MLB Network | Mark Derosa BREAKDOWN Mariners beat Detroit Tigers 3-2 Game 2, to even up ADLS series
First win at home for the Mariners in a postseason game since 2001. And Jorge Palano a big part of it. Look at this. Players throughout Mariners history that have had a multih homer game in the postseason. And it is rarified air in this franchise. Junior Edgar Martinez and the pride of Mlennon Community College in Waco Jay Bruner who went deep multiple times in game three of the Cleveland Guardians. They had to have it Dro. had to have this game. Had to have it. So much goodness in this one, too. I was on I was on the plane watching this one. All right. At the Sunday Night Football up top and then on the phone we were locked in. Couple things before we dive in because we have a couple details. I want to get into Palanco JRod and the eighth inning for the Detroit Tigers. Tip of the cap to Luis Castillia. Regular season G game. He stays in there. Obviously understand the the you know gravity of the situation. He’s got to come out. Carpenter went bridge the night before. Dan Wilson was answering questions. I completely understand that. But tip of the cap to him. Tip of the cap to Gabe Spire coming in. He’s Eric Naz. He’s trying to Team USA. Gabe Spire left on left. And I want to give love to Munoz as well. He went multiple innings. Two innings on Saturday, one inning last night. Beared down and got them the W. Okay, let’s dive in on Jorge Palano. I thought Verduchi, Tom Verduchi did a great job of kind of highlighting the way Scubble was attacking the Seattle Mariners hitters and the fact that Jorge Palano was able to spit on a couple nasty What’s his signature pitch? It’s this change up, right? So, if you could show him right here. Woof. Pause that for me. I want you to take you inside the mindset of Palano right there and TK Scubble 10. We talk about this. You want to get in counts where you don’t have to think. You’re getting a heater. 10 in that situation. Bottom of the fourth, nothing. Nothing. He throws a 100 miles an hour. You’re telling yourself, I’m probably getting a 10 cookie right here. Give me a chance if you think 99’s a cookie. And all of a sudden, you get dirty change up and he spits on it. Wow. Run this 20 count right here. Bottom fourth. He goes deep on a slider. And it’s funny because we watched Scooble take the ball against the Guardians and it was the third time and it was like recent. So you knew, pause this for me real quick. You knew he was going to change up his MMO against the Guardians. I didn’t think it would become kind of a norm. I was seeing a lot of slider. If you could bring up the pitch usage board. I just saw Scuboo go to a what appeared to be fast ball was pretty static. ALDS 61%. change up right here has come down a little bit. Regular season he was throwing this thing almost 31 and a half 32%. And then boom 21.6. Look at this. Two lowest change up usage percentages of the season. His last two postseason starts and the slider was at 17 1.5%. And he threw it a ton. But I kind of figured and N kind of figured that he would do this just to give the Guardians a different look. I didn’t think he would get burned on it. his third best pitch by Jorge Palano. Now 20 get me over. Did he think Palanco was swinging in that moment? But he’s able to take this out. And then we go into the second homer. And we’ve talked about this and Adam Wayright, AJ Pzinski did a great job last night kind of taking you through the cat and mouse, but you’re seeing a lot of guys in today’s game try and drive that heater in. Run that back for me real quick. Pause it. Look where he wants this ball. Look at the shade of the inside corner. That’s a gamble down one- nothing. He’s got to execute this in and up. That’s a tight window. He leaves it middle. Palano’s ready. And Palano’s always been a quick snatcher in. Boom. Bring up Palano’s heat maps. Okay, this is catcher perspective. So, if you’re behind me right here, this is Palanco hitting from the right side. Look what he hammers middle in. Scoobs went to that sinker, came back a caught a little bit too much of the plate and it was too just just an unbelievable job by Jorge Palano. But I’ll tell you what, Scooble gave them a chance. I thought he gave him a chance. Pause this for me real quick. I want to set this up. the eighth inning. A lot goes into how do you produce runs? How do you get a rally going? All right, we’re going to focus and every highlight’s going to be Scoob’s double down the right field line and rightfully so, but what led up to it. So, let’s get into it. Glabber Torres leads off this inning. Run that back for me. I don’t know how he takes this pitch. 22 Matt Brash is 66% slider. So you know you’re getting it threearters of the time. It’s a 22 count run this in the eighth. I how do you what a pro take right there for Gabber Torres. Eventually works a walk and he’s on base. He’s been was fantastic for him the entire season. And then to comes up and lays an AB. I question the pitch decision by Matt Brash. I mean you see it right there. Run this back for me real quick. all the way to the beginning. Right there. Run this. Matt Brash throwing you sliders. He’s not He’s not losing on a heater. And it’s a battle for Torque. Pause this. It’s a battle for him to figure out where the outer half of this plate is. You see him swing at the first one, then he takes one, then he swings at the next one, and he takes it. He’s trying to fight to understand where the outer half of the plate is. I don’t know if they were trying to stand him up with a heater in right here. Run it. But eventually he gets to a two two count and he tells himself, “I don’t care what happens. I am staying back. I’m gonna rifle this heater.” Oh, what a good piece of hitting. He’s on slider right there and reacts. Stays back. Emergency react to the fast ball. Shoots it down the right field line. Just an absolute gorgeous, gorgeous swing. We had him in studio and he talked about this exact thing. Take a listen. Go 50/50 kill the legs and then it’s just hands. Hands 5050 kill the legs. Give it to me. Get 50/50. Kill the legs. And then I’m just doing hand drills. Working on my path and just backspin liners. It’s exactly what he did. What do you do? How do you The prepared player is common big moments. the unprepared. The game moves fast. He went back to what does he do in the cage. Two strikes on me, kill the legs, shoot the ball up the middle the other way, and in a big moment he was able to execute. It was absolutely gorgeous piece of hitting by him. The mindset about it. And then I just I just want to end it with J-Rod. We talk about stars starring. He has been so fantastic early part of this series, the first two games. I mean, who takes a high heater, top of the zone, chest high, stays inside it at 97, and drives it out dead center? I mean, we I think the world wants to like we want him to be winning MVPs and his first half. And the one thing I have noticed throughout the course of the playoffs and the course of the season, we’ll go side pause this in May, he has gotten wider in his setup, maybe to kind of calm down his eyes a little bit more, run this, but he has been fantastic. And I love when the stars show up in October and he had such for his for his stardom and underachieving first half. He was so fantastic in the second half and it has bled into the postseason and on the biggest stage him and Cal Raleigh go backtoback doubles and big moments to light this crowd up. So not surprised Raleigh got it started and if you look at this second half numbers we’re going to end it with a board. JRod’s fanraphs war leader since July 11th among position players. JRod Pommo Nick Curts and Showi Robert. Well, uh, yeah, under this current format, the team, the road team that has earned the split in the first two games, they have gone on to win the series almost 63% of the time. Logan Gilbert, Jack Flity, tomorrow in Detroit. It’s been a while since the Tigers have been at home. Remember, they ended the season uh, in Boston, so you know that crowd’s going to be rockus. All right, we got a lot to get to on this edition of MLB.
