I did NOT expect to hear this…

I did not expect this as we learned a lot about the Spurs future this season with Carter Bryant at media day as he was asked about one particular aspect of this upcoming season and his playing time and what he said. Well, I’ll just say I wasn’t totally expecting this, especially not from a young guy, but we got to dive into everything he said and how Mitch Johnson likely views this situation. But not just that, we have some comments from Dylan Harper and Harrison Burns about the team culture that just has us excited and a very interesting update from De’aran Fox himself. A bunch of stuff coming up on this episode of Spurs Digest. But hey, before we get into it, guys, we are less than 200 subscribers away from 10,000. The season’s right around the corner. Media Day is here. And if you’re enjoying the daily Spurs content, hit that free subscribe button down below so you can stay up to date. Let’s start with De’arren Fox. And this comes from Matt Guzman. And this was interesting. I mean, you know, if you watch media day, you probably heard some of this stuff. And you know, there was a lot of stuff about De’arren Fox and I show Speed. Fox saying he was going to be faster. And honestly, I believe him. Dear Fox doubled down, said he ran 15.53 miles per hour yesterday. Mind you, this dude has a hamstring issue that causes him to be out for a month. So, unless he hurt himself running, I don’t really know. Did he hurt himself running or was he running on a hurt hamstring? I don’t know. We’ll see. 15.53 miles per hour yesterday, faster than most guys here and is chasing the NBA record of 18 miles per hour. His max last year was 17.8. He claims I’m already running 15. When I say I think I’m ready, I think I’m ready. And I just thought this was a little interesting thing to start with because De’aran Fox again like the biggest thing with him, the biggest advantage he gives is his speed, right? That is Swipe of the Fox. That is what De’Arren Fox is. And that speed can separate you and completely change how the offense looks in a game, right? These fast breaks turning turnovers into guaranteed buckets at the other end if he’s the one jumping the passing lane. And that quick burst acceleration into a slash down the lane again will cause defenders to not have as much time to react. or if they do react, try to preemptively react, it opens up other lanes. But yeah, I mean, this is like one of those things that kind of just maybe slid by the wayside, right? Like Darren Fox talking about his running. Yes, you know, the eyes show speed stuff was pretty funny, but like still like this is something I do want to focus on. Like it there legit is a possibility that De’arren Fox sets the NBA record for speed and that’s something he’s chasing. And I just think that’s really interesting because again like it could just be something small he’s working on, but it could also like kind of change how the Spurs look. Again, the athleticism is a big advantage of this lineup, right? De’Arren Fox freak athlete. Dylan Harper pretty athletic. Stefon Castle in the dunk contest. WBY is one of the freakiest athletes I think we’ve ever seen. Even Soan’s quite athletic. Carter Bryant who we’re going to get into a little bit later. There’s so much athleticism in this lineup. And that again just like it causes other teams to play you differently. Knowing you have higher stamina, know you having you have higher verticals, faster speed bursts, it makes your offense a little more unpredictable, even the defense as well. So, I wanted to highlight that cuz I thought it was really cool. And before we get to the other stuff with Carter Bryant because I am very excited to talk about that, I want to dive into something else first. And this to me in the grand scheme of things is again just what makes the Spurs absolutely great and what sets us apart from other organizations. And I think it’s very important we talk about this, even if it’s nothing like too too crazy or brand new, should I say. But Dylan Harper and Harrison Burns had some stuff to say about the culture. And Harper said, “Talking to a legend like Pop is obviously surreal. I went from being in college to being in an organization so highly touted. So just talking to him and picking his brain about little stuff has definitely been a blessing.” And this is something that has been reiterated since the start of Dylan Harper Spurs tenure. From the moment we kind of knew we were going to draft him, I imagine. But the moment we did draft him and Carter Bryant, they have been talking so much about this and Harper working with Manu Gernobi, this guy right here. T-shirt link in the description, by the way. 10% off this and all this stuff. Don’t forget about that. But Dylan Harper has that perfect attitude to be a Spur. Also, I want to note that Cooper Flag looked a little sad at media day at the Mavericks media day. I don’t want I don’t want to dive too much into that, but I think everyone wants to be a Spur, and it’s for reasons exactly like this. I don’t mean to, you know, make fun or anything, but it’s it’s it’s for reasons like this because to be able to be around this organization, the greatness that’s there. Again, Manu working with Harper, Coach Pop being there, Timmy we know is always around and Tony Parker who knows could be a future NBA level coach in some capacity. Maybe he comes back, but again, it wasn’t just Harper, it was Harrison Barnes, too. I mean, this guy absolutely amazing veteran. Again, our best shooter last year. It was unbelievable to see the collection and not only player staff people in the or former players consistently being around showing up every day whether it was for coach Pop, whether it was for us. It was huge to see that when no one had to. And again, that just speaks to the Spurs culture and it’s clearly rubbing off on these guys. It’s something that causes people to come back and want to be a part of this organization after their career is done, right? And it’s causes people to want to be part of this organization in the first place. And it’s why Wemby was so excited to be drafted here. It’s why Harper and Bryant are so excited to be here and it’s why I believe in the future we’ll get other guys like De’aran Fox who will want to go to the Spurs. Even Durant remember the Spurs are one of his preferred destinations. So to me that is incredibly important, right? But another very important thing with the Spurs is how they handle their players. Not only like having this greatness around, but how you handle the players individually. And when it comes to Carter Bryant, that’s been a very interesting question this year and something we’re about to answer because what he said is very interesting. And look, he was showing out in these incredible runs over the summer. We saw him last year, uh, you know, in the NCAA with Arizona. Nice little pullup jumper there. And Mitch Johnson, we know he has a decision to make regarding Carter Bryant because looking at this roster right now, we’re pretty deep, especially at the three and the four. Like, it’s really going to be hard to find minutes for Carter Bryant early on in the season and especially later in the season if he doesn’t make himself inevitable, right, by just being amazing. But what he said about it is really interesting. Carter Bryant had no hesitations about likely playing with the Austin Spurs next season. Welcomes it because he knows he will get playing time. How rare is this, right? Like, and when I say I didn’t expect this, it’s not that I didn’t expect him to get some run with the Austin Spurs because I think we all sort of did in some way because the Spurs are just so deep. You want to get guys their runs. You want to get reps and the Austin Spurs are looking nasty this year. We made lots of great moves. Of course, Harrison Ingram Riley Mix being back. David Jones Garcia is going to be down there. We got Adam Flaggler who’s a great shooter. We got so many other good guys and again some coaching overhauls. But to get Carter Bryant down there kind of exactly what we need, right? The summer league he was trying to really have the ball in his hands a lot and get those reps. And that’s not maybe what he projects as at the NBA level. But it is something you need to work on. And what’s the best way to do it? Well, it’s to get your minutes. And look, last year even in the NCAA, he was not a high usage guy. He only averaged six and a half points, four rebounds, one assist, 46% from the field, 37% from three, right? like that spot up three and D player who can slash and dunk with some of the best of them on the team is what we project Carter Bryant to do. But you saw those flashes in the summer league, right? Two blocks, three blocks, one block, two block, two blocks. And that game against the Hornets was really the culmination of everything that we wanted to see from Carter Bryant in the summer league. The defense was hounding from the first moment that he stepped on the court, which is something that is going to be there anyway. But that offense didn’t come easy. It seemed to be hard to get into a rhythm for Carter Bryant. The stroke looks good and he looks happy. He looks ready, but I love the fact that he knows like, listen, I He’s like, I’d love to get minutes with the Austin Spurs. He’s looking at the depth chart ahead of them. He’s not He’s not thinking I’m better than these. I’m going to take over these guys right away. I’m sure he probably is thinking that, but looking at the roster, he’s realistic about it. And I love that, right? And again, that to me speaks to the Spurs culture. And it’s why I almost It’s weird when you look at other teams and you look at other sports, that kind of attitude is not common, but it’s way more common for the Spurs. And I think one, it’s because when players come to the Spurs, they see that as the norm and they start to they start to adhere to it. But also, the Spurs draft and bring in players who already kind of have that mindset and I love it. I absolutely love what I’m seeing from Carter Bryant. I’d love to see him dominate in Austin. Now, I do think he’ll get some decent run with San Antonio this season because look, again, like we said, the defense is just so versatile and that athleticism is so good. Like, he’ll almost force himself into minutes, especially if he’s good in the G-League. But the G-League is such a good spot to go down, get the ball in your hands a lot, start to learn how to create, work more on that so that when you get back to the NBA, you kind of have that ability, that skill set that’ll just kind of keep your playing from here a little bit higher. Like that three-point shooting something he’s going to work on anyway, right? The defense something that he, you know, he’s already really good at. But I think Austin’s going to be a great spot for him. I love that he wants to go there and learn. And I’m just excited for this Spurs season cuz there’s so many good things to come out of media day. So many positives heading into this season. I am beyond excited. But I want to hear what you guys have to say. Down below, leave your comments on Carter Bryant. Do you think he’ll end up as a full-time Spur at some point this year or do you see him getting more run? Austin, I’d love to hear from you. That’ll do it for this episode of Spurs Digest. 1. Remember since draft night until two weeks ago when the Haters were saying we don’t need another guard, that we have too many.. soooo..
Both Fox and Harp are injured and Castle will need to start as PG. So I ask you haters, do we have too many guards?
I’ll help you. NO, we do not have enough! This is our season boys… biased as can be but I truly feel Wemby and the boys can shock the NBA this season. Wemby could be the DPOY, MVP and Finals MVP. If Harp wins ROTY, this will be the first time in organized professional sports that a club has had the honors of drafting the ROTY three years in a row.
I don’t think there is a team in the East that can beat SATX in a 7 game series and I think only the Nuggets, Thunder and Wolves can beat them in the West.

  2. Defense wins championships and that's something that Carter Bryant will bring to the table. Imagine on the court: CB with Luke Kornet , Jeremy Sochan , Jordan McLaughlin & Dylan harper? that's Already pretty good, Elite defense all around right there – whheww can't wait! GSG!!

  3. Bryant will get quality minutes as a 1st half menace defender. Then once his shot creation and spot up evolves, he’ll make some players expendable.

  4. Spurs are just being cautious with Fox’s injury eventhough it’s just a minor hamstring injury. With the amount of Achilles injuries last season, I don’t blame the Spurs’ decision to rest him.

  5. We drafted Kawhi Leonard with the 15th overall pick, now imagine that we had to send The Klaw to Austin because our team was already stacked so much that there was no immediate playing time and room for him to grow with the Spurs. It's insanity to even think that anyone would question the Spurs winning a championship this year, everybody saying oh I hope we just make the playoffs. If things work out with the players we have; The way I believe they're going to go. This is going to be an Uber successful campaign. Respect and anticipate Austin winning everything as well, fellow South Texans; if you want to save a few bucks one month Hit up a few Austin games instead of Spurs games to show support, I'll see you there.
