Boeser, Myers & Adam Foote Pre-Game Media Availabilities | Canucks vs. Flames (Oct. 9, 2025)

another season. What What makes this one different? Uh, personally? No, just is there a different vibe going into going into this group than maybe what you had in the past? Um, yeah. No, I feel like vibes are high. I feel like um, you know, all the guys came to camp. We worked really hard. I thought we uh, our preparation has been really good and um, I feel like uh, guys have bought in and yeah, things have been going well and uh, we’re all excited to get rolling here. Adam is choosing to load up that top line at least in the early going here. Just how much I don’t want to say pressure because it’s only game one, but how important is it that your group produce offensively consistently? Yeah, it’s really important. I think um that’s got to be a goal of ours to go out there and uh kind of drive play and uh kind of show the team that what we’re about and that we’re here to to you know kind of be role models to the other guys, the younger guys on how to work and um just show that uh it’s going to be a long year and and we’re ready to go. Has it helped that you guys were together as a line pretty much through the whole preseason to work together and start to build chemistry? Yeah, for sure. Um yeah, I mean any you know obviously in camp they can be switching lines a lot and uh to stay with the same guys and build that chemistry. It shows that they want to roll with us and um you know that should be a opportunity for us and a challenge. So we got to be ready to roll as a line and and drive the play. You talk about being a role model for some of the young guys. How much of a spark does it give to see an 18-year-old in the lineup tonight? Yeah, it’s awesome. Um you know he’s he’s such a nice kid. He comes to the rink every day. works hard and you see how good how good he is on the ice. So, I’m uh really excited for him to get his first game tonight and um yeah, it’ll be good. Do you say anything to him about how to manage first one? No, I mean I think you know it’s your first game you shouldn’t really be worried about mistakes or anything. You just got to go out there and have fun and enjoy it. Were you 20 when you played your first 20? Yeah. How would you have done in 18? Oh jeez. I was thinking about that and I’m not sure. I I feel like I was skating with all the North Dakota guys when I first got there at 18 and I was feel like I didn’t fit in with them so I don’t know if I would have fit in in the NHL. What do you remember from your first NHL game? Uh it was a whirlwind. Um kind of a blackout. Um obviously playing at home and uh playing in front of so many friends and family is just a dream come true. So it was obviously a it’s a great moment to look back on. What do you like? What did you like from Pety in the preseason that makes you think that this is going to be a good balance? Yeah, I think he looks confident and the way, you know, he’s starting to make plays that we’ve seen seen him make before and um you know, he’s you know, with when he has his confidence, he’s he’s a tremendous player and um you know, he’s an elite passer and sees ice so well. So, I’m really excited for him. I think he uh put the work in and he’s ready to go. You’ve been through these openers a bunch over your career. what makes opening night special from players perspective? Yeah, I just feel like uh you know over the last couple weeks we’ve put in so much hard work and um you know I think it’s just exciting to get to the regular season kind of what you’ve been working for over these last weeks and um you know I kind of just show what show everyone what we can do. I have a lot of faith in our group and um you know like I said a lot I feel like we’re prepared and we put in the the effort so I’m I’m ready to go. What talked about you potentially killing penalties this year, Brock, what are your thoughts on that considering you haven’t? Yeah, I’m excited. I think it gives me confidence and uh I haven’t really gotten a chance to kill penalties since I’ve been in the league. So, um you know, I think uh you know, it’s I’m excited. I’m excited for the opportunity and hopefully I can make the most of it. Well, Tyler, maybe just talk about the excitement around the room as you guys head into game one. Yeah, it’s always it’s always fun getting the year going. Um, you know, I I thought we had a really good last couple weeks. Uh, you know, the the vibes in the room are really good right now. Uh, guys know exactly what’s expected of them and we want to come out uh with a strong start. I know that a year ago there were a lot of questions about the depth on the back end. This year it doesn’t seem like that at all. This looks like a pretty good group. One through six, one through seven, eight, depending on how deep you need to go. Does it feel different in terms of your ability as a group to to move the puck and and just play at a high level? um doesn’t feel too different. Um you know, I think, you know, when you take a look at our back end, uh you know, we feel we have a really strong core back there. Uh young guys have really stepped up in the last, you know, year. Uh so I think that’s going to help us a lot and uh yeah, just it’s the same approach every year for me. Uh you know, not not a lot has changed. What do you remember uh from your first NHL game? A lot of excitement. Uh you know, a little anxious, a little nervous, uh very excited. Um so, uh you know, I expect a little bit of that tonight. Think Adam’s feeling it at all? His first as a head coach? Uh maybe a bit. Uh but he’s been around so long, gone through so much. Uh you know, I I think he knows how to handle it. How about the opponent tonight? The Flames obviously played last night, so it’s the second half of a backto-back for them. At the same time, they’ve got a game under their belt. So, what do you have to expect from them? Yeah, I mean, they had a, you know, they got a good win last night for them. Uh, we know they’re going to come out hard, uh, wanting to follow it up. So, uh, but a lot of a lot of the focus for us is what we have to do within this room. Um, you know, obviously look at, uh, some of the things that they do, uh, just like they are with us. But, uh, you know, we know we know how we have to play. Uh, give us a chance to win every night and we’ll just try and do that. entering year 17. Is it hard to believe now that you spent almost half your life playing in the NHL? Yeah, when you put it like that, for sure. Um, but it’s good. Yeah, still love the game. Um, you know, I’m just as excited, you know, coming into this year as I was my first. So, uh, you know, um, looking for a strong start and, uh, you know, and just enjoy it. Any words of wisdom to the 18-year-old that’s joining you today, Coots? Just have fun with it. Work as hard as you can. Um, you know, I I know how he’s feeling. So, uh, you know, let him, uh, let him enjoy the moment and, uh, help him out in any way we can. First game as a head coach. You pretty excited? Yeah, it’s it’s, uh, in I’m in the zone, you know? I mean, I’m trying to stay just like it’s a bring myself back, you know, when you play, how do you get ready for big moments? So, are are groups ready? They’re in the zone and uh, we’re ready to go. We always ask the rookies if they’ve got family in the stands. Am I a rookie? I haven’t been a rookie in a long time, but talk did treat me like a rookie my first time. Uh yeah, you know, actually my mom flew in. Yeah, that’s nice. Yeah, your PK was a source of much pride last year. Third in the league. Uh Blue’s not here to start. Uh Sudter’s gone, but you do have a lot of guys. How confident are you, Adam, that you guys can kind of pick up where you left off last year? I mean, even if those guys were here, we’ve discussed first game, second game with high emotions, even though we really we think we have a good PK and we did lose a couple guys whether they’re here or not, we want to make sure that it’s a good question by you that we’re not too reckless with our emotions early uh to give our PK more time, but we should be ready to go. We’ve, you know, Dino’s been doing a good job working together with getting the guys are going to have to step in and and play a higher role. you know, Garland played so well for the US and uh he was first over the boards in the PK, so he’ll be getting a lot a lot of workload, especially until our younger guys can can get a a hang of it and u we’re confident that we’ll be we’ll be there. Sherwood has a lot of attributes for for the PK guy. He’s heavy on the fore. He’s got a lot of bite. Uh he’s a lot of push. Pretty smart player. Yeah, he’ll he he’s he did well on it last year and he’ll continue to have a big role. Do you mind your you so one last thing. Do you mind your star players killing penalties in the past? P uh Pety was doing some of it. Quinn was doing some of it. But would you rather that go to other players or you you mean defenseman? Even up front like uh you know what we’ll we’ll just manage the game. I mean it’s it’s different in different situations. Uh how much they’ve played or not? Um if we feel a younger guys got enough reps, things like that. So we’ll just that that’s not something we think about it, we discuss it, but it’s it’s going to change as the game goes. the face off part of it, you know, if if you you lose those two guys and they’re pretty good in the circle, does it change your strategy in terms of maybe not having as much possession in the early stages of a PK? Well, you know, we were actually pretty good last year when we didn’t, whether it was a faceoff, but we were one of a team that wasn’t great on clears last year and we still had a strong PK. We’re going to just we’ve discussed that and want to work on that and and we will it’s important to win some of these faceoffs or a lot of them and you know we’ve Ratty’s a good draw man so there’s going to be situations where they’ll they’ll go out there and they have to know what they have to do right after that face off so Dino’s been working with them and you’ll see some of that tonight as well. You’ve got two good goalies so on a lot of nights you’re going to have to make a decision. Uh can you tell us who’s starting tonight and how difficult? Well, I think you know, but no, I I I it was funny. I’m not getting on you there because I was This is new to me and I guess teams don’t give you their starter. I don’t see why we don’t, but it’ll be Demco. So, yeah. Obviously, lots of attention on Prison the year he needs a bounceback year. What have you seen from him in the preseason that makes you believe he is going to bounce back? Just maturity. I mean, he he’s in his zone. He he’s been working. Um he’s been focused. He’s he’s been um a sponge with information. We haven’t get him too much, but he’s been just really in his own that we like body language even too. It looks like he’s heads up. Really good. He’s he’s just leading properly and he’s focused on what he has to do to help the team and it’s been nice to watch. Are you a give a speech guy? Not really. Now it’s we’re not going to things don’t change cuz today we woke up and it’s the first game. We’ve been working on this for a while and uh you know the guys know what they have to do. We’ve asked you a lot through camp about Braden Coots. Do you just let him be on a day like today or do you let him be? Yep. He knows uh he knows what he’s doing and there’ll be, you know, especially Scott’s role. Um Scott Young, he’ll be the one with the friendly reminders to the forward just like I was as a D coach, friendly reminders to the D or Mike PKA last year, Dino. So friendly reminders I call them. And same with Brett with the power play. And as those coaches feel needed, it’s it’s friendly reminders I call not necessarily that they’re doing something wrong. You can even show them when they’re doing something right. and uh something I believe in. So, but as far as the plan and and how we’re going to play, he he knows. Whether it’s the rookies or the vets, what’s the overall focus for the team just heading into game one? Just focus on what we’ve been working on for the process. We It’s just another game. You know, maybe a few more uh emotions you got to throw in the drawer today before the game starts. That’s it. Um whether it’s a regular season, that’s the mindset we want to have. And uh you know, we’re not going to be perfect at it when we’ll try to as coaches reel them back in maybe when it feels a little intense for them out there. For example, last game against Edmonton for about two or three shifts, we got in a a race with them. Uh they’re a good rush team, our F3 was a little bit too low, didn’t reload fast. Once we got played our game, uh got refocused back on our strategy, we were good. So that’s that’s what we’ll try to try to do. How much concern do you have down the middle with bluear out and starting a rookie in the middle? Yeah, well, he’s we’re going day by day and game by game and he’s there because we believe in uh what he can do and he’s got a great support around him and it’s not just one player, it’s the whole group out on that ice surface that will make his life in game easier. Last year it took 96 to get in the West. I think uh every game obviously is so so you guys are going to be in that chase pack. Can you talk about it? Like every game seems like it’s just crucial for you and it’s the now and I don’t mean it’ll you’ll hear from me all year. It’s the way I I believe whether you’re playing lacing them up or coaching. Um we just focus on today and our proc process that the work and the habits that will will chip away at that and it should we should have good results. Two more please. You guys saw it firsthand last year on opening night. Edmonton saw it last night and this Calgary team just doesn’t go away. Yeah. And you know, you look at the game and you hear people say, “Well, there’s a a bobbled puck by a goalie.” Well, no. The guy was in his face. And yeah, it was bobbled, but if he didn’t work, he he wouldn’t it wouldn’t have mattered if it was a bobble or not. My point is, and it’s going to be to our players, the same is they’re going to work. They’re going to go to the net. They’re going to crash the net. That’s their identity. That’s what they do. They got, you know, they’re they’re always crowding the net. They’re never going to go away. So, we got to make sure that we don’t take that lightly and and be prepared for that. It’s back to back for them, but they also knocked off some rust last night. Like, does that Yeah. capt your attention and that it’s Yeah, we’ll be talking about it because there’s no way they’re not going to be ready. They’re that’s who they are. They they’re they’re made from guys that don’t mind going into battle and they’re they’re going to keep continuing being hard to play against and we’re going to make sure we’re ready for

  1. I like how Foote talks directly to the reporter who asks the question, small but shows how respectful he is.

Love how honest he is about the PK and team as a whole. Seems like a players coach that won’t be afraid to be honest
