🔴LIVE 🔴New York Mets VS Chicago Cubs/September 24/ Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

Baseball on tap. It’s the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about set to go. And today’s starter, Mike Soka. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Francisco Lindor, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch 640. Next offering is in for a strike. And the slider just misses. [Music] And here’s a 3-2. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Go a breaking ball in that 3-2 count. Kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Here’s Juan Stoodto. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Lindor gets his lead at first with nobody out. And that’s in there at the knees. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Fights it off. He’ll see another in the dirt. Ruer at first with no outs here. Zodto swinging a drive deep right field. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases. Headed for the plate. He scores and they have the lead. Well, they strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s Pete Alonzo. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. No outs. Runner on second. [Music] [Applause] a little out front there as he swings through it. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. This one in the air center field. Cro Armstrong under it and makes the grab. Runner tags it second. He makes it to third. Good base running to move up with only one out. Here’s a men’s lineup now. And one guy who’s been great for them, Brandon NMO. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Brandon NMO in the box now. No balls in a strike. And there’s a foul ball. Inside. Going to count one and two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. He goes down looking. You got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Stepping in Mark Vientos. That one in there across the letters. He’s a master at hitting fast balls. You need to be careful with location if you’re going to throw them. Two outs. And that one upstairs. Ball one. And that’s downstairs. And it’s two and one. Runner at third. Two away. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And he deals. Still two and two after the foul ball. Caught him looking for the K. So, one run on one hit, no errors, and a runner left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Mets one and the Cubs coming up. Back here at the friendly confines, our starting pitcher in this one, David Peterson. How about a scouting report on him? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Marte pulls that one down. One down. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Pete Crow Armstrong. And Boo, we’re talking about a guy who has great wheels and then puts them to good use. He’s the team leader in stolen bases and runs scored. Man, using his speed to just get into scoring position and then just flying home when the guys behind him put the ball in play. I absolutely love watching him do it because he causes havoc on the base paths. in half. Baddock with one down takes the strike. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Next pitch misses. Now one and two. One out. Base is empty. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That misses the zone and the count’s full. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Two down, base is empty. Seiya Suzuki the next cup to hit and first offering is fouled off and ball one. So now one and two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And that keeps the inning going. Batting fourth, catcher. Here’s the catcher, Carson Kelly. Carson right through there for a strike. Step off throw to first and he’s out and they got him. That ends the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of the second and stepping in for New York, Brett Batty. Soka back to work. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. Starling Marte up to hit that one outside and it’s one and0. [Music] And a foul ball of the quarter for a strike and a count. One and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one missed. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll eat at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Man, I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting the call he probably should have gotten. He didn’t let it affect his focus and he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging. That one fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. And that is downstairs. And the count is one and one. Foul ball. Two outs. Base is empty. Battling here as he fouls it away. also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Fouls it off. Still one and two and downstairs. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with another one. That’s five straight strikeouts. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Mets one and the Cubs nothing. Back here at Wrigley Field, we head to the bottom of the second. So now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole, Carson Kelly. Fast ball for a strike. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. Ball one there. One strike. Rip towards third. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting fifth. Carlos Santana. So now the DH spot. Carlos Santana. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Highf fly ball out towards left field. Can’t get to it as it drops into the corner. He’s in at second with a one out double. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. [Applause] One out. Runner at second. Swanson digs in now. Hit hard on the ground to short. Jump throw on the money. Nice play. Come on now. Fatty seven first baseman Justin Turner. Man, Chris, a jump throw like that is certainly worthy of the Stackcast treatment. Let’s see what the numbers have to say about it. Yeah, these are some favorable numbers, Boo. This is the type of play that showcases his arm strength. I mean, he made it look easy, but I promise you that’s not a throw every shortstop can make, especially with that much behind it. Here’s Turner now. outside with a breaking ball. Chicago the 10 and that misses off the outside edge. That one hit to right. Bounces over the wall in foul ground and it’s an automatic double as a run scores. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Shaw the next to hit. That one to first. Alonso. He’ll do it himself and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. They get a run on two hits, no errors, and a man left. We head on now to the top of the third. All tied 1-1 on the north side of Chicago. John Shami and Chris Singleton. Top half of the third inning. Here’s the catcher for the Mets. Francisco Alvarez. Swings through that one for strike one. Alvarez, 23 years old. and he was born in Venezuela. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. He made him pay for that one. His 11th of the year and they grabbed the lead. It’s 2-1. Two pitches, two swings. That one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way. And it paid off for him in a big way. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Here’s Francisco Lindor. Walked his first time and that finds the mark on the outside corner. That’s strike one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered. He’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Pat brings it in. And there’s one down. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Next offering is fouled back. One down, base is empty. That one not close now. Two balls in a strike. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Two-2 up the middle. Jump throw and it beats him. What a play. Two outs. Base is empty. Pete Alonzo up now for the Mets. fly to center his first time. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. And a popup right side foul territory. Under it is Justin Turner to make the catch and that’ll do it. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. And this is now a 2-1 ball game as we go to the last of the third. So up now for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong. Curve ball drops in for a strike. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. NMO makes a nice running catch. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be if he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner. That’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. her takes low. Second trip to the plate in this one. And that misses and a count two and one. Swinging a foul out of play. Got him swinging. Went back to the sinker and it was successful. He had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. H batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Swinging a liner foul off to the right and one and two. his understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fastball. I just don’t know how you take that. Next offering misses down and away. Swing and a miss and he got him. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. They’re down two to one. out of the fourth. Here’s Brandon NMO. Brandon NMO. [Music] Highfly ball out to center field. Crow Armstrong should have it and puts the squeeze on that one and a quick out number one. Now batting the designated hitter, Mark Ventos. Mark Vientos up now for the Mets. He was a strikeout victim his first time. There’s a strike. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Ca strikes him out for the second time today. Oh, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Now, the third baseman, Brett Batty, out to short, zips it across, out number three. So, they go quietly there. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Mets two and the Cubs one. And we’re back. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Seya Suzuki. [Music] Win. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. Up the middle, McNeel. and he beats it. He’s saved. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Carson Kelly. Grounded out his first time. And that’s through there for a strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. Snap throw to first. Suzuki back in on a dive. comes up empty. That’s strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Foul ball still 0 and two. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That’s off the mark and it’s one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart but look for something down in the zone but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. And now it’s going to be Carlos Santana one for one with a double and a run scored. And that one fouled off. [Applause] And now it’s even up. [Applause] Headed towards the corner. Sodto really on his horse for it. Tries to make the play, but it’s fouled. Suzuki over at first with one away. Foul ball still a one and two count [Applause] to short could be two. He flips it to second in time over to Alonzo for the inning ending double play. They made it look easy but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam here at Wrigley Field. Ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the left fielder, Starling Marte. Soka back to work. And that’s downstairs and outside. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Not close with that one. And that’s ball two. And a swing and a miss. Make it seven strikeouts for him. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Jeff McNeel stands in. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one’s in there and it’s 0 and one. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Next pitch is outside. Outside. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Almost a coin flip for the umpire in that call. But most umpires just don’t want to give pitchers a break up in the zone like that. Now the catcher up to hit. Francisco Alvarez. He’s already homerred in this game. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Drew Pomearatz up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Horton the right-hander loosening up as well. Come on. Foul ball there. The O2 got him. That’s his eighth strike out of the game. Back to the top of the Mets order. Now it’s the shortstop. Francisco Lindor. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. swing and that’s ripped towards right center and a superb diving catch. Great diving catch to end the inning. That’ll fire up the dugout for sure. Time to go swing it. Back here at the friendly confines. And here comes Dansby Swanson. Swanson and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Now he breaks as bad as it’s put in play on the run. Throw to first and they get the out. Big play there to get the lead off man. Got to feel pretty good for the pitcher. Absolutely saw him off. Bat explodes and then he makes an easy play on it. Pretty satisfying if you’re out there on the ball. And it’ll bring up Justin Turner. Doubled in his first AB. That’s in there. One down. Base is empty. Fouled off left side. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. And up next for Chicago, Matt Shaw 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Right through there for a strike. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Next one misses. Now, one and two. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch in the dirt. And an excellent job keeping it right there. That’s outside. Counts full. Three and two on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo [Applause] and ball for two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. fought off foul. Runners at first and second with one gone. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out in the air left field down the line and a foul ball. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out at a slider. And there’s two gone. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. her in the box now. Takes strike one. Tying run in scoring position. Last half of inning number five. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Music] Two on, two outs and ball one. Ripped to right and a base hit. Runner around third. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 22. Well, there you go. the RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, two outs with runners on the corners in half up to who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and that is ball one. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. And a big swing and a miss. Action in the Mets bullpen. Brandon Sprro, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Holmes, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. [Music] swings through that one for strike two. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball, but the RBI single pushes across a run. Two- two game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Drew Pomear. He’s been so good against lefties. And now, Juan Sto, you know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is, I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. drilled out towards left center field. Half ranging back on it and that one’s gone into the bleachers. A shot to the opposite field and just like that they’re out front. It’s 3-2. He ambushed him right there, Siggy. Yeah, swinging on that first pitch and I think losing one over the fence is exactly what he had in mind as well. Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side, as a hitter, it’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. Insteps the polar bear. Peter Lonzo for two in this one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, these Mets putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Bounced up the middle. Her to first now one gone in the top of the sixth. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way. in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. So, now it’s the fourhole hitter, Brandon NMO. And a swing and a miss there. That one catches the corner for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two down, base is empty. Mark Vientos getting ready to hit. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Vientos 25 years old. He’s usually a third baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. And that one pulled foul. Little bit of a day off for him. Instead of being at the hot corner, he can just kind of put the batting gloves on, hold the bat as he sits on the bench waiting for his time to hit. Swings and misses. Tosses to first. Third out. The Mets do pick up a run on this solo blast. It’s now a 32 ball game. back after this on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the six. So up now for Chicago, Seiya Suzuki. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Brooksley, the left-hander up and throwing. Maniah also getting ready. And another ball. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats. And the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. And that one’s a little bit low. And it’s 3 and 0. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Here’s a three 0. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. And here is Carson Kelly. [Music] That one off the mark. Ball one with a tying run on at first here in the bottom of the sixth. Next offering upstairs and that misses as well. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Carlos Santana in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Next offering is in for a strike. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. Mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch in the air left field. Marte sizes this one up. Pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting hitter. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. David Peterson won’t go any further and he leaves with the lead after giving them some decent innings. We’ll be back with a new pitcher in a moment. So a young arm coming on now out of the pen. Brandon Sprro. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. Carlos Santana will hit next. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Throw to first. Suzuki back on a dive. One- run game. One out, one on. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. [Applause] That one misses. One and two to count. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Left field makes the grab. Two down. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. He’s grounded out a couple of times. First pitch just misses. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That ball’s carrying. Leaping and he makes the grab. Oh man, amazing catch to end the inning. As a former outfielder, I’m feeling proud right now. Saw the wall, didn’t get afraid, held on to the ball. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Taylor Rogers. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Well, one-run game. Here’s the third base, Brett Batty. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Action in the pen down there. Aaron Savali up and throwing. Assad getting loose as well. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball two. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Right through there for a strike. Swing and a highf fly ball. pretty well struck right field pulls it in on the warning track. Here’s Starling Mart. [Applause] Swang in a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance out of here. And that should quiet this home crowd. It’s 4-2. He sent the first pitch over the wall. Must have dinner reservations cuz he wasn’t wasting any time at the plate in that at bat. Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. One out, bases empty. And now Jeff McNeel. He is struck out and he is walked. [Applause] Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still able to fire over and the throw is late. They couldn’t overcome the misplay. Francisco Alvarez. And here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? pounding ball here. Rolls. Foul misses off the inside. One ball, one strike. Man at first, one away. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Now, batting shortstop, Francisco Lindor. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. And remember, he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. Here we go. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Half and there’s two away. Now batting right. Now the number two hitter, Juan Sto. He had a big swing back in the six. The solo shot that figures into this game in a pretty big way right now. Yeah, that was a big swing of the bat and he’s going to be looking for more. Trying to add on to this lead right here. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Two outs. That one in the dirt and the count is one and two. That’s a little bit low. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. [Music] McNeel on second. Alvarez on first with two down. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field heading for the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and they take a threerun lead. Well, he delivers in a huge spot right there. Well, he’s so dialed in. I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there. Very easy swing. Nice and relaxed. This is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Taylor Rogers will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Andrew Kitridge taking over on the mound. Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone, makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes. And here’s the first baseman, Pete Alonzo. 0 for three in this one. [Music] First pitch misses. Traffic on the bases with two already in to score here in the top half of inning number seven. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] And now two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Two on, two outs. Misses off the plate. And that’s ball three. back-to-back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Fouls one away and now three and two. And with two outs and the count full, the runners will be on the move. And they’re all loaded up. Oh, a great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. NMO can’t hold up. And that’s a strike. No matter swing and a ball lifted left field. Pat moving under it. And that’s the third out. Two runs in the inning, but they strand three midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Mets five and the Cubs two. Back here at Wrigley Field. And now the first baseman, Justin Turner. Justin Turner. That’s outside. Ball one. You know, these Cubs just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. We’ve seen a lot of soft contact from them, and it hasn’t been easy to barrel up the baseball in this one. But I’m interested to see if they can make any adjustments moving forward. just missed. One place to start in terms of turning the offense around is pitch selection. I think if they get a little more selective about what pitches they’re going after, we’ll start seeing better contact. Throws across the diamond and Turner is retired. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. So up next, Matt Shaw. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. That’s off the inside corner and a count even one and one. The Mets leading by three near the bottom of the seventh. Late on that fast ball. A one-two count. All he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Pete Crow Armstrong, the next Cub to hit. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Throw to first. Got him. Inning over on the strikeout. No runs, no hits, no errors. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Mets five and the Cubs two. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Cade Horton. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Now it’s the DH. Mark Vientos. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Crow Armstrong should have it. Brings it in. One up, one down. Now batting third base. Brett Batty up now for the Mets. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. Off the mark there, and that’s ball one. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Caleb Thebar, a lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Here we go. Inside corner. That’s a strike. And it’s one and one. [Applause] And there’s a ball. line drive to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoked, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more backspin. Now the left fielder, Starling Marte. He’s already homered here in this one. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. off the mark there. Now two and0 on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it and the Mets go down one two three and it remains 5-2. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Brooks really he’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid. So, they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Here’s Nico. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Edwin Diaz, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Just off the outside edge and it’s 2 and 0. That one to first and it goes just foul. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another swing and a miss for the strikeout. Snuck the fast ball by him. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. And next for the Cubs, Ian Hap. First offering misses badly for ball one. And a popup right side. Foul territory. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Couple of pitches and a quick out. Up next for the Cubs, right fielder. And up next for Chicago, Seya Suzuki. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Ahead 02 in the count. Sure, you’ve got four pitches you can work with, but throw something you can command and get this at bat over with as quickly as possible. That’s too low. Yeah, the count one and two. Chicago swings through it for the K up with it. Fires to first in time. So the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him and that’s that. Nothing across here this half through eight full gets the Mets five and the Cubs two on the north side of Chicago. John Shabi and Chris Singleton. Now it’s the second baseman, Jeff McNeel. Horton back to work. There’s a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Caleb Thebar, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. [Music] Inside corner for a strike. Tapped softly on the ground. Turner takes it himself. Now one gone in the ninth. Now batting catcher Francisco Alvarez. And next for the Mets, Francisco Alvarez. Right through there for a strike. Fast ball for a strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Misses outside. The countdown two and two. Good job to fight that one off. One down. Base is empty. That’s a ball. tried to attack with the sweeper. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. This one high in the air to left center. Crow Armstrong should have it. navs it and there’s two down now batting short stop Francisco Lindor two out space is empty Francisco Lindor up now for the Mets [Music] pitch misses inside and that is ball one two down nobody on here in the top of the ninth Texas swing Appeal down to third. No swing. Earl Hendricks with the call. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Shaw makes the grab and that’s the inning. Three up, three down that time. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Mets five and the Cubs two. So, they turn to their closer, Edwin Diaz. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Edwin Diaz. Now, the Cubs catcher, Carson Kelly. Carson Diaz, 30 years old now, and he was born in Puerto Rico. And first offering is fouled off. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. 0 and two now. That one missed. swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Well, the first batter, it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you’re going to wrap this thing up. Santana in now. Takes ball one off the play. And another ball. Swang and a miss. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. The Mets trying to close out a three-run lead here. The last half of inning number nine. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Cubbies with only one out left. Oh, this kind of tough right here. Closer comes in and he strikes out the first two hitters. It’s hard not to feel defeated and that this is going to go quickly, but you got to go up there maybe trying to find a way to choke up on the bat, spread out, put the ball in play, and maybe you can extend this inning. Swanson in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. Ball game. this team secures a winning season with the W today. And regardless of what else happens the rest of the way, you know that you’re a winning ball club. So, a little bit of pressure off. Put your foot on the gas and just see where you can finish from this point on. And your final score 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
