Charlotte Hornets vs Oklahoma City Thunder | FULL Game | Oct 09,2025 |NBA Season 2025 Today
easy to go. We saw that defense just completely change games so many different nights. Even when the offense wasn’t going, they can crank it up in the third quarter. Was so big in the postseason as Wiggins first shot of the second quarter. He finds the bottom of the net. How about that massive screen by Isaiah Harkstein. He’s done it a couple of times already. Tell you, you know, a guy that doesn’t have the basketball can be does a great job. creating shots for his teammates as Bridges knocks down the three for the Hornets. Joe off the catch. That’s back to back Tre in rhythm. That’s going to be one of the challenges for this Thunder team going into the season. Well, and no one was better at it than the Thunder last season, folks. Still in the basketball at 10.2 a game and per 100 possession. That was the best one in the last 12. Yeah, they’re keeping them below. 35% shooting so far tonight. Little birdie wrist with that in my ear, but I I like to pass it along to you. The Thunder outscored their opponents, you know, by what, 1,247 points in the regular season. My goodness, just a nice balance not only to the defense, but to the offense also. Look, partner, we might have another challenge this time. One if it’s early in the game. Absolutely. And so far, both coaches have been pretty sure about that. Miller gets that double team, gives right back to Plley. Jay Will bit on that shot fake and that left Plumbley wide open for the easy two. That’s a good look too by Brandon Miller as he was covered on that three-point shot by two defenders. And Isaiah Jones is going to get contact on the three as Hardenstein gave it to him with a through the legs behind him pass. And those are the kind of plays, Michael, that you’re not going to get for guys typically guys coming back not on two-way deals. And those are the kind of plays that you can have the confidence in in trying to execute. Well, if you think about this time last year when Hartstein, you know, was was first signed by the Thunder, who I don’t, you know, we didn’t know a lot about about this guy, you know, I knew about him, watching him in New York over the last couple of seasons, but I had no idea he was that good of a passer. I knew he was a good passer. I knew he was a good rebounder. I knew he could score inside. I I knew he’s going to have a great feel for the game. High IQ for a big man. Did not know he’s an exceptional passer. Okay, I’m just saying exceptional and you know when he does a, you know, through the leg pass like that, don’t don’t be shocked. Don’t be ooing and awe. That’s just another day at the office for that big man. Let’s check in with Nick. Guys, I talked to Isaiah and Joe about this dynamic between he and Isaiah Hartenstein. This is something that they continued to work on and continue to press throughout the course of last season. That only continued here into the off season and when guys got back together here in OKC. It’s again about deepening those relationships, finding ways to make sure that all of those actions are second nature. There’s a second nature action by Wallace. Anticipating the pass getting out on the break and laying it in. And he he turned on the afterburners. It’s one thing to tip that ball away, but that’s a 50/50 ball. And he ran it down, got to it, laid it up quickly. almost two steals a game did Kase Wallace just an absolute beast on the defensive end. J will had a no shin instead pulls up for the mid-range two. No good. As the ball works his way into the front court and is going to get fouled and he is going to go to the free throw line. Boy, this is just great range coming down. You saw he wanted. He’s had a couple of big plays like that in the playoff last year. He just comes up with a steal. Timely steal or a timely three-point shot. The length, the range, the anticipation. And that’s something that Mark Dangel has mentioned with Kase Wallace now going into year number three. He’s only going to become a better defensive player because he’s more familiar with the system. He’s more familiar with opponents. And but the saying that Mark Del likes to to drop is seeing the pictures and for Kase Wallace he has seen a lot as Wiggins they leave him wide open. So why not take the three? Got a little miscommunication again by the Hornets. They’ve had a couple of those already in this first half. So still in the top part of this second quarter. Can from the outside. That’s going to graze the rim and Wiggins already on the move the other way and a reach in foul is going to go against Charlotte. One of those young drafties for the Hornets. He’s got a nice solid draft class. We talked about it at the top of our broadcast. Take a good look at the man. He is a terrific shooter. Moves without the ball well. Step up your game this fall with Thunder youth basketball camp presented by Simple Modern. Open to kids ages 6 to 14. Spots are limited at okcfunder.com/fall camps to sign up today. Second one for Barnheiser. Barnheiser drafted 44. Caniple drafted four. [Music] So, Bill in there making good use of their draft capital with those two first round picks as well as two second round picks. Battle for the rebound. Plumbley. That is Mason Plumbley. He’s going to get fouled. And just the second team foul. you know, talking about the draft capital for the Hornets, I think they addressed some issues that they’ve had over the last couple of season. They’re really young. Uh they haven’t gone after any big free agents. They’ve just kind of powered through the draft pretty much the way the Thunder have done over the last three or four seasons. And they got a nice little base of young players. They just got to just got to continue to develop and stay on that development line. Got a young coach in Charles Lee who has championship experience as it looks like there’s going to be another challenge here could be possibly the head the neck and he’s shooting a jump shot we’re not calling that he’s shooting a jump shot how can a guy do that he’s shooting a jump shot it got so bad that when he was shooting his jump shot I would back up and and they would look at me what’s wrong with you says I’ve I’m not getting a broken nose. No, I’m not. I’m not going to get a bloody nose. Bill Clark. And there’s another guy named the Kimbe Matumbo he had to watch out for, too. Yeah, but you knew that the elbows were coming with the Kembbe. That’s the thing. That’s true. Carrite on a shot. Yeah. Matumbbo on a block shot. Yeah, that you knew that was coming. But again, he looked to get those elbows high. Some players not as subtle as others. In all fairness to him, when he gets his elbows, he’s 7 foot one. He’s already at your face. Yeah. So, you know, he’s naturally going to make contact with you. Look like there’s going to be a foul away from the ball as Isaiah Joe Plumbley will get called for the foul. for 24 years under Isaiah stand. There’s been so many stoppages to come back in here. 812 mark on the first quarter. Nice rest on the bench as Dort dribble there. Ball defending. Dor shot is a little bit short and cars right out to Lamelo Ball. They get just three shots, man. Steps into it from deep. No good. And Arstein trying to start the break on the quick outlet pass to Cruso. He does a good job of tiptoe rebounding, folks. You don’t always need to get in the air. Just get those arms straight up like he does. Look at that leg from SGA. It looked like for a moment Bridges might be able to recover coming out the screen, but Shay just released it way too high. He’s always so calm, cool, and collected with the basketball. He’s like a walk to me on that play. Oh man, nice move on the spin and scoops it home in the reverse. I think sometimes when you take five steps, the official don’t know what to do. They just say, “Okay, that may have been a rough as a Thunder.” Oh, they’re going to call it a two. Come on. It’s a deep two for Hartstein. He’s not going to get credit for the three. Well, I’m sure you know Sakus is looking at it. I was looking at it. Ball is loose on the deck. And man, I got to call a jump ball. That’s just going to be a kick ball. Oh, no. No. This his toes. He was 0 for 19 from three last year during the regular season. is somebody’s going to break his heart when he says that his toe was on the line. But I’ll take this. I’ll still take the two. [Applause] And man had the feet set in the corner. He’s got a good jump shot. He shows it there. And man’s got five points. Russo so good on those cuts and the dives. Had one earlier. Enable the first round pick trying to keep SGA in front of him. SGA this time passes out to an open door. Fires away. No good on the three and Gruso last man’s going to lay it up and Martel’s going to call the timeout as we are not yet to the mid. So, a lot of opportunity to get ready for opening night which will be on October 21st in this building against the Houston Rockets. Mark Dagnol say, you know, it’s a balance trying to experiment with new things, which the Thunder always like to do. That’s a play that we’ve seen a ton over the course of last year, Michael. That screen and that dive from Harkstein, SGA giving it right back to him and then the floater. Well, you got to give him something if you double SA coming out of a timeout. And talking about the regular season, Catch Thunder basketball live at Paycom Center. Single game tickets are on sale now for the 2526 season. Get yours today at okc.com/tick. [Music] Over for two at the line for Hartinstein. Man looking for more and he’s got more coming off the screen. Pulls up. Trey man starting to heat up here in the second quarter. That’s a nice looking play from him too in transition. He’s a guy that likes to get out in that open court. SGA sets it up and amidst all kinds of traffic just went up and gobbled that in for the LU. How about that nice look by SCA recognizing that that’s three straight triples by the Hornets finding some leverage on the offensive end with the three balls just wide open as that secondary defender was kind of hesitant to get out on him off that big screen that got hung up on Hardstein out front. I think SCA’s in a little bit of a rhythm already. Seven out of eight. LaMelo Ball fading away going to the first row with that three and Caruso ships crosscourt. See what Shay decides to do with the rookie defending on the back side. Quick spin move outside of Wallace off the catch. T by Caruso who then commits the foul. He got kind of caught in no man’s land. You talked about a guy that led the NBA in scoring. One of the things he was doing in that game with those 12 assists, 12 assists, just a total package. Had a careerhigh in assists last year over 6.7. Cano no good on the three. Caruso transition three, no good. and Wallace gonna track it down and bang it off the lane of Lego Canipple with plenty of time still on the shot clock. You know, that’s a sign of a great player when you make other people better. And that’s what guys like SGA has done is, you know, when he’s on the floor with the basketball, he attracts a lot of attention, but he’s also willing to do that. You know, just stay with the ball, stay with the play, he can score, he can pass, he can shoot. And, you know, we we talk about his scoring, but he’s underrated as a passer and a defender. Really, the numbers back it up. His willingness to give up the basketball. He can score when he wants to, but Willing passer really had to rely on his teammates. Thor step back had to beat the shot clock. No good. Get a little whistle and I believe it’s going to be out of bounds on Salon. Thunder will keep it. Looked like Salon had possession and goes back shoulders. The official right on third down the line. Oh, 13 turnovers in the first half by Charlotte. Dor got caught underneath. Had nowhere to go. Take it right back. That is turnover number 14. Harden still and the right handed finish falls off the rim. [Applause] Hard flows out on Canipple and he’s able to score. He got by Wallace. [Music] And it looks like Mark Deadall is going to want to set here. He calls out the offensive plays. The Thunder going to play in the half court. Shay trying to get it back up to Hornstein. There’s a turnover. Twoonone here. Miller gives it up. Dante got by Caruso. And after leaving leading by as many as 20 points, the Hornets with those threes that you referenced earlier, Michael, they’ve been able to cut down on that deficit. Well, the Hornets have done a good job. That’s what you want to do is get back to get some easy shot. I see that ball going to the basket, but they’ll give the Hornets credit. They’ve made good use of the three-point shot. They made good use of their transition game here in the bottom part of this second quarter. And there was the three ball by Miller. was 0 for three prior to that activities as well, but good to be back here. Thunder happened to be back home and coming out of the timeout, but the Hornets on a little bit of a run here. Caruso lost it and got fouled. He will go to the free throw line now with the Hornets in the penalty. Caruso It’s just so fun to watch him play, Michael, on a nightly basis a season ago. He he feels more and more comfortable at comfort here with last year being with the Thunder, but he was just such a critical component for that Thunder run. Well, you know, he’s one of those guys who, you know, you can put in the Kimri Williams conversation of a Swiss Army knife. He just does a lot of things well. You know, you need a three, he can give you a three. You need a good defensive play, he can do that. I tell you that in that second round against the Nuggets and his defense on Joic was unbelievable for at stretches. I mean, he was taking some hits, some shots, you know, to the soloex that officials weren’t calling and he just stayed right there. He’s such a gritty player and and has, you know, he has a strong offensive presence as well. really relied on his experience and that championship experience that he had with the Lakers. That championship season back in 2020 in the hot day with the put back on the offensive rebound [Music] once again trying to break down that Charlotte defense. Got inside, missed it with the left hand. Bit of a Come back here by the Hornets. Bridges and swiped away. Punched up to Caruso trying to beat the layup and in and there is that pesky Thunder defense forcing another turnover. How about the strip on Caruso just as we’re talking about him and Charlotte ball coming over on the back side. He was there got his hand on it and he was so good with the deflections a season ago. Now is that a block shot or is that a steal? Steal. Sometimes he does things, you know. so strategically you’re not really sure if it’s a steal or if it’s, you know, a block shot. Miller heating up a little bit. We talked about him missing most of last year. Only played 27 games a season ago for the Hornets at that after having that wrist surgery. Well, if you’re looking at what has got Charlotte back in this game, Michael, 10 threes here in the second quarter. And there’s another one. LaMelo Ball from the outside. And the Hornets climbing back in this game after the Thunder led by as many as 20. Little deep three as well. [Applause] Mark passed it up instead. It’s Caruso. High arcer for three. No good and the Hornets can get a two for one to close out this first half [Applause] as ball keeps that dribble alive. Good defender in Wallace and Lawless anticipated the pass. Russo’s got pressure on the backside. Dor’s going to take it himself. Slam Hall plus the foul. How about the speed of that break being busted up by Kase Wall lead to so many of those fast break opportunities [Music] as door to complete the three-point play. Eight and a half left here in this first half. Wallace that’ll disrupt the timing there. The double pull can’t even get across half court now. He’s got a he just banked it in.
