Keith Pompei, Mark Farzetta, the 76ers lose both games against the Knicks in Abu Dhabi. I’m sure it was a great show for the uh Abu Dhabians. I don’t know. Uh but they put out a great presentation and all that. the NBA did a lot of fun watching the promos of historic moments in the NBA. But when it came to watching basketball, Keith, I’m glad we got to see VJ Edgecom and Tyrese Maxi share the back court. I’m glad we see we got we got to be reminded of how much of an athlete VJ Edge is. Has another slam dunk, a skyscraping slam dunk, tomahawk dunk if you will, uh in today’s basketball game. And we got to see the guys work on some things. But uh my number one takeaway, Keith, and I don’t know if this matches yours, is even without Joel Embiid and Paul George, and yes, albeit a preseason game, 17 hours away in Abu Dhabi by flight, the 76ers still have a lot to work on before the regular season gets underway. Yes and no. Um like I’m I’m going to be honest, like we didn’t learn anything about the 76ers. Nothing. Okay. Not. And and the reason being is because you know we’re talking we’re looking at this thing right now and in the starting lineup you have VJ Edgecom Bona and and and Dominic Barlo. Those three guys probably won’t start right. I mean they just won’t. Um you know and when we look at it the 76ers played without and this is they played without five of their top eight players right in both games. So, you know, right now the the big question mark is that if I’m a fan, I want to see a what’s MB look like? You know, as Paul George, what does he look like? Okay. Well, well, well, how does Quinton Grimes, you know, how does Quinton Grimes look as a as the fourth option? You know what I mean? Oh, what about Jared McCain? You know what I mean? Is he going to get his shooting back? Is he going to be the sixman? Is he going to be the Lou Will? None of those guys played. None of them did. So when I look at them playing against the New York Knicks, you know, um OG Anobi, Carl Anthony Towns, you know, um Mitchell Robinson, Muel Bridges, Jaylen Brunson, oh Jordan Clarkson coming off the bench, uh McBride coming off the bench, Yaboo coming off the bench. Right then and there, they had their top eight players playing, whereas the 76ers were without five of their eight. And when you look at it, you know, you’re saying to yourself, like, are some of these guys who came off the bench and and and and played for the Sixers or started, are they even going to be on the team? Like, once the regular season happens, are they going to be on the team? So, you know, to me, it was one of those things. Yeah, the 76ers look bad. They look worse than the tanking 76ers. But at the same time, it’s it’s one of those things if I’m scratching my head, if I’m a Sixers fan, saying to myself, I learned nothing about the 2025 267ers based off of what I saw today. Uh, generally speaking, I agree. Uh, but the thing that I thought left a lot to be desired and I I this is again factoring in the idea that nobody was playing versus the Knicks who I mean Josh Hart played game one, got hurt, didn’t play this game, but yeah, you’re right. They had their guys. The Sixers certainly did not have all of their guys. But unfortunately, the reality of the Sixers situation is they have to get used to moments where they don’t have their guys. Um VJ Edgecom look for as if he was a great athlete in summer league and he was a great athlete coming out of college. He looked like a freak athlete over the last two games just in terms of his jumping ability, his quickness, his uh defensive effort and everything there. Like he just he looks great as far as athleticism goes. He is even more off the charts than we expected at the close of summer league. So he’s improved in that. But yeah, it’s going to take a while for these guys who are going to have to play games together. It’s going to take a while for them to find that chemistry. And that’s what I’m referring to as they look like they’re far apart as that goes. But it’s unfortunate that the way I’m accustomed to watching the 76ers play is without Paul George, it’s without Joel Embiid, and it’s with whatever it was 58 different starting lineups like it was last year. So with with that in mind, I watched this and went, “Okay, they still got a long ways to go.” And then look, it’s the second preseason game. They played both these games in Abu Dhabi. They don’t play again for about another week until they play Friday against the Orlando Magic in South Philly. But with that, looking at it from that from that like gl those glasses on the a lot of uh lack of fluidity which I expect in the preseason quite frankly. Uh but I will say this, I look at all the young guys. I look at a guy like Jai Broom. I look at a guy like VJ Edgecom obviously and all I look for in preseason play in any sport, not just basketball, but all sport. Just don’t look scared. Look like you belong. Don’t look like the moment’s too big for you. And especially with VJ Edge, that’s the obvious. And I thought also with Janai Broom, I didn’t think the moment was too big for those guys playing these two games in Abu Dhabi. They looked like they they they wanted the basketball. They looked like they wanted to be aggressive. They they look like they wanted to put their teammates in good positions uh to make plays on assists or or feeds or whatever, moving the ball around. From the two younger guys or two rookies essentially that you drafted, I thought I thought I saw two guys that really wanted the ball in their hands. Yeah, I mean those two I mean you know those two guys played well, but you know the thing that really stood out to me like Well, here’s the thing. Okay, like I said, five of the top eight didn’t play and you are right. You’re going to have to learn how to play without them. But I think the players who you’re going to depend on to play without them are going to be Trendan Wford, right? A guy who didn’t play. Quinton Grimes, a guy who didn’t play. You’re going to need VJ Edgecomb to step up, right? But but here’s the deal though. It’s like when I’m looking at these guys playing, you know, the the role players, you know, role players for your team to be successful, they have to do the intangibles, right? They got to do that. You got to rebound, you got to box out, you got to do like just do everything perfect. You also got to play with great energy, right? And then in the first game, they came out of Demona was looking like maybe because his brothers were there, but he came out looking like a beast early on. And he didn’t match that energy early on in this game. There was also times when you saw guys going hard on one play offensively, but then they didn’t get back on defense, which led to easy baskets to the for the other team. Those are things that are inexcusable. Like you cannot do that. Like even like, you know, closing out. There was one time when I saw Barlo way on the other side defending the three and turn around and sprint to the other three side and the guy hit a shot and he’s looking around like, “Yo, what are you guys doing?” You know? So, those are the things that me is like, “Yo, y’all got to give better effort because if you’re going to be a role player for the 76ers, you have to win these loose ball, these 5050 balls, you got to hustle. You got to grab rebounds. You got to do a lot of other things. And I just didn’t see it, man. And then something else I noticed in two games. We look at Kelly Ubé, right? You look at Kelly Ubé. Kelly Ubé is kind of like Justin Edwards in a way where everybody say he plays well with stars because you don’t have to run plays for him. He cuts to the basket. He’s a great rebounder. he’s, you know, really athletic. But on these two nights was a night where I felt like Kelly Ubé needed to get more involved, right? So whereas when I saw the Maxi and and and VJ Edgecomb show, right? Um, you know, it’s kind of like, don’t y’all want to get Kelly the ball, too? Like, don’t you want to get Kelly involved? Because, see, this is what happens. And I saw it in the first game. you start seeing bad body language and then when you get the ball, it’s kind of like, okay, I ain’t passing the ball out. I’mma take this shot. Well, you start missing shots because a they’re either just a horrible shot to take in the first place or you’re rushing a shot, right? Because you’re out of position and it’s like I know if I pass it, I’m not getting it back. So, he ended up shooting, I believe, five for 12 today. Um, but he started off horrible. the last game he was two for eight. So to me, it’s one of those things where like y’all got to find ways to get role players when everybody’s healthy involved when everyone’s not playing because you need that. Kelly Ubé shouldn’t be taking less shots than VJ Edge right now. You know what I mean? Like there there’s nothing I mean and nothing about VJ and I get it. he’s the number three pick. But if you really trying to win, you want to ride somebody that you know is going to make the shot as opposed to somebody, you know what I mean? Like who’s still a rookie and and doing things. And it should be a little bit closer, not to where Kelly’s getting more shots in the second half because they ain’t playing as much. Yeah. Yeah. Uh it’s interesting you talk about the moment of getting back on defense. There was one play, I don’t want to say it was in the third quarter, maybe late in the second. Janai Broom was left alone and I think it was um Anunni and I think it was Brunson that were driving on him on a fast break and it’s literally twoon-one. He’s a lone man back for the 76ers on defense and he actually came up and made the stop and I thought, you know, he look he didn’t have to move around a lot because we’re we all know he’s got to work on his quickness, but at least he was there. He was there to make the stop and he was there to get his hands in on the ball to make sure that they didn’t come away with two points in that situation and no foul by the way. Just straight up helped the Knicks miss their layup and then they were able to get the push down the other end. So that was just one play in particular that stuck out to me again about a younger player actually getting back on defense. But you’re right, generally speaking, oh my goodness. I I like I don’t want to blame a a flight or anything. I don’t want to blame a long business trip here for the for the NBA. I think that’s just an excuse. These are guys that are going to be fighting for minutes. These these are guys that are going to be fighting to be on an NBA roster. And it just didn’t look like that effort was there a a lot of the time, especially in the first half. In the second half, the Sixers actually won the second half, I think, by five points for, as we were saying before we went all, you know, started live on the show. What What does that tell you? Not much, unfortunately. But at least that some effort was there. Um Chandler was a guy that was giving you effort tonight. That was good to see. Uh but that was like a few and far between thing really throughout throughout the game. Mainly in the first half that was a concern for me. Yeah. And that’s what I’m saying. The second half I even start tone tuning stuff out. Only reason is because it’s kind of like at that point you know we looked at the Knicks. What did they do two g two days in a row? Two games in a row they sat their guys in the second half. Yeah. Whereas the Sixers would have certain guys in there playing. You know what I mean? So, you expect them to go on a run and and no offense to some of the guys who who had pretty solid games, but you and I both know that they’re not going to be on the rotation. I mean, it got to the it got to a point where, you know, Allah and them were saying, “Yeah, this is good.” You know, it’s all about putting everything on film. You may not make the Sixers team, but you want to have a good performance so someone can pick you up. And you know, the second half of NBA preseason games, the early ones, reminds me of AAOU basketball. And it reminds me of AAU basketball when you have all the division one college coaches, top 25, sitting in the stands and you’re a guard who some people say is unheralded, but if you get a 30point performance, you think you may get a scholarship to Florida. So to me, when I look at that and I see these guys like going for self and going for broke, it’s like, hey, they want to get a contract to a NBA for an NBA team. So, you know, I just I just need to see more um in the first half. And you know, you saw a little bit of spurts, but like you said, this team looks no different than what it did last year. And hopefully for them they can get these guys back. But and I understand 100% Paul George may not be ready. They got these injury concerns. We talk about Quinton Grimes um you know signing his deal. They got four preseason games. You know, I don’t know if you want to rush guys back, but I think we need to figure out or we people need to see dress rehearsals of what they’re going to do with with with the top guys. You know what I mean? Top guys, because and and another guy that got to step up is is is Justin Edwards. Like, you know, he he got he step up, man. He has to like, you know, I saw some bad shot attempts. Um I saw some things. It’s just one of those things like, you know, these guys got to step up, man, because the East is wide open, bro. And you just got to step up and you got to be able to do stuff and make and make things happen. You touched on one of the names there. I want to get a little bit more into Justin Edwards when we come back. But also, there’s one more play I want to talk about with VJ Edgecom where again, he just had his athleticism on full display, and we’ll talk about that when we return. Before we get into the bad of Justin Edwards a little bit more, the good of VJ Edgecom and I I’ll say this again for people just joining us. We knew he was a great athlete coming out of Baylor. We saw him be a great athlete through two games in the in the uh summer league. He looks like weightlifting program and all that stuff adding on some muscle between summer league and now it looks like that has also helped take his athleticism to another level. He has just looked incredible in these first two games. Speaking about athleticism and athleticism alone, he has looked incredible. Uh he had the tomahawk jam in the first quarter of today’s game that was pretty awesome. He had a great steal at midcourt, threw it back to Bona, which I thought was an interesting decision, but you know, whatever. but still was able to get the steal there at midcourt. And then had another play, Keith, I I have not seen too many of these plays, the rundown block with the outside hand with the right hand. He comes around and gets the rundown block like that. The third, it was early in the third quarter he made that play. It wasn’t like he slapped it off the backboard. He rejected it back to midcourt and he I thought he showed his speed on that. He showed great hands on that. And obviously uh getting another another hash mark in the box score is also a good thing. But I thought that play in particular that was showing off his athleticism as well. Yeah, he did show off his athleticism, but there were a couple plays like did you see when he hit the air ball three in the corner? He shot so I mean and again it’s like he’s a young player. He he he’s developing like right now, you know, right now what he is is he has a lot of potential. He has a lot of potential to great be great and he’s showing us that. There was a couple plays on the defensive end where I felt like, you know, he was caught in no man’s land, right? I’m talking about in the first half, like, you know what I mean, against Brunson where I saw him guarding him, but then again, like you said, that block, it was great. You know what I would like to see is I would like to see him shoot the ball a little bit better overall. You know, he did have 10 points, but he shot three from nine. Now again, the shots that he made, he made one three, which was good, and he made two athletic plays, right? But there was times where, if you notice, they left him open in the perimeter, and he took the shot, but he missed the shot. Now, again, this was kind of like the knock on him in in college, right? They said he needed to work on his three-point shooting and he also needed to work on his dribbling. They said he was more of an athlete. So, with that being said, you can see where if I’m the 76ers, at least initially, I really want him to come along, right? I want to start Quinton Grimes because, you know, until he gets up to a level and then he can take over. But as you said in that role by doing that, you know, he can just focus on what he does athletically and then once he develops the shot, gets a little bit more comfortable with the speed of the game and everything like that, then you can you can have him. But yeah, I agree with you. The athleticism was there. I just would like to see, you know, better shooting from him because, you know, here’s the deal. Like, this is a preseason game, right? And when I look at these preseason games, you know, again, I’m kind of focused on more like what are you doing in the first half when you’re going up against their starters, you know, cuz like in the second half to me that was more like a G-League game where you expect him to do what he has to do. You know what I’m saying? Like he’s like the best athlete. But so to me, I would like to see that. But again, the things that I’m bringing up are things that people said about him. So it’s like the work ethic and everything, he’ll get there. It’s just going to be a little bit more of a process. Uh the airball, by the way, yeah, I marked it in my notes. It was about the fiveminute mark of the first quarter. Airballed the corner three on the feed from Maxi. I thought Maxi did a good job of swinging the basketball around. found VJ in the corner and he didn’t he wasn’t short on it in golf. You call that the pro you miss it on the short side. Got to miss it on the far side, the pro side. Uh and he did that. He overshot the rim. Not ideal, Keith. Not ideal. Uh then later he also clanked a three after there was some uh good ball movement. Uh but again, him just shooting the shot, having the confidence to shoot the shot I thought was good. There was another good ball movement there from Maxi and Walker. I think Walker actually got credit on the assist for this one and that was VJ Edgecom’s three and that was that went down in the first quarter around the 330 mark and then the second quarter or excuse me at the end of the first quarter this also impressed me about VJ Edgecom today I like this from Nick Nurse it looked like they wanted VJ Edgecom despite Maxi still being in the game it looked like they wanted VJ Edgeham to have the ball in his hands for the last shot and I love that in a preseason game end of the quarter it looked like they were deliberately trying to have VJ Edge him take I think it was Brunson on him at the time. He ended up missing the shot, but as you said, and we’ll we’ll acknowledge as we started the show, this is all under the umbrella of preseason play. I like the idea of going to your third overall pick rookie in that scenario and say, “Hey, you know what? Let’s practice this end of the quarter, last shot. Go ahead and try to take Brunson.” He took him, but unfortunately Brunson got the better of him. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it is what it is. You know, you got you you baptism by fire. We’re talking about and I love it. They won they went up against he he they had him guarding an allNBA point guard who’s one of the best point guards, one of the best offensive players in the league, right? One of the guys that’s tough to stop. Um and then, you know, going up against them and then you had MueL Bridges, you know. So the thing is is just that the Sixers just need to even like see the the thing is this is the one the one thing that I will say about the 76ers for the first three minutes of the first game I saw something where I said okay when Embiid’s out of the game and Paul George out of the game you’re going to get up and go and you’re going to run and you’re going to do this and I saw that. Then after that they went away from it a little bit. It was more like It was controlled chaos in a way whereas and what I mean by that is you see Maxi come out dribble a little bit he’ll attempt the big three or he’ll come up and he’ll pass the ball like today he passed the ball there was one time where he’s dribbling he passed the ball to VJ but then VJ had the shoe off so he passed it back to him right like I would love to see in that instance where you Maxi is dribbling and you have somebody at the high post or whatever and as soon as they see look give Max a look and they sprint to the basket or they do something and they, you know, find them in there. To me, it just looked like the structure was kind of missing a little bit today. It was like just guys doing stuff. There was a couple times when I saw Drummond rolling to the basket, but they didn’t find him. You know what I mean? It it reminded me of like just guys were just out there playing and in order for the 76ers to be successful, I think that they got to find guys more so than just finding a guy at the three-point line. Like when you see these dudes cutting, you got to make it a point to give them the ball, right? Because all I saw was them is spreading, you know, wing, you know, slinging it out trying to get somebody at the three-point line. Yeah, I agree. I think that was a that was a midcourt play I think you’re talking about. They cross the line and Maxi has the ball gives PJ come PJ come has the ball in his under his arm and his shoe in his hand and then threw it back to Maxi and I went all right and nurse is like time out time out time out. Yes. Yeah. Like that’s not that’s not okay. All right. Preseason, right? Preseason in Abu Dhabi. All right. When we come back, we’ll talk a little bit more about Justin Edwards and also what the Sixers need to do between now and next Friday when they play the Orlando Magic in South Philadelphia. So Keith, we might look at a guy like uh Ty or VJ Edge and say, okay, well, we get rookie mistakes. You know, he’s taking the shots 0 for six, whatever he might be from beyond the arc like he was in game one. He hits a three today. He airballs a three from the corner. He’s a rookie. Rookie mistake. Justin Edwards, not a rookie. Justin Edwards played himself into a nice contract last year for himself considering where he started, where he finished. Summer League comes and goes. Eh, not good for Justin Edwards. Today, uh, I believe four points on the day. He hit a three and a foul shot. So, there we go, Justin Edwards. But other than that, he has looked really, really, really bad in the last two games. And this is a guy that we thought uh we thought of him as a rotational player coming out of last year coming into this year. How concerned are you with where Justin Edwards is right now and what his contribution could be in the upcoming season? Well, I have to see what he does because what they’re saying is, and everyone says this, he plays well when he plays with elite players. So, I got to see Justin Edwards on the floor with Joel Embiid, Paul George, the full complete staff. I mean, uh, the rotation to see what he does. Now, today he was one for four, like you said. He did have five rebounds. So, right, I’ll give him five boards. Okay. Five rebounds. So, he was crashing the boards. He was one for four, but he was 0 for8 the last game. So, in two games, what was he was he was one for 12 in two games shooting. Right. That’s horrible. Um, but the thing is, it’s one of those things when you look at him and you say, “Okay, well, this was an undrafted guy who still in wasn’t that high.” You know what I mean? Now, granted, he was the number three overall uh recruit in this class when he was at MOT two years ago, or was it three years ago now? But at the same time, it’s is it’s one of those things, you are right. He has to play better. And I think that they’ll give him an opportunity to show what he can do when he goes around and plays with elite with with elite players. But the problem with Justin is kind of sort of he has to be become more aggressive when certain players aren’t out there. like you can’t continue to become the role player guy, the guy who’s focused on doing the intangibles when they need you to score, you know, you know what I mean? Like, oh, absolutely. Not you, you just can’t do that. And I think that’s what happens. And you’re going to have poor nights shooting the ball, but you got to bring more energy, more effort because he was also one of the guys who was just standing around there. But again, the 76ers will tell you that in their opinion, Justin Networth plays a whole lot better when you have him out there with um elite players. He fulfills that role. Yeah. Look, and I’m no body language expert, uh but I think we’ve been watching sports long enough where you could see when a player has confidence and when he doesn’t. Uh Edward’s first free throw attempt, I believe that was a miss. Um, and he clanked that one and just looked like nothing was going right. Like he just, you know, the way he was just kind of carrying himself at the line, you just look at him and go, “Oh, he ain’t.” And like he feels it. He could certainly feel it. And I’m sure any NBA player would feel it. But when you realize you should be playing at a much higher level considering where you left off last year and it was a struggle in summer league, it was a struggle in game one of the preseason and you’re struggling again in game two when yeah there’s not stars around you but at least you’re out there on the court and Tyrese Maxi is running around. You know a third overall pick and VJ Edge comes running around you should be playing a little bit better and yeah I’m not trying to judge everything just off of missed shots but body language uh is certainly a thing. the fact that he did have those five boards, that’s a good sign. But I look, I I want the guy to do well ultimately if he’s playing well because I don’t think he’s going anywhere. I want him to be here to help the Sixers. So hopefully last two games of the preseason, you’ll see a little bit better of a version of basketball from him down the stretch. Um lastly, Keith, you got the Orlando Magic coming up Friday. The Sixers have the next five days off after today uh before they’re back at it. Uh so quick turnaround after a trip back from Abu Dhabi. They don’t have to do any more autograph signings or hold any Falcons. They get right on the play and they head back. Is that how that’s working? Yeah, they’re they Yeah. From what I was told, I mean, they just going back home. Yeah. It’s like after the game, they just leave. Yep. Yeah. All right. So, what what do you want to see between now and Friday against the Orlando Magic? I mean, I guess I want to see I want to see some of more of the regular players playing. That’s what I want. Grimes play. You think Grimes plays Friday? I mean, why not? Like I I think that you get a couple days of practice. You know, I’m I’m pretty sure like, you know, whenever the Sixers practice, Quinton Browns is going to be there if he’s not at the facility already. You know what I mean? Like getting up getting in some work and doing something. So, I want to see I mean, they got two games. They got they got this Friday’s game coming, then they have another week, and then they play again. And I want to see I want to see what everybody was telling us about Trendan Waford, how he was like a point forward, how he was going to like set stuff up for Maxi and all that. I want to see him play, you know. I want to see Embiid at least one of these games. I want to see what Embiid can do, right? 1. This being a pre-season game means nothing The Knick's should be more concerned as they were at full strength Adem Bona(can you score some) is not the answer and crumble cookie jr(Kelly) needs a new team to be uninspired on

  2. Marc keep talking about VJ's athleticism. He gotta make shots in this league dawg. The reason I'm so upset about not signing Grimes for multiple years

  3. Sixers need a guard that creates ball movement
    Not pass around perimeter movement
    But someone who collapses defense
Shifts defense with ease with ball handling and can pass naturally
    Maxey doesn’t cut it
VJ is better imo and he hasn’t found his shot yet but I see more of the natural ability
    Maxey is not a creator
    He’s catch and shoot
Not even a natural scorer if he’s not open

  4. For the record, this is 100% about Josh Harris not wanting to pay luxury taxes, regarding Grimes.
Grimes was willing to consider something around 17 M for this season. It is lies about 25 – 30 M from the Grimes haters.
Yes, Grimes may be worth 25-30 M, but he always knew he had to prove himself.
That Morey was prepared to match any offer for Grimes and was willing to keep Grimes over Yabu tell you he believes Grimes is worth an 80 M contract over 4 yrs.

Morey has to keep his boss happy. That he wouldn't offer more than 9 M for 1 yr tells me he was never considering trading Grimes this season, anyway.
Morey will soon correctly say that the Sixers can offer Grimes more than any other team next summer. They own his full Bird rights.
