New York Jets at Miami Dolphins Postgame Show | NFL | Week 4 | Jets Overtime

Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Welcome in to Jets Overtime presented by SiriusXM. Caroline Hendershot, Quincy Anuna in studio. With me, we’ll hear from Eric Allen. Down in Miami, the Jets drop to the Dolphins 27-21. Quincy, what was your initial takeaway from this game? Uh, it was a rough one again. I think this week again for the second week in a row, the Jets started off really slow. We saw something a little bit towards the end. We saw that great touchdown from Garrett Wilson, but overall, you can’t win the game when you have three turnovers and 13 penalties. It’s going to slow you up. It’s rare that ever results in a win for you. And that’s exactly what happened today. It felt like a game where they were, you know, they were very aware of it because I heard a lot of players say this already postgame. They were shooting themselves in the foot and it was a lot of their own mistakes and I think that is maybe the hardest thing for a player to swallow. Would you agree? Yeah, definitely. I mean, when you feel like you can beat a team and you continuously shoot yourself in the foot, when you continuously make mistakes, mental mistakes, right? We can go back to the to the fourth quarter punt, right? Where you catch it within your 10 yard line. You’re not supposed to back up at all. You know that you also fumble the ball three times. you know, all those things are easily fixable and things that you know week by week that these aren’t what you’re supposed to do and you continue to make these mistakes. Uh I know coach AG’s upset about it, the teammates are upset about it and this is something that you have to find a way to fix because you can’t win games in this manner. Yeah, 100%. And I know it’s like a difference because obviously they lost to the Bills, but that felt like a different kind of loss. This game felt like it was within reach and it was fairly close within the entirety of the game. Okay, let’s look at a little bit of our scoring summary to get a feel of how this game really kind of unfolded. So, it all started with Miami kicking this field goal. That was the first scoring point. They held them to a field goal. So, that was pretty solid to start off with. Don’t you agree, Q? Yeah, of course. And then obviously they had the fumble and then this was a great catch by Darren Waller. Got some missing football and unfortunately you end up have an opportunity where you can stop him on fourth fourth down and you don’t do that. Yeah. And then we ended up seeing another field goal. So, that was Nick Folk. We then see Dolphins another Darren Waller touchdown. So he was having himself a game and this was an unbelievable scramble by Justin Fields, but it shouldn’t have to come down to that, right? No, but I mean special players doing special things. I’m happy that he was able to come back and do this. It felt good for him, felt good for the team. I know he had his confidence back because, you know, after missing a week and not really having the showing that you wanted against the Bills, you get an opportunity to show this is what I can do as an NFL player. He had a pretty solid day outside of the fumble and this was a great show. Yeah, that was a 43 yard rushing uh touchdown by uh Justin Fields himself. So, that was pretty crazy. And then, you know, again, we see Devon Han get that football or get that touchdown. And then we get Nick Folk back getting the points on the board for the Jets, but it’s still it’s making it the you know, the points are just adding up for the Dolphins. So, it was kind of getting out of hand there. Absolutely. They were they each time they were able to get some great scoring drives. This is another great catch by Garrett Wilson. just a good job of going up with two hands and then you know the two-point conversion as well. They did their best to stay in the game but unfortunately just too many mistakes like we talked about and it was close this is the third game that it’s been a loss in a onescore outcome. So is it just those kinds of penalties and turnovers? Is it those small things that prevent a one-sore game? Yeah, absolutely. I think when you look back at the film you’re going to realize that this is a game that you could have won. Again, we talk about things that you do that put yourself out of the game, but I think watching the game over, they’re going to realize that there’s so many small things, small details. And that’s what the game is. It’s really a detailed game. When you when you find out how to to make the right steps, make the right decisions. You can make yourself have better games. And these are the games that show you that you really are a better team than your record shows. Unfortunately, as a fan, when you watch it all in totality, you’re like, man, this is not a good team right now. And this team has to find a way to get out of this hole that they’re in. 13 penalties for 101 yards and three turnovers. How do they fix something like that on a short week nonetheless when the Cowboys who just put up 40 points as we all watched uh yesterday are coming to town? Well, it’s going to be a lot of ball drills, a lot of fumble drills, a lot of keeping the ball high and tight, right? We talked about it. We talked about it over and over again with a guy like Derrick Henry who’s had three straight weeks of fumbles, right? This is another team that’s going to have to figure out how do you keep the ball in your hands because they can’t give this ball away three times and each time the the the Dolphins find a way to make them to punish them for it. I know. And it’s and it’s even more frustrating because these are the preventable things that were stressed during training camp and AG I think was very adamant in his postgame press. We’ll hear from him in a little bit that these are things that they can fix and they know that they will fix. However, let’s go check in with Eric Allen who’s on the ground in Miami. All right, Q. We are going to do a new little segment here called turning point. You’re going to tell me what the turning point was for whether it’s a win or a loss for the Jets for for the team that came out on top and what really that was the momentum change of the game. So, what was your turning point for this week’s game? Yeah. So, obviously the field the turnovers really changed the game, but I think the biggest one was that one coming out of half, right? You’re talking about a 10-3 game. You have an opportunity to really shift the co shift the whole momentum of the game, make it a 10-10. And unfortunately, you fumble the ball coming right out of half and then the Dolphins take it back and score a touchdown. That now makes it 17-3. You’re now in a in a deficit trying to figure out how you can catch back up. You score a touchdown, they score a touchdown, but then they score another touchdown after that and just continue to widen the gap. Does can you feel something like that on the sidelines when something like that big of a change happens on the field? Yeah, I mean I think it takes the air out of the game really because now you’re coming out of halftime hoping that you can bring this momentum into the game. You you talked about everything. You figured out how you want to game plan this team. You see what they’re doing and you want to go out there and make those changes and immediately the balls fumbled and now you have to figure out, okay, how can we kind of catch back up. All right. Well, let’s hear from head coach Aaron Glenn and his thoughts after the game and what he had to say about the Jets performance. Uh, when it comes to the game today, uh, very disappointing. Um, very disappointing and there’s no way way you can win any game with 13 penalties and three turnovers. It just can’t happen. Um, but what we have to do is go back to work. You know, we have to go. That’s the only way that we Jets football is back at Metife Stadium for week five as the Jets face off against the Cowboys on October 5th at 1 p.m. presented by Atlantic Health System. Get your seats now at nyjets.com/tick. All right, before we go into a little teleustration by Q, what did you think of Aaron Glenn and his thoughts? Now, I will say I don’t think we heard it in that clip, but he did say something that I found fairly interesting. He said, “Before you can win games, you have to learn how to not lose games.” Is that just kind of another reflection of what we’ve been saying of the small things? Yeah, absolutely. I think it also goes to the coaches as well because you talk about something in the first half, the Jets were getting beat on the blitz for majority of the first half. They couldn’t figure out how to how to keep these guys from getting to the quarterback, creating pressure, and then on the defensive side, they could not stop playing man. They weren’t able to stop the crossers. The crossers were beating them up. They finally switched the zone and bluffed some of the blitzes that they had, figured it out in the second half, but unfortunately they start they started too slow. Yeah, I think that was something that we both we talked about off air when we were watching the game. We said, “Okay, so they’re starting to change.” Like they would get into position looking like they would play man and then they would drop into zone coverage right when the ball was snapped. So that was good for them and there were positives. Now I know everyone gets mad when we say that there were positives in loss, but there were some and you you actually teleustrated a couple of them. So, why don’t you show us some of those film breakdowns that you have for us and give us a little bit of, you know, nice things that the Jets did this year. Yeah, definitely. There was definitely some good things. So, I can’t wait to show you guys. So, on this first play, we’ve got Bree Hall. He did some good things today. The run game was actually really excellent today. Honestly, they just had some they just missed some of their opportunities, put themselves in a hole, and weren’t able to really show exactly how good the run game could have been, but it really kept them in the game for most of this first half. On this one right here, you’re going to see them zone off the backside and bring Mason Taylor in motion. The motion was not doing well in the beginning, but they found a way to make it work on this play. You got a kick out from Mason Taylor, a down block to the linebacker, and then a nice play from Josh Reynolds to block the safety. Those are one of the big plays right here. And then watch Breece Hall’s vision to find the gap and then he gets to do what he does, get those extra yards for his team. A great first down run for him. Now on the second play, man, this is I mean the best receiver on the team, one of the best receivers in the league. He’s going to run a nice out and up right here and it’s a good job because they know that the play prior he had gotten open. So they said, “Hey, listen Justin, make sure you get this ball to your playmaker.” And he did just that. Gave him opportunity. That’s all you need is just to give him a little bit of space. And he goes up and gets the ball. One thing I want to show for the young receivers out here, anytime you go for the ball, the hands together. This is extremely important. You make it so difficult for the DB to knock it out, but this is strength. He’s a smaller guy, but he’s so strong here. Brings it down regardless of whoever is in his face and then gets the two feet in. Just a great play by your star receiver. That is an insane catch. I’m watching it back now as you were pointing it out. The two hands, he has a hand fully through both of his hands as he’s catching. Garrett Wilson doing the most athletic things and making it look so easy. It’s not easy. Breeze Hall though, he had 14 carries for 81 yards. They did talk about when we were listening to the press conference, not forcing it to Garrett because they were running the ball well. So, what is that balance with this offense? And that’s exactly it. Figuring out that balance. I mean, you talk about a team where they wanted to come into it being a play action pass, but they’re actually one of the lowest play action pass teams in the NFL right now. They have to figure out a way to get that run game going so they can get back to that. Unfortunately, in this game, they weren’t able to get to Breeze because of some of the blitzes. They weren’t able to get that time. The second half, you saw them able to get the ball downfield to Gus Garrett Wilson a little bit more. You saw Mason Taylor getting in the game, right? So, he was able to spread the ball around, but it just took too long to figure out how to beat that. And they were able to get the uh the Dolphins to get out of that blitz that that was really causing them some problems. when you’re watching that, is that is is that just because you’re trying to figure out the play calling with while you’re reading that new defense and you’re kind of seeing what they’re giving you or is a little bit of trying to find Garrett when everybody knows you want to go to Garrett? Yeah, I think it’s a combination of both of those things, right? When you don’t have the time to get it to Garrett, it makes it challenging, but also not only do you have not have the time, but then he’s also being double some of the times. They’re bracketing him, right? They had some good coverage. Some other guys have to get open and this is something that we were worried about coming into the season was who’s going to make those plays. I think Mason Taylor is starting to build that confidence. He’s a guy that’s going to catch the ball and that’s what we know about him. So, it was a great job today just kind of show that he’s capable. Yeah, it’s definitely not what you want to hear as you’re entering the season of there has to be another wide receiver, too. Who’s going to step up and fill that void, but as you just mentioned, Mason Taylor really starting to kind of pick up steam? And it is only four games into the season, so he could really kind of go on a roll here. Let’s hear from quarterback uh Justin Fields and what he had to say to Babushin after the game. So many positives out of your team but then to come up short. So even though with an 0 and4 record, how are you guys dealing with the positivity of things you’re doing well and yet having no wins to show for it? I mean, yeah, like you said, we’re we’re we’re very close, but you know, it comes to a point to where you want to get over that hump and um that’s that’s that’s going to happen very soon. Like I said, we’re just shooting ourselves in the foot. Turnovers, penalties, uh in in crit critical situations and and that can’t happen. But like you said, there’s definitely uh positives to take away, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter without a win. But, you know, we know what what kind of team we are. We know what we’re capable of, and we’re just going to keep going and and and uh keep working. Yeah. to have a night where you declared an extra offensive lineman eligible multiple times. You were not making much of a mystery out of how you were going to try to win the game and you still ran for 200 yards in a game where you were down by a couple touchdowns late when the Dolphins knew that you were trying to run the ball. So, how about the ability to lean on that as this season goes on? Yeah, I mean, I thought the uh O line did a great job. I thought we were really able to do whatever we wanted on offense if I’m being honest with you. Like I said, it was just the turnovers that killed us. So, um, if we eliminate those, eliminate the penalties, then you know, the sky’s is the limit for us. So, yeah, Justin, thanks. Appreciate it. Appreciate you. All right, the NFL fan of the year contest presented by Captain Morgan is back and the Jets are looking to celebrate extraordinary fans who will represent the team at Super Bowl 60 in San Francisco. Visit nyjets.com/fan of the year to submit your nomination. Now, Quincy, we just heard from quarterback Justin Fields. He said something interesting, I thought of they just have to get over the hump. It sounds so simple, but what does that entail for a team like this? And I know we’ve kind of really beat a dead horse by saying, you know, correct the little things. Control what you can control, but is it as simple as just having one of those games where everything clicks? Yeah. I mean, I think the most difficult thing right now is that this team needs uh I hate to say this, but they need more patience. They need to figure out, okay, how can we figure this defense and this offense out? I don’t think they have a great GA grasp of it and that’s an unfortunate thing to think about four games into the season. But there some of these guys are making some mental mistakes that are due to them not fully understanding how the offense goes. We saw a few times in the first half where there were some penalties where they weren’t able to get lined up and back to back, right? So so bad that uh they had to stop doing motions and shifts. So I think one thing that they have to figure out is getting back to the basics, right? getting back to the details, the smallest details, because this offense can be great if you’re able to get those small details. Defensively, it’s the same thing. Last week, we saw with in coverage a lot of times they were getting beat on some coverages that were a little exotic. You know, sometimes getting to those exotic plays. You have to be able to do the base stuff first. They tried to do a lot of man coverage today, realized that the man coverage wasn’t working. They were getting beat on a lot of crossers. They switched to the zones. So, just finding out what you’re good at. I know it’s still early and this is the defense that they’re still putting in and offense they’re still putting in, but they have to figure out what they’re good at before they can start to do the extra stuff. And leaning on someone like that, Garrett Wilson always helps. Now, before we get to final thoughts and maybe look ahead a little bit on the Jets schedule, I want to know one thing that you think they can continue to build on from this game and then one thing that they need to improve specifically for the Cowboys coming to town. Yeah, I mean, the biggest thing is the offensive side, right? you you you had a lot of explosive plays. Um 400 yards of total offense is amazing, right? That’s what you want to see in a win. Unfortunately, it came in a loss, but uh no picks from Justin Fields. You come back your first game off of a concussion. You’re running the ball well. Uh a couple explosive plays from you. Not only the touchdown, but you also had a nice scramble in the first half. Um a nice deep ball to Garrett Wilson. So, these are all things that you can build off of. You got to see Mason Taylor. Um you saw Bree Hall 80 yards, 100 yards of allpurpose yards, right? So many great things that you can build off on the offensive side. I think these are things that you can go into with the Cowboys who just gave up 40 points and a lot of yards to the Packers and say, “Hey, listen. We are capable of making big plays. Let’s bring that into this game here.” And the Cowboys will be without one of their big wide receivers, CD Lamb. So that could be something that the Jets really take advantage of. Okay, before we end, I just want to hear a little bit of your final thoughts with this injured Jets defense because we did see Brillin Allen go down. We did see Michael Carter go down. Now, we don’t know the status of them, if they’ll come back up, but this Jets defense, they’ve been they’ve been a little bit inconsistent in just how they show up from quarter to quarter even. And there’s some really good plays that they make. And then there’s maybe a little bit of those miscues that we’ve been seeing that are mistakes that they could definitely clean up. They’re without a lot of their linebackers. That’s definitely a factor in this. But how do they really hone their their style of defense before the Cowboys come to town? Well, I think the biggest thing is they obviously miss Quincy Williams a lot, right? You’re talking about a guy that’s great side to side, a guy that’s going to be able to read those play actions, but also get back fast enough, right? You don’t have a guy that can move side to side like him. That speed is is irreplaceable, right? Yes, you have to find ways to make sure that you’re reading your keys and getting into those positions, right? Defensively, that’s a really tough thing to do, but they have to find guys that can make those plays because they also lost uh Marcelino as well, right? So, two guys on that defensive side that can make plays for you. Um and then after that, right, offensively, right, you’re losing um Brillin Allen, we have to see Isaiah Davis step up, right? So, these injuries are going to hurt and it’s a short week, so we don’t know if they’re going to be back, but I think guys have to step up. It’s a week toe league. you cannot think that um I’m never going to play. There’s always an opportunity for you. So, guys have to be ready. I think that’s another issue that the guys are having is that not everybody’s prepared, right? That’s how it looks on film, right? And I think the coaches will probably say the same thing. So, you know what you’re supposed to do. The coaches are telling you what to do. It’s time to get out there and do that. Yeah. And I I understand it’s a little bit of a younger team. You have a new head coach. You have a new offensive coordinator. There’s a lot of, you know, growth and learning that has to be done. It is only four games. I know it feels like the end of the world right now to maybe some Jets fans, but cool the Jets a little bit. I think there’s still plenty of season left. And speaking of which, we actually have the Jets schedule that we can show you because it’s it’s going to be a little bit of um a lot of flights for them coming up because coming up, they have the Dallas Cowboys at home, which is helpful. But then they turn around that next Monday and they leave for London because they’re technically a home game against the Broncos, but that will be in London. And so that is a little bit of a challenge for them there. But then after that, you get to see the Panthers at home. You go away to the Bengals and then you’re at your buy. So pretty quickly, you’re already at the buy with week nine. So that’ll come very quick and we’ll see what that uh record is for the Jets when we get to the buy. All right, last question for you. How do we get to see the Jets that we all saw in week one next Sunday? Yeah, I think the biggest thing is that even though we want to see this exciting offense and exciting defense, I think we got to keep it simple. You got all the players you need, you’ve got some talented guys, you’ve paid some talented guys, keep it simple. Go to the basics, make the plays that you need to make and and just take them. That’s it, right? Take the easy play. Don’t make it bigger than it has to be. Football is very simple. It’s just challenging because you make it too challenging. Yeah, most definitely. I mean, I can’t say that because I’ve never played it, but as someone who watches it, I can I think I can also agree with that. Now, we’ve also seen the Cowboys struggle here and there with the season 2, so we don’t know what version of the Cowboys will show up next Sunday. But thanks everybody so much for watching us on Jets Overtime presented by SiriusXM. The next time you’ll see us is for pregame central next Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Cowboys arrive at Metife Stadium. Thanks so much. We’ll see you then. [Music]
