Dallas Stars 2025-26 NHL Betting Preview
What’s going on everyone and welcome into Expected Bets for your go-to podcast for all things hockey betting. I am Gator Betting joined by my two co-hosts. Today we got Franco the Banker and Gretzky Betskies. Guys, the season previews continue to roll here and we are on to the Dallas Stars, the third team in the Central Division. We talked about Colorado, another team who we thought is going to contend for the Central Division. And now we get to the Dallas Stars, who is pretty much neckand-neck with co with Colorado in terms of the odds. Looking at last season, they had a record of 5026 and six, 106 points, finished second in the Central, lost in the Western Conference Final, 4 to1 to Edmonton. Seems like them and Carolina just love to get to the conference finals and kind of just hang out there. They just like that sweet spot of don’t want to put too much pressure on themselves of getting to the Stanley Cup of hey, another successful year. We made the conference finals. Terms of their stats last year, everything looks pretty good. Third in goals for per game, sixth in goals against. Uh they did give up a ton of shots though, which is something we haven’t seen from this team in the past few seasons. Franco, the biggest news this off season as they bring in a new head coach to try to kind of get this team over the hump. What’s your initial thoughts on him in terms of I mean, we talked about Sturm with the Bruins, the Blackhawks bringing a new head coach. We don’t really think they’re going to be around for too long just given the rosters, but this is certainly a much more advantageous position to be put in and a team that can win now. Yeah. I mean, it’s a hard thing to come in and replace the Boore though, right? That for for all his shortcomings, he what was his record in like game sevens? He was like undefeated or something ridiculous, right? Um and he he is a guy that’s that’s been there and won playoff games. So now you’re coming in trying to replace him. It it’ll be tough. I mean, we’ll see. Hopefully, a different voice in the locker room gives you something different here. I thought you said the main addition here was going to be Radic Foxa, but um so yeah, I mean, this was a team that that didn’t really do much. Um obviously, you know, we talked about when we were talking about the Colorado breakdown as far as adding uh Ranton or, you know, them losing Ranton. This is the team that gained him. Um I don’t know, man. I I’m I’m a little bit less excited about this team than I have been in years past. Maybe it’s me being jaded from taking their cup futures two years in a row, thinking they looked really good and them just not being able to get over the hump. Um I still think there’s a little bit of question marks in the back end of that blue line and it it kind of hurt them in the playoffs last year with Labouchkin and, you know, two under um experienced guys in Bishel and Lungquist. So, we’ll see what happens there. The top end of that blue line still looks fantastic, though. And Harley really took a step forward last year. Yeah, Betsky, they did lose a bunch of pieces. Marshman is gone. Grandlin’s gone. CC, Dumba, and Donov all gone. Uh, so there is some spots opening up on this roster, but again, to Franco’s point, they pretty much retain majority of those key pieces heading into this season. Uh what are your thoughts on them heading into 2025 2026? Yeah. Well, and like Granlin is essentially a deadline pickup. That’s so not much of a change there. But I mean the big the big piece on the forward side is Rantin for a full season as mentioned. So, I mean, I think they’re doing the right thing by allowing guys like Baroque to get a little bit more experience and and I know there’s another younger forward that they’re kind of seeing how he’s doing in training camp. I think it’s back and back. Uh, the other one I’ve been seeing that’s on Daily Face Off right now is Justin. I’m going to butcher this. Hi, Sikoan. Rexicanin. Um, I’m assuming both are prospects, though. But, um, I I don’t think they’ll have to rely too heavily on on the young guys to carry this load. And guys like Wyatt are still continually to develop. Uh, Thomas Harley could take another step forward. So, overall, I I like this team. I like this team probably more than I did last season. Um cuz the the one other aspect that we haven’t talked too much about is just I think Auter is about to enter his prime and like really take that next step. And I I’m maybe betting on that a little bit, but um I I think he’s easily the best goalender in the West, right? Oh, hell. Never mind. I’m sorry. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but playoff hell doesn’t count. Yeah, but also had his struggles in the playoff too if we if I believe it was last year. Yeah, to an extent though. Yeah, the first season he was terrific. Uh he kept him in that series. Yeah, he seems so up and down in the playoffs though, right? Like it’s he has a great game and then he has a game where he gives up six goals and you’re like how how’s that how’s that possible? So, I mean, this the stats back up that this is a good defensive team, but we’ll see. Yeah. Looking at their team futures again, last year they had 106 points. DraftKings has their current projected points total at 103 and a half. FanDuel has it at 105 a 12 minus 900 to make the playoffs just like Colorado. plus 225 to win the division, plus 490 to win the conference, and 10 to1 to win the Stanley Cup. So, pretty much identical odds with Colorado. Uh they are, I think, slightly worse to win the division. Any team futures that you’re looking at, Franco? Um I I think it’s kind of interesting that they have their total below what it was last year. Um maybe we’re over overlooking the the loss of Marchment. I mean, I I know he can take some dumb penalties, but he’s kind of like that grit, and I don’t know that they’ve necessarily replaced it. You know, I it’s kind of a missing element to this to what this team has. Um I don’t know that I want to do their regular season points. Again, this is that type of team that could come a little bit down from last year. We’ll see. Um maybe maybe division winner at plus 225. I could see I would rather do that than the point total. Let’s put it that way. 225 feels a lot better. Um again, I I I’m just going to hold off on the conference winner and the Stanley Cup winner. Yeah, Betsy, any looks for you? Yeah, similar similar idea to Colorado. I’d rather get it live if they come out slow or have an injury because um you may be able to get a better price and they’re another team that if if they get in the playoffs, I think they’re built to make it to the cup. Um maybe Colorado is more of the superpower can get them to the cup. This is more of the depth and can help them get there. So yeah, I I’m kind of laying off in the points and division conference winners, everything. Do you guys worry at all about like Ben Sean being just and Duchain even being another year older? I mean that that’s kind of like the backbone of this team. I mean as much as you know it’s Robertson is why they have the young pieces but I mean Sean missed a ton of time last year. Yeah. Ben is like older. Duchain had injury issues and I mean he was a ghost in the playoffs. He had a great season, but I think he led the team in goals. But I don’t know, man. It’s It’s like we we see them, we see the names, and we’re like, “Yeah, it looks good.” But, you know, factoring in like the age is starting to get up there with these guys. That’s true. Yeah. I mean, those are that’s twothirds of that second line right there uh with Duchain Sean. So in terms of awards any looks uh 15 to1 AER to win the VZNA he ranked 22nd last year in goals saved above expected. I think that was one of his worst seasons too when looking at uh his stats. I don’t mind that look uh but that’s kind of the only place that I would go uh in terms of awards for this team. Yeah, I I I think it the way to play the Vzna is get a little bit on Hellabuk and then grab whoever you think’s your second favorite and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and might. Yeah, I like that a lot. 15 to1. There’s some pretty nice value there, too. Yeah, I mean Bucks what won it the last two years. Yeah. Now, do we need to be considering Jack Adams here? Can they was Can they win the President’s Trophy? I don’t know. I don’t think so. This division feels pretty brutal. Like I I think there’s a lot of tough teams here. Yeah. Yeah. No, I’ I’d compare it more to the Atlantic than the Metro by all means. I think they’re going to all beat up on each other kind of a little bit. Yeah. I think the teams in the Central are, if you look at it through an entire picture, I think are stronger than the teams in the Atlantic. If you grouped all eight teams together, yes, I think those middle ground teams in the Central are better than those middle ground teams in the Atlantic. Yes. Yeah. Player futures. Miko Ranton is at 37 and a half goals. He had 32 last year. Points, he’s at 90 and a half. He had 88 last year. Robertson’s at 80 and a half. He had 80 last year. Wyatt Johnston is at 74 and a half. He had 77 71 last year. Any player futures that you’re considering. Aer wins is also 33 and a2. He had 36 last year, 35 the year before, 37 the year before. I like wins, but again minus 115 on a future. I don’t hate it. Um, and I think he probably gets there again, but is Casey De Smith going to take more games this season? Well, yeah, if and if you like his wins, then you should like the point total, too, right? They’re saying his wins go up, but points go down. Also, I mean, just we talked about before his vest 15 to1. If you really want to take a Jake off, I think that’s the way you go. I would go. Yeah, that’s the way you go. Everything seems like way too juiced as far as the numbers for everybody. Like Ranton over his stats last year. Robertson’s over his stats from last year. Same for Wyatt. Yet yet like their point total is less than it was last year. So where where are we supposed to go here? You know, at least Yeah. Mero Heiskinan 60 plus points plus 195. He was hurt last year, only played 50 games. He had 25 points during that span. Looking at the year before, 54 points and 51. The year before that, 73 and 79. I don’t necessarily hate that look at plus 195. No, I don’t at all. But is he going to be on the top power play or is Harley taking that? I think Harley. Yeah. Especially based on the based on the odds here. I mean, yeah, Harley 50 points is minus 310. Give me that. No, minus 310. Don’t take that, please. Yeah. I I wish there was I mean, maybe his 60, you know, maybe go a little bit. I I feel like even money 60 this year. Yeah. I mean, that might be the bad one. Um Yep. So, wait. I think him and Heis have Oh, never mind. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Yeah. to get 60 this year. Harley’s at even money. Ice Cadan’s at plus 195. So, I think that says it all right there. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. I want Give me Give me Harley at 60. I think that’s great. Yeah. Give me Give me the young upand cominging guy that It’s crazy. I mean, I feel like we were all very high on on Hastan for for um Norris a couple years ago at least to an extent and now it’s like we’ve all kind of not sour but Yeah. Harley at 70 points is plus 450. I don’t know if I want to go that high. Yeah, I want to ensure I want to be insured. He’s on the top power play unit. Yeah. Any thoughts on Johnston points? Um 80 plus is at plus 250. It just depends on the role he’s he has. You know, as of now, they’re projecting him on the third line. Is he going to stay down there? I know they like to move him up and down, but I don’t know. Yeah, he he’s a guy like I would just like to bet when he gets hot in season. I think that’s fair. Any other props you guys are looking at for the Dallas Stars? Not. We weren’t as high as on him as I thought we would be. Uh I know they’ve been given a lot of preseason love, but when you do look at that aging core, you’re like, how many more years do they really have? Yeah, we said this about Boston though. This is a team though. A couple injuries pile up. I said this the year they got the freaking Yeah. They’re going to do that. They’re going to do what Boston did. I just worry, man. Like with with age just comes more injuries and this Yeah. forward group is going to look really brutal. I mean, even right now, like I don’t love back being on the second line. I mean, maybe that doesn’t stay that way. their winger depth doesn’t look as good as it has near pass. Like if Bourke works out, like yeah, that could be good, but we don’t know what he’s going to be. We don’t I don’t really haven’t seen much from back so far. Um I don’t know, man. And Jamie Ben is like 40. I thought Bourc. Is it Bourke or Baroque? It’s Borc. Is Bourc like the painter? No. I thought Bourc looked good at the end of last season. He’s shown flashes, but then they wouldn’t play him in the playoffs, you know? So, like we’ll see. We’ll see what this new coach does, you know? Like, is he going to do what Deborah did and and shelter the kid or is he going to give him a shot? Like to me, I’d rather see him up on the second line than Sean. Like, we know what Sean is. Yeah. Well, asking you shall receive if Sean gets hurt. So, I don’t know. I This team knows how to draft, too. So, if I’m not going to count out any of their prospects that have a insane rookie season or sophomore season or whatever. Yeah. Yeah, that’s very true. Yeah. No. Uh no player in the market for the Calder. So, can avoid that. Any other bets before we wrap up? No. Perfect. All right.
