Scott Sabourin suspended four games for roughing

Saturday night in Florida, Lightning forward Scott
Saburn was assessed a match penalty for delivering an unglloved sucker punch to the head of Panthers
defenseman Aaron Ecklad. As the video shows, early in the first period, the Lightning dumped
the puck into their attacking zone. Eblad arrives first with Sabin on his first shift of the game
for checking close behind. As Ecklad makes a play on the puck, Saburn delivers a hard legal body
check that knocks Ecklad to the ice. As Ecklad gets back to his feet, Saburn makes no effort
to locate the puck or return to the play and instead engages Ecklad again with a high shove.
He then immediately continues to go after Eblad, dropping his gloves and stick, grabbing Eblad and
delivering a forceful unglloved punch directly to Eblad’s face that causes him to fall back to
the ice. This is roughing. It is important to note that the collective bargaining agreement
between the NHL and the NHL PA spells out the factors which the Department of Player Safety must
consider in determining supplementary discipline. Among the factors listed are whether the conduct
is intentional or reckless and the situation of the game in which the incident occurred.
After a thorough review of the game video, a telephone hearing with Saburn and
the Lightning, and an understanding of previous incidents between these two teams, the
Department of Player Safety has concluded that this was an intentional act done by a player for
the purpose of retribution and message sending. This is not a hockey play gone wrong. From
the moment that he throws the body check, Saburn completely disregards the play, dropping
his gloves and throwing a forceful, bare-handed punch to an unwilling opponent. To summarize, this
is roughing. Saburn has been fined once during his 47game NHL career. The Department of Player
Safety has suspended Scott Sabin for four games.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Scott Sabourin is suspended four games for roughing against Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad

  1. This is what happens when Greer goes unchecked. Players and teams take things into their own hands. This is directly a result of DoPS not protecting players adequately and creating double standards.

  2. Nobody, nobody likes panthers, they are such a dirty, sneaky team, only people who like them is there families and there fans, built up frustration, refs need to be watching closer when panthers play, discusting

  3. When are the panthers actually going to get punished for anything? Not saying that tampa is innocent but how does florida walk away with no fines…

  4. yet another example of the double standard, they are worried about the nhl looking bush league.. to late rules for thee but not the panthers last couple years already cemented the bush league label. Funny thing, this push to make the market in south florida big wont even stick, soon as they dont win a title they will be back to some of the lowest attendance numbers in the league.

  5. So if he punched Ekbad with his glove on, which is far more dangerous, it would’ve been ok? And considering what happened with Hagel in the playoffs, how did Greer not get suspended for doing literally the same thing? I don’t understand the explanation

  6. Oh and Fvck @nhl too. Panthers are your chosen ones now? Ekblad deserved the hospital like he sent hagel. FU for not making it right. Sabourin did

  7. Players getting their payback because the league has allowed Florida to run wild with no discipline. Prepare for this to happen a lot this year specially against Florida

  8. FK YOU NHL. GET COLIN CAMPBELL OUT OF THE LEAGUE OFFICE. EVERYONE…. EVERY. ONE. IS SICK & TIRED OF THE DOUBLE STANDARD TREATMENT THAT THE MIAMI PANTIES GET FROM THE LEAGUE OFFICE CUZ OF COLIN'S DAUGHTER BEING IN THE MIAMI FRONT OFFICE. YOU DIDN'T TAKE CARE OF IT. SO….. WE TOOK CARE OF IT.

WE MAY NOT WIN THE CUP THIS YEAR BUT MIAMI'S GONNA HAVE HALF THEIR ROSTER IN THE MORGUE COME PLAYOFF TIME……… BET!
