CANUCKS SET OPENING NIGHT ROSTER

Hello Kucks fans from Frankfurt, Germany. I’m staying here with my dear friend Ya and her husband Dominic and their two kids as I have an overnight layover on my way home to Vancouver. Want to react to the news of the day. The Vancouver Conucks have set their 23man roster for the opening night of the season. I think the um they had to set these rosters by Monday, but they did it so two days early with a couple of of of transactions today, namely Tom Valander and Victor Mancini being sent down to Abbottzford. So, let’s break this down. The 23man roster for opening night and remember they can only dress 20 as I outlined in my vlog from yesterday. 12 forwards, six defenseman, two goalies. So, that’s 20. So that means the Conucks will be carrying three extra players and it’ll be two extra forwards and one extra defenseman. So let’s start off with the the goalenders. Easy Thatcher Demco, Kevin Lanin. Enough said. On defense, there are seven defenseman on the roster. The top four of Hughes and Heronic with Marcus Person and Tyler Meyers. And then I anticipate the third pairing to be Derek Forbert with DPD Elias Patterson. And the seventh defenseman is Pierre Olivier Joseph. Uh yes, Pio uh Pio Joseph will be the number seven defenseman as both Mancini and Valander were sent down to Abbottzford. Now when you look at this defense core, we’re always talking about this battle between the three young guys, DPD, Valander, and Mancini. DPD had the leg up because of his strong showing last season. Mancini was good, but DPD was better. And Valander, no rush to bring them in the league, as I’ve talked about many times on this channel. Also, Mancini and Valander did not they’re waiver exempt. They did not require waiverss to be sent down to Abbottzford. So, that makes it an easy decision, whereas a guy like Pio Joseph um indeed would have to clear waiverss and he probably would get picked up to be honest with you as a death defenseman, death defenseman for another team. And then DPD, he is also waiver exempt, but he is just simply too good to send down to Abster. Remember, they didn’t even send him down to Abster for the Calder Cup. They ended up winning the CER cup, so maybe they didn’t need him, but they didn’t even send DPD down last year. So once again, seven for seven defenseman, Hughes Heronic, Marcus Person, Tyler Myers, Derek Forward, Elias Person, and Pierre Olivier Joseph Mancini and Vander sent down today. Then you go to the forwards. There’s actually 15 forwards, but Neil’s Hoglander was put on injured reserve. And as I explained to you yesterday, um it’s if it’s short-term injury, regular IR, it means you’re out for at least a week, and it means that you’re you get the roster spot, but his cap his cap hit of 3 million still counts against the cap. If you go to LTIR, long-term injury reserve, that means out for at least 10 games, at least 24 days, so basically a month. And then not only do you get the roster spot, but you also get cap relief. It’s not like you you get relief of his salary. You’re allowed to go over the salary cap by the amount of his salary, which is the exact same thing as if you take off his salary. So, right now, Neil Hoglander and his $3 million cap hit on the books because he’s on regular IR. Um, but they do free up a roster spot and then if it goes past 24 days, which is we know it’s going to because they said 8 to 10 weeks, then they’ll move them to LTI and then that’s when they get uh the cap relief as well. So Neil Hoglander not in these 14 forwards. It’s the guys that we expected. It is Person De Brusk and Besser. It is Kane. It is Heedle. It is Garland. It is Bluger. It is um Kefir Sherwood, Drew O’ Conor, Jonathan Leeraki, Braden Coots, Atu Ratu, Lenus Carlson, and Arch Deep Bane. So, those are the 14. I think some surprises here um or at least pleasant surprises. Maybe they’re not surprises, but pleasant um I guess occurrence or happening development. Development is the word I was looking for. Both Braden Coots and Jonathan Leer Macki starting this season on the roster. Leer Maki has been one of the best Kucks forwards throughout the preseason and Braden Coots has done nothing to suggest he’s not ready for at least a nine-game stint here in Vancouver and then they got to make a decision to send him back to Seattle because he can’t do Abbottzford this year. He’s too young or keep him up with the big club. Um, and what’s really interesting about that is both Coots and Ler Macki are waiver exempt just like DPD, but the Canucks have decided to keep them on the big club. What they did do is is they sent down guys that weren’t waver exempt but they got through waiverss. Fatilly Kratzov, Max Sassin, and Neil Zaman. So when you go to the bottom lineup, Lenus Carlson and Archie Baines, those two guys are not waver exempt. So maybe the Canucks um did not want to risk losing either of those guys in waiverss. Carlson had a good season with Abbottzford and an outstanding playoff. Archite Baines, I I think there’s a there’s potential there. There’s a lot of hope there. haven’t seen a lot yet, but I think the Kucks management and coaching staff still really believe in Bane. So again, um it’s Koots and Leer Macki. It’s kind of opposite the D on D. You only had DPD whose waiver exam stay up, but they sent Valander Mancini down. So they kind of took advantage of waiverss. Uh when it comes to the forwards, they really didn’t. They kept coots and lermaki up and then they sent down um forwards that had to go through waiverss like I said in Max Sassin in Vatilic Kratzov and in in Neil Zman. So again Pety de Brusk and Besser Hedo Garland Kain Okconor Bluger Sherwood Coots Leer Maki Carlson Baines and Ratu. So when it comes to as mentioned P Joseph likely going to be the extra defenseman who will be the extra two forwards on Thursday night when the Canucks open up against Calgary the way they’re trending the way they played the last preseason game and the way they’ve been practicing it could be Bane sorry it could be Ratu and Carlson on the outside looking in. We knew that um in the last preseason game the Kucks lined up with the top line of Pey with Besser and De Bruss and then a second line of Hedo with Garland and Baines. Then a third line with Kane with the two youngsters of Ken Leaki and the fourth line of Bluker Sherwood and Okconor. So maybe if that’s the way they go then that means Ratu and and Carlson are sitting out. I don’t see Ratu getting in because if they’re keeping Coots up they’re going to play them. So Kuds and Blue Girl will be your your your third and fourth line centers. And then when it comes to Lenus Carlson, I don’t see him bumping out a guy like Okconor or Sherwood just yet or even Baines. So I expect on Thursday night that our extras will be Pio Joseph, will be Aturuatu and will be Lenus Carlson. So Conucks fans, let me know what you think. I know I just vlogged about this yesterday and I talked about different combinations and permutations but now we see what the Canucks have done in sending down guys like actually Topppilo another one. So they sent down to in the last few days they sent down goenderender Toipil they sent down defenseman Valander and Mancini and they sent down forwards Sassin Kratzov and Neil Zaman. So they basically got the roster and then so those six guys and then Neils Hoglander on injury reserve that’s seven guys not in the lineup plus the 23 and that’s the 30 that they kind of the connects kind of um were cut down to by midweek last week. So let me know I know this kind of like a repeat of yesterday’s vlog but now it’s certain. Let me know your thoughts. Are you surprised? Are you concerned? Um in particular are you fine with the decision to send Mancini and Vander down? I am because you can, you know, there’s going to be injuries. Um, you know, there’s going to be u opportunities for guys to to to get called up and then with you really got to take advantage of those waiver eligible those waiver exempt players. So I’m talking about Mancini, Valander, DPD who’s starting the team with the team um uh starting the season with the team Braden Coots and Jonathan Leer Macki. So those are five guys that are indeed waiver exempt. So, let’s track how much they are used throughout the regular season.
