MARINERS POSTCAST: Seattle Mariners BLOW LEAD AND LOSE Game 4 of ALDS to Tigers

[Music] This is the Mariners Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Well, the boys chose quite a game to have an absolute bullpen blow up. Yeah. So to speak. Uh so game five it is in Seattle. Friday might be afternoon, might be evening. We’re still waiting to see on the timing on that depending on the other ALDS game. We’ll update you guys uh of course when that happens. Uh, but things just didn’t go your way today. It was kind of the inverse of yesterday to be completely honest. Um, and I’m just going to say it right now. I don’t blame Dan Wilson at all on this one. Uh, I think most of the decisions he made, I’ll point one out that I don’t think had a huge impact on the game um that I didn’t like. But in terms of the bullpen usage, those were the guys that I wanted in those situations and it just didn’t work out. They were not good. Um Detroit seemed like they were a little bit more urgent in this one. Of course, it is an elimination game for them. Mariners go up 3-0. Uh they get a couple opportunities to really put it away, but it ends up uh not working out. And it’s a 9 to3 loss for the Seattle Mariners. I was about to say eight, but I forgot they got that last one, too. Nine to3 loss for the Seattle Mariners in game four of the ALDS. Uh Chris Crawford, initial thoughts on this game. It’s just a bummer. It’s a bummer that you build a three nothing lead. It’s a bummer that, you know, everything seems to be set up so perfectly for you to just close this out, advance to the ALCS for the first time in 24 years. You know, I saw a lot of people pointing out this has been a pretty good day in franchise history in the past. Today is the 30th anniversary of Edgar’s double. It’s the 30th anniversary of that massive comeback against the Blue Jays. Well, that doesn’t mean a dash gosh darn thing because you absolutely pooped the bed today. And it’s disappointing. And I totally agree with you, Anders. Today was not about X’s and O’s. It was Jimmies and Joe’s. And your guys just flat out didn’t get the job done. Just didn’t get the job done. Um, a lot of blame all around. A lot of blame all around. uh the offense doesn’t score another run after the fourth inning, I believe, and your bullpen just absolutely craters. Just freaking craters. And that’s disappointing. That’s disappointing. The good news is because he took care of business yesterday. We’re not talking about the uh the funeral. This is not the eulogy of the Seattle Mariners. They get one more shot. They’ve got to beat a really good pitcher for the fourth time this year to do it. But they still get one more shot. So, it’s not the end all, but it’s very disappointing they weren’t able to get this done. And it’s very disappointing why they weren’t able to get this done. Yeah, that’s kind of how it conspired or Yeah, conspired was uh conspired. Uh oh, there you go. I I didn’t even try to do that. I promise. It works. Uh, so I I think the one of the only people you can’t blame for today, uh, we’ll start with Bryce Miller. Oh, he’s fantastic. Uh, was awesome. Um, I, uh, before we get to the decision to take him out, I just want to point out how good he was. If you were to tell me he would go, what was that? Into the fifth inning. Um, or was it into the fourth inning? No, it was into the fifth inning. U, end of the fifth inning. Uh, allowing technically that that first run is his. Um but into the fifth inning, starting the fifth inning without allowing a run. Yeah. Uh I think I would have taken that every single day for today, especially given how uh how many how many guys you had available in the bullpen and uh he was awesome. I think he was dealing. Um and I also think it was the right decision to pull him when they did. So uh I’m curious, start with your evaluation overall of Bryce Miller and then the decision to take him out here there in the fifth inning. I thought he was terrific and I think it’s actually kind of crap that he gets charged for one of those runs. Um, if Randy Rosarin is the left fielder next year, I’m gonna have a fit. He He has no freaking idea what he’s doing out there. None. He’s one of the worst left fielders in baseball. The garbage route that he took. And then what pisses me off is how freaking lazy he looks after the garbage route. I can deal with bad routes. I can’t deal with laziness. Randy Rose Arena was freaking lazy. And oh, I’m close to using a different word than freaking. Sorry, already locked on. Um, garbage. Hot garbage. Which is so disappointing because Bryce Miller was so good today. The control and the ability to locate down and up, which is something we just haven’t seen from Bryce Miller this year. He was really good. Really, really good. And yet, I have no issue taking him out in that situation. He gave you 55 pitches. He’s been a guy who has really struggled the second and third time through an order this year. So, I have no issues whatsoever with pulling him there. Obviously, in hindsight, it looks like a horrible mistake because of just how freaking awful Gabe Spire and Eduard Bazardo were, but the process there was fine. The results sucked. You know what? But the actual process of pulling Spire there, I had no issue with. But it was really encouraging. And I know nobody wants to look at long-term stuff. It was really encouraging to see this version of SP of Miller, excuse me, because he’s an important part of that team. This was the guy who was their best pitcher in the second half of 2024. It was nice to see maybe not that exact version of that guy, but a semblance of that version of that guy. He pitched terrific and deserved a lot better. Uh so then they uh go to uh G Gab Spire for at the time was Parker Meadows uh into uh it was right after Dingle. I have to look up the actual box score for what part of the game that was at. Um at first I was thinking why not go to Bazardo first here and then wait for Spire to get the top of the order with Carpenter and Green. But then I thought about it more and I was like well you know I just you probably want Spire for both of those pockets. you need him in the biggest moment. He’s the guy I probably trusted the most in that spot. Uh and I was fine with again putting him back out there for what was that? The sixth inning. Uh and was Yeah, sixth inning. The sixth. Yeah. So, do you have any qualms with the decision both to lift Well, put it in this order. Lift Miller. Nope. Go to Spire. Nope. And keep Spire for the top of the sixth inning. Yes. So, this is this is where I I slightly disagree. Here’s the thing. I would have gone to Bazarda there. Bazardo was so freaking garbage that I can’t say, “Oh, boy. I sure was pitching.” He was awful. Like awful today. Both of them were like, they just didn’t have their command whatsoever. I mean, those balls were absolutely pissed on. Um, it wasn’t like it was dink and dunk stuff. They would absolutely shellacked those guys. And the big concern is, you know, there’s been a lot of study about this. These guys have seen Gabe Spire now for four games. These guys have seen Yor or I always want to call him Yorman. Uh these guys have seen Bazardo for four games now. You’re still gonna have to rely on these guys in game five. Have to. Have to. Have to. Have to, but they clearly had a pretty good idea what they were doing at the plate there. Um I probably wouldn’t have let Spire keep going just because of how freaking terrible he looked though in that. Uh, and you know, I do happen to remember that Riley Green has home run off of Gabe Spire this year. That the only home run he had today off of a left-hander coming into today was off of Gabe Spire. So, sees the baseball pretty decent against him. That’s my only issue with what Dan Well, I have one other freaking issue. We’ll talk about it in a second. I’m sure it’s the same freaking thing. It’s the same thing. Luke sucks. Um, I have no issue with anything else and ultimately it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because the guy I would have brought in was hot, flaming, wet garbage today. How can you be flaming and wet? Oh, it’s it’s possible if you suck ass like your or Eduardo Bazardo did today. Holy crap, he had nothing today. He’s so lucky that there was an awful base running move to just get him out of that inning for a little bit. just absolute hot, flaming, smelly garb. It was just awful. It was awful. It was awful. And it’s disappointing because we have sung the praises of him all year and deservedly so. He was so good. So good in these first three games and so terrible at baseball in the this game four. Just terrible. Terrible. Sucks. Yeah. So, the only other question I have, I think we’re basically on the same page here. I I don’t think there was much better than like maybe you don’t take put Spy out there for the sixth. I still would have wanted a lefty for Carpenter and Green, but we’ll you know, well, but Carpenter’s done. He He gets Carpenter on a uh Carpenter hits the hit stick to get Josh Naylor at first base. And by the way, if the one guy you don’t want to hit the hit stick on against is probably Josh Naylor at first base, you’re not going to win that one, buddy. um did not feel bad for him whatsoever, but it was green to start the the bottom of the green to start and I and I get it, but at the same time, you got to watch what you saw there, Daniel. And what you saw there was a guy who just didn’t have it today, right? Just didn’t have it at all. And now you have burnt pitches for Spire coming into a game five, which is going to be just so freaking pivotal. That’s the only reason I would have gone with a fresh reliever there. But I get it. I also I can’t say it’s like the worst decision in the world and it doesn’t matter cuz both guys sucked and it doesn’t matter. I just look at it like if they if you had put Bizardo in to face Green and the same thing happens which we saw what Bizardo looked like the same thing probably would have happened. Uh then we’re saying the same thing like why are you putting in a Righty to face Riley Green who is so much better right. So like I I think both you’re kind of you’re damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. So hard hard to blame Dan Wilson. This is just the guys executing today. uh out of the bullpen. It they just weren’t good. And two guys that you have been able to rely upon all year long. So, I mean, it’s tough to say that’s just baseball, but sometimes that’s what happens. And I think you made a really good point. This is like the third time. I think they’ve seen both Spire and Bazardo in the series. And guys, this is what happens when you have a longer series. You face guys more often. You start to time up their pitches. You could see what their sequencing looks like a little bit. So that’s just something that that’s why having just good dudes instead of guys that maybe fool guys a little bit, not maybe not with the stuff as much. And that’s kind of what I feel like with Gabe Spire ends up being the case. That’s what happens in a little bit longer of a series. Last question before we move to the second half of the show. Any thoughts? I saw some people and I was trying to think of a good way to explain this, but I want you to kind of help me out here. With just one more game in the series and a possible only one more game left in the season, is there any thought to use like a George Kirby out of the bullpen or a Luis Castillo out of the bullpen um in in those situations? Any thought? Not Not with if you’re starting a clean inning, sure, I would absolutely think about going there. Not with runners on. It’s it’s so hard. There’s a mentality there. Um and you’re going to need both of those guys. I think both Castillo and Kirby are going to have to be guys who pitch multiple innings for you in game five. You have to think about it. You I know you want to manage to win this game. And also managing to win this game, putting George Kirby in in a high leverage situation. Okay, let me stop you right there. Anyone asking for Emerson Hancock? No. No. God, no. You’re not going to Emerson Hancock in that situation. You’re not going to Carlos Vargas in that situation. No, you went with your best and your best got beat. It sucks. It sucks. But that was absolutely the right decision. It just didn’t work out today. Totally agree. Uh let’s talk about the offense a little bit. There was a couple moments. I mean, you scored three runs early in the game. It looked like things were kind of humming along and then one big uh oof inning happens and uh you don’t really get much for the rest of this game. We’ll talk about a couple performances that stand out to us here on the Mariners Post. Don’t go anywhere. What do you get when you have a bald eagle standing on top of a silverback gorilla riding a T-Rex? Man, that’s a strong T-Rex if that’s the case. Confidence. Pure confidence. The Mariners lose this one 9 to3 in game four of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. It seemed like early on the Mariners were rolling. They looked like they were ready to close this out uh and have a couple days rest to wait for uh who they might have faced in the ALCS. Hold your horses says Detroit because they are not bowing out of this yet. And honestly, but I know some Mariners postcast. Credit to them. Uh I totally credit to them. Um, I don’t think that I know it we kind of view things in the Mariners scope a little bit. Um, this feels less of in terms of X’s and O’s. This I know you didn’t execute with your relievers, but this ter feels less of a Mariners lost this game and more of the Detroit Tigers just took advantage of what was given to you. I would agree. I would agree. I I think that the Detroit Tigers absolutely were uh a team that was kind of due for an offensive game like this. you know, they they were a pretty darn good offense before September. And, you know, Zack McKinstry, who has just been wretched in the postseason, was due for a good game. Um, Riley Green has finally his game. I literally saw I was reading the comments, uh, which is a terrible thing to do. Never do that. But I was looking at the uh, Tigers lineup and I saw several Detroit fans asking, “Why is Zack McKinstry in the lineup and why is Riley Green in the lineup?” I mean, everybody panics at this time, right? And and to be fair, Riley Green has been atrocious coming into there. Atrocious. But that’s what’s scary, right? Like good baseball players, you know, go through lows and go through highs and go through lows and usually the lows are followed by highs. And today, you know, he takes advantage of a just dreadful gamepire pitch. Tigers were good today. The Tigers were good today. And what I keep coming back to, Anders, and I meant to mention this in my opening uh saliloquy, for lack of a better term there. Uh should have won Saturday. Should have won Saturday and today doesn’t happen. And Friday doesn’t have to happen either, which is o Yep. They have a uh a task in front of them now. Uh it’s going to be monumental going against Scooble now. We’ve seen them do it before. I We’ll we’ll leave the kind of preview episode to Tai and Colby for tomorrow. Please tune in to them. Uh but let’s react to today’s game. Uh early on you get some uh some good stuff uh from uh Cal Raleigh hits a hits a hits a pitch in or hits hits a single in. I think it was Randy that scored at that point. Uh Dom can zone singles. Victor Robless even though it should have been more grounds into a double play. Let’s talk about that fourth inning because I think that’s going to be one of the things that we think about from today especially on the offensive side of the ball. Uh T Tyler Holton comes in to replace Casey Meers, which I’m like, why are they taking out Casey M? He’s looked pretty dang good at this point, even though the Mariners at that point were up 1 Z. Uh I was I was very surprised to see them uh kind of go to that point. Josh Naylor singles. Aeno Suarez singles. Uh then you bring in Oh, excuse me. I’m looking at the No, that’s the right one. Yes. Um Aeno Suarez singles. Uh you bring in Mitch Garver for Domone. We’ll talk about that decision here in a quick second. Uh he walks uh and then they bring in Finnegan and uh for Robas with the bases loaded, nobody out and Victor Robus grounds into a double play. Guys, for everyone that’s obsessed with putting the ball in play. Yeah, there you go. This is one of those situations where I would have rather Victor Robus struck out. Okay, I realize he scores the run and there’s a slight chance that you don’t get that later, but you gave yourself one less opportunity. And by the way, uh you if you had gotten a single from JP Crawford or an extra at bat that you get without having the double play, you would have scored two instead of one, right? And then get to the top of the line. It’s just there’s so many things that a double play in that situation really, really hurts you. You get bases loaded, nobody out, and score one run. Chris, were you happy at that point to get the run? No. No. It was a disaster to only get one run in that situation. And you know, looking back on it now, you lose by six, so you can’t just say, “Hey, that’s the reason they lose.” But you had a chance to put this game away. Absolute chance to put this game away. And you know, Robas does walk twice in this game, but like he’s got to be my unsung villain for this one because holy crap, that was just an awful, awful result to get the double play there. And you know, unfortunately JP Crawford go doesn’t get the hit there. He goes 0 for two with runners in scoring position after having such a good game there. I do want to point out that Mitch Garver had a really good at bat before to draw that walk. I had no issues pinch hitting there. I’m not using Domone against a lefty guys. I’m just not. Having said that, if I see Luke make another at bat for this Seattle Mariner team in the postseason, I’m going to call for Dan Wilson’s job because it’s malpractice. It’s absolute malpractice. This guy sucks. He’s a bad baseball player right now. He helped you at times in 2025. He really helped you at times in 2024. He’s worthless. He’s a worthless baseball player. He’s not a good defensive player. His speed is fine. His ability to lay down a bunt because he’s a freaking idiot and because he can’t doesn’t mind getting in hit in the ding-dong by anything that could come near him. That’s the only thing he can do right now. He’s garbage. He’s hot garbage. As much as everyone here hates Mitch Garver, and I mean hates Mitch Garver, Mitch Garver is substantially better at the sport of baseball right now than Luke. Absolutely a huge mistake to pinch hit Luke. There is too much Montgomery Burns managing from Dan Wilson where he just says it’s called playing the percentages and bringing in a lefty for a righty. Bull crap. Doesn’t matter if he’s left-handed, right-handed, switch-handed. He could stand in the middle of the freaking play. He’s not going to do anything with it because he sucks. Lukeley sucks. And Luke should not get another at bat for the Seattle Mariners in 2025. He’s garbage. He’s garbage. I don’t care if he hasn’t played, by the way, at all. What even bigger dumbass decision then to bring him in? Why are you using a guy who it doesn’t have any the ability to hit whether or not he’s played a lot or not? Horrible, horrible decision from Dan Wilson. It’s the only one that I can truly say, as much as I didn’t love Spire starting at six, the only one I can truly say this is stupid is Luke hitting for anyone right now. Let freaking George Kirby come up to bat over this guy right now. He sucks. Yeah. Uh I I just want to say number one, totally agree with the sentiment that Luke really sucks and he should not take another at bat this season. Uh, number two, I would have even taken uh if it meant throwing away one of Dom Canzon’s at bats because like you want to keep him in the game, burning him like I would have been fine with three Domzone at bats other than one Domone, one Mitch Garver, and then one Luke. If that’s what the alternative is, that that’s fine. That I I would agree with that. I had no issue with going to Garver in that situation. Yeah. But keep Garver in the game. Yeah, keep Garver in the game there. just not what you did. Well, there you go. Exactly. Uh and again, this is it’s a small thing that it’s it doesn’t make you lose this game. Uh you lost this game because your bullpen didn’t execute. Um but again, these are these are domino effect moments that you don’t know what can happen if someone else comes through. Uh it just it sucks. It sucks that the Mariners dropped this one. Little things happen like this. Um and that’s I agree with you. That’s about the only time I can point to a Dan Wilson decision that I don’t love. So, that will be my unsung villain because usually when uh we uh I don’t know when we evaluate bad decisions, it’s usually a sung villain situation. It’s an unsung villain situation for me with Dan Wilson today because of that decision. So, uh hopefully they kind of figure it out uh that he can’t hit right now. Period. I’m fine with a pinch runner, but that that is Yes. Yeah. If he’s got to run, he’s got to run, man. He is such a um he is a good athlete. He is a good athlete and Luke really has had success and it won’t be shocked if Luke really helps somebody next year. I kind of doubt that it’s Seattle based on how the roster is built right now. He just isn’t good enough right now. He stinks. It’s okay. It’s okay to say he stinks, guys. He’s not the reason they lost. But I can crash out over watching Luke have zero shot in the batters box right now. It sucks. Yep. Absolutely sucks. Mariners lose this one 9 to3. We’re having a game five uh of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers back in Seattle on Friday. Derek Scubble versus I don’t even think the Mariners have announced who they’re throwing out there. They could throw Castillo out there if they really wanted to. They could also do George Kirby. I think it’s going to be fascinating to see who they decide to start because you could make an argument for either one. Both pitch well. I know George ends up giving up the two-run homer, but he was fantastic outside of that. and more of an issue for Wilson not lifting Kirby in that situation, right? Um, what I would probably do, and this is Ty KBY territory, I understand. I would probably go to Castillo for three and then I would go to Kirby for three and then rely on the high leverage guys. That That’s what I would probably do. That’s what you did today. Yeah. Yeah. It’s just um really quick, Chris Crawford, because I know we’re already short on time and I I want to make sure I get your thoughts on this. Why isn’t that double challengeable down the line? Oh, because the ball makes contact before it um lands. So, there is uh if it if it would have just been a line drive that goes over into that section, then it’s not then it’s a challengeable play. if it makes contact before. Oh, and the honest reason why is because MLB is a stupid organization and that they just and the MLBPA is the most one of the most powerful unions in sports for better or worse. Yeah. Uh was it a fair ball? No. No, it was clearly a foul ball. Clearly a foul ball. But it’s not because it bounced outside. It has because it bounced in the infield. It has where it goes over third base. Correct. Correct. So, and if they would have been able to challenge it and look at it, that ball was found. It was clearly a foul ball. But because it’s not challengeable because of where it landed in the first or where it started its end trajectory, it sounds like NASA what I’m talking about. Yeah, I know what you mean. Yeah, it’s um it’s and most people most people pointing out like, oh, that bounced three feet outside the line and that’s not where that is determined. It’s because it bounced before the the the base in the infield. It it depends on where it crosses like on a vertical line above third base, but even though that was the case, that was still foul. So, it’s still a foul ball. Yeah. Yes. All right. I just want to get your thoughts on that. I know again these are small things where when you lose by six runs, it’s like okay, that’s is that the reason why you lost this game? No, but I just I wanted to point it out because that was a frustrating thing in that moment. Great. Mariners lo Yeah, Mariners lose nine to three. Uh look out for an episode of Lockdown Mariners with Ty and Kobe tomorrow. Um, we’ll be your kind of uh obviously right after each game. Uh, Ferguson opener. Oh god. Is that actually true? No. Okay. Thank god. David, you don’t worry me like that because I I would not be surprised with anything at this point considering the decision making uh with this team lately. Uh, okay. We’ll talk to you guys on Friday after the game. There’s a chance I’ll be at the game. It depends on the timing. I’m really rooting now for the Blue Jays, which hurts me because uh if it’s at 1:00, I cannot go to the game and I have to do it from the studio once again. So, that’ll be a big yikes. Uh we’ll talk to you guys later. Um really appreciate everyone hanging out with us. Let’s hope this isn’t the last one we have on Friday. All right, Chris Crawford, does that sound good to you? Game five, let’s have fun.

Anders and Chris offer their live reaction to Game 4 of the ALDS between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers. Bryce Miller was solid. The offense did enough to take a lead, but Gabe Speier was awful and Eduard Bazardo was somehow worse. Now it’s a do-or-die Game 5 against Tarik Skubal on Friday. Fun?

  1. Come on Mariners fans! Better to have a beatdown in game 4 than in game 5. I figured this series would go the full 5. Can't let this L mess with your head.

  2. Too early to go to pen you heard the announcers said all their lefties gonna have abs latter in game and then what you just throw splits out in crunch innings? Pinch hit raley for canzone who got your first rbi knock and he hasn’t done s**t since he came off injury.

  3. I guess I cannot figure out for the life of me what one means when they say (paraphrasing), " I know many like the ball put in play there, but look what happened – a strikeout would have been much better." Are you sincerely saying that A) Robles has control over that, B) people shouldn't swing with the bases loaded, or C) he should have just stood there? Does Dan have a sign for the strikeout he throws out there in those situations? Is there a 'double-play' sign? This is a bizarre thought process.

  4. Tiger fan I thought we were completely dead after 3-0! Tigers haven’t had double digit hits since we played the Yankees weeks ago. That’s how awful the bats have been over the last month. First team to 3 wins game 5! Getting skubal out by the 7th or earlier will be the biggest challenge

  5. It doesn't help when you have incompetent umpires like Alex Tosi on 3rd base calling foul balls fair and giving the Tigers free doubles that change the entire game's dynamic.
Onto game 5 I guess. Can the umpire crew just leave Alex Tosi in 8 mile and get another umpire for Game 5 so both teams can get some quality officiating.

  6. i didn't agree with taking Bryce out there really. he was dealing and i would have given him one more inning, OR friggin popped George Kirby there for two innings cause you still have Castillo ready for game 5 in case and have your leverage guys used less for a pivotal game 5

  7. I know Bazardo was terrible, but I would've brought him in after Miller to face Meadows. Putting Speier in made it way too easy for Hinch to use Jones

  8. How do you not blame Dan? He pulled Bryce after 1 run on pitch 50, left Speier in after giving up 3, and he pulled Canzone in favor of Garvwr and Raley for multiple ABs…. That's inexcusable

  9. The game made my stomach turn. Like physically sick. Mariners doing mariners things, even after the Naylor incredible double play to save the first attempt at this happening

  10. I don't agree with not blaming Dan on this one. You went to Speier for Parker Meadows which AJ Hinch would gladly pinch hit for and put Speier facing two righties before getting to the lefty you want him facing. Should've just left Miller in for at least Meadows. That or you had to go to someone else out of the bullpen. I really thought this was a blast from the past time to see Brash come in and stop any momentum right away.

  11. Am just starting he podcast so idk if you touched on this yet but… Why TF is Dan taking Canzone out these last couple games with one at bat!? And for Garver??? Although Garver is a right handed hitter, he's on hitting .220 for the season of them and Canzone is hitting .270 and has PROVED he deserves playing time! For ONE match up and you put in Garver for one AB just to swap him later on for another LH bat?? Ugh. Drove me crazy when they pulled him in that situation
