INCREDIBLE RED WINGS NEWS! JUSTIN HOLL & ERIK GUSTAFSSON ON WAIVERS + PROSPECTS MADE THE TEAM
Hey, hey, what do you say? It’s a Detroit Red Wings miracle today because we had ourselves so many names enter the NHL waiver wire on this day, Sunday, October 5th, that there are just too many names to even fit onto one page. With this in mind, let’s just go over to Frank Sarah’s tweet talking about notable players to enter the waiver wire today, which includes a select number of defensemen from the Droid Red Wings. Oh my goodness, man. Justin Hall and Eric Gustoson have been waved today. And you know what that means? With these two guys placed on the waiver wire, it means somebody might have stolen their jobs now, didn’t they? Let’s head over onto the Detroit Red Wings subreddit and read what fans are saying in response to this news. The Red Wings place and Gustoson on waiverss. Oh my gosh. Okay, it is happening. This is the best Red Wings day since the last time they waved Justin Hall. Holy crap. The rookies are here to stay. Let’s go. Two out means two in. I think there was space for one of them to begin with. So, I think they can keep all three for 23. All right. So, there you go. 25 on the roster. Two out means that the rest can stay. And I think, you know, just thinking about what this means for the Red Wings. This is such a There’s no effing way for anyone who remembers the Babcock days. Insanity. So hyped up to watch things go down now. Do you not remember just a few years ago when Dylan Lin was a young guy? I mean, Larkin’s still kind of a young stud right now, but he was drafted over a decade ago. And when he made the Detroit Red Wings, that was sort of the status quo of that team. Veterans, no young guys, all the immediate drafted prospects got some time developing in their junior leagues or college or the AHL. Even with Cider and Edmonson, you can say there was a little bit of extra patience tossed out there. But now, I mean, we’re seeing Axel Sandine Pelica earn himself a spot with the Detroit Red Wings. It says Grand Rapids Griffin’s on here right now. That’s probably going to change. And you think about some of the other guys that have made impacts on this team. Michael Brans new guard EMTT Finny ASP. Three of them are staying because there was already space for one of these guys to begin with. The departure of Hall and Gustoson means that the roster is now fixed. At least that’s what we’re going to assume based off of the workings of today. Not to dance on anyone’s grave, but this is a power move by the Detroit Red Wings. I just pumped my fist to myself. Yeah, I feel terrible celebrating the destruction of dude’s careers, but I want to win and I want the rookies to come up. It has to happen. And here’s a good way to rationalize it. The way I look at it is the dude’s career could have ended a couple of years ago, but we saved him by offering him a contract. The eye test said he’s been done for a while. It was just a matter of time. The unsung hero in all of this is Ian Mitchell. Him having a good camp and Mlullen trusting him as a safety blanket helped make this possible. Ian Mitchell and Jacob Bernard Docker, two very underrated signings. Now, you might be wondering, what does that mean? like Mitchell was already sent down a few days ago, so I’m not sure what you mean. Abilair goes out there and replies, “There is a chance that one of Justin Hall or Eric Gustoson gets claimed, which means that the Red Wings would need somebody in Grand Rapids that seems capable to call up when someone gets injured. They still have Harmonic and Lagansen and the kids in GR, but he would be in the mix, I suppose.” So ultimately, we got to give our props to Eric Gustoson and Justin Hall. And I know you might be asking yourself, why? Why do we have to give these guys props? Yeah, I’m just trying to be curtious here, folks. Just trying to be sentimental to two players who got their jobs stolen from them at the NHL level. I mean, stolen. It’s not like Justin Hall was doing anything to deserve a chance in the NHL to begin with. We all kind of recognize that when he was signed on by the Detroit Red Wings a few years ago, that it was kind of a mistake. Signed on till the end of this upcoming season, 3.4 million bucks a year, Justin Hall is overpaid as all heck. He does not provide anywhere near the value he should for that dollar amount. And you could always say that there was a bit of a pride thing here, right? I mean, they waved Justin Hall last time. He’s still in the organization, so they’re waving him again. There was always going to be a level of pride and ego being hurt on behalf of Steve Eisermanman when you think about Justin Hall getting sent down. It’s like, why are you sending down a 3.4 million guy? Ah, it’s because he sucks. Oh, wait a minute. Why did you give a guy who sucks 3.4 million bucks? It’s not like everybody knew that he was garbage in Toronto. Multiple 20 point seasons. That’s actually not bad to be honest. But that production did not justify the defensive inefficiencies and the poor defending that he had in Detroit. Justin Hall didn’t produce 20 point seasons. So obviously there’s not a lot to cheer for there. But now based off of the events of today, I mean Steve Eisermanman’s got to be praying that somebody goes out there and claims this guy, right? Any team need a right-handed defense who’s making 3.4 million bucks? Who knows? If it’s not Justin Hall, maybe it’s Eric Gustoson, who himself is making $2 million a year till the end of this upcoming season. These guys, assuming they get claimed, are going to have themselves NHL opportunities, but if they don’t, off to Grand Rapids, y’all go, I guess. Gustoson, to his credit, did produce 18 points in 60 games with the Red Wings last year. He has been a very strange to follow offensive defenseman who had some pretty solid years with various teams. his 60point season in 79 games that the Blackhawks stands out as a very big plus. In fact, this was seen as quite the standout year and it’s why we talked about Gustoson as an underrated Redwing back when he was acquired initially. Hey, guess what? Who was on the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018-19? Well, you had Gustoson, you had Debrink, and you had Patrick Kane. So, all these guys were going out there and producing. Now, they’re in Detroit. Let’s see if they can replicate that level of production. No, sorry, they can’t really. Or at least Gustoson didn’t. The point production from him was okay, but it wasn’t 60 point caliber like it was in the past. But ultimately, just based off of the way these guys have played in the preseason, I mean, it’s very clear to see Axel Santine Pelica is a much more valuable player, especially nowadays. He really came into his own over the course of the past few preseason games. I thought that he actually had a pretty rough start in the preseason, but as the thing has continued, he’s definitely started to be a lot more confident and looking a lot more solid, taking that swagger, that pizzazz that he had in Sweden and bringing it to the NHL game. It’s true that ASP kind of struggled in the Grand Rapids Griffins, but I’m starting to think maybe the Griffins just weren’t fitting for him and his style. We know the AHL is a little bit more physical. guys aren’t necessarily as quick as they are in the AHL compared to the NHL. So when you think about Axel Santi Pelica’s game, yeah, he doesn’t play a physical bodychecking forcheing style. He’s just there doing his moves, doing his deaks, doing his dangles, and controlling the play up top. That style, you can say, is a lot more fit to the National Hockey League game versus the AHL game. So, if he’s able to control the play like he did in the preseason for the Detroit Red Wings fulltime in 82 games this upcoming year, then that’s great. And then you think about the other two guys that also made the team based off of the results of today’s waiverwire situation. Emtt Finny, such a strong player. This guy was a seventh round pick just two years ago. How in the heck was a seventh round pick this good? He’s now a Redwing pretty much. And you also have yourselves Michael Brangard who led the preseason in points. I mean, there’s no denying what he’s been capable of doing this pre-season. Times are changing with the Detroit Red Wings. Man, it’s a 20-year-old, a 20-year-old, and a 20-year-old. Three 20-year-olds all making the team in 2025. Michael Brans Nugard will be 21 in Oh, actually, no, it’s his birthday today. Oh, he’s 20 now. Hey, happy birthday to Michael Brans Nugard. He shares a birthday with Mario Lemieux. Three straight 20-year-olds all finding themselves on the Detroit Red Wings to start out this 2526 campaign. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. Bye Holl, we barely miss you
Hey! ASP was great in SHL last season, and the last few pre season games he played more confident like he did in SHL
Thank God
Hurray !!! so glad to see these stiffs go and get to see these young prospects play . Its going to be a great season .
You are the bomb. TY
Getting waived means they won't be there in the lineup on Opening night?…Gus for 2 mil I could see possibly getting claimed.
What’s the average age of our D? 👀
Why do you say "Nugard", in Norwegian it is pronounced "Neegor".
It almost feels like, 'the fans have spoken and Stevie listened'.
Exactly what Red Wings needed; this is what we have been waiting for for seven years, at least since our Hall of Famer GM, LGRW for life.
Detroit has the worst blue line in the Atlantic division. I'm hopeful that will change soon. LGRW!
Oh happy day!!!
3 rookies? This should be a fun season.
Any chance Gustafsson get claimed by a team ?
Nygaard baby!!!! 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴
Bye Felica
I don't feel bad at all over them getting waived. They still get paid until the end of their contract. Another team might pick them up. If they could play in the AHL and still get paid. They could join professional tryouts for next season.
Sure it's not ideal for them, but that's the results of their own performance.
Funny that I woke up this morning thinking how disgusted I was that they didn't waive Gus and Holl. A couple hours ago I saw this and thought "Finally! We've turned the corner.".
Can’t say I’m surprised with somebody ending up lagging behind in terms of the veterans but to say it was gonna be gustafsson caught me off guard. It’s not the worst thing but a much harder decision than holl. The kids come thru once again in a big way if that’s happening.
Justin holl and Gustafson waived ??!?!?!
I used to pray for times like this
I hope somebody picks up holl. Unlikely, but maybe.
So pumped!! I seriously think MBN is a future 40 goal scorer. Get these guys rolling. I love this.
This is good news. Rookies pushing veterans out of jobs! That’s what competition is all about. Gus could likely get picked up. Asp has developed each preseason game last game he was the best I’ve seen of him. Why trade for karlson for offense with no defense and his contract when we have a 20 yr old with basically the same skill set he brings to the table? I’m happy we have some fresh blood that beat out two veterans and hope we push for that playoff spot this yr!
I really want to see more of carter bear in the future, the kids got game.. im glad the prospects are getting their chance! These kids are the future of the Red Wings
Great moves. Bring in the youth, energy and competitive drive.
Tie goes to the veteran?
This is why the NHL got rid of ties. 😀
LGRW!!!
ASP out manuvered the other D with ease holding him up would be a sin.
W
Not surprised about Holl. Gus is surprising. Still think ASP is in GR by game 10.
The core has arived all the Yzerman doubters can take their back seat where they belong.
Do we have the youngest blue line now?
Hold your horses there, Lego. As of right now only 2 of those 3 is 100% on the opening night roster. Obviously with the waivers today ASP has made the team. They're still carrying 14 forwards and generally will only carry 13. Finnie and MBN don't need waivers to be sent down but neither Bergrren nor Soderblom was put on waivers so it looks like they'll both stay in Detroit. McLellan even said yesterday that the roster they have on Monday may not look the same come Thursday because their focus on Sunday/Monday is to get the roster to 23 players. Which is to say, I'm reserving my excitement for Finnie and MBN until the rest of the week plays out.
The Holl and Gustafsson moves make sense because Gus wasn't needed to run PP2 with ASP fitting in well in that spot and at least Holl will get regular minutes in GR instead of spending most of the season in the press box. ASP brings at least the same amount of defense as those two guys and brings more offensively, in retrievals and in the transition game so it was probably a no-brainer for Detroit to keep him up. It was very telling when McLellan was talking about veterans who don't realize that they need to fight to keep their jobs and these two clearly failed to do that this preseason.
If Holl stays gone, I'll start watching more Wings hockey.
Younger players finally moving up
