Why Phil Simms would be ‘worried’ about Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

HIM, BUT HE YELLED AT ME FIRST. YOU MENTIONED WHENCE, UH, BEFORE WE LET YOU GO HERE. I’M CURIOUS ABOUT HOW THIS IS GOING TO PLAY OUT IN MINNESOTA. KEVIN OCONOR, THE COACH OF THE TEAM SAID SOME THINGS ON MONDAY, THAT THAT, YOU KNOW, HE DIDN’T QUITE INVOKE THE 100% RULE AND THAT’S WHAT IT USED TO BE. WHEN’S THE INJURY QUARTERBACK GOING TO WHEN HE WHEN HE’S GOING TO BE 100%. WHEN I DECIDE, HE’S 100%, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE WHEN THE BACKUP ISN’T PLAYING AS WELL AS THE BACKUP’S BEEN PLAYING BUT YOU KNOW JJ MCCARTHY’S HAD A ROUGH, GO OF IT SO FAR, HE’S GOT THE ANKLE INJURY AND I KNOW CONNELL POINTED OUT, YOU NEED TO BE THERE FOR THE WHOLE WEEK OF PRACTICE. HE MISSED A DAY OF PRACTICE, HIS CHILD WAS BORN AND THAT’S PERFECTLY UNDERSTANDABLE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, OKAY, CONELL SAID, HEY, READY MISSED DAY OF WORK BECAUSE KEVIN OCONOR, THE COACH OF CONELL SAID, HEY, THAT’S A PRACTICE THE WHOLE WEEK AND BE READY TO GO AND THAT’LL HAPPEN WHEN IT HAPPENS. BUT IT’S EASY TO DO THAT. WHEN CARSON WENTZ IS PLAYING LIKE THE BETTER VERSION OF CARSON WENTZ, NOT THE GUY WHO’S THROWING LEFT-HANDED INTERCEPTIONS FROM HIS OWN END ZONE. SO THAT’S THAT SEEMS LIKE IT COULD BE A TRICKY THING TO NAVIGATE, BUT AS LONG AS THE GUY WHO’S IN, THERE IS PLAYING WELL, MAYBE IT’S NOT THAT TRICKY. I DON’T THINK IT IS AND I’LL SAY IT THIS WAY CARSON WENTZ LOOKED LIKE HE WAS ACTUALLY ENJOYING THE GAME MORE THAN I’VE SEEN HIM ENJOY IT. THAT WAS SOMETHING JUST HIS BODY LANGUAGE. I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY GOOD DURING THE GAME AND AND YOU KNOW, I DON’T LIKE TO START CONTROVERSIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT I WOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT JJ MCCARTHY AND IT I I DIDN’T THEY. YEAH, HE HAD THE GREAT, YOU KNOW, QUARTER OF THE FOURTH QUARTER AGAINST THE BEARS. OKAY. BUT WHAT REALLY MAKES ME THINK IS JUST THE THROWING PART OF IT, YOU KNOW, I I BALL. WELL, HE IT’S IT’S A LOT OF WORK AND IT SEEMS LIKE UNLESS HE GETS TO THROW IT AS HARD AS HE CAN THROW IT. THAT’S THE ONLY TIME HE SOMEWHAT PUTS IT ON, TARGET ON TIME, AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT. I THINK THEY GOT A LOT OF WORK TO DO IF THEY WANT TO TURN HIM INTO WHAT THEY CALL A FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK AND HE’S GOING TO NEED A LOT OF WORK. A LOT OF PLAYING TIME PRACTICE TIME. LIKE YOU SAID, AND IT WOULDN’T SHOCK ME IF CARSON WENTZ, THEY KEEP HIM IN THERE UNTIL IT’S UNTIL IT TURNS AND WHERE THEY CAN SEE BRINGING JJ MCCARTHY BACK IN, WOULD BE A LIP TO THE TEAM. SO THAT’S UM, THAT’S WHAT I’VE NOTICED AND IT I SAID, I TALK ABOUT IT, I’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT BOTHERED ME

Mike Florio and Phil Simms map out when the Vikings could pivot back to J.J. McCarthy, given Carson Wentz had such a strong showing in Week 3. #NBCSports #NFL #ProFootballTalk

  1. The problem is the Vikings aren't in a rebuilding phase – they put all the pieces in place save for the QB and expect a 2nd year Rookie to take them to the Promised Land. That's a lot to put on young shoulders.

  2. Vikings fan since I was a pup in the 1960s. Sadly, McCarthy is not going to ever be a "franchise quarterback." Wasted draft pick. Christian Ponder 2.0

  3. I'm so happy the Vikings signed Wentz. Letting Darnold go to make the fan base happy was foolhardy. They let the QB with the most regular, single season wins in franchise history walk for an injured, unproven player to pretty much satisfy the fans in my opinion. At least Wentz is purple blooded

  4. Draft picks are lottery tickets. Don’t marry your lottery tickets. I’m not giving up on McCarthy but he looks raw and needs another year to develop. He’s under contract for 3.5 years to find out if he has it or not.

  5. All of you guys saying he isn't ready apparently didn't see mahomes take the cheifs to the conference championship his 1st year starting, JJ needs more reps to get comfortable

  6. This is the problem with current NFL Quarterback development. We're living in such a dumbass HOT TAKE world now that people are now attempting to assess Quarterback legacies instantly, and it's honestly become completely ridiculous.

Anybody watching the last two games can see that Wentz played a solid game against Cincy, and McCarthy played a poor game against Atlanta. However, anybody actually paying attention to those games should also be able to easily see that the success of the running game and the work of the guys up front put Wentz in a much better position to succeed in week 3 than they did for JJ in week 2. I think that's part of the story if you're actually attempting to do serious analysis here.

  7. These takes don’t take into account that the left side of the offensive line was letting people through unblocked. Wentz had Darrisaw back and that makes a massive difference

  8. JJ will be fine Mr Phil. Our line had half of the starters out in both games and it was a HUGE difference getting Darrisaw back at LT against the Bengals. R E L A X folks

  9. What simms is saying that people don’t get is he’s missing wide open throws. You can put a Steele wall in front of JJ but if he can’t make the throws there’s a problem.

  10. The biggest concern should be McCarthy's durability.

Played 1 quarter preseason last year torn meniscus.

Played 8 quarters this season- high ankle sprain.

I said it last year – re-sign Darnold for 3 years guarantee 2 of them.

The NFL handed Darnold to the Vikings on a platter with a salary cap jump of $23.8 million.

They could have signed Darnold to exactly what he signed in Seattle for and it would have been a net hit cap of $10 million a year leaving them with $55 million this last off-season.

A good GM is smart enough to be flexible in his plans when good fortune hits you in the face.

    McCarthy is 22.

So what's the big problem if he spends his rookie deal learning?

People like to point to Brady.

Well, if Bledsoe hadn't gotten hurt Brady wouldn't have seen the field.

The more accurate comparison of a pivot in strategy is when the Seahawks started Wilson as a rookie over their big free offseason agent signing in Matt Flynn.

Wilson was better. Carroll started the better player regardless of how much they were paying Flynn.

In this case it would be starting Darnold no matter how high you picked McCarthy.
