Why it’s in Tyreek Hill’s best interest to be cut by Miami Dolphins | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
WE SAW THAT PLAY OUT MONDAY NIGHT. I ALREADY MENTIONED TYREEK HILL. HE HAD SURGERY YESTERDAY. HE’S NOT EXPECTED TO NEED ADDITIONAL SURGERY FOR HIS KNEE. HE HAS AN ACL TEAR ALONG WITH OTHER DAMAGE. HIS AGENT. DREW ROSENHAUS WHO DOES HAVE A REPUTATION AT TIMES FOR BEING EXCESSIVELY. OPTIMISTIC TOLD ADAM SHATER YESTERDAY THAT THE GOAL IS TO PLAY IN 2026 AND HOPEFULLY THAT’LL HAPPEN. MY FIRST THOUGHT MOMENT, ON MONDAY NIGHT WAS, HE’S DONE NOT DONE FOR THE YEAR, HE’S DONE DONE, THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT. IF HE CAN COME BACK BY 2026 WOULD BE. FOR MODERN SCIENCE. AND FOR THE RELENTLESSNESS THAT IS REQUIRED TO PROPERLY. REHABILITATE 1 OF THESE INJURIES BECAUSE WE DON’T SEE IT. THE WORK THAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES. THIS IS 1 OF THE REASONS THAT I WILL. THE MEN WHO PLAY PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL. AND BY THE WAY BIG SHOW DEDICATED TO THE MEN WHO HAVE PLAYED AND ARE PLAYING THE GREATEST SPORT ON THE PLANET, PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL? BECAUSE YOU SPEND HOURS YOU SPEND DAYS YOU SPEND WEEKS, YOU SPEND MONTHS GETTING YOUR BODY IN POSITION WHERE IT CAN GO OUT. THERE THE FREY KNOWING THAT, LIKELIHOOD. SOMETHING’S GOING TO HAPPEN, IT ALL OVER AGAIN. AND THEN YOU QUIETLY AWAY FROM THE CROWD AWAY FROM THE SPOTLIGHT AWAY FROM THE CAMERAS AWAY FROM ANYTHING. ANONYMITY. YOU HAVE TO WORK AND WORK AND WORK AND SWEAT AND HURT AND STRIVE TO REHABILITATE YOUR INJURY FOR WHAT THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO BACK OUT THERE. AND POSSIBLY DO IT AGAIN. IS AND BASED UPON THE WORK ETHIC WE’VE SEEN FROM HIM SINCE HE ENTERED THE LEAGUE. HIS ABILITY, DOUBT. WILLINGNESS AND ULTIMATELY HIS EFFECTIVENESS WHEN IT COMES GO. AN INTERESTING WRINKLE, I WROTE ABOUT THIS LAST NIGHT FINANCIALLY. NEXT YEAR’S THE LAST YEAR OF DOLPHINS. SEE, I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO BE TRADED BEFORE THE DEADLINE AND IF HEALTHY. BEEN. AND NEXT YEAR, ASSUME THE ALTERNATE UNIVERSE WHERE HE’S STILL WE GET THROUGH THE 2025 SEASON. HERE COMES 26, 36 MILLION IN TOTAL COMPENSATION FOR TYREEK HILL. THEY WILL CUT HIM. THAT WAS COMING, THEY WEREN’T GOING TO PAY HIM 36 MILLION FOR THE LAST YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT AT AGE. 32 IT WASN’T GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT THE REALITY. DO? WELL. NOW. THE THIRD MARCH. 11 MILLION OF SALARY BECOMES FULLY GUARANTEED, 5 MILLION ROSTER. BONUS BECOMES PAYABLE, THAT’S 16 MILLION. IF HE’S ON THE 1 6. BUT THEY HAVE AN OUT, THEY CAN CUT HIM BEFORE THEN AND THEY WON’T OWE HIM ANYTHING. POTENTIAL COMPENSATION HAVE THE CBA IF HE CAN’T PLAY NEXT YEAR, BUT IF THE GOAL IS TO PLAY NEXT YEAR, HE’LL BECOME A FREE AGENT. AND IF HE’S HEALTHY, SOMEONE WILL TAKE A CHANCE ON HIM BUT THAT THE DOLPHINS WILL SURELY LOOK TO AVOID MILLION. SEE A PLAYER WITH THIS KIND OF INJURY. TYPICALLY YOU GET A 1-YEAR DEAL. A 1 YEAR, PROVED IT DEAL TO PROVE YOUR HEALTHY. TO PROVE YOUR BACK OR SOMETIMES, WHAT IT’LL BE IS A MULTI-YEAR DEAL WITH A TEAM OPTION. FOR THE SECOND YEAR, I REMEMBER WHEN DREW BREES SIGNED WITH THE SAINTS, IT WAS A 6 YEAR, 60 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL, WHICH WAS A MASSIVE CONTRACT AT THE TIME 2006. BUT IT WAS 1 YEAR. AND AFTER THAT, 1 YEAR, THE SAINTS, HELD ALL THE CARDS FOR CONTINUING THE DEAL. AND IF IT DIDN’T WORK OUT, THEY WOULD HAVE MOVED ON FROM DREW BREES PERIOD. OBVIOUSLY IT WORKED OUT? THAT’S THE KIND OF CONTRACT TYREEK HILL WILL GET FROM THEY CUT UNLESS THE 2 SIDES, HAVE SOME BURSTS OF SENTIMENTALITY AND THE AFTERMATH OF THE INJURY CAUSES THEM TO APPRECIATE EACH OTHER AND TYREEK HILL. REALIZES, HE DOESN’T WANT TO PLAY FOR ANYONE, BUT THE DOLPHINS AND THE DOLPHINS REALIZE THEY WANT TO BE THE TEAM FOR WHICH HE HAS HIS REDEMPTION. FROM THAT AWFUL INJURY THAT HAPPENED ON WHAT LOOKED TO BE A PRETTY AWFUL PLAYING SURFACE IN MIAMI BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH GRASS IS BETTER THAN TURF. BAD GRASS, STILL SUCKS. UNLESS THEY WORK OUT SOME SORT OF OTHER DEAL, THAT IS A WIN-WIN. HE’LL BE CUT. AND WE’LL SEE WHERE HE LANDS IN 2026, THE OTHER QUIRK HERE. SOMEONE POINTED THIS OUT TO ME LAST NIGHT AND I CONFIRMED THAT IT’S ACCURATE. HILL HAS 1.8 MILLION IN PER GAME, ROSTER BONUSES FOR THIS YEAR. BASICALLY, YOU DIVIDE THAT BY 17. YOU GET A CHECK FOR EVERY GAME THAT YOU’RE ON THE ACTIVE ROSTER IN THE AMOUNT OF 1.8 MILLION DIVIDED BY DOLLARS, SUIT UP, AND ARE AT LEAST ON THE SIDE LINE. AND IF YOU’RE A PLAYER LIKE TYREEK HILL IN THE GAME, HIS PER GAME ROSTER, BONUS IS FULLY GUARANTEED AND WE SEE THAT MORE AND MORE. NOW, IT ALLOWS YOU TO PUMP UP THE AMOUNT OF FULL GUARANTEES THAT GET BROADCAST TO THE WORLD. SO THE DEAL LOOKS BETTER THAN IT IS IT. AND EVEN THOUGH IT’S FULLY GUARANTEED, IF YOU DON’T EARN IT BECAUSE YOU’RE INJURED, THE ONLY WAY YOU GET IT IS, IF YOU GET CUT. SO IN A WEIRD SORT OF WAY THE REMAINING 1.376 MILLION, I ALREADY DID THE MATH, I’M NOT I’M NOT A SAVANT IN THAT REGARD OR ANY. HE GETS THE REMAINING 1.376 MILLION, IF THEY CUT HIM TODAY. THAT’S THE ONLY WAY TO GET IT. IF THEY KEEP HIM ON THE ROSTER, HE DOESN’T GET IT. NOTHING FOR THE BALANCE OF THE YEAR. HE GETS CUT BEFORE MARCH 3RD. IT’S 16.376 MILLION IN FINANCIAL CONSEQUENCES. FOR TYREEK HILL BECAUSE OF THIS INJURY, BECAUSE OF THE STRUCTURED, THE GUARANTEES EVAPORATE AFTER THIS YEAR AND THE GUARANTEED PER GAME ROSTER BONUS REQUIRES HIM TO ACTUALLY BE ON THE GAME DAY ROSTER. IF THEY CHOOSE, THEY COULD GIVE HIM THE 1.376 MILLION AND MAYBE, THAT WOULD BE A NICE GESTURE. CLASSY MOVE. MAYBE THEY SHOULD. IT’S A WEIRD DONUT HOLE WHERE IT’S IN HIS INTEREST FINANCIALLY TO BE CUT. AND THE DOLPHINS WOULD STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR HIS REHAB. IT JUST FACILITY. GET CUT. AND HOPEFULLY, THAT WILL BE THE IMPETUS FOR SOMETHING, WHERE THEY’LL THE CHECK I MEAN COME ON. STEVE ROSS WE KNOW YOU GOT IT, WE KNOW YOU’RE GOOD FOR IT, HE WAS GOING TO MAKE IT ANYWAY AND HE SUFFERED A GRUESOME INJURY ON A FIELD THAT YOU PUT YOUR PLAYERS ON. THAT IS SUBSTANDARD. HOW DO WE KNOW WELL? HIS FOOT GOT STUCK IN AND IT CAUSED HIS KNEE TO DISLOCATE WHEN THE FORCE IS OTHERWISE BEING APPLIED TO HIS MUSCLES AND HIS BONES AND HIS LIGAMENTS AND TENDONS, CAUSED HIS KNEE TO RIP APART. AND IF WE COULDN’T TELL BY THAT, LOOK AT THE BIG SWATH OF SOD. DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD. IT LOOKED ROUGH. ISN’T IT? FUNNY HOW I’M GONNA GET MYSELF IN TROUBLE? BUT HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU WATCH GAME BROADCAST AND THE FIELD LOOKS LIKE CRAP POINT OUT. NOW. WE ALL SEE? OR NOT THE CREW ON MONDAY NIGHT AT ANY POINT MAY HAVE MENTIONED THAT THE FIELD LOOKED LIKE CRAP BECAUSE 2 GAMES ON IT ONCE. THANK YOU VERY LITTLE. I SHOULD THINK THAT. WHAT IT IS. BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN CRAPPY GRASS. THEY’RE ALREADY 4 UNIVERSITY, MIAMI GAMES. THIS WAS GAME NUMBER. YEAR. IN A MONTH. THAT THEY YOU SAW AT THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD. WELL, MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST TORE THE WHOLE THING UP. MAYBE THEY SHOULD JUST DO BETTER FIELD. AND I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT, BUT BUT THEY HAVE A PRETTY PRISTINE GRASS FIELDING GREEN BAG ALL YEAR LONG. THEY FIGURED IT OUT THERE AND THEY’LL FIGURE IT OUT FOR FIFA. THAT’S WHAT MATTHEW STAFFORD SAID, RECENTLY. MATTHEW ANYTHING HE’S PLAYED ON ARTIFICIAL TURF HIS ENTIRE CAREER ON THE. LET’S GO PODCAST THAT HE’S INVOLVED WITH THIS YEAR AND I WAS SURPRISED HE DID IT BECAUSE LIKE MATTHEW STAFFORD KNOWS, IT SAYS HE HE SAID SOMETHING. JUST BECAUSE OF INJURY BECAUSE THE END OF US SAY, WELL, THE INJURY RATES ARE INCONCLUSIVE AS TO THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASK ANYBODY THAT’S PLAYED ON GRASS, AND ASK ANYBODY THAT’S PLAYED ON TURF. IT’S A DIFFERENT FEELING WHEN YOU ROLL OUT OF BED. THE DAY AFTER YOU PLAY ON TURF AND THAT’S ALL YOU NEED. SO GARY’S ASKING ABOUT INSURANCE, IT GETS COMPLICATED, IT DEPENDS UPON THE CONTRACT. THERE ARE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT GO INTO IT, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS PAY. 1 OF THE REASONS YOU ACCUMULATE THAT MUCH WEALTH IS AT SOME LEVEL, YOU’RE A LITTLE BIT CHEAP. YOU’RE NOT GOING TO GIVE AWAY 1.376 MILLION WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO. AND STEPHEN ROSS, DOESN’T HAVE TO WE’LL SEE IF THEY GIVE TYREEK HILL THE MONEY BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THAT 1.376 MILLION MEANS A LOT MORE TO HIM.
Mike Florio sheds light on the lengthy and difficult process it’ll take Tyreek Hill to rehab his dislocated knee and unpacks what the situation is, given next year is his last contract year in Miami. #NBCSports #NFL #ProFootballTalk #MiamiDolphins #TyreekHill

Miami had no intention of keeping Hill past this year
This summer in the Diamond Track League ran and posted an official 10.11- 100 neters. His all time best is 10.08 . This major injury is another factor to condider.
If anybody could come back, it would be Tyreek… According to local beat writers, Tyreek has ALWAYS been an extremely hard worker… and let's face it, he was semi-superhuman to start with. I wish him the best… Love him or hate him, he makes the league more interesting.
Miami & tyreek were gonna part ways after this season anyways, he should've tried to get traded to KC weeks ago before the season started
Alan Poupart says it has rained everyday hard (for a short time each day) for 30 days… I lived in south Florida for 25 years and can attest to that rain pattern this time of year.. Sure, they can cover it, but that much consistent rain, the ground IS going to get saturated. The guys on Dolphins collective said they didn't think the turf caused the issue. Just the awkward landing on one leg while the defender had the other.
Can you cut a player on IR?
The field was not the reason why Tyreek blew his knee up. That's ridiculous.
Was it that bad I haven't seen it .
Love how u keep it Real about the football field was crap I Dnt understand y would u let nfl player and collage players paying on the same field smh
He is done
I have had both knees replaced… no way he plays football again! It’s just not possible after an injury like he had…
tyreeks contract is likely insured on the dolphins side…
He will not be ready to play until the 2027 season. He tore everything and injured the joint it’s a 15 month recovery and he’s 31..
I dont feel bad for people that make millions of dolars at year if they get injured, hey you make to much money so
Dude I love these episodes with just Mike. I wish NBC would stop ruining this show. No longer on cable TV and all these NBC co-hosts on the show.
Very interesting segment, thank you PFT.
Hey Mike- Ross owns the sod company that supplies the sod for the stadium.
As always, the contract seems to be very one-sided.. I have to think his agent would’ve thought about what an injury would do to his finances within his contract????
Greenbay has 1 team play on their field a week
To early ? No ? 😂
Foot got stuck in the sod, Tony? Are you kidding? They were slipping around all night on that wet, soft grass. Tyreek was also tackled well out of bounds.
I think he regret leaving kc. Hands down.
Well said, I must say. This is the stark truth of it all
Poor and rich people both don't want to pay money that they don't have to pay. Also, rich people live in this guy's head rent free, so they aren't paying there as well.
If the $1.376 million meant more to Tyreek, he should've never signed the contract that included that roster availability clause. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Once WR's hit 30, availability always becomes a recurring issue.
They mentioned it several times
Why give TH anymore money, he's already been paid over $100 million and no playoff wins.
There’s no way and I mean NO WAY he can ever comeback as a wide receiver with any explosiveness. Zero chance. He was a limited edition human being with super talent and a scary speed. I hope he retires for his own longevity in life. Thanks for the time and effort buddy sorry to see you go.
He got hurt on the sideline. Very little play there, so the condition of the field likely had no bearing. Come on, you're better than this to be blaming field conditions.
Training for maybe 15 minutes of playtime???
A surgeon said the injury is likely career ending given this style of play, age, and rehab time. He's a small guy who depends on his speed and ability to cut. He will be robbed of a lot of that when he is ready to play again and he will be around 34. They said he knee will be a lot more "loose" after he heals.
He was hurt because the tackler held on and twisted, had nothing to do with the field….
Can’t cut him now as a post June cut. They need to spread his cap hit out over two years to make releasing him favorable to the teams ability to field a team next year.
Now if they cut Hill without a June 1st destination than for sure Tua will be on the roster next year as you can’t take that kind of a hit times two.
I think it’ll all depend on who the GM and coach is next year. Are they going to completely gut the roster, take all cap hits in one year (similar to what the Chargers tried to do) and get out of this rebuild in one year or are is the new leadership going to approach it more as a multi year rebuild.
What's this? Another team that is going to drop their 30+ star WR after a knee injury in October? Sounds familiar. Now picture me this: Tyreek Hill and Stefon Diggs on the same team with a top-tier Quarterback. You know you want to see it.
Lol, being cut and losing 30mil isn't in his best interest
