If Kobe was still good enough at 40 to be a star in the league (i.e. Duncan, Kareem, LeBron) he’d definitely want to. But he wasn’t at that level anymore, and it’s not really worth being a roleplayer after all those years being among the best in the league.
Kobe had a tough final year. His final game was awesome, but that final year… he was obsessed with the game, but I don't think he would've accepted a bench role while averaging 9 points and being a hole on defense. That interview was 3 YEARS after Kobe retired.
