there’s a couple positives. Not a ton. There’s a couple positives. I feel like we got a lot of it. I mean, heel looked bad. Um, Trent left on left is becoming a If there is a late game at bat and there’s a decision to be made, I think I want the button to be pushed. Yes. Savage throws right. Throws right. Um, I’m fine with it. And hey, like let’s the positives. Did we have walks in this game? I mean, the belly walk. It was that one inning, right? Two walks total. Two walks in that one inning. Belly and Trent. So, let’s get the walks going. Uh, Y Savage and has been walking hitters and he’s a young rookie in his debut. So, like, let’s be let’s get the patience up a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, the positives are Tim Hill and Dval combined for 3.1 pitches innings of no hit ball. Um, Vulpi continues to have his one at bat was nice. He actually got such a pitch to hit and missed it. Uh, and then they pinch ran for Cabierro before that because I think I wonder if that was really nerdy analytics. Like I wonder if Boon answered. I don’t think he’d answer honestly. one way or the other. Like, okay, so if you didn’t watch the game, uh McMahon is on first base and Vulpi’s up and we’re like, should they pinch run for McMahon with Cabier is much faster. There’s only one out. Um, one run game. Yeah. One run, one tying run. What do they do? And you have the the ML the AL’s stolen base leader on your bench. They don’t do it. And then the count after three pitches, the count goes two to one. Yeah. So, it’s uh a hitter’s count. Vulpi’s got leverage. Uh I’m sure the numbers skew. he’s gonna get a pitch and he’s gonna hit it. And so it’s either very analytical that they’re like, “Hey, now let’s go.” Like if that at bat goes 02, they’re like, “Nah, let’s not kill it. Let’s not waste it here.” But because it went 2-1, they go, “Let’s do this.” I’m hoping it’s analytics mate meets meatthead. Or it’s Cabier was, you know, taking a [ __ ] and just was late to get out there. I I think it is analytics. I think it’s what you alluded to that the Did they answer it? I I saw one tweet saying Boon said he changed his mind, but that wasn’t a direct quote. I’m trying to find a direct quote. And I I think we called him out on something like that earlier and that that’s like his go-to answer. I think it’s analytically driven. I think it’s an analytically driven with a twist of meat of like, oo, not only do we have the advantage in the count, but let’s mess with the pitcher and like now he’s got to think about the base runner. He he wasn’t thinking about the base runner. That I think that’s what’s going on, but I don’t know. I don’t know either. I um Okay, I’m more positive. McMahon, Ryan McMahon, good at bats. Yep. A great defense still. Um you know, the last two last couple things we’ve seen McMahon do is dive into a dugout and he had really good at bats today. Got robbed by Vlatty. Um Ryan McMahon good. Um, our next three pitchers are Freed, Rodon Schlitler. Big game for Freed. Big game for Freed. And Jim Bedar kind of needed a day off. Yeah. Yeah. We didn’t we didn’t show our hand of top pitchers in a loss in a five game set. You got to win three now. And uh the way those the way the odds go there. Well, and I think the other thing obviously Doval and Tim Hill are positives out of today. Those are those are going to be buttons that get pushed at some point. But Jim, I think tomorrow is free Devin and Bedar and that’s it. Yeah. You Well, you hope you can do that because they haven’t got an extra rest yet. This is the this is the first time and there’s an off day the next day. So this is the first opportunity they’ve really had to be able to push Williams or Bedar. So those are the only three getting the pill tomorrow. Yeah. I mean Freed has to deliver, which you hope he does. And he should. And he will. Max Freed. Trey Yavage. Trey Yavage. Yeah. Yeah. You want to win obviously. It’s a five game set. Lots of teams have lost uh game one. and the Yankees did it in 2017, lost game one and game two and went on to move on. That is the bummer of not winning the division. Yeah. Is that you had to go play the wild card, you lost game one, you had to use all your three pitchers, you had to use your fourth starter in game one against the Blue Jays, right? This could have been on the road because you had a horrible horrible uh middle of the summer and lost to the Blue Jays. So, it it’s not like I’m excusing it because it’s actually just comes down to, hey, win the [ __ ] division. Right. Right. You were a game away at any point in the season. Beat your division opponents during the year. Like, emphasize that for being in the Bronx with Max Freed. Yeah. Instead, you were in Toronto with Luis Seal. Yeah. It’s a huge difference. Like, emphasize that next year. Come on. Um, I’m feeling a little I’m feeling okay about tomorrow. The winning formula has changed. Hopefully, what Dval did today can be replicated because what Weaver did will be replicated and what Cruz did will be replicated. I don’t trust those two. I can’t pitch either of those two. Weaver’s completely out. Cruz is a panic final out in a fourth or a fifth and that’s really desperate. He can’t see those guys again. They didn’t care at all, dude. Like, they didn’t care about his splitter at all. And he hasn’t he hasn’t looked He spiked all of them. He hasn’t looked like the good Fernando Cruz. He made a great athletic play on that bunt. Yeah, that was nice. Uh but yeah, he has I mean, go watch you’re a Yankees fan. Go watch Fernando Cruz May highlights. And that’s a different cat. It’s a different cat. So, uh I think the good news is it should be freed to Devin to David tomorrow. Um, and I mean, we just saw what Cam Schlitler did, but a reminder what Cam Schlitler did was so special on so many levels, but it was multiplied because he was a rookie. Yeah. That Jesus Savage, he has 14 major league innings this year. I mean, let’s see what the kids got. He started in in Lowey this season. OA high a double AAA. Good for him. So yeah, guess just turned 22. Like let’s get to him early. I’m interested to see the splitter cuz again, circle Ben Rice. That’s true. [ __ ] Uh yeah, and uh Blue Jay’s defense was good and they’re going to be good the rest of the way. And uh they fouled off pitches, but mo mostly like heel didn’t look great. They credit to the Blue Jays for doing damage when they did. All those runs off Blackburn I don’t care about at all. No one should. He was in there just to throw strikes. Are they going to We were joking and it’s a half joke that they were going to uh Blackburn finds himself on the IIL with fatigue and uh Yerby’s on the on the team tomorrow. It’s meant to be informative at this point that for everyone asking that that could be what happens. I don’t know. Um I mean, how many pitches did he throw? He’s not going to pitch again, right? He threw 36. Well, his arm’s tired. 36. It felt like he was out there for an hour. It was one inning, right? Two innings. 1.1. Yeah. Stunk. Um, well, he’s there to I don’t know why he’s on the roster, but that’s what’s going to happen. It’s funny. Okay, here’s uh Andy Martino update. Weaver has been trying to clean up some tipping, which got in his head. He’s going to get back to just doing his normal thing. I don’t know. That’s um Hey, that’s you don’t you know Weaver’s an honest guy, so if he’s giving honest press conferences like that, we uh Weave will see a game two vers Seattle. But if that’s what you need to tell yourself, that’s fine by me. Yeah. Interesting. Okay. All right. That’s a weird way to end it. All right. Well, anyway, see you tomorrow. will be live streaming pre-in tomorrow. Win tomorrow. Win tomorrow. Win tomorrow. You You win on the road, you go to the Bronx. You get two chances at home. Win tomorrow and we’re we’re good. Win tomorrow. Go Yanks. Tell them Grams. Go Yankees. Happy birthday, Mom. Sorry the Yankees lost. Sorry. Happy birthday. Go Yankees. Go Yankees.

  1. You hope that the Yanks flushed their bowls with this game and got it out of their system. Also, why not walk Guerrero each at-bat? You can tell he’s hyped to be playing against us….

  2. Judge is an embarrassment. He totally disappears in the post season. He blew an absolute golden opportunity to silence the haters, but couldn't do it yet again

  3. Fun fact..Yesavage lead all levels of minor league baseball in strikeouts per nine at 16.8..you think Gausman and Cruz have a good splitter? Wait till ya see a splitter from a 7 ft straight over the top release point

  4. Also Stanton needs to share that hgh with Simone else besides Judge. Can’t tell me judge ain’t on the juice with that handsome squidward cranium of his.

  5. Jays fan here … we win games by a huge margin one day … then next day we lose 3-1 . Happy for the win … but being realistic here … this series is far from over

  6. Watching this random fan with no baseball experience trying to tell major league pitchers and catchers what pitch they should have thrown is hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂

  7. Cashman's analytical team report says go to Weaver in the 7th without any context. Boone goes to Weaver in 7th. What we have seen with our eyes as well as how he has been the worst bullpen arm since August DOES NOT MATTER to this organization's philosophy. The analytics will keep going to him like they did Williams. Boone will keep applying it. Fundamentally, that is the problem. At some point, you cannot keep putting your team in game 1 playoff holes.

  8. Fried to Williams to Bednar seems highly optimistic. Once Fried gets to 100 again, even if he's dealing, he'll be pulled out of the game, and the way Blue Jays play and grind this season I don't think it's going to be after seven innings. That's all assuming he deals. These Jays even without Bichette are not Red Sox without Anthony, they are a much better offense. The optimism is nice though.

  9. It's fine. I assumed we were gonna lose Game 1 to Crochet and this game was no different. Their best starter vs our worst. We had a tight series coming off an emotional high on the road. If Toronto didn't win today the series woule have been over for them. We will be fine.

  10. I think this is just as much of an issue and liability coming from the offense as it is from anyone else on the team and I’m not sure why we are not talking about that.

  11. Blue Jays whole offensive game plan this season is to bounce starters early by driving up pitch counts and then feast on the non-elite bullpen arms in the 5th to 7th innings. Yankees should aim to get at least 6IP from starters like Fried and Rodon, and should be looking to stretch Williams and Bednar to 2IP if necessary.

  12. Jimmy essentially still guaranteeing that the Yankees are gonna win the series is insane. The team he gave up on last month is now apparently the best team in American League and almost unbeatable. 🤡

  13. Jays literally own the Yankees all season long. The only hope they have is to hit dingers at their short porch. All this btw without the jays best hitter in bichette

  14. The lesson you boys can take from this game that yes My jays won but its only one game . The difference is the jays work harder , always put body on the line to make catches and the yankees will never outwork this team . We do beat lefties so dont just think you got a win coming tomorrow cause your facing THE SAVAGE!!!!!!!!!! buck was right you guys just arent that good and lets just say this SANTANDER is so close to going off
