We’ll talk to Lily Zo about what’s on the line, what they have to prove, why the pressure is on, the players that are coming back, all that good stuff. Um, but since we recorded, um, we got both scared and then less scared about Brandon McManus. Matt Laflur said he was very concerned about Brandic Brandon McManus’s quad injury. Um, that was suffered in practice, not making any tackles in the game. That was something that was fetched about during the the Cowboys game. Um, he said after practice he he thinks he’ll he’ll kick on Sunday. We’ll see if he does. They brought in or they’re going to be working out kickers on Friday. whether or not uh they actually sign anybody. Maybe they sign somebody to the practice squad. We’ll see. It sounds like that’ll be fine. You hope this game does not come down to a field goal. So, there’s that. Uh but Rasheed Walker missed practice on Thursday or only worked inside. He was limited on Wednesday in pads. And so, practicing in pads, that’s a good thing. This is something to monitor here. keep an eye on Rasheed Walker’s status on Friday. If he practices in a limited fashion, that would be a good sign for him to go. Zack Tom has come through the week. He’s been limited all week, but he’s practiced, practiced in pads. Aaron Banks has been limited all week, but he practiced, practiced in pads, and then came out of the padded practice and practiced again. And remember, they had the extra practice because they practiced on Monday. So, if the offensive line, if Banks is back and Zack Tom is back, that allows Jordan Morgan to do what we were asking on this show for them to do, and that is play him at left tackle. And you get you get a free shot. You don’t even have to have him rotate because he can just come in and and do it. It’s kind of the ideal scenario other than the fact that Trey Hendrickson mostly lines up against the left tackle. Now, the Packers this year, interestingly, I was just looking at the these numbers. Pro Football Focus tracks this thing called island percentage, how often you are asked to block on an island. And the Packers last year and the year before were pretty comfortable letting Rasheed Walker block on an island. This year, not so much. In fact, Darian Canard has been on an island way more often than Rasheed Walker so far this year. Part of that is some of the players that they played, of course, Miles Garrett, Aiden Hutchinson, but Aiden Hutchinson mostly lines up on on the other side of the field. Um, or they move him all over. Like he’ll line up against whoever is the weakest point. He line up a lot on um Zack Tom in in week one, but they did move him around. Um, and so they’ve faced some some real fronts here. Dorren Armstrong has been one of the better, more productive pass rushers in the NFL. The Packers blanked him. They blanked Aiden Hutchinson. If Zack Tom is out there, this offensive line is going to be really good. It’s a It’s a great opportunity then to see what Jordan Morgan has against a defense that is not very good. Just straight up not very good. And they’re going to play a lot of single high coverage. The Packers are the number one offense against single high coverage in the NFL by EPA. And the Packers have seen mostly loaded boxes this season. 51% light box percentage. That’s one of the lowest numbers in the NFL. The Bengals play 71% light boxes. So they they come from that college system, a lot of 335s, that kind of stuff where you’re like, you’re going to see single high, but still somehow a light box because they’ve got a lot of light people on the field, a lot of defensive backs on the field. I think you’re going to see the running game get going here. And this might be the start of Rasheed Walker getting Wally Pipped here. We’ll we’ll see. Let’s go to our conversation now with our palo. Joe Flacco screwed up our timing. So did the Brewers and the Cubs, but she’s here now. It’s Friday. Lily Zho from Fox 6 in Milwaukee late this week, Lily. So, Z, you doing? Uh, Peter, I’m a little tired, but that’s okay. That’s the price we pay for being on the sports grind. Um, but I am doing well outside of being tired. Um, so with this news, also surprised, but how you doing? I’m I’m uh I’m I’m good. it it not as not as tired I think as me personally anyway as our our pal Brandon Snyder who uh does our locked on Brewers postcast and then had to go right into our locked on Packers squad show on Wednesday night. So like you know on on it for the the game and then had to do all that postgame coverage and then switch gears and do Packers stuff. Um and then on short notice our our coach Jeff Jagazinski couldn’t technical difficulties it was a mess. Anyway um everything is short notice for Joe Flacco this week. Lily. Um, we’ve had a couple days now to marinate over this and I still kind of can’t get over the fact that they traded for this guy on Tuesday, he shows up on Wednesday and is going to start on Sunday. And like Malafor said it, he’s never seen he can’t couldn’t think of at least anything even remotely comparable, at least in his time in Green Bay. This is this is wild stuff. Yeah, because ideally when you’re facing a quarterback, unless it’s a backup, you’re not trading that guy mid-season to another team, you know? So, I it can happen, but I mean, as long as I’ve been covering the Packers, I don’t think it’s happened to them. Um, but yeah, how wild this week. It’s just the fact that the lone Browns win thus far came from Joe Flacco versus the Packers. Lone Packers loss. And now he might get a chance to do it again, but the Packers don’t want that to happen. But, I mean, listen, credit to Joe Flacco. He’s a veteran. He’s been there before. He’s played for so many years. And while it’s gonna be a quoteunquote new system, new players, all that. I mean, it’s still just the fundamental game of football, it’s just football. But that being said, the Packers are hoping this time around against Flaco looks a little bit different than their loss to the Browns. Do you think they need to win convincingly on Sunday? I do. I really do. I think again, if they want to be in the narrative of we want to be good enough to win a Super Bowl, they’ve got to win this game big and they’ve got to win it convincingly. They’ve got to get takeaways. number one. That hasn’t happened yet. And this team, this Bengals team is is turnoverprone. Granted, last couple of them are by Dylan Gabriel, uh or Dylan Gabriel, uh Mr. Browning. Sorry. Browning. Yep. No, Mr. Browning. So, all these Ohio teams, they they they run together. It’s okay. Yeah, it’s been a long week. Sorry, guys. Um and so Mr. Browning’s not playing. Um but again, this is a really good opportunity for the Packers defense to really get back on track and show what they look like and why they look like the team they did back in week weeks one and two. So, I’d say you have to generate turnovers and I think this offense has to continue to play at a high level and and maybe this is a game where they can finally get the offense and defense back on track playing at a high level together and play four quarters of football that’s really been missing the last couple weeks. There was this great stat Steve Palazolo uh who works for um I don’t know if he’s at the 33rd team now or or or what, but used to be a pro football focus. I think that’s where most people know him from that currently rostered Bengals quarterbacks have thrown 13% of all interceptions that have been thrown in the NFL this season. That’s Joe Flacco and Jake Browning. So to your point, like this was supposed to be turnover team, right? That was everything Jeff Hafley preached, punching the ball out, getting the turnovers. This was a turnover defense last year. You are you are like the queen of Packers turnover Twitter. Um and and they they have not been coming through for you, Lily. They haven’t. I mean, I’m they’re making me look bad, right? my my good karma, good juju lottery is out the window cousin these guys. I’m kidding. Um they just haven’t had the opportunity yet to get them or when they have they haven’t capitalized. So again, I think this is a great week to do it. Joe Flacco’s not bringing the Browns defense with him um to Cincinnati. And so you have to hope that first of all you can get after him with four guys, rattle him, make him kind of look, you know, just just look scared out there and then just come through offensively and put up enough points where, you know, you can kind of cruise late in the game. But it’s it’s got to be a week they can get turnovers. I think that’s key number one. Turnovers are always essential to to winning and and any coach will tell you that. I think starting fast, too. Like if you go up 14 nothing and you make this that was what they couldn’t do against the Browns, right? The Browns defense kept the Packers in check. If Matthew Golden stays in bounds, maybe it’s a little different. They go up 17, you know, nothing or 173 I think it was. Like those kinds of opportunities, you can’t let those go by, right? Like that’s when Matt Lafur says we haven’t played a complete game. That’s the kind of stuff that he means. If you can make this team onedimensional, they’re kind of already onedimensional. They cannot run the ball at all anyway. um it it only compounds your advantage defensively and the Packers just haven’t quite been able to do that. The complimentary football, situational football of let’s put these teams away. That that that is the piece and you and I have talked about it on the show. That piece hasn’t been there. That’s really just execution. Yeah. And and we can say as as good as those wins were weeks one and two, those were games that they had chances to put both the lines and computers away early and couldn’t get it done. So again, you’re you’re playing a team that’s not really on the c same caliber as those two teams. So what’s going to prevent you from getting out to a fast start and putting up points and putting this game away? It’s yourselves. And so the Packers have been beating themselves. And I think everyone says this, they’re good enough to beat anybody. They’re also good enough to beat themselves. And they’ve done it the last couple weeks. So you’re right. If they can get up to a fast start, compound some points, and really put it out of reach, that’s a winning recipe. But we haven’t seen it yet. So maybe this Sunday is the difference and we finally see that. More with Lily Zhao coming up here on locked on Packers. They they have not played well in these games where they have been clearly favored. They were clearly favored in Dallas, clearly favored in Cleveland. Um, this 14 and a half point is a different thing. Like, you know, Pro Football Focus has this as the worst team in the NFL by their grading. Um, I don’t I think the roster is pretty bad. Um, and and we think of Jamar Chase and T. Higgins and Trey Hendrick Anderson and we go, “Yeah, this is a good roster.” It’s not. It’s really not. after those three guys like it is really not that good a roster but that that brings a different kind of pressure Lily we talked about this a little bit last week or two yeah last week where there is a different kind of pressure when you’re the heavy favorite to go out and perform and we’ve seen this over the years some of the latestage Aaron Rogers teams were like this even when they were winning 13 games they would they would play down a little bit to their opponents they’d win but they’d win 26-21 against a team that they were 10-point favorites against and I don’t know if that’s a Matt Laflur thing You know, you could have said it was an Aaron Rogers thing, but now it seems like there this is still happening where they’re they’re not playing their best every single week. And I don’t know what to attribute it to at this point. Yeah, I don’t either. And and we can still say this as a young team that maybe they still have to go through these things to kind of get through it, but again, they they’ve been through it for a season plus already. And so you kind of have to figure is it just is it just your mental mindset going into a game being like, “Oh, we’re we’re quote unquote so much better on paper. we don’t really have to play our agame and we’re still going to win big. It’s not the case. I mean, they saw that against the Browns. Um, and so, yeah, that is very interesting that they can’t just blow out a team. You can’t just win 49 to three and call it a day. It just it has to be difficult on some fronts. I know a lot of Packers fans probably have PTSD thinking, you know, games like Tommy Devito, he goes off and has a big A. That’s a game that you don’t want to have happen. You just want them to play the football the way that they’re capable of playing and they should be fine. But you’re right, they just haven’t handled the pressure of being really heavy favorites really well this season. The Tommy Devito example is such a good one because remember what preceded that? They they go into Detroit, they beat the Lions who were rolling at that point and then they play Kansas City, the defending Super Bowl champs at home. They win that game and then they go to New York and they just lay an egg. It’s almost one for one, Lily. Even the Lions in there, it’s almost one for one what we saw in the first three weeks of the year. They play two great games against highquality opponents and then against a clearly inferior opponent. They just don’t show up. We talked about this feeling like a more mature team in the preseason. Is this a a maturity thing? Is it a leadership thing? Is it a culture thing, a coaching thing? Like what do you think we we can attribute this most to if you were going to put your finger on it at some By the way, if the Packers knew what the problem was, they’d fix it. They obviously don’t. Yeah. I I don’t know if it’s a mentality thing. You know, guys will of course say, you know, we came in focused. But if you’re having a bunch of pre- snap penalties, if you’re getting flags up and down the field, that doesn’t really equate to my mindset was was completely focused going into this game where again I should be winning by 14 and a half points. Um yeah, I I think that was we we’ve seen it for years where it just maybe there’s just a little bit less focus than what they should be putting out there, but I’m not sure what really to attribute it to. Again, this is a team that is young, but they play together for for quite a while now. So, I don’t know games like they’ve been through it, right? And so, you know, is it a a season where you want every week you want to play contenders, so you’re raising your level of play each week? Maybe. But that’s just not the case with the schedule. So, I mean, maybe there’s something they can do mentally to be like, “Okay, we’re playing the Eagles this week.” I don’t know. But you can’t come out unfocused against this this Bengals team. And you’d like to say, you know, Jordan Love, you’re the leader. You got to do it. But even when Aaron Rogers and the Packers were winning MVPs, they’d have those weeks where it’s like, can you just blow this team out? Like 2019, I know Rogers didn’t have a great season that year, but he’s still Aaron Rogers. We saw 2020, 2021, he was still capable of taking over games. And yet those teams consistently let teams back into games in the second half. They But they I I don’t think that team was as talented as this one. I think this might be um you correct me if you think I’m wrong on this. I I think this might be the most complete talented team that Matt Lafleur has had. They don’t have the elite talent that they had in 2020 and 2021, but I think this is the most complete team that they’ve had. And so that makes this even more concerning. And when I start to hear the Matt Laflur criticisms, I have to be honest, Lily, I am starting to take them more seriously than I ever have. Precisely because every week it is we haven’t played a full game. I got to take responsibility. It’s the same lines from Matt Laflur. What did you learn in self scout? We haven’t played a complete game this five years in a row, Lily, that this is the the thing that Matt Laflur is saying. And I’m I’m starting to wonder about it. I have to be honest. Yeah. I I think, you know, if Matt Laflur had fixed this issue, obviously that’s not the line he’d be saying, but he’s not going to he’s never going to go out there and bash a player. That’s just not the coach he is. Um I I know he is frustrated because I he knows the talent he has. I think you’re right. I think this is top to bottom offensively, defensively. If you look at the pure caliber of talent on both sides of the football, special teams aside, um it’s a really really good roster and so you would expect that you’re going to be getting, you know, your agame every week from this team, but for whatever reason it’s the offense plays well one week, the defense doesn’t and vice versa and then you have a two-1 and one record going into the by-week. Um, and so yeah, at some point it’s got to be on the coach to say, “Listen, we got to do some sort of reality check, some sort of self-reflection to say, what is the issue, and why are we not playing up to our ability?” Because, okay, we’re we’re 6 weeks into the season now. If we’re not turning things around now, it’s going to be a little bit too late for us to do that. And so, I I think this game against the Bengals will be a very good indication of if they can turn things around. If they come out looking sloppy at home, mind you, and they come out and have a bunch of penalties and cannot put this team away, that’s not a really good sign. But I’m gonna be optimistic and say that they turn things around and they look like the team that we think they can be. I think so, too. I think this is a game I’ve been saying all week. I think they’re going to win this game like 3114. I think it’s going to it’s going to be that kind of blowout. I know I predict predicted that against the Browns, too, but part of what happened against the Browns was that offensive line just did not play well at all. And even some of the good players did not play well at all. Um, but they need their good players back. Lily, Zack Tom practiced in pads on Wednesday. Um, Aaron Banks practiced in pads on Wednesday. That’s a really good sign as this team uh moves forward as we record this. Um, no word on on uh the designations for Thursday, but getting those two guys back, I just I feel like that solves so many problems for this offense because we saw in weeks one and weeks two, even with just Aaron Banks out there, like even with just four of your five, that just it it makes everything easier for this offense that hasn’t hit full stride yet, which is scary because they just scored 40 points. Um, and they they’re not at full stride yet. Yeah, I I think the offensive line is key. I think getting Zack Tom will be the stabilizing force. Yeah. That they need on this offensive line. We saw how good they could be against the Lions before Tom got injured. Just how that line protected and gave Jordan Love so much time. So I think Zack Tom comes back that’s that’s going to stabilize the offensive line. Aaron Banks as well. Anthony Develop not back just yet. Um but you need Zack Tom back. I I think he’s that glue for the offensive line right now to keep them clicking at at the rate that they need to be clicking at. But you’re right. I if they can’t protect Jordan Love, it’s going to be a long day for this Packers offense moving forward. But if they can just protect him and just get these guys back healthy, this is a really good offense. And mind you, Christian Watson, he’s in the back. He’s dangling. Yeah, he look I I I don’t think he’s going to play this weekend. No, just because I think this team is like wildly cautious and I frankly I don’t think he should. If he does, it’ll be like 10 snaps, something like that. Still more with Lily Zhao next on Locked on Packers. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win. That’s right. Pick a bet, put down five bucks, and if it hits, you’ll unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. It makes watching football even more exciting when you got a little something on the line. The Packers are 14 and a half point favorites against the Cincinnati Bengals. Yes, by the way, still. And I I have taken the Packers and the over cuz I think there’s going to be points in this game. I I I predicted um 3114. Now, that would hit the over barely. Right now, the over is 44 a 12, but if you took the Packers uh to cover and with the over, you’re getting two and a half almost to one. If you just pick them to win with the over, you’re getting plus odds just to win. They’re they’re minus 1150 to win. Just to win and the over. Now, if you put the them to win and you can’t the win and the under, it’s basically even odds. So, at that point, you might as well just take the under because the under is minus 118. But the minus and the over plus 110. I think I got it at even better odds earlier in the week. So, still something that I would consider doing. So, what are you waiting for? or visit FanDuel.com to download the FanDuel app today and get started. Zach Tom is the key. I I think you’re right about that. I I’ve heard a lot of fan consternation this week, Lily, and and um you know, that’s kind of part for the course here um on social media and all that stuff, but um the second half has people worried about this defense. Are you second half of the season? Second half of the Cowboys game. I’m sorry. It’s been two weeks in football, so it’s confusing, but in my head, I was thinking about the Cowboys game and did not relay that to you. That is okay. I was like, well, it is tough at the end of the season. Um, it is concerning. Um, again, we have seen how good this defense can be. But again, you give credit to Dak Prescott. I mean, he was playing out of his mind. He’s still playing out of his mind. So, you take that into account as well. You’re not going to be facing a Dak Prescott like quarterback every single week. That being said, there was barely any pressure. They couldn’t generate any takeaways and they were the Cowboys were without their number one receiving threat in Sidi Lamb and they still tore apart the secondary. Granted, there was really no pressure on Dak Prescott and they found two offensive linemen. They couldn’t get that pressure. That’s a problem, right? That is a problem. And and you know, even when he was facing pressure, Dak was still making crazy throws um in high pressure situations like in overtime. So, it is concerning, but but listen, I think the secondary has reaped the benefits of what the defensive line has been able to do early in the year, and then when it kind of finally was their turn to hold serve, it it looked tough against Dallas. And so, is that the case this week? Can they hold serve against Jamar Chase and T Higgins? Because, you know, Joe Flacco’s throwing that ball up there and and saying, “Guys, go get it.” Yeah. F it. Jamar down there somewhere for sure. Um, Matt Lafleur said they’re not making material changes to the special teams. They’re not going to practice it anymore than they do otherwise. Um, and I’ I’ve talked to to, you know, some some people about this, um, including our our Jeff Jagazinski, and he was like, you can’t really practice field goal block all out because there’s so many starters on both sides. Like, it’s just you it’s so tough to do. Um, are you buying the well, we’ve made some personnel switches and we feel good about it now? Do you think that’s enough? I don’t know. I don’t know what else they can physically do. I mean, it’s it’s a team that’s had back-to-back weeks of block of kicks blocked. It doesn’t happen to every other other team in the NFL, you know, outside of a couple. So, what are they doing wrong? Up this year, but it’s still a weird to have it happen in backto-back weeks like that. Yeah. Correct. Correct. And and so you talk about the reshuffleling of, okay, clearly didn’t work this way. Where where are we going to move this guy? Are they confident in their ability to block up front for for an extra point or a field goal? Um I I don’t know what they can do at this point if it’s already not working. Again, it it should be a smooth operation. Everyone kicks. So, what is the issue this year that’s making it more tough for the special teams unit? I’m not sure. But again, if they got to go back to who they were, you know, putting out there early in the in the season when no kicks were getting blocked, I’d say go back to that cuz whatever was working the last two week weeks was not working clearly. Yeah, I I I think Elton Jenkins, who was who was put out there after the the Cowboys block, um you just have to have your best offensive lineman out there. I mean, it’s just really tough. Bones Fossil, the special teams coordinator in Tennessee, pointed out it’s the offense is at a disadvantage just the way that the alignments work. you have four to block six and that’s that’s just really a tough ask. You need your best blockers out there and the fact that like Luke Musgrave is not much of a blocker. He’s kind of a man without a without a home right now, Lily. Like this was someone that the Packers were really excited about and they just they can’t find a role for him anywhere on this team. That that is is pretty disappointing. You look at that 2023 draft class, we were so excited about it in the moment after that first year. And I don’t know, none of those guys have really taken the kinds of steps forward that we thought they could. Yeah. And that’s what I think is unfortunate for Luke because again, when Tucker was Tucker Craft was out with injury, we’ve seen how good he can be, but he hasn’t really been featured. Um, and that is tough to see because I think easy to forget he was the starter, the day one starter as a over Tucker Craft. Correct. I think you know and then of course Tucker Craft came back and you know we all know he’s a really good player so kind of supplanted Luke Musgrave in terms of that tight end one position but you got to find some role for him because you know on the Packers if you’re not blocking you’re not blocking well you’re not really playing if you’re not a featured skill player. So that’s a good point. Where do you put them? Yeah. uh there’s a reason that um you know they’re they’re playing you know Ben Ben Sims is mostly a special teams but then you have John Fitzpatrick and he and he’s someone that is is out there and you’re kind of like why is he out there more than Luke Musgrave and the answer is because Luke Musgrave struggles as a blocker. Um this this does feel like the more I dig into the matchups lately the more I’m I’m fairly confident that this game is not going to be close. Um, and I think to your point, it it has to be um I ask you this every week. If that is in fact the case, if they are able to get the the convincing win that we think they need, uh, who is the differencemaker? That’s a really that’s a great question. I am going to say, as much as I would love to pick someone on offense, which I feel like that’s kind of the case every single week, I’m going to say Micah Parsons. I feel like this is the week where you know Joe Flacco is new in the system. They should not be able to block you. I think you go go out there and get a couple sacks. A lot of people have been saying, “Oh, his stats aren’t up to par.” Again, if you’re a stat chaser, that’s not what Michael Parsons has been valued for early in the year. I think you go out there and you get Joe Flacco a couple times and I know he said that quote of like, “I I really want Joe Flacco. I think this is the week he gets him.” Yeah. Said he hasn’t he hasn’t had him and he needs him. He needs him. It was Yeah, it was it was quite the quote. I appreciate it. All right, Lily. We will we’ll talk to you next week. Hopefully, uh normal time and hopefully talking about a Packers win. We’ll talk to you then. Thanks, Peter. All right. Thanks to Lily for joining the show. Awesome to talk with her as always. Um we’ll be live on Friday. We have our squad show if you missed it. We were a little later because of the Brewer game. We had a great time. Coach had some technical difficulties. We were unable to make that all work out. He should be back though for after the game. Um, and we’re going to have a great time. So, 30 minutes with me after the game and then 60 more minutes with Brandon Snide, Jeff Jagazinski, and me after the games on Sunday. It’s a late afternoon game, so it’s going to be a fun time.
