MLB Network BREAKDOWN Milwaukee Brewers dominate Chicago Cubs 9-3 in Game 1, lead ALDS series 1-0
You always trying to win one on the road. Yeah, you have to steal one. So, yeah, you trying to steal one. I mean, you have to be crazy not to know their pitching situation without having uh you know, their their big guy and Cade, you know, and however you look at Kade. I think the one thing that you have to hang your hat on if if if you a fan that’s watching this team is they’re battling. They you you have to you you have to go out and do everything possible to win the wild card to get to this spot. Mhm. Right. You you asking guys to do things that’s not typically what you see them do. And so when you make this decision, I if I was there, I would have to say it’s okay. We know they can run. When you look at it, they’re first in stolen bases with 164 of them. So you’re trying to figure out a way if they do get on base. How do I stop them from running? Well, I get a guy on on the mount who who had 11 pickoffs in the season. Okay. Maybe we try to steal three innings from him and then hit the bullpin before you reset the rotation. Whatever the case may be, you lost. You got your bus kicked. You didn’t match their energy. Whatever. And it’s hard to match energy when you get, you know, you you you get beat down in the first inning. It’s hard to come back for that because it knocks the fire right out of you. But I know one thing, you get a day off, you get to come back Monday and do it again. And I and I would hope I won’t say guarantee. I just hope the energy is matched as far as understanding the importance of trying to get that one on still that one on the road and then come home because there’s always an advantage for a team that’s as good as the Brewers to say, “Hey, we we we going to win two here then go there and try to fight for that third one before we come back home.” And if there’s one thing that needs to be kept in mind by Craig and the Chicago Cubs is that even though the Brewers, they may get down, this is a squad that’s never out. You and I talked about it after it was one to nothing. We were over there getting our lunch and before we even had our orders and we’re walking back over here, the Cubs, they were in a deficit. Yeah. Well, you you you have their full lineup back in full effect. Now, I mean, you know, going to game two, we’re going to see with Jackson Churio how that unfolds with the hamstring situation. And I always hate to say, well, you know, that’s the fortunate thing for the Cubs. That’s an unfortunate thing for the game. And Jackson, you know, is a stud for this game. You hate to see injuries, you know, knock knock a star player out of the game. But you’re looking for the advantage. And and when when you think about this game, it might not be Jackson Churro. It might be the fact that you walked Joey Ortiz twice, you know. So all these little things play a big factor in and in in how you go about your business. But I know also another thing, you have to stop striking out so much if you’re the Cubs. You put the ball in play. I mean, when you watch the Brewers at bats, they’re and I’m not saying I’m trying to I’m not trying to compare the Brewers to their off. No, what I’m saying is you strike out way too much on pitches in the zone. Mhm. It’s just too many of for for for a team that is pretty good at hitting, you know, hitting pitches in the zone and doing some damage when they’re when they’re on, you know, when they’re on track. But, I mean, to watch the strikeouts and the quickness of their innings, it it’s just I mean, and and and this DS, the Brewers will send you packing in three games if you don’t go out there and put this offense. I don’t think so. I think when you look at how they’ve gone about their whole season, um there’s been a lot of adversity throughout the whole year. A lot of doubt too as well. Well, doubt based on the fact that pitching is what you know in the postseason you start seeing win games. I mean we talk about offensively slug and so on so forth. It can go back and forth in that area, but you know when when you look at these teams and most teams have some big big game pitcher who’s not there, but these type of plays make you hurry. There there’s a reason why they always put a lot of emphasis on putting the ball in play and and not striking out because you make the defense make plays. You you you know you look at that at bat by Blake Perkins 10 pitch at bat. These guys play with a chip on their shoulders. That’s coming from their manager, right? Is it you know there’s not a lot of superstars on their squad but flip the script. There’s not a lot of superstars on the Cubs either. And I’m not saying they they play with a chip, but I think they hear the noise, the outside noise that they don’t have enough pitching, they don’t have enough this. They have enough heart, and heart is what you need in the postseason. I’ve been on winning teams that we might have been short-handed here and there, but you rely on the next man up. You rely on guys to go out there and get the job done. They have a great defense. They can put the ball in play, you know, more than we’ve seen them do. Because I think when I just spoke about the strikeouts, I’m watching the game through different lenses of this offense going, you you miss too many pitches in the zone that they have to clean up. We talked about runs and scoring position. They was one for 13 in the past series. You have to clean that up. So, they have the guys to do what we’ve seen them do really good and that score runs and get some outs when when when needed. It’s just today, you know, you run into a buzz out early like that, it’s just hard to come back from period. Yeah. What a result for the Milwaukee Brewers 9 to3 as they thump the Cubs. was a six-run margin of victory, the largest in postseason history for a team that allowed three more home runs than they hit. Three zip was the edge there in home runs for the Cubs. By the way, Jackson Chur the reagravation of the Hammy injury. He does become the first player ever to collect three hits within the first two innings of a postseason game. Freddy Peral, the story though for the Brewers. Nine strikeouts, tying the Brewers single game postseason record. Here he is with Lauren Jabara. He was the star of the game. Freddy, you came out here and you set the tone for your team early. I know you told me yesterday you like going up against some of the best offenses. It brings out the best in you. How were you able to set the tone for your team today from the first inning? You know, it wasn’t easy, but uh I’m thankful that I was able to to do what I what I have to do today and help the team uh to get the win. And for some reason, I feel I feel that I didn’t did a lot because the offense, you know, they they they score a lot of runs. But uh I knew uh what what team thing I was facing. So they’re really good and but I un uh like I was able to get the outs. Yeah, you were able to get that outs. Nine strikeouts, too. How does it allow you to approach hitters differently, settle into your rhythm when you get so much run support early in the game? Nine runs in the first two innings for you guys. Yeah, I think you know I think that I got to give credit to William Su. Uh he was able to to call a great game and and we couldn’t do this if we wen’t together. So about the offense, you know, it’s great when you have when you have old guys like that, old hitters like fight it up and they were like that from the beginning and hopefully they stay like that because they they look great. Freddy was amazing. I know you said you eat fruit before game. So go get yourself a meal now. I have to. Yeah, I have to. Thank you. Congratulations on the win. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Great stuff there from Lauren Jabara on the call. Uh meantime, Freddy Peralta, I mentioned the most strikeouts in a single postseason game in Brewers history. Look at the names on that list. Brandon Woodruff, Yavvana Gar, and Don Sutton. Yes. Going back the 82 ALCS. That’s right. The American League game. He had nine in that game again for Peralta. 9-1, 1.77 RA in 17 starts at home. Absolutely fabulous to American Family Field as anticipated. So, the Brewers thump the Chicago Cubs. Here’s the losing manager, Craig Council. How different does it um does it get for you right away? Um, yeah. I mean, in games like this, um, yeah, I mean, that’s that’s why we had somebody up with 20ome pitches into the game. Um, so you try to be aggressive. You know, they they did a great job in the first inning, man. I mean, I I mean, that’s bottom line. They had really good at bats. They hit some balls. They hit balls hard. Um, they they spoiled pitches. The Perkins at bat was just a great at bat. I mean, just got to give him credit for that. He Matt made some pitches to him and he spoiled him and and ended up with a base hit. It was a really really good major league at bat. Um and you know we obviously the air you know they capitalized on the air. They capitalized on an extra out um very well and then that that cost us for sure. Tony third row Craig over over here. I was just going to ask a little bit more about that error and that the impact it had after, you know, defense obviously was such a big factor in the previous series, but like you just said, the Brewers ability to to capitalize on it as well. Yeah, I mean, I think that’s the big thing is that um you know, they they capitalized it on it. Um you know, we we you know, even with the air could, you know, if we get Ortiz out, it’s 4-1 game. We couldn’t get Ortiz, you know, we walked Ortiz, which was was costly obviously. Cheerio hit a pretty good pitch, did a nice job. Um, but yeah, they they they capitalized on an extra route. John, second row. Uh, Craig, you said you guys and Boyd were both thinking about this moment, you know, right after he came out of game one of of the wild card series. What made you guys think that when you deal talked to the front office and everyone that this was going to be a good matchup for Boyd pitching on three days rest? Yeah, I mean, like I said, I think just we didn’t feel like he the number of pitches that he threw on on Tuesday, um what he’s done all season, been our best starting pitcher. Um those two things. Go to Christina on the far right third row. Just the what Savale was able to give you uh today and how that sets you up. Obviously, we’re going to have off day anyway, but how it sets up the bullpen and pitching staff moving forward. No, I mean I think look, Aaron and Ben did a heck of a job. Um, super important. Um, you know, our our relievers are completely reset. Um, we we can work with Monday’s game however we want to. Um, really really important. Um, both guys, you know, when you’re going to your, you know, third pitcher in the second inning, that could be really problematic even with the off days. Um, so Aeron’s outing, Ben’s outing, you know, especially Aeron’s outing, um, really really saved us. Steve down in the front, Greg, I obviously one loss and not more than one loss, but just given how it went, does it change your view of the series at all? you know, how you see your team, their team, and your chance to win. Well, I mean, we’re down one- nothing. Nothing nothing else changes besides that. It’s one- nothing. I don’t think um you know, I’m not sure we’d manage the game game differently on on Monday. Up one- nothing, down one nothing. So, it it I’m not sure it does. We just we made it harder for ourselves. We got to win three out of four now. Um they got to win two out of four. Other than that, um, you know, we’ve got to do more. We pitched well for the last six innings. We didn’t we didn’t pitch great early. Um, that’s it. Any last ones? Uh, Jesse, far right, Craig. Um, even though we threw 58 pitches, is it is it is three days rest always that dicey sort of situation no matter what because it’s so unusual for pitchers? We we usually see the stats don’t look good after three days. Yeah. I mean, We picked Matt Boyd to pitch. I I don’t know what to say. He pitched. He He pitched. It didn’t go well. We got to make decisions. That was We went with Matt. We’re very comfortable. I was very comfortable putting Matt Boy on the mound today. Whole organization was comfortable putting Matt Boy on the mound today. Any last ones for Craig? All right, Craig. Appreciate it. We’ll see you tomorrow. So, boy goes, just twothirds of an inning. is the fourth Cub starter to ever not make it on the first inning of a playoff game in the first in 80 years. Hank Borowy uh 1945 game, excuse me, we all remembered it fondly. As far as the serious schedule, game two Monday night, 9:08 Eastern, then game three Wednesday if needed. Games four and five Thursday and Saturdays the Cubs and Craig Council will try to regroup. He’s right, by the way, to give some props to Aaron Holly. Four and a third, three hits, no runs, threeks. That does save a couple of arms down the line. We continue here on MLB tonight. Our postgame show involved the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers, man, this offense showed up. The most runs scored in a postseason game. The only time they were better was 1982 World Series game one at St. Louis. They put up nine against the Cubbies and all nine runs in the first two innings. They did not waste time aggressively at the plate. Here’s their manager, Pat Murphy. We’re starting with Todd. Huh? It’s a first. Is that all right? Well, I mean, I didn’t get the choice. Go ahead. I’ll start with an obvious one. What is Jackson’s status right now and what do you know about him? He’s getting the MRI right now. You know, obviously it’s real scary. Um uh having that same hamstring injury to the same leg. We’re hoping that it’s uh something he can come back from soon. We have no idea when that would be. He’s just getting out of the tube right now. We’ll have somebody look at it. Uh yeah, could be devastating. Yeah, great first question. Second round. That was actually be my question. So, I’ll just move on to just how happy were you with the way that your guys responded after that first inning and came out and set that tone. Yeah, we talked during the week. Uh, one of the things we made a point of, or maybe the main thing we talked about is, you know, promise me you’ll be ready the first pitch. When the bell rings, you’re ready. You You don’t get a couple rounds to to figure out whether or not you want to fight. Be ready in the first round. And I thought the guys were were certainly ready. You know, there was things that go unnoticed, but you know, the Perkins 10 pitch base hit. Perks saw 27 uh pitches today. You know, those are the uncommon things that that uh you’re looking for. Perk’s not a guy where you’re thinking all that much offense and and and he was that type of thing, you know. And Freddy was obviously fantastic. Kim and William navigated a really good lineup, a hot lineup, a lineup that’s that’s confident, experienced, uh, ton of, you know, all stars, ton of whatever, and and, you know, they’re a great great club. And I thought Freddy and William did a great job navigating. Stay in second. Murf, with how many strikes Boyd throws, kind of like we talked about earlier today, was the idea for guys to to go up there at least ready to swing early in the count if they needed to? I think that’s I don’t know where people are coming up with. We don’t swing early in the count, but um you know, you got to you got to get your pitch as they say, you know, and Boyd was coming back on short rest. Um, and you know, we hit some balls where they weren’t and we were ready and I I love the at bats. Um, early late, we got a little but their their relief pitching did a great job. Murf, the atmosphere today, you’ve been at a lot of Brewers Cubs games where it’s kind of 50/50. I don’t know if you knew what to expect today, but what did you experience and did that impact the game? It didn’t seem 50/50 for sure. felt like a home game. You know, it definitely felt like a home game. They were difference makers. Um and and our guys feel that. You know, they’re not that experienced and there’s a lot of young guys doing it for the first time and they they they carry with them an awesome sense of responsibility. So, to be ready today was was fantastic. And the fans helped that. I mean, the fans were just they were in it from the first pitch. And um yeah, that’s rare. You know, in the in the when it’s the Cubs series, usually the Cubs have as many fans as we have. So, or not maybe as many, but they’re very very loud. You know, that was that was pretty cool. I thought it was definitely a difference. push in the third uh within that first inning. Just knowing how defensively sound this Cubs team usually is, what did you think of the way your guys capitalized on that mistake from her? That’s a tough ball. That ball’s spinning really funny off of you know off the bat and um you know he’s a go glove performer. So I think that’s just the stroke of luck or you know it’s a aberration. He’s not going to do that a lot, but um he’s one of the best players in the game. He’s one of the best baseball players in the game. And uh yeah, we we you got to have that sometimes to get a big lead or extended innings. So um that’s how we’ve had to do it. Did we homer today? I don’t think we homered today. No. What throw? You just mentioned the players carry an awesome amount of responsibility. Could you expand upon that, where it comes from, what it entails? Yeah, I mean they’ve put this season together for themselves and you know they broke a franchise record for wins and everybody talks about recently in the last how many years since 18 we haven’t won a playoff series. Well, I bet you could count plus 20 teams in Major League Baseball out of 30 that haven’t won a playoff series. But to be there every year knocking on the door with, you know, some of the limitations we have is a credit to them. And this new group, which was, you know, not that many returners and not that many additions, this new group really stepped up and they they want to they’re responsible to each other like, “Hey, I’ll take care of you. You take care of me. Today’s your day, tomorrow will be my day.” And that that team thing, you know, has been evident. Now, that doesn’t make us better than other teams, but, you know, I think other teams are probably doing that, too. But we’ve had a pretty good run of of competing, so we’ll try to keep doing that. But over here in the third, hey Murf, um what was the concern level after the leadoff home run? How did you feel Freddy responded in that first inning? And then how does his approach change after a six-run first inning? Perk. I was just talking about you, man. Big praise, huh? Didn’t I? Yeah. 27 pitches, right? 27 pitches. Yeah. All right. He don’t want to talk to me. Um, what was your question again? So, about about distracted. Was there any concern after the leadoff home run? How do you feel he responded in that first inning? And then how does it change when you put up a six spot? How does the approach change as a starting pitcher after that happens? Well, it’s tougher to pitch six to one than you think. You know, all of us can sit back and go, “Ah, he had a five run lead.” It ain’t easy against a lineup like that. This guy battled, battled, and uh made pitches over and over. Made pitches and him and William together work through this lineup that’s a treacherous lineup that’s seen Freddy many times. You know, those players have been over there playing together for, you know, a number of years and they’ve been good the last years. So, it’s like um for him to do that shows the competitiveness. But, I mean, the leadoff home run, it happens. That Bush kid is he’s one of the best hitters. He’s got to be one of the hottest hitters in the game right now. Um, what a find for them, you know. I mean, what a what a move to get him in the roster. He’s a great hitter and uh yeah, we we were fortunate, but one run doesn’t beat you, but you know, you don’t I think for Freddy, it was a slap in the face and then he responded uh the way you do. Take one more out of [Music] Murf, can you say at this point who would who will start game two for you? No. No, I can’t because we really got to get together and see um you know, you just watched a guy go out there on short rest and what happened to him. You you you know, you got to really work through this thing with the off days and who’s available and what’s our best sequence of doing things. So, we’ll we’ll gather up, the pitching coaches and I will gather up and and um you know, finalize our our stuff maybe later tonight or tomorrow morning. All right. Thanks, Mark. We’ll see you tomorrow. Thanks, guys. My pleasure. You good? You look good. You like it? Yeah. Were you guys going crazy up there? Mhm. Huh? Yeah. Who was Pat Murphy and children? The reason why Murf one of the more well-liked managers in the game for Matthew Boyd, it was a disaster. The Cubs gave up five runs total in the series against the Padres’s very low scoring and this time Boyd gives up six runs in the first inning alone. And the numbers barrel the fact he has not pitched well against the Brewers in his career on short rest did not work out for him. Here he is after the game. More than anything, I think I just did a little better those those pitches that they did hit, you know. I mean, the Cheurio one found found a hole, but the other two, you know, caught too much plate and uh, you know, right pitches just could have been better execution, you know, and and they came out of plan hunting for it and uh, you know, hats off to them. They got You think on the shorter rest that it had any impact on the Christmas of your stuff? No. No. I mean, just put it a few more inches one way and and and that’s just the nature of it, you know, and they just stacked them up and that’s uh you know, that’s on me. They had a good approach and uh um I’ll be ready for the next one. Always say that bullpens before they come out to pitch is really never an indication of what they’re going to do that day. Was there any thoughts? Is that consistent with you? I mean, is there any way to tell? Yeah, you know, it’s all that matters is when the ball’s in your hand on the on the mound, you know, that’s that’s all that matters. Yeah, it was so, you know, Yeah, that’s all that matters is when you’re out there on the mound in a say when it happens kind of as quickly as in that first inning. Yeah. What are you trying to do in that moment to to stay locked in? It can be hard. Yeah, I mean the the goal, you never know what run is going to win or lose a ball game and they had an approach. they went out there, executed it, you know, um they got me on that and then your job is just to continue to keep the game there and uh it was uh that was the goal. You know, it’s hats off to Perkins. He battled me there and um that ultimately was was it for me, but I mean he you know, you never know what run is going to win or lose a ball game. So, you just keep going and uh it’s unfortunate it was such a big inning, but you know, that was the difference in the game today in a series. How important is it what Savali thought did today just for the whole thing? He was huge. Aaron went out there. He uh man, he did a great job. He attacked our lineup and uh man, he definitely, you know, he he ate up some huge innings for that and he did a great job doing it and it was that was huge huge for us. Matt, we’ve seen Nico make countless plays behind you this season. In that moment, just how to see one go past him like that? Oh, yeah. That’s I mean Nico’s so good and uh but you know we’re all human and it’s my job there to to pick him up and that’s you know it’s I point to the Perkins at bat where it’s uh he kept fighting kept battling and um um you know ended up winning it you know whatever 10 plus pitches. So, uh, Nico’s Nico’s so good for us, you know, but it’s it’s my job to to pick him up there and, uh, um, you know, I just, you know, Perkins was better than me in that. Perkins was better than me in that bat. Do you like the day off is good for you guys now? Uh, yeah, we’ll always take a day off when we we can get it, but it’s uh, yeah, we’re we’re a hungry group. I mean, we’re we’re all excited to get back out here and, you know, even up the series, you know, in game two. We’ve learned what type of competitor you are this year. Uh would it wouldn’t surprise any of us if we heard u you tell counsel that you’re ready to go Monday or Tuesday, right? I mean that is that we’ll let those days come when they do. But I am excited for the next time I get the ball in my hand and uh excited to do my part to, you know, help us get to where we want to go. Well, ultimately when it comes to this Brewers team, every Brewer got a hit except for Joey Ortiz and seven different players scored runs. It was a balanced approach. Having said that, not all great news as Jackson Chur suffered a reagravation of the same hamstring injury he suffered earlier this year, said as manager Pat Murphy earlier could be devastating. 29 games he missed from July 30th to August 29th. Uh, by the way, the team went 20 and nine without Jackson Cheerio. So, they survived. Here is Cheerio now with his interpreter giving an update on what his status is. Uh, Jackson, first and foremost, how are you feeling and are you concerned at this point? First and foremost happy that we got the win today and physically I feel good. Few more go to Adam and then Steve. Jackson in that moment you were kind of looking up. You looked frustrated. Were you frustrated to come out of the game or were you frustrated that you felt that again? What were you thinking in that moment? [Music] No, you know, I um it was just frustrated with uh I think the moment, but you know, once um you know, kind of talking and and having the advantage that we had there in the game, uh it was kind of a little bit more uh precautionary to come out of the Steve, I’m just wondering how similar or different do you feel now compared to after that triple when you hurt your hamstring there when you had running that running out that triple against the Cubs? No, I you know I I feel good right now and and you know compared to the to the last time that this happened, I feel like I’m in a in a very good position. Second round. Jackson, have they given you an actual diagnosis? Did they tell you it was a strain or anything? Or are you still waiting to hear on that? [Music] Uh, no. They haven’t said anything. We’re We’re still waiting, but physically I feel good and I feel in a position where I’m I’m ready to keep going and ready to keep competing. Steve, you had a big postseason against the Mets last year. Got off to a really fast start today. What is it about your about you that enables you to kind of play up to play as well as possible in these pressure situations in the postseason? [Music] Uh, yeah, I think it’s the adrenaline, you know. I I love playing in in these pressure moments and uh you know really I just I see it as a blessing you know being able to to compete and uh be able to have the the results that I’ve had. Uh you know but really just just playing in these moments I I treat it as a blessing. Anything else for Jackson? Jackson, how big was it after five days off to come out and do that in the first inning? And did the atmosphere in the stands strike you as different than other Cubs Brewers games? No, you know, I think with the fans, it definitely felt like a different uh environment than than other games we’ve played against them. You know, it uh you could definitely feel them and you could feel the energy that they were bringing. So, you know, it’s kind of like a different different kind of pressure that they brought to the to the game today. and and uh yeah, it was great. [Music] Well, Jackson Churus trying to stay upbeat despite the fact he didn’t reagravate that same hamstring injury. Hopefully, I’m all right and the results come back clean. As far as this game is concerned, Milwaukee just hammers the Cubs nine to3 is the file. They had more than twice as many

alds ??? laughing my ass off
Bro yall still refuse to just say the brewers are the better team….they slaped the 💩 out the cubs…that's it that's all….THEY HAD THE BEST RECORD IN THE LEAGUE….PUT SOME RESPECT IN YALL REPORTS
Sounds like a lot of excuses, and not just “brewers are better”
Why do so many pro-Cubs analyssts continue to insist that the Cubs will benefit from a day off? Won't Milwaukee?
The Brewers dont have #2 starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff.
This is the same guy that said the Cubs would never 'stoop to the level of the style of the Brewers'
They strike out because they are looking to hit home runs.
This is the Cubs post game, not MLB
Sounds like somebody likes the Cubs
The Brewers are the Rodney Dangerfield of baseball. No respect.
Bottom line the media wants the cubs to win makes me sick
Drunk much?
3:02 oh they sure will
Sounds like a cry baby cub fan behind the desk.
Ahhhh craigy gonna cryyy
