you agree. [Music] [Music] Oh, wow. mix. [Music] Ow. It’s nuts. Hello and welcome to the Talking Yanks pregame show for game three of the ALDS against the Blue Jays. Yanks backs are up against a wall. Will they claw and climb their way to see another day or will they just fall over and die? Jake, your thoughts on my first question posed. John Davis, everyone tuning in. I hope it’s not the last Talking Yanks pregame show of the year, but as Jimmy mentioned, do or do not, there is no try, Yoda, that I don’t know. I think Yankee fans right now kind of have that crazy look in their eye like, “Hey, we’ll we did this this summer. If you want to send us a hook, if Rodon wants to shove, if we want to hit some homers and and look like the fearsome Yankees, we’ll dive in. What’s dead may never die. But I don’t know. I feel like a lot of Yankee fans are ready to just have their friends from the great north trash talk them because they got embarrassed for two games. Embarrassed. Yeah, I got some cool stats. Shout out to Quags and everyone. Here’s one about this current Yankees team. This current Yankees team have not lost three straight games since August 23rd. August 21st, 22nd, 23rd, they lost three straight. Since then, they haven’t lost that. Okay. Okay. Now, this is the 17th time in franchise history being down 0 and2 in a postseason series. Okay. They’ve won game three nine of the previous 16 times. It’s a little more than half. Okay. Um, the Yankees are 10 and3 in their last 13 elimination games at home. Okay. 10 and three. That includes the Astros loss and the Dodgers loss and the Red Sox loss. That was at home in 2018. Yeah. Gary Sanchez, fly ball off Kimbell just so those are the three. Okay. Uh 10 and three in elimination games at home since 2017. Uh what else did they have here? Teams leading 20 in best of five division series have gone 31 and3 under the new format. 31 and three. 31 and three. Odds aren’t good there. What happened in the wild card format if you didn’t win game one? Yep, that’s true. 0%. The Yankees are the only franchise to successfully recover after losing the first two games on the road in the current format. Only team that’s done it. No one else has history. So, you’re telling me and Judge was on that team and that’s all. Right. 2017. Mike Harkkey. Mikey was there. In the bullpen, that’s all. Right. Those are the two guys I can say we did this. We lost to on the road and we won. Higgy not there anymore. Mark Lighter Jr. might have been in the minor leagues. How about this one, Jake? The Yankees have never not once ever been swept in a divisional series. So, those are all your stats and figures, not the matchup today. So, we’re doing this, huh? And let’s see what happens. Rodon on the bump. First thing we do is lineups. Then what to watch for is pitching path to victory. And then uh homer draft. It’s a homer draft and then premonitions. What were our premonitions last? Did anyone get anything correct? Jake, not Jake. Joe’s premonitioned that a bunt play or something. The Yankees would score a run on a swinging bunt. Yeah. Swinging bunt. Yeah. Did that happen? No one cares. Seven of the least runs I’ve ever cared about. And what did I I said something else. I said they were gonna pick up. Someone was gonna get picked off. I don’t think he gave up a single single. It’s just doubles and homers. Um so anyway, lineup Yanks are running back the same lineup. Yeah, that’s a story that is. What are your thoughts on that? I was bummed. I don’t know the change I wanted to see. Yeah, because that’s the next thing I was bringing to the table uh when I thought about talking about it with you and then I was like, but I just kind of wanted a change. Like I don’t know. I wanted something to believe in, right? Like Cabierro’s in. Oh, all right. They must love something. He He’s going to do something. Goldie’s in. Okay. Well, he’s been like I just just kind of something to like grip on to. What do What do I latch on to now? Same lineup. Sam Smith. Um yeah, interesting that uh Shane Bieber, who’s pitching for the Blue Jays, who he was on those 2017 Guardians that coughed it up. Wow. Um he has massive reverse splits this season that righties have hit him really well and lefties have not. and we just came off the same thing from the last two guys, the last two guys. Um, so it’s interesting they didn’t push the button. Uh, Shane Bieber in his career, which the Yankees are probably leaning into that than the smaller sample size. Uh, lefties have been better against him and throwing the same pitches. Uh, I can double check for you. Um, I don’t think he’s throwing a split, so we we can look forward to that. If sees better ice come up, he might he might try to make one up. Um, he does have a change up. Uh, four seam slider curve change cutter. So, uh, he’s sitting 9293. This is a pitcher the Yankees have seen before. This is a pitcher the Yankees have seen before in the postseason. This is a pitcher the Yankees have gotten to in the postseason. Um, so yeah, I’m also surprised they didn’t press the button when Paul Goldmid has some decent career numbers off Bieber. Ben Rice looks so not good. Uh, and you know, you basically what you do there is you give yourself a little more balance in the lineup. You give yourself another lefty weapon off the bench with Ben Rice and you still have a Rosario who’s never made an out. Uh, they said if they’re going down with the ship, they’re going to go down with Ben Rice in the middle of the lineup. It looks like the change up and Cutter, he throws both of those to lefties. And earlier in his career, he was really like a two- pitch guy to lefties. So maybe those are helping out more. Yeah, a lot of four seam to lefties. A lot of four seam and knuckle curve and change up. Yeah. 37% for seam, 25 knuckle, 17 change, 15 cutter. Four pitch mix both sides. It’s pretty good. Um, yeah, I’m very interested for them how long he is for the game. Um, who they go to in the bullpen. We haven’t really seen that or needed to see it or whatever. They’ve kind of casually shown us. Yeah, here’s Hoffman. Doesn’t matter. Don’t matter. To righty’s 36 and 33% force him slider. So, still he’s got just a bunch of 10 11 8% on the others. Um, yeah. What’s their lineup? They they put Santandarin a Santan there. Yeah, they have their verse lefty lineup again because it’s Max Freed to Carlos Rodon, but they swapped out Mile Straw for Anthony Santan. Um, you know, he had a couple good at bats. Was a big free agent signing for them. And with the smaller Yankee right field, they’ve gone offense over defense. So, TA take advantage of that. Springer, Schneider, Vlatty, Kirk. That’s your back-to-back righties, VO Clement. Varo’s lefty. Vo’s lefty. Clement’s righty. Santan there. Switch. Switch. Ike righty. Gimenez left. Lefty. Pretty balanced. Um. All right. Do you have a what to watch for? My what to watch for in this game? Ooh, one of those tricky ones, right? Yeah. Um, uh, you know what? We’ve got obviously there’s been all eyes allises on Judge. Um, let me throw in let me throw in the free agent boys. Um, Trent and Belly. So sorry for a double and our one and three hitter. But hey, there’s always eyes on Judge and Stanton. And if it ends today and Stanton doesn’t have a postseason, that’ll become a comma. And people will say that Judge, he’s already having a comma postseason where the numbers look good. But all the even when we turn into old old heads, we’ll mention, yeah, well, you know, that postseason there’s one at bat that matted and he didn’t he looked he looked his wuss. Uh Trenton Belly, man. You guys have been kind of the life part of the lifeblood of this team. Two free agents. Uh Belly we essentially got for free. Cody Potit they released and he had a five war and all the money breath of fresh air season. Most of the money. Gisham uh who was a throwin. You have to basically the league told the Yankees you have to take these guys. And they became the meat of our lineup this year. Belly got a homer in the postseason game. He’d been looking for his 30th homer of the season all year or at the end of the year and he couldn’t find it. He had some bad games. Maybe that wakes him up. Trent has been overmatched by a lot of lefties. Well, you got Bieber there. Give me those guys cuz without if they had been doing things maybe we would think Judge’s postseason was better. Probably Judge’s post the numbers are good. was on base all time. Um, there’s one guy whose postseason is better than judges and that’s my what to watch for and it’s Aaron Boon’s four fingers. One, two, three, four. And one of my favorite quotes from Remember the Titans. Now’s not the time to be proud. How’ the Blue Jays beat us in the regular season when Judge was the only hitter? Get on your way Judgy. We’re not even going to face you. Vlatty is killing us. The rest of the Blue Jays are killing us. They don’t have the history, the pedigree, and they haven’t been killing us as much as Vlatty. Do not think that you’re better than Vlatty right now. What a fool’s errand. His numbers on this season on this on the series, you guys already know. Uh if you don’t, he’s six for nine. That’s a 667 batting average with two homers and six RBI’s. Okay. his career versus the Yankees, he has the most home runs out of anyone, a 311 batting average of 24 home runs in 104 games. His numbers at Yankee Stadium, he’s the best opponent at Yankee Stadium. Okay, 16 home runs at the stadium, second most by any active visiting player. Okay, now listen to this. his numbers against Carlos Rodon. He has a 588 batting average and a 667 on base percentage and a 941 slug. 10 hits, 21 plate appearances, only four swing and misses. Rodon has only gotten to two strikes 19% of the time. Against the rest of the league, it’s 31% of the time. That’s bad. Everything about everything is bad. If you pitch to him in the first inning and he hits a solo home run to give the Blue Jays the lead, you’ve just killed yourself. The momentum is zapped. You you you guys die easy sometimes. It feels like if there’s a runner on and he’s a two-run homer, I’d rather the meatball behind him hit a three-run shot. So, that’s my It’s It’s a cowardly begging. Hey, this guy’s real good. Please send him on his [ __ ] way and and bow down to him for a moment and see if the rest of the team can beat you. Maybe have Garrett do it as kind of a tribute. I mean, if if Vlatty beat you today because you tried to attack him in a big moment or and when you had a base open or two outs with no one on. Yeah. Come on, guys. Can’t happen. Can’t happen. I agree with you. Thank you. I agree with you. Those are our what to watch fors. Do you have a pitching path to victory? No. Oh. Should be worried about that to be honest with you. Yeah, I do not see one. Okay. Rodan to Devon to Bedar. Okay. I don’t see Rodan going seven. No. No. Hey. So, I don’t know. Surprise us. Los um Rodon to Doval to Devon to Bednar. Yeah. Uh Dval. Uh you think Doval if there’s an early righty lane that’s needed. Uh you could I wonder if they’d push Devin early. Um if it’s the fourth or fifth inning and they need to hold the game than going down with Doval or Tim Hill like you need to you need to extend the chance of winning this game as long as you can. Uh Rodon and his two starts this year uh against the Blue Jays uh were both five innings, two earned runs. In one of those games, there were four runs. That was the July Yankee defense kicking in. He also had five walks in that game and three walks in the first game. So, Los, that’s okay as long as they’re targeted at the right cap. Um, interested to see his demeanor tonight. We’ve seen him turn it off so much that I almost want him to turn it back on a little bit. I’d like it if he went slitler style and was just collected and cool, calm. Yeah. I don’t know if that’s his persona. He’s been the best when he’s like that. Yes. But you see him It’s almost like he’s the last time we saw him, it almost felt like he turned himself off a little too much. He just We need a special performance. Yeah. He He needs to use all of his pitches. like the change up needs to be on because um if you go to that four seam fast ball to try and strike him out, they just foul it off. Yeah, they just foul it off. So, you need to be using the change up and using the other pitches. Uh and sometimes he has those and it’s awesome. Sometimes he doesn’t have those and he faces teams and he can still get away with it. I don’t think he can get away with it if he can’t uh use his full mix of pitches. Yeah, and I think if if you don’t have your a stuff, which hey, maybe he does and we’re, you know, Schlitler went eight, we’ve seen some very good outings this postseason. Maybe maybe that can just be the story and we could talk about that after. Uh either way, you have to limit the damage as much as possible that he shouldn’t be saving pitches. I don’t think you could save anything in the tank. that hey, if you’re Carlos Rodon and you can only get through five with one run today and the Yankees have to go down with Dval and Hill, well, that’s how they have to go. Um, so I’ll be interested to see when Boone presses that button. Hopefully, it becomes a none of this matters. The Yanks hit homers. Rodon looks great. Williams Bednar, see you tomorrow. Uh, but yeah, a little bit of fear in everyone’s voice. Rodon has allowed three plus runs in seven of nine career starts versus the Blue Jays the way the offense is going. But this is if they’re going to let Bieber pitch because they have a the bullpen tomorrow and they like their lead. Although, did you hear Schneider’s comment that he only packed one hat? Oh, and the the Blue Jays if they win, they wear the same uniform. So, if they were to lose, they would have to wear a new hat game four. He said, “I only packed one.” So, he’s gonna be hatless tomorrow. If the Yanks win, that’s a big storyline. Interesting. I mean, he becomes a liar. So, they’re wearing a different uniform tomorrow if they if there’s a game tomorrow. I was told that the Blue Jays uh have been wearing these un they wear the same uniform if they win. Okay. Oh, so that’s why they’ve been like cuz I was wondering why they were wearing those uniforms at home cuz the the white and white with the blue uh piping, right? I think are those are classic. The blue the white pants with the blue top reminds me of spring training, the mix and match, but someone said, “Well, they’re they win, which I like. I like riding out uniforms on winning streaks.” So, they’ll probably be in gray pants or blue pants tonight with the blue tops because they’re not going to wear white pants on the road. So, the tops and the hats, I think, stay the same. And I think John Schneider’s quote was like, I don’t know if you can find it because if you It’s like Schneider packed one hat. Search. I think he said he only packed one hat. They plan on winning. So maybe he’s going to use the full bullpen. Beaver’s not in it for long. Tipped his hat. Tipped his hand. Literally tipped his hat in a way. Yeah. I don’t know. It’s a night game at Yankee Stadium. That should feel better. That should feel better. Blue Jays had the best home record this year. Believe so. So, I don’t know. Stadium be loud. Get ahead early. Get ahead early. Can’t have Vlatty shushing him like the first. You know, Judge hitting his first home run of the postseason. That’d be nice. Stan does it right after. That’d be nice. Twice. And then don’t make a bunch of brutal errors and lose it because then if you did that that would be reminiscent of game five of the World Series, right? That was a bummer. Up five in the fifth maybe. Yankees four and two at home versus the Blue Jays this season. One and eight on the road. Win. Like those like that better game. Yeah. Did I make up that quote? Were you able to find it? Yeah. He said he said he only brought the white panel hat. Yeah. Maybe we’ll see John Schneider at Lids tomorrow. I’d [ __ ] love it if they do lose and tomorrow he’s in a different hat than everyone else. I think you get fined for doing that, which is crazy, but I would be funny if he was like, I gonna do pregame has a chance to age really badly. Egg on my face. Team could probably get him a hat. Like if MLB resource tool will tell you the outs during his plate appearance like how many of those came with two outs and then he ended the he’s 0 for five. I would get my honest guess is four out of five have been inning ending. So look for that if if I So who’s batting ahead of IKF? Oh maybe that’s a throw up the four situation. You think pitch around IKF’s been very nice. Uh IKF before Andre Jimenez or after Santandere. Okay. So Santandere should not pitch. Four of his five outs ended the inning. I was right. So I four of his five outs have ended the inning. He’s been very kind. Is very respectful. We appreciate it very much. Santandere if there’s two outs and like a runner on, just pitch around him. Goldie Well, every starter they’ve run the same lineup three games in a row. And I think you took Goldie game one of the wild card. I know that’s previous series, but you have any premonitions? Oh, give me a moment if you don’t mind. Okay. I have one and it’s totally um it just came to me. There’s no thought behind it of jinxing or Okay. or hoping. It’s just something that came to me as like, well, that’ll probably happen. Okay. But you go first or do you want do you have if you got it? I’m searching. All right. Do you want me to be quiet while you search? No. Okay. I want to hear you. Uh, I think for the fourth time this season, the Yankees will will open the game up. Homer, homer, homer. And you can’t force these for things can. It’s just that’s what I closed my eyes and that’s what came to me. And I is it the fourth or the third time this season? I forget. I think it’s the it would be the fourth time. I think three times this season they’ve hit three home runs in the first three at bats. Three. Uh definitely two. Definitely two. Maybe three homers in the first inning they’ve done. I think they done it three times. That’s a really good premonition. I don’t like to look at premonitions as good or bad or hopeful or wistful. They’re just kind of whatever came to my head. But if that did happen, I agree with you. It’d be it would change a lot of the narrative and the vibes. I think I’m going to go with maybe the rarest premonition. someone’s limb falls off that can be premonized. Um, it did happen last postseason. Would you be like, “Well, then Jake, I don’t know if that’s the least possible premonition that could be premonized.” When I’m talking about body parts just falling off. Well, this is of similar ilk. Oh, fan interference. Jim, this team has a leader from Carlos Stanton. Yeah. Last year in the ALDS, he stole a base in Kansas City. [Music] Jim Carlo stolen base. He’s trying to rally the troops. He yelled at them in August. He’s yelling at him now. He gets on base. No attention paid to him. And Carlos Stanton stolen base. Oh my goodness. And he’s safe. have to be otherwise it’s not. Maybe bats the ball down. I saw something like that but it didn’t feel like the same play. You think any animals get involved tonight? I’m very welcome to it. If it’s not a cat, how about this? If Yes Network at It’s not Yes Network, it’s uh Fox. If Fox at any point in the first couple innings or you know throughout the night if it’s a close game, they cut to a shot of a bird sitting uh like perched a perched bird. Perched bird. Sometimes that happens at the stand. There’s been owls in the distance. There’s been like a big crow on the top. If if there’s a shot of a perched bird from Fox tonight, be ready. And also screenshot it. Send it to me and tag me. I just kind of got a real premonition. Whoa. Yeah, that was a real premonition. Black Dolly. Black Dollalia just came and smacked you in the face. I feel like the Long Island medium when you said perch bird. All I heard was pass ball. Oh, Yankees score their first run on a pass ball. Shoots my premonition right in the [ __ ] face. Yours wasn’t a premonition. Not trying to trying not trying to have a battle here of like who’s closer to God. That’s not how premonition they’re premonitions aren’t good. They’re not bad. They’re not hopeful or they’re not wisful. Not hopeful, but they’re not wishful. Wistful. Hopefully we get to see you guys on another pregame show.
