Top start, here is the link to the list. https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board
I took that data and did some clean up and analysis, the most subjective of which was adding a numeric value to the FV rankings. I give some detail on that below. But my summary confirmed what I expected: worst farm system:
The bars are the count of prospects for each team but is sorted by the orange line which is the numeric value of the prospects. Still thinking about the smartest way to value the relative FV rankings, but I came up with:
This makes the 65 FV roughly 3.5x more valuable than the generic 40 FV player. Also implies 65 FV just 17% more valuable than the 60 FV. Probably could use more thought and tweaking but a starting point.
Some more detailed views of the teams and scores:
Finally, the impact of the trade deals. We were already low but pushed us to the bottom:

For starters, this is awesome.
Second, fuck.
I’m not worried. Farm gets rebuilt every year. Next year by the trade deadline preller is gonna do the same crazy shit and we’re all gonna praise him
No hate to this post, fangraphs, or any takes made in comments. I went to the first page which is top 50 prospects. We had one show up (Salas at #49). But 3 others that began in our system (Leo, Susana, and Snelling). Even though were at the bottom its this continued success of prospects who started here that gains AJ, and our system, such respect regardless of prospect rankings. Also we trade so many “established” prospects and our draft philosphy skews towards younger talent that we rank unfavorably based on it. Not surprised or concerned by this at all is my takeaway. Cool post and cool info to see for sure though.
I like FanGraphs but their prospect rating system is usually eh.
One thing that gets lost in all of this is that we end up giving a lot of playing time to a lot of bad players in the first four months of the season because we don’t have anyone else. Do we win the West or at least get the first Wild Card spot if we don’t give so many starts to Maldonado, Heyward, and Wade? Preller will probably be able to whip something together at the deadline but how many bad starts from Sears are we going to have to sit through before then?
One side note I heard on a FG podcast after the trades was that clearing out the system gives more playing time to lesser known players. Not that they all shine but sometimes a few do.
Didn’t we win the 2025 first time Dominican summer league championship. There’s more on the way although it may take a little time .
Every 2 years our farm gets rebuilt. AJ put all the chips on the table this year to stay competitive in the years to come. Trust the process and EFF THEM KIDS.
prospect rankings don’t mean SH1T. I glad the padres are the first to know this and are trading them for real talent. our best player(mason miller) wasnt top 100 when he was called up, not even top 3 in the As
So what. They’ll draft some new guys. I’m glad they’ve been going for it for 5 years. Much better than when they traded all our stars for prospects
