Patrick Williams Suffers Training Camp Injury | Billy Donovan’s Defensive REVOLUTION Begins

Not even a preseason game in and Patrick Williams goes down with another injury even though it doesn’t seem too serious. This is one of those seasons that I do think it’s important for Pill to attack and to attack early. Apparently, he went down in practice today. Um, you know, coming down and trying to run. Uh, Billy Donovan explained it as maybe his shoe got caught up kind of underneath him. He he rolled an ankle. Doesn’t seem like it’s anything too serious. He was able to return to practice and be on the stationary bike on the sideline, but did not, you know, get up and down, get on the court, those type of things. Uh, they’re probably trying to see if any swelling develops or anything like that. But, uh, Ced, I personally think that this is a like there’s too much going on like the the the depth chart. There’s there’s a lot of players that are all kind of gunning for one spot for the Chicago Bulls in in that 10th man spot in the rotation. I know Pete Will is getting the $18 million contract, but I just think if it feels like this year in training camp, the Bulls are really truly coming with that. Who’s ever bringing it the most and consistent? That’s who’s going to get the playing time. How do you feel about this with Pill? I feel really bad for the kid. Even though really my opinion of Patrick Williams is like everyone else is just clear disappointment, I still thought that he deserved and he probably still get the opportunity that with the news about the the ankle that it ain’t that serious. I’mma pray for the kid. Um the kid just got a just a lot of bad luck. Um I’m just going to give him that. He’s been injured for six plus 60 games over the last two seasons. um he had he’s just having a horrible time getting himself in in motion and finding finding a rhythm in this in this league of ours, bro. Um I know he’s look at his athletic gifts. He’s athletic to the core. Strong kid. I think he’s a good kid, too. Uh but it’s just not impacting the team as much as everybody thinks that he should be. And maybe this is him. He’s nine and four. That’s what Patrick Williams is. He’s nine points, four rebounds when he coming off the bench or when he’s starting. That doesn’t mean that he’s a a bad bad player, but expectations should be lowered for Patrick Williams. And if it ain’t Lord at this point, you’re an enabler. Let this kid earn everything that he’s that he uh deserves. Uh now when it comes to this this competition um especially at the at the wings and the three of the four Patrick Williams he was up against it man. You got a guy like Kevin Herder who I think Don uh Billy Donovan likes. He likes a shooter in the lineup. You got Noah Essen just got uh drafted. He’s athletic. He’s sort of like Patrick Williams. We still got to develop this guy. Uh, and then you got a newly acquired Isaac Aoro who seems like he’s the guy to be the starter for the Chicago Bulls. We’ll talk about that in a minute. It’s just too much competition for Patrick Williams to have this bad like a injury before the even the season even starts. I hope that he can uh heal up pretty quick um and really get a fair shot at uh earning minutes uh with this team and being in a rotation and impacting this team in a positive way. I still think that he can do that, but we just got to calm down the expectations for Patrick Williams. Yeah. I mean, and and this is the season where it really does feel like everybody’s kind of just settled in on like whatever Patrick Williams shows is what he shows, right? like he’s not going to come in and he’s not going to like just walk into a starting role like it like it seems like he’s done before. Especially when you look at them like they like Patrick Williams should take it personally that they brought in Isaac Auroro who literally is like he does everything that you’re supposed to do. It’s not like he’s he hasn’t been a better scoreer than P will. He’s he’s a really good defender like Pee Will is. I I would probably give Akoru the advantage uh defensively slightly just because he is more aggressive. But really when you look at Pew Will they both came in with near 40 inch verticals like right I think Isaac was right at 40 PE was at like 39 and a half like very similar like if anything PeeWee will a little bit bigger than Isaac Aoro right but you brought him in and he like Billy Donovan didn’t even mention you in the battle for the starting small four. You weren’t even mentioned as a possibility there at at media day. So yeah, it should definitely be something that you take personally because like it’s it’s not anymore like last year you lost your position to a rookie that just was more aggressive and things like that. Then now then to double down on that the off seasonason right after that they bring in somebody who was drafted one spot below you and does a lot of the same things you do. That should be your role. Now you know Pee Will is what it is. We know he’s not the most aggressive player out there, but even then, let’s let’s flip that and then look at coming off the bench. Like Pete Will isn’t guaranteed minutes off the bench. I understand why people think that, right? But like Trey Jones is your backup. If Kevin Herder doesn’t win the starting role, you already know he’s going to definitely be in the rotation. Zack Collins is definitely going to be in the rotation. He was one of Billy, it was Billy Don’s favorite backup big towards the end of last year. And I was definitely going to be in the rotation. That’s nine guys right there in a projected 10 10 player lineup. And you got to figure it out. You’re you’re competing with the Dalen Terries, the Julian Phillips, the Noah Singays of the world, and you should be you should be right there in that starting small forward battle, right? So, I mean, people has to look at it that way. Hopefully, he does. Like, I I I just want people to contribute, but I’m I’m past the point of expecting that from PE, if that makes sense. You got to go out and show and prove, and we’ll see. Yeah. I And I’m so much of a Bulls fan. I I like to look at the players and what motivates them. I look at Patrick Williams like what motivates this guy? Like a guy went and took your spot last season? A guy a young rookie Yeah. took your spot. What motivates you, bro? Um is it the criticism from us? Um is it the is it money? What is it, Patrick Williams? Cuz we need to touch that certain thing that can put you over the edge, bro. Because with this with his attitude and the the way he goes about basketball, it’s not aggressive. He need like aggression. And some people are born with it. Some people will never have it. I think we got to come to terms terms with that. But it’s a shame with a guy with his build. Like I don’t want to say it’s a waste of build, but it’s underachieving to me. It’s just underachieving for Patrick Williams. I hope the best for the kid. I think he’s still a great kid. he’ll get a chance to work for his playing time. I think he’ll get a great chance. The money, the 18 million per year is just that just guarantees that that he’s going to get a chance. So, I hope the best for the kid, bro. Yeah. I mean, I hope the best for him, too. I really do. I hope I hope that he’s able to get it together. I hope that he’s able to play the way that we know he’s capable of playing because if he does that consistently, like there’s always going to be a role for somebody like Pee Will. Pee Will is somebody who can just go out there and play the game of basketball and play it well. That’s all he needs to do, right? And and at this point, it’s just about being a role player. And if anything comes after that, I’ve said this before, Dub, is I could completely see um PeeWee Will being one of those guys that we look at and say, um, hey, PE will like PW’s quietly been a role player on X team and he’s actually played pretty solidly for them over the last couple of years. Like I could see that being what happens with him, but you know, we’ll see what the future holds. If anything more than that, so be it. But uh real quick on this one and we’ll and we’ll continue this um into the next segment as well. We know what that’s going on with the starting small forward role right now. Who’s your guy that you think’s coming away with that? Okay. Um the Bulls and media day, they talked all about defense and physicality and it was one guy that they pumped up all throughout the media sessions through the different players and Josh Giddy and Kobe White. They all had glowing things to say about Isaac Aoro. Yep. I know that everybody’s talking about this competition and and rightfully so because I think they all bring different things to the table if they in the starting lineup like Kevin Herder, you know, you got you yourself a shooter. I think he a little wishy-washy myself. He’s on and off to me. And then you got Patrick Williams who I think who had a long shot just because we just we think it’s something in there. It’s a little it might be in there, but we gauged oursel. I think it’s obvious that Isaac Aoro was brought in to be the uh starter for the Chicago Bulls. You want to put the guy against against the best team scorer, the wing scorer um to start the game. I think he is that guy. The Bulls were 29th in defense. Adding a guy in um like Isaac Aoro could change that rather quickly and he can motivate the guys. Remember the theme for this season is physicality and defense. I think it’s going to Isaac Auroro. All right, we gonna continue that conversation coming out of this break because I I want to continue to pick your brain on on that pick of it being Isaac Auroru and tell you if I agree or disagree with you there. But first, we do got to get into a message from FanDuel and my computer is moving slow. There you go. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. So, you got you you picked Isaac Okoro to come out of it with the starting small forward role. And let me ask you this. So, the Bulls have been missing some things in the starting lineup for a while. Toughness is one of those things. A lock down defender is one of those things. Um, do you see him as a potential lock down defender or is it just one of those tough physical defenders? I see him as as I don’t know if you would accept this answer. This still is a young player to me. He’s going into his sixth season alif fifth or sixth season along with Patrick Williams. I think he has the possibility to be a lock down defender. He’s been getting better every single season. I think last season was his best defend um best season as a defender. I think he he can be a lock down defender for sure. Okay. All right. I mean, and I think that’s the if that’s the vision that Billy Donovan sees for him as well, it makes a lot of sense to have him in the starting lineup, right? Because you need somebody who can go out there and get a stop when it matters. the thing that the Bulls have been missing, you know, and you we had it a little bit with Isaac, not Isaac, with Alice Caruso, but unfortunately Alice Caruso could not stay healthy either, and he’s and he’s not here, even though he was a great for the identity of the Bulls, but you you’re missing that guy that you can say, “Hey, go out there, whether you can stop Donovan Mitchell or not. Go out there and disrupt him. I don’t want nothing to come easy for Donovan Mitchell for the next three possessions. You were missing a guy like that.” uh if you if you can view Auroro as turning into that guy, then it makes sense for him to be in that starting lineup for you because that’s something that you’re missing in that starting lineup that you do not currently have. So, um you know, we’ll see if if he can be that consistently for for for the Bulls this year. I think the world of him uh you know, regardless of how you view him as a lock down or not, defender or whatever you you view there, there is an there’s a huge opportunity. And I and I I said this before and you can tell me how you feel about this dub. I compared it to Keith Bogen’s. Not because I think he I think he’s a better player than Keith Bogen’s, but Bogan’s role in that starting lineup next to D Rose was to defend and hit the open shots that D Rose got you. I think Akuru’s role is going to be a lot similar to that while also attack the paint when we’re in transition. And I think he can do all those things admirably well. What do you think? Absolutely. Uh especially since he’s been improving his offense. Uh especially last year. I think he shot 37% from the corners. he’s really excelled from the corners especially last season. Uh his role would would be definitely that what you just stated um run in an open floor even though I kind of have a question uh because the AK and Billy Donovan they were preaching that they wanted guys that can play defensively and be dynamic on offense. When I look at Isaac Aoro I don’t look at a guy that can be dynamic on offense even though he’s he’s improving. I seen him trying to get to the bucket. He’s it it’s it’s not there yet, but he’s actually trying. Uh but it’s okay because the role that he can play with the Chicago Bulls is something that we have not had in the starting lineup for a long time since a guy like Keith Bogus. That’s a good name to bring up as well. uh his role can be simply that and that’s a very important role because you can look at all the stars we have like Kate Cunningham and guys in that in that ilk put a guy out there like Isaac Aoro and you can um put less attention in your game plan on K Cunningham uh you can rely on this guy not to stop him but to make him work and and I think a guy like Isaac Aoro can make any make most offensive elite offensive of players in the Eastern Conference work for what they want to get. Um, I think you’re absolutely right about what he can bring to the starting lineup. Isaac Aoro can. Okay. All right. Yeah. And and the more and more like so I went into this season looking at Aoru and Herder and Iodumu as being the potential starting threes, right? That was before media day and all that. And as you know, Billy Donovan talked and you know, we we know how much he does trust I sumo. can see IO because he brings that mix of off defense and I can see him coming off the bench in an important role mainly because IO can do it do any of it right like if you need somebody who can bring bring a little bit more offense in transition IO can do that if you need somebody who can go out there and play really tough defense IO can do that so I think IO is going to be that Swiss Army knife off the bench for you for sure but then you also have to figure out the rest of it what’s up so you see I’m doing something what’s up as your sister to help I’ll come up there when I’m done with this. Um, but um, so like you could see how how the depth’s going. Now, that’s the next thing that I want to ask you, Dub, is that Billy Donovan’s talked a lot this this offseason, like between the the him being out there media day, last two days after practice, he’s put on almost 20 minute uh, sessions with the media each of the last two days after practice. and depth, physicality, defense has continued to be things that he’s brought up here. How do you feel about the Bulls depth going into this season? We talked about how you got you got five guys, Jaylen Smith, Julian Phillips, Dalen Terry, Patrick Williams, Noah Essen competing over the 10th spot. Like this is the I can’t remember the last time it felt like we legitimately had 10 players that I kind of want to see all of them for different ways play for this team. How do you feel about the Bulls depth coming into this season? Yeah, Billy Donovan uh talked about just that. He talked about a long bench. Uh meaning they want to use a lot of players. They want to they want to get up and down the floor. They want to actually get more possessions than they got last season, which they really had a a really high output when it comes to possessions, especially at the end of the season when they went 15 and five. They kind of uh show showed the way that they really want to play basketball. Kind of like a Indiana Pacers 2.0. They they actually want to play faster than the Indiana. Uh the way Billy Donovan speaking, uh I think the depth that we have on this on this team is exactly what they said they should be. Young, experienced, can do multiple things offensively. Uh except for Kevin Herder. Defensive minded. Uh he tries. I mean, he gives effort defensively, right? Like the metrics for him last year actually pretty good as a defender last year. Yeah. Uh yeah. Um, I think we have a underrated bench to tell you the truth. Uh, I I don’t think we’re world beaters or anything like that, but for the specific type of offense that Billy Donovan wants to run, which is a up and down. We want as much possessions as possible, uh, they want to the uptick in steals. Um, that doesn’t mean gambling and and and stuff like that like Billy Donovan was talking about, but be in the right position. Um, gather them extra possessions because that’s what it’s all about. I think we got to it can be better, drip, it could be better, but I think we got a good bench if they want to go as deep as they want. You could go all the way to Jaylen Smith, uh, Zack Collins. You forget about Trey Jones is still on the bench. You got Dan Terry, Julian Phillips, you know, you who knows if Yuki Kamar can ever get get up to the big leagues and get actually get some rotational minutes. We got a long bench, bro. And they got some experience and they can play as well. So, I think the bench is good. Yeah, I think I I I think the bench is going to be solid in the sense that we’re going to be able to keep up the pace and that’s been something special. Billy Donovan’s talked about using the pace to their advantage and and you know keeping up the conditioning and legitimately we can keep up the pace. Like I know that Trey Jones isn’t Josh Giddy, right? But he does a lot of the same things. Really good passer, low turnovers. Uh you know Josh Giddy actually has pretty high turnovers but low turnovers. He can stretch the ball. He can hit an open three, right? And you look at that IO, one of our best passers in transition. You then you then throw out even if Kevin Hurder does, you know, end up coming off the bench, you have your shooter in that. you got Zack Collins as your solid big like the the bench could have its own identity and it be in line with the same thing that we’re trying to bring for the starters. So, you know, we’ll see. And it it finally is starting to feel I think Dove the way to word it is that it feels like the Bulls have a play style and one that actually makes sense to the NBA now and we just got to see how successful they’re going to be playing it. You absolutely right. The Bulls have moved into modern basketball. Could it be? I ain’t want to move too fast. Wait, but right now we’re talking about the theory of it, right? Like, of course, we got to wait and see how successful they are in running it and stuff like that. But like, it just seems like like for example, last season, we started off with the 20 second shot clock in training camp. We kept up the pace. This year, Billy Donovan did the thing where, you know, he kept one rotation out there. I mean, one unit out there and then rotated the other unit and the other unit, the the original, they just kept getting exhausted. Just kept throwing waves of players at them. Like, they’re trying to get to the place of getting that physicality. And if they can do it, if they can become a more physical team, and it’s going to have to be team defense, if they can all buy in to what they need to do defensively, because we don’t have a lot of one-on-one individual defenders. If you can buy into team defense and add that to what you already were able to do offensively last year, it could be cooking with something, Dub. Could be. And it it could be cooking some and and especially with this year with all the injuries we have in the Eastern Conference. We could you you know it could happen. Nobody knows. They haven’t played they haven’t bounced one dribble on the basketball court yet in in preseason. We will see. Um you are absolutely right. Uh they do have the tools to get the job done. Let’s just see if they all put it together. Man, it’s up to those guys how much they want to how much they want it. And um um how how together are they? Cuz that seems like they I like the camaraderie of the teams. Yeah, they all seem to like each other and enjoy each other, which I know that that sounds like something that is is like one of those fluff things, but that could legitimately help a team find its identity. So, we’ll see if that’s the Bulls this year, man. But we’re going to get into the last topic for today. We’re going to discuss Noah Essenay. I want to talk about talk about and ask the question, can we talked about that 10th man. Can Noah sneak into that spot? But first, we got to get a message from Pelaton. Noah Essen, this is what everybody’s talking about, man. Um, Billy in media day immediately admittedly sounded really excited about Noah, but then he kind of tempered the expectations a little bit as did AK. This is the youngest player in the NBA, Dub. And I do think they’re going to bring him along slowly. There’s been a lot of talk about having a similar plan to modest last year. It may be a little bit on the slower end than that too because even Modest in that first month was getting like 5.7 minutes and things like that. I do think we’re going to see a stretch of Noah in the G-League maybe. Um, but this is a guy who played professionally for for two and a half years, bro. Even at him being almost 19 years old, he’s played professionally against grown men. He stayed in Chicago instead of going to Euro Basket. He get his body ready for NBA basketball. Stayed working with the player development department. Billy Donovan has talked about how he shares some similar mindset things. Tomas Buzzel is on the court. He’s not as ongo uh as uh outgoing off the court, but on the court, you know, he has reportedly some of similar mindset things there. Can Noah Essen Gay sneak into the rotation this year? Yeah. Um with authority. Um, okay. I’m going to be a little critical with uh Billy Donovan’s uh logic uh with these young players, especially with Montis Boozelis. Uh I’m I’m I run with the logic if you let the kids just get down out on the floor and learn with experience. His is you have to earn your minutes to get on the floor. That I see that’s his kind of logic that he likes to go out. Um, I don’t want to say what Billy Donovan calls Montes Buzzalees, but I think that Montes Buellis was the best rookie from last year’s class. That’s just my opinion. Um, I want to say he should not look at Noah Essen Gay and think it’s the same situation as Montis Buzzelis’s uh situation from last year just for the things that you just stated. This kid has played against grown men uh overseas in the professional league. Now, it’s not as good as the NBA. Now, nothing is good. Very different level of competition for you. Very different level competition, but you learn how to play as a pro. Uh you got responsibilities as a pro, and some of that stuff can only be counted as a positive. Now, when we talk about the measurables about this kid, it’s just unbelievable. Some of his great qualities. He’s seven 71 wingspan. He’s got a standing, what is it? 11 ft tall reach. I just over exaggerated. 11 I think something like it’s it’s it’s a long stand to reach like the kid can play. He can People say he he can’t he has trouble shooting a ball. Look at the form. He can he’s going to be able to shoot the ball if you just look at his form. He can get to the basket. Uh and his first best his best quality overall is defense with that length. That’s what’s going to get you court on the court more than anything else. Look at Dumu that rookie year. He wasn’t offensive offensively advanced in that first rookie year. It was more like fast break and open jump shots for IO Dumu. But what got him on the floor and got the trust of Billy Donovan was his defensive pressure and um and running up the floor. I just think that Noah Esay sooner than later I don’t think it’s going to take long drip he’s going to be in this rotation. I agree with you. I I mean, you look at the things that I that and and Noah talked about this when he was interviewed after day one of practice. He was asked what Billy Donathan wants of him and he basically said uh energy on both sides of the ball and defense, right? And that when you simplify stuff like that for a rookie, to me it increases what what the productivity they can give you because like if Noah is engaged defensively and as far as offensively, yeah, shots going to come along and like you said, good form on the shot, but like with his length and ability that he has to run the floor, it’s going to be lobbs there from Josh Giddy and Kobe White all day long. Protect the rim, which is another thing he’s really good at. And I don’t know if you got a chance to look at this, Dub, but like the dude averaged almost four free throws a game. like he gets to the and that’s something the Bulls need help on is getting to the free throw line, attacking the rim. So, I could see where his skill set overlaps. It really I think everybody’s just waiting to see how well do you adapt to the NBA part of the game. If you adapt to the NBA physicality, I could see the sky’s is the limit for no asking. So, whenever that clicks form, it’s going to be big, man. That’s gonna be big. And I ask you a question. How much stock do you put into summer league physicality? Great question. Um, I mean the here’s the thing and I and I’ll use this as a perfect example. The game that Noah SN got dunked on, which everybody used the meme crazy face, all that type of stuff. People forget he put up 21 points on them. He did not like he did not back down at that moment. He didn’t shy away. If anything, he used that as saying, “All right, bet. Let’s go out here. I’m about to cook you.” He cooked after that. Right. Yes. So I I you know, from what I’ve seen from what he did in summer league, like he doesn’t back down from physicality. So, you know, it’s still a different it’s it’s not quite NBA, you know, somewhere in between NBA and G-League uh competition there, but I I I mean, he’s still playing against people who are all competing for roster spots. So, I put a little bit into it. To me, this opportunity that he’s going to have now, you know, we know Kobe’s not playing in preseason, at least not the first couple preseason games with uh Pat twisting his ankle, he might not play. I think they’re going to give him a little bit of run in this preseason. I think that that that’s going to be the tr here’s the thing. I I we forgot about this. He when he he his his uh his international team played against the Portland Trailblazers last year. I know the Trailblazers weren’t great. He put up 21 points against the Blazers, an NBA team. Absolutely. So, it Oh, that’s a great answer. And and this is why I said that cuz we seen a little bit about a little bit of adjustment from Noah Essen Gay in summer league. That first game he had to adjust to he kind of got pushed around in that first game of summer league. Uh, and what did he do? The the games after that, he adjusted to the the physicality and uh the defense of the of the I’m I don’t want to say the NBA, the summer league NBA tournament. Mhm. And from then on, once he made his adjustment, he he was just full blast off and it was nothing. He looked like a veteran. He looked like a a 5-year veteran of summer league, but he looked like he got used to it. It wasn’t a problem. So, I do not have I know it will be an adjustment period for the kid cuz he is like 190 lbs soaking wet cuz he definitely got to start eating his hamburgers and going to Chili’s get them them two for 19.99. Especially because his long-term position looks like it’s going to be four maybe some small ball five if you can even call it small ball five. You got a almost eight foot standing reach. I don’t know if you can call it small ball five but uh yeah. Yeah. I mean he definitely does. I think I think he’s going to have to between and he’s going to go through year one. It’s hard to put on weight, whatever, but between this off season and next, I need to see no SN at about 210. 210? Yeah. Okay. He he hit about 200 204 right now. So, I think that’s a that’s an achievable goal for No. I think he knows that these young players, they got all the resources in the world and they know what they have to do to get better and to progress in their career. And I like this kid. I like what he made of. He talks like he he’s very reserved guy. He talks uh he thinks about what he says before he says it. Not like me. I’m See, y’all know me. But Noah, it’s going to be all right. And sooner than later, he’s going to be a impact player in this life. Yeah. And we shall see. We shall see. Any last thoughts, Doug, before we get up out of here, brother? Oh, man. I want to appreciate you for bringing me on this platform, bro. I really appreciate it, big dog. Oh, bro. Thank you, man. 1. Will be competitive within the bench fighting for consistent minutes. Currently the only locks look to be 1. Giddey 2. Coby. 3. Okoro 4. Buzelis 5. Vuc 6. Ayo 7. Huerter. 8. Jones 9. Collins.

Still have Pwill, D Terry, Essengue, J smith & J Phillips fighting for that 10th man spot

  2. I think the timing of this couldn't have come any better! Our coach just loves to start him just cause.. now this forces him to use other players more and slowly phase him out of the lineup cause he's gotten to many chances and so little to show for it.

  3. If you like Jimmy Butler, you like Patrick Williams and you hate Billy Donovan. You hate Giddy and you love Dalen. You love Phillips and Coby. You think the world of Matas. You wonder why Giddy and Billy got the pink slip in OKC, but they are somehow building blocks. If you are going to play the great white hope, it’s Matas, you big dummy! You value offense, but fail to see the importance of a two way player, or worse: you think it’s good business to over work and under pay. Restricting development to devalue paying players with elite potential. How many guards did they put in front of Ayo and Dalen?

  4. Love seeing CDub on here. And as for Pwill..I think he’s gonna lose his spot in the rotation once again. I’m sorry but CDub is absolutely correct. Patrick Williams has underachieved so far in his entire nba career. He’s always too shy or timid to help his teammates win consistently. And he’s become more injury prone lately. So in my opinion, he’s not someone that the bulls should depend on or put too much faith, stock into. Conclusion: Keep Pwill on the bench even after he recovers from injury, and make him work hard to get back in the rotation again. The bulls need killers and dogs on this team, not mfs that like to tuck their tails, run and hide type shit!!🤦‍♂️🤬😤 Apologies for the rant, the bulls are called the Chicago Bulls for a reason though!! I’ll leave it at that..
