We hadn’t seen any Giants pitchers play in this AFL season yet two games in, but three games in, well, we got all five of them in one game…seriously. Unfortunately, the pitchers were not at their best for the most part. That said, Parks Harber did do very well, getting on base four times and notching his first home run of the AFL season in his second game. The only Giant to not play today was Maui Ahuna. Plus, some unusual weather news for this weekend, and just random bits of Arizona Baseball trivia that somehow were vaguely relevant. Am I trying to get post views? Honestly, no, post views don’t get me karma or money or anything….but since Reddit’s continually telling me how many views I get, if it helps, it helps, right?
Scottsdale: Glendale Desert Dogs 13, Scottsdale 7
Giants Prospects to Spotlight:
- 1B Parks Harber: 2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (1), 1 SB (1), 1 HBP – Harber was one of the Scottsdale offensive stars on a rough pitching night (see below), with the team’s only home run, unfortunately in the 9th inning with the game far out of reach.
- SP Ryan Murphy: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K – A rough fall debut for the 2020 draft pick coming back from injury. Murphy only got into eight games this season, with a 5.59 ERA between Low-A and Double-A.
- RP Juan Sanchez: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR – Sanchez followed Murphy in the second, allowing two of his runners in on a home run, though he did strike out every batter he got out.
- RP Jose Perez: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 2 WP – The 22-year old Perez missed all of three seasons, and only pitched ten games this season for a 5.00 ERA across the DSL, ACL, and Low-A…
- RP Ricardo Estrada: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K – Estrada had a 2.10 ERA in 22 games across the ACL and Low-A.

Schedule & Weather Note
Look, baseball games getting cancelled by hurricanes aren’t exactly new.
But in Arizona????????
So, something the Arizona Fall League was doing this season was using the first two Saturdays of the season to do Triple-Header events.
Next week, there’ll be a triple-header at Goodyear Ballpark…because, um, why else would anyone go there? There’s no AFL team there. But this Saturday, October 11th, the original schedule was to have a Triple-header event at Tucson.
This is notable since Tucson used to be a Spring Training city…but, like, too far man. You think it’s hard getting to Surprise? Tucson was a nightmare. It’s also a twice-failed Triple-A home, formerly of the Tucson Sidewinders (one of the kind-of-descendants of the Phoenix Firebirds), and later the temporary home when San Diego’s attempt to put a Triple-A team in Lake Elsinore failed, so Tucson had a stadium they could play in, until they found a new home: The El Paso Chihuahuas.
Anyways, the AFL had a Triple-header event scheduled for Tucson for this Saturday…but the incoming Hurricane Priscilla from the Pacific, which will be at its peak in central Arizona on Saturday, has caused the AFL to cancel the games in advance. Flash floods are a true danger in Arizona, not exactly known for being able to geographically handle large sudden amounts of rain…and having a lot of buses and personnel and fans on the road on I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson for that triple-header would’ve been potentially disastrous. There’s a good chance games on Friday and Sunday could also be lost.
So there you go…Arizona Hurricane cancellations for baseball.
Fun fact…the SF Giants’ old Scottsdale minor league camp at Indian School Park…the reason they could use that land was that it was a floodplain for events like this, and all the equipment on the fields had to be made so they could break away easily in the case of a flash flood. One of the many reasons for the Giants to invest in Papago Park when they could.

Thanks for the update.
Definitely pulling for Parks Harber and should be one of the more interesting guys in Richmond next year. Probably not the most dynamic athlete, but just don’t recall the Giants having a big “lumbering” guy in their system. He’s already listed at 6′ 3″ / 225lbs. Belt was still a skinny guy at 24.
There’s a guy named Johanfran trying to make it to San Fran?
