MLB Network | Michael Kay GOES CRAZY on New York Yankees HUGE LOSE to Blue Jays 10-1 in Game 1 ALDS

10-1 loss. And when you look at it, you’re going to look back at that sixth inning. Yankees had the bases loaded, nobody out. The strike out by Judge on a clear ball four. Then they bring in Varin later on in the inning. He strikes out uh Stanton on 101 mph fast. Then the Yankees had to go to Luke Weaver. And Luke Weaver has now faced six batters in the postseason. All six have reached. And I think the Yankees are going to have to recalibrate and really decide whether or not they’re going to use him in any kind of big spot again this year. We talked about what they could expect from Heel on our pregame show and I said I thought if they got five solid innings, they would be happy with that. Heel couldn’t even get through three. He allowed two home runs to the first five batters of the game. All that being said, he left the game only down by two runs. Michael brought up how the Yankees had a golden opportunity in the sixth inning and didn’t cash in and then the game drifted away against their bullpen late. So, a really rough way to start the ALDS. Guys, we’ve been talking this whole postseason. I know it’s all short sample size, but it’s going to come down Aaron Judge and it’s going to come down to John Carlos Stanton. And you look at that top of the sixth inning. Base is loaded with Aaron Judge up there. But Michael, you mentioned the 3-2 split finger out of the strike zone. He gives a gift of a strikeout. Bellinger able to get a run on a walk, but you mentioned the stand at bat. Those two guys in that lineup in that inning with the bases loaded. That was your chance to do some damage. And it’s also interesting to note, I think important to note that there is a tariff to pay for getting into the postseason as a wild card because the Yankees had to start Luis Heel today and the Blue Jays started the guy they wanted to start. The Yankees have not felt good about Heel in all of September. He’s aiming the ball. He’s trying to be an artist. I think they started him today and they were holding their breath. But before anybody gets down about this, you have to realize the rest of the pitching lines up beautifully for the Yankees. We all said it on the pregame show. This was a game that the Blue Jays had to win and they won it. He comes in in a 2-1 situation. He would be the first to tell you, you can’t walk the first batter and that’s exactly what he did coming into the postseason. He had never had an outing at the major league level where he failed to record an out. Now he’s had two in the postseason. So I think as the Yankees move forward, we talk about circle of trust. I think Luke Weaver has probably been pushed out of that, but you have to figure out who’s going to get you some of those big outs. Well, Aaron Boon said it perfectly. Luke Weaver, it’s not a stuff issue. The fast ball still has plenty of velocity. The change up is decent, but if it’s not a stuff issue, what is it? He’s got he’s got a confidence issue going on right now after a couple of rough outings. And you can see that look in his eyes. So, there’s got to be a pivot here. Is it going to be Doval? Is it going to be bringing Williams in earlier in the game? And what it really comes down to, your next three starting pitchers really have to give the Yankees length to eliminate a lot of these questions. And and Weaver really should not be a shock to anybody. If you watched him pitch this year, it’s a lot of this. It’s a lot of what we’ve seen. He is not the guy that he was last year without Luke Weaver. They don’t go to the World Series last season, but this is not the same pitcher. I don’t know if it’s confidence. I don’t know what it is. They say the stuff is the same, but they’re going to have to figure out who they could use tomorrow if Freed doesn’t give them seven plus because can you go Dal again after you face six batters? I’m not sure you can. Are you going Weaver again? You’re probably not. And Cruz has been used a lot as well. But one quick thing I wanted to note the and it turns out to be nothing in this game. Why you pinch run at two to one and then he’s asked about it. He goes, I just changed my mind. I mean, that was big because you wasted three pitches where Cababayro could have stolen. Even the best base Steelers need to see the the pitcher a lot before they could go. You wasted three pitches. He never got to second base. That was an odd non-decision. Yeah, I think he’ll maybe in favor of Will Warren. Well, the next time you’d see him would be in the ALCS, so obviously you’re going to have to rethink it. And this should not come as a surprise if you watch this guy pitch after coming off the IIL. I know he won four games in his last four starts, I believe. But, you know, there’s going to be a Sai Young award winner out of the National League that has 10 wins. Wins don’t really matter that much in the analytic world. This guy struggled every single start with command. Yeah. I mean, Judgy gets him there 3-2. Um, and he had he had thrown a good heater down just down earlier in the at bat that Judge did a good job of laying off and then he looked like a split off that same line away. Um that probably got him to expand a little bit and then uh uh belly belly walked. Um Benny Benny missed one. Probably a pitch he you know got a decent pitch to hit there and popped it up and then uh Vlin executed a good heater to to G that he was late on. Starting pitching had been such a strength in the wildard series for you. Was it their approach today or just heel just didn’t have it on the mound? Yeah, I I think a little bit. I think they, you know, they were hunting top of the zone a little bit and, um, I thought put a lot of good swings on him. Um, you know, but, you know, live with the two solo shots were were were in the game there and he did enough like we felt like we could still piece it together there and um, you know, kind of hung around and and just, you know, weren’t able to punch through like we needed to in the in in an inning where we had a chance at a big one. Okay, Andy up front on your left. Uh, in the second you had Blackburn up alongside Hill, would you have considered Warren for length if um if it hadn’t been the middle of the inning if you could have given him a clean inning or was it the lefties that you wanted to go? Well, more more I wanted to if I was going to go early to the pen, I wanted to get a situation where I had Hill where you know that he’s going to get most of the lefties without pinch hitting probably early in the game. So, and then if you got to at some point if depending on leverage of the game, you know, will comes into play. And uh could you see Dval I know it’s one outing his postseason debut and considering some struggles elsewhere moving up on the pecking order to some high leverage. He was it was good to see another one. You know, that’s that’s kind of how he finished the season right there. Um his last few were were really good. that I feel like he cleaned up some things with within his setup and his delivery and um yeah, that’s I mean that was really efficient, really good attacking the strike zone with with obviously that stuff. So another encouraging one for Camilo. You think you’ll have him tomorrow too? Uh we’ll see. Um you know hopefully, but we’ll see. Go to Brian For back on your left. Aaron, how concerned are you with what you’re seeing from Luke Weaver right now? Yeah. Um, again, not a stuff issue. Um, you know, obviously command is usually a strength for for Weave, losing the first guy, you know, on four pitches there and then looked like a couple of change ups that just kind of were flat and up and out over the plate that Santanderek got and Jimenez with the drawn in infield. So, um, you know, it can click like that because because the stuff is there. We just got to, you know, get him locked in with his delivery. Other questions for Aaron? Go to Gary and then Greg. Aaron, you had a caviar pinch pinch run mid at bat. Why not do that to the start of the at bat? Yeah, I just changed my mind first couple pitches into it. That That’s all. Other questions for Aaron? Uh Brendan, you can stay over there. Cruz had um Guerrero 3 0 before the sack fly. Did you consider walking him there? Just No. No. Not 5-1. Not going to put another base runner on. With Cruiser out there, we got to get a swing and a miss or or something. Um but not in that score situation. No. He’s got a lot of weak contact. You know, he’s making pitches when he needed to. Um, I feel like guys are putting the ball in play, but you know, just not getting, you know, kind of stringing a couple hits together and kind of getting those big big swings when we needed them. Um, now we did a good job making pitches when we needed to. We got a stressful stressful inning there late. about. Mhm. Yeah, definitely not the outing we wanted, you know, not the result we we wanted at all. Um that being said, I I I think we had a really good plan of attack tonight. Um but obviously, you know, um not not the results we we wanted there. Two solo shots, Guerrero and Kirk. Just what makes this lineup so difficult to the Blue Jays lineup so difficult to navigate through? Yeah, definitely. you know, you want to you want to execute pitches against this lineup, you know, at at the same time, they’re big league hitters, you know, um they’re there to swing the bat, and they were able to do that tonight. Um but I I think um you know, I have full confident confidence in in my teammates and I know we’re going to come back strong tomorrow. Did you expect Boon to get you there in that third inning? [Music] Yeah. No, I I wasn’t expecting that, you know. Um but at the same time, you know, who needs the manager, you know, he makes he makes those calls. Uh this is a playoff game. um a little different from from the regular season and um you just got to keep back and you know change. Was that a location issue or just a swing or what? Yeah, we’re we’re trying to go down with that change up, you know, and I left it up in the zone and and he made good contact there.

  1. The MLB umpires cheat the Yankees into post season play perennially. When they get into the post season, they call it straight because of the scrutiny, and the whole world is watching. It was ever thus. MLB profits plummet when the Yankees dont make the playoffs. This is pro sports, people. Professional. That means for money. When Jimmy Key pitched for the Blue Jays, the umps gave him a fraction of an inch off the plate. When he pitched for the Yankees, they gave him a full inch off the plate. True champions will overcome bad officiating.

  2. Aaron Judge plays 162 regular season games like a beast! Then he goes to bed! Kiké, Mr October Hernandez sleeps through the regular season then come October, he wakes up and becomes a Monster! 😂😂😂Choke vs clutch genes! It’s coded in the DNAs. Can’t blame Judge! Gotta love Kiké!

  3. I swear its like none of these analysts looked at the statistics. This wasn't necessarily a game that the Jays NEEDED to win. The Bluejays perform extremely well against LHP. Literally rank top 3-4 in every major statistic against LHP. So believe me when i say the Yankees needed this game just as much

  4. Jays Fans should not get too cocky. Yes they won one but it’s only one. I have watched the jays all year and a couple of weakness come to the fore. They cannot hit good pitching. Watch how Vlad is pitched to and you will understand why he does not really hit homers. Barger is an automatic out now as the opposing pitchers have got his number. Schneider is almost an out and comes down to his discipline at the plate. He knows the zone but sometimes the Umpires don’t and he gets burned. Springer will not be effective as they will get him to chase with crap pitches as he watches good ones go into the strike zone. I hope Jays will win but with the good pitchers coming up I doubt it.

  5. Jays going to load up on righties with those left handers coming up and kick them out by 5th inning to get into bullpen and bring in left hand bats mid game, jays got a better strategy sorry Yankee fans, go jays go

  6. It was Bichette before the game and told the team to pound these Yanks and prove we are better even without me after that 3-2 loss injury at nyc, Jays are pissed persuing redemption sweep!!!

  7. Yankees need to take the first pitch sometimes and wait for a strike when pitcher's control is off. Please stop swinging at pitches that are low and outside even if a lot of umps incorrectly call balls strikes there. Some patience and discipline please.
