Motor City Matchup
You’re watching Leaf’s Morning Tape with host Nick Alberto and former NHL Jay Roseill. The show starts now. All right, away we go for the Friday edition of Lease Morning Take presented by Bet 365. Nick Albera, Jay Roseill. Jay, I got a question off the top. How in the hell? We are three days into this NHL season. In fact, two days or no. So, so Tuesday. Yeah, we’re three days in. There are no games. No games in the NHL on this Friday. Can you explain that for me? I was wondering too. I was going to look for our 365 bet of the day and I am cruising through going where is the hockey on this app and there’s just nothing. That’s really weird to me on a Friday night early early season. I don’t know. Sometimes there’s some scratch head scratchers with the schedule, but I can’t uh I can’t put my finger on why that would be really bizarre. Uh I was looking forward to watching some hockey. We don’t even have some Blue Jays baseball to look forward to tonight, so maybe I’ll just hit the town or something like that. But uh nevertheless, a busy card on Thursday. Got our first look at a bunch of different teams. It’s always the same old story, man. Like Buffalo starts the year, they get stomped by the New York Rangers. Uh I think of note here in the Atlantic Division. We got Ottawa and Tampa go toe-to-toe and a good start for the Senators in the game. I took the over, so I was pumped about that. But a 5-4 final for the Senators. I saw that. I saw that both you guys had the the sends. Didn’t you have the sends like make winning the division or something? I do. I have that plus 750. Ah, little futures bet. Futures bet. Yeah. Well, I don’t know. I said years ago if I were, you know, there’s only a handful of guys I’d if you had a handful of guys to pick to start a franchise around, I think Brady to Chuck would be right up there at uh at some level as leadership and uh all these other qualities that have come I guess people are more aware of them now after Four Nations and all the attention those Tchuck brothers have gotten, but uh they are an up andcoming team. What who do you think’s You obviously think that Ottawa is going to be a lot more ready to do damage in this uh division than Montreal. Hey. Yeah. I I just think when you look at the sends and in general in the NHL, like every year there’s a team that surprises and wins a division. Like last year was the Washington Capitals. Nobody could have forecasted going into last year that Spencer Carbury and the Capitals are going to win the Metro Division, have that type of year. And I just look at Ottawa and granted that really wasn’t the story last night, but Lena Selmark is the big key for me. You can make that case for most teams in this league. If you can get a save and above par net mining, we’ll say, you’re going to be in a really, really good spot. And I look at that blue line, especially with Jake Sanderson ready to take that next step in his career up front. Um, and I just think it was maybe more so, Rosie, about the teams around them that really don’t need the division. I don’t want to say they don’t care about the division, but I think there’s a lot of teams in the Atlantic specifically who are prepping for long potential runs in the Stanley Cup playoffs. And whether you want to call it load management or whatever else you want to phrase it, I think they are pacing themselves, if that makes sense. I hear you. I hear you. I hear you. I uh I also want to look forward, we were talking uh with some buddies last night about say the Barov deal. What if he’s ready to go for the playoffs? like what what is that going to look like? Is that in stone? I know they kind of shoved that long term. That’s not going to you can’t do that anymore, right? You can’t just load up at the deadline then activate Barkov opening night of playoffs. Correct. Correct. Yeah. So, I think I think a lot of people in the hockey world are waiting to see like Florida’s going to make their actions be known. I think you have to declare that Barov’s done for the year before using that active cap space. So, it’s probably a story down the road near the trade deadline. Like, I’ve already seen them being linked to Genny Malcin and the Pittsburgh Penguins. But, I think that’s my understanding is like they’ll make a declaration uh later on where it’s like he’s playing or he’s not playing. If he’s not playing, they can use the cap space. But, aren’t they just going to have a playoff roster cap basically is how it’s going to work? And you probably could use Bararkov, but you’re going to have to take other assets out of the lineup. Like you can’t you can’t you can’t load up. You can still play Bararkov, can you not? What if you want to play Bararkov, but you want to get into the playoffs post deadline? You got to yank some people out and which it should be anyways. Uh but I’m just curious to see the details on that and if it’s finalized or anything. I know they’re going to rectify it, which rightfully so. It’s totally screwed. I cannot believe that the all the hockey minds and the numbers guys and every team’s got their cap cruncher and this and that and then forecasters. I can’t believe during those negotiations because I’ve I’ve kind of been part of them and there’s the NHLP PA involved in the NHL and there’s a lot of brains in there and nobody said, “Hey guys, what if like your star player gets hurt and then at the deadline he’s on long-term IR and you load up, but then at playoffs he’s ready to go and your your cap’s at $112 million and everyone else is at 80.” Like it’s just like what? Nobody came up with that. So, I’m glad they’re going to rectify it. But I’m curious to see because right away one of the front runners could be in that exact situation with the Florida Panthers and and Barov. So curious what that is and everything we care about is so far away. It’s uh it’s tough. Yeah, but that is my understanding. So like they’ll make a declaration that Barov will play or can play or he won’t play at all. If he if they make that declaration and say he’s done for the year, he’s not playing in the playoffs, it’s my understanding they can use that cap space to go out there and get somebody. But I think you’re right and I think that’s the understanding we have. Like I mean if Bararkov comes back like they they can’t add guys like they did last year like Kachchuck and company or not excuse me Kachchuck and company but Jones and company and then have the same roster when these guys are ready to go if that makes sense. It’s an easy even more even playing ground I would say this time around with this these rulings. No. Okay. So what is what like I’m just like what are the details of that? Can you get anybody at the deadline? Even though like what if you want Barkov to play, you’re not allowed to get anyone at the deadline. Like what are the details of it? Is there a plan? Well, they would just So like I think the way it would work is like I don’t know. I don’t have Puck Pedia in front of me right now, but whatever cap space the Panthers have right now with Bararkov, that’s the cap space they have moving forward. Unless something else happens. Yeah. Yeah. It’s like what about to Chuck last year? You don’t know if he’s going to be ready to play. You don’t know if he’s gonna play. You just have to roll that dice way back at the deadline. That’s interesting. I I was under the impression they were going to have a cap, a rostered cap in the playoffs, and you can juggle that however you want. You can load up on guys at the deadline and be way over technically, but what you’re playing has to be under a certain number. And what the hell they’re going where that number is going to come from, I don’t know, but maybe I’m wrong in that. I just uh I you hear a lot of stuff getting thrown out there. I think it’s really interesting how they have to rectify that in a hurry and it’s taken quite a while actually. Look, I mean, don’t quote me on this. My cousin brings me this type of questions on a daily basis, a big Hab Havs fan. I’ve got no clue about the numbers. I I I just know about the players on the ice. I don’t even act to think I know Brandon Pridam’s job. But yeah, it’s it’s it’s mildly confusing. U but I think that’s that’s my understanding is like they they’ve got to make a direct declaration at some point in time here when it comes to Bararkov. Our super chat charity partner is Sick Kids. The other thing I did see yesterday too is all these Bruins fans excited about Fraser Minton. So he scores yesterday and all of a sudden you see these tweets about thank you Toronto, thank you Boston. I think Brandon Carlo is a guy nobody talks about, but I love that deal. I would do it right now. I would honestly do that deal right now yet again. And I don’t know. I I just think it’s hilarious in in the sports world. A guy scores a goal. Congratulations. He scored a goal in the second game of the season, but I think Carlo is like a really really nice asset, great addition, and a guy you want in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yeah, it’s funny. Um, you know, I got people that throw as much shade as they possibly can at the Toronto Maple Leafs, um, for different reasons, but nobody says boo about the back end. Like maybe they would say they’re aging or something like, “Oh, no, they’re veterans. like they have experience and they’re not 38 years old. Like, okay, that’s the one knock. So, our back end’s solid. Um, I’m always kind of proud of the back end saying like this is going to this is going to pay dividends if if if they start to go on a run or do what people are hoping they can do. Um, and Carlo’s a big part of that for sure. Yeah, for I saw him score that goal and it’s it’s so funny, man. Toronto is famous and I don’t know if if you went to the Minnesota Wild and just dissected the living hell of the last 20 years, you’re you can’t tell me they didn’t make trades and give away draft picks that turned into people that people don’t even realize because not as many people are even paying attention or care to be honest to even bring it up. But I think that is the case. But with Toronto, certainly there are prospects and draft picks where people just love going back and saying, “Remember this deal? Guess what this turned into.” And it’s like, “Oh god.” And you got to go all the way down the rabbit hole to figure out what a deal what the fruition was from pulling triggers on deals throughout the deadline and free agency and all the rest of it. But yeah, Minton, he’s a good player. We knew that when they made a move. But, you know, this team was ready to win now and they wanted to make a play at getting a little bit better at the deadline and it cost Fraser Minton and that doesn’t mean that he’s never going to score a goal again. So, I saw that as well and just shake my head saying oh more of the same from haters of Toronto, I guess. Yeah, that’s exactly it and certainly what it is. And um the chat’s always smarter than me, but they say you can be uh the playoff roster must be compliant. Um no roster cap, only a lineup cap. So, for example, I guess Florida can tell Babski, “You’re not dressing at all tonight.” And then dress, you know, Barov or somebody like that. Does that make sense? Was this your way of saying that I was right? Yeah. Yeah. I think like I I think you were. Um I I don’t I don’t know. There’s Yeah. No, I think the CBA cuz the number is like a 24. I’m the wrong person to ask. You want to get Freeman or Pota on here to discuss the salary cap? I’ve got no clue. I’ll be honest. But it’s I’m just spitballing with you, Nikki. It’s interesting what they’re going to come up with a number, right? This is new. So, what is that number on a 20man roster in the playoffs? Yeah. Like you said, you can pull Bobber off of that or somebody. Yeah. To make room for So, you can still try to load up on the debt, but you can only ice a certain amount of money, which I think is smart. I thought that’s the way it should be. I was saying two years ago, I’m like, make it so that the the team you put on the ice in the playoffs has to be under a limit. So, go ahead and load up to because because you got to allow a team with hurt players to load up at the deadline to try to make the playoffs or win your division or conference or whatever it is you’re going for. But then you can’t just bring your star back and be like because how many examples of it? The Tampa Bay Lightning like they’re $18 million. Like it’s faking insane. Yeah. So, they know that they’ve rectified it before the new CBA even kicks in after this year. They’re going no we’re shoving this in which almost never happens. But that’s going to be interesting to know what that number is and watch teams get creative to try to use all the assets that they have at their disposal and healthy players that have gotten healthy for the playoffs and try to get them all on the ice at the same time. Um, and what that number is, I’m I’m totally uh I’m totally interested in that process and what it’s going to look like because it’s been such a problem and and they’re aware of it and teams who have won the Stanley Cup like many of them have used that to their advantage. So, it’s going to be kind of interesting. And right off the bat, the number one team everyone talks about and has used it and has had success is the Florida Panthers and their star captain is out for the season, which does that include postseason or not? I’m not sure. Well, even even Vegas, I mean, who’s to say that Alex Petrangelo doesn’t randomly show up late in the season? It’s like, all right, hey guys, I’m playing. But, uh, it makes sense. Producer Vic writing in our in our chat here, the the lineup has to be NHL cap compliant, whatever the cap is. NHL teams must dress lineups within the salary cap during the playoffs, starting the season. Um, so I think it’ll be interesting from that aspect because I did hear um, and I forget who it was on a podcast a couple weeks ago, somebody prolific talking about maybe a team like dress as a backup goalie. Like for example, if you’re the Leafs, you’re better off with a guy like Kaden Primo backing up than like a Joseph Wolf. If that makes sense. Man, I think it’s going to get interesting. There’s going to be a loophole somewhere. Big time. That’s what I’m saying. It’s going to be because maybe you got this asset at the deadline who makes 6 million bucks, but you want to activate your captain who’s coming back or whether it’s to Chuck or whether it’s Barov. I’m using Florida as an example because they’re obvious. Yeah. Can you keep the guy you got, but then you just start yanking money elsewhere? And it’s crazy. There there there is a salary cap, but it’s not going to be the common regular season salary cap. It’s going to be a an uh a 20man iced tonight’s lineup salary cap, which I’m curious to see what that number is and and to see what the gymnastics they do to try to shove as many people on as they can. It’s going to be kind of cool, but I am glad it’s not just a wideopen Wild West anymore. And uh yeah, more things we’re talking about that come come to fruition in April, but uh it’s a tough time of year. We got we got to focus on right now on the little things like the Detroit Red Wings. man, cap circumvention, I think, has been a term since the salary cap was agreed upon like 20 years ago. So, I think to your point, teams will find a way uh in their best interest to find a way to to to to manipulate when, you know, whatever the ruling is. So, the Maple Leafs as we speak, Rosie on the ice practicing, uh the theory I had yesterday about having Cowan play the first Marley’s game out the window because Eastston Cowan’s on the ice or practice today. So, Oh, your theory of him have being on the Marlies or playing? Remember remember I was mentioning, oh, maybe they they’re just getting ready to send him to the Marlies for the opener. He’s on the ice with the Leafs today. So, so another example of you saying I was right. What would you say? I’m saying they’re playing Cowan here soon. He’s on for a reason they’re going to play him. The only reason they didn’t play him opening night is it was kind of a I guess you’re right. You’re you’re right again. Does that work for you? Yeah. Is that you’re like you’re like my wife. It’s tough for you to say that sometimes. No, I think that’s smart, man. Again, that was kind of a a weird hiccup and I really felt like it was because of the paper transaction and people going on waiverss and whatever. I I don’t think he I think he missed some time skating with the team and being on the ice. Um which for a kid like that, an opportunity in a moment, why pull him out of his element and then kind of screw him over by shoving him with this huge kind of monumental time in a player’s life as your first NHL game. So, I thought they were going to throw him in um in the in the next game, and I hope they do. I think he earned it, and I want to see him I want to see what he can do. You know, we talked about game one being a little bit disappointing, a little bit flat, a little bit emotionless, uh, a lack of intensity, which kind of pisses me off. I remember when you started seasons, you know, at a certain point in time, it was runaround time. It was hammer, guys. It was, I’ve been thinking about this all summer. My body feels good. I’m fresh. I’m strong as I feel all year, and I’m ready to go run through some people and and get the juices going. There was none of that in game one, which I know the game’s not totally that way, but it’s kind of annoying and a piss off and you’d like to see it a little bit more, but here’s Eastston Cowan and he’s not a runaround and freight train guys, but he is young as could be. He’s full of piss and vinegar. He wants to prove his point. He wants to play in the NHL. He wants to start his career off on the right foot. You imagine that he’s going to be buzzing a little bit and and excited for his first NHL game. I love first NHL games for anybody. just to see um a kid live his dream and say, “I’ve there. I I did it. I made it and now I can see what I can make of this career.” So, I hope that’s the case. I hope he’s skating on a line and I hope he’s uh he’s playing tomorrow night and I hope he does well. Do you have a preference like does it matter to you whether a guy starts on the road or at home because I know they got this back this home to home home and home I should say with Detroit Saturday then Monday afternoon. Does it matter to you? Well, I think it’s easier, especially playing for the Maple Leafs, to do it on the road, right? You’re kind of under the radar a little bit. Um, you can kind of stay away from from all the talk. Obviously, your phone’s going to be blowing up and stuff all day long, which is fine, but it’s a little more, you know, under the radar, but if you want it to be more memorable and it to be more of a splash and more of a special thing, you know, for the Maple Leafs to do it at home is kind of more important. But the people who are making those calls do not give a [ __ ] about that. They’re trying to figure out what what to do and those details don’t really matter. But I think it’s kind of nice to start at home, but I could care less if Eastston Cowan starts at home or on the road. I think it’s just fine for him to start in Detroit. And um maybe even smarter because he is that younger player who, you know, there’s kind of been the argument over does he play in the American League or does he play in the NHL? So for that reason, I don’t mind him dipping his toe in the water on the road. And I think to that point, you look at the first game, it just it lacked everything that you want to see from the Maple Leafs. Like they found a way to get the job done. They they win that game. It was uh, you know, much different feel, I think, than last year. If you recall, the Leafs are all over the Montreal Canadians and Samuel Montbo was the only reason why the Havs won one- nothing in that game. I think I left this game with a lot to be desired moving forward for this Maple Leafs team. and maybe it starts with the gumption and the intensity to start the game and they just didn’t really have a physical presence. So, I’m looking forward to seeing that here over the next couple with Detroit. But I think you the the reasoning what I’m saying could be easy to to to pull a Yarn Croak, maybe not a Yarn Croak as he scores last game, but a Robertson or somebody else outside of the lineup to get Cowan in. Right. Well, I was going to say we know who’s coming out, right? Um Yeah, it’s not Yarn Croak, I don’t think. No, it’s not Yarn Kro. I mean, I think Chief likes Yarnney and he threw him up on the top line there uh when it was time to shut down and actually kind of a side story to pull Machelli off the top line. It doesn’t look like Machelli invokes a ton of confidence out of coach Craig Bub, but Yarnney kind of does. And you know, he’s a veteran. He kind of does things the right way. He’s not crazy flashy or anything, but he was he was feeling good scoring a goal on opening night when he wasn’t even sure if he’d be on the roster. Um Allah him going up to the top line to kind of play some shutdown minutes with what was it six five four minutes left in the game. Um so I imagine Yarnney is not going anywhere. But Robertson who you know some people don’t like him. Some people are head over heels in love with him and I think that’s indicative of his play. It can either be hot as a pistol or it can be absolutely flat and useless. And um I didn’t see anything positive out of him in in game one. Um, and I think he is the obvious guy to come out and I think he’s going to come out and Cowan’s going to go in. Um, and Yarnney will probably bump up the lineup. It’ll be interesting to see what they do. But another reason that opening night was kind of flat is like these guys I think had expectations to have a lineup to play. I mean, I had that fourth line ready to especially the bottom six. Like that’s kind of what they’ve tweaked in a lot of ways and and what I think they need to lean on a little heavier in the playoffs compared to years past. So you have this in your mind. you’re going to play this and then it gets kind of blown up with the simple departure of Scott Lton and now you know Yarn Croakkes in and and Robertson are in and you don’t really get to see the lineups that you want and I I again I think that if that third line has got Dakota Joshua Nick Wah and uh Max Doi on it I think that would be unreal and then to see that fourth line of with Lton in it I think that’s when you’d start to see the coming in on waves huge for check bigger hits uh more physical action and more intense inensity. I’m hoping at least that’s what it looks like. So, it just kind of sucks they got derailed right before the beginning of the season. I know. And I know it’s just one game, but like I think it’s it’s fair to say that if you had to rank those three guys that were on the bubble like Kemp’s in the AHL right now, Robertson, Yarn Croak, I think the preference with Craig Ruby would be Cali Yarn Croak. He’s in a contract year. He’s a guy who’s been there before, played some meaningful games. I think there’s a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths the way the last year I would say in general has gone for Cali Aron Croak. He was a no-show in the Stanley Cup playoffs. But I think to your point, you could tell early on and this is a Sheldon Keefe thing too. They have a lot of trust. They had a lot of trust in Cali Yarn uh from a defensive standpoint. And he’s a guy like imagine a world where Cali Yarn has a bounceback season could provide 15 to 20 goals for the Maple Leafs. Like they’d be sitting pretty, I think. Oh yeah. Any any uh you know bottom six off like I love that whenever it’s not like Knander, Nice, Tavvarz, Matthews and guys are scoring you you you have to love to see that if you’re the Maple Leafs majorly. That was like one of the positive takeaways for sure of of opening night is you got some depth scoring and some backend scoring. remember last year that D hadn’t scored like they were the lowest scoring defensive core in like the league basically and um I think they kind of rectified that in playoffs. can’t quite remember, but yeah, especially when you have a bunch of high-end talent. Obviously, Marner left, but you, you know, you still got the Knanders and Matthews and Navaris and when you’re getting scoring from PE places other than that, you’re tickled pink because, you know, Yarnney can be a shutdown guy and they can be those responsible guys and PK guys and and then when they’re chipping in on the score sheet and if they have a big year, um, it is it is nice. No question about it. I hope that I hope that Nick Wah can chip in a whole bunch. I hope that Scotty Lots gets hotter than [ __ ] Like, I just want to roll lines and have Chief look over at the other bench and go, “What do you have to answer for this?” Because the answer is nothing. I will just roll and roll and roll and we will have you guys on your heels spinning your wheels trying to rectify the situation. It’s never going to come and we’re going to win a lot of games. I think that’s the game plan in my mind. Um, again, I’d like to see um, lots get healthy and and get this get this lineup kind of solidified a little better. And I think it starts with Cowan tonight. I hope he gets off on the right foot. And I hope he’s there kind of long term. I don’t I think the only reason you develop players in the American League is because you have to. Most players have to have that stepping stone. What if you’re so faking good that you don’t need to? Well, I hope that’s cowing. Um, it’s a it’s a big ask, but again, I hope that when he plays his first NHL game, he is effective and he helps the team and he plays the next one and he plays the next one and all of a sudden it’s just like this guy’s this guy’s here. Yeah. And I think in short order, the vision is becoming more and more clear when it comes to Craig Ruby, what he looks for and what he’s looking at in this roster. Like I always bring it up, the calling card of that Blues winning Stanley Cup final team was was the fourth line, right? And I think depth uh you know and rolling all four lines I should say and I think it’s becoming abundantly clear early on um that’s the aspect like they don’t want that severe drop off from line four to line one that we’ve seen time and time again in the last decade and that’s the depth you’re starting to build even bringing in a Nicolola or a Machelli or Scotty Lden. I think most teams will play Scott Lton at 3C. I think the Leafs have the luxury of having a guy like Lton at 4C. I think, you know, it just when when you’re coming at waves to the opponent, I just think it makes it obviously much more difficult to play against. But it’s quite clear like I’m often asked this question when I do my my rounds around the league and go on various shows. Like I was on on Seattle radio earlier today and they asked me about the Leafs, how I feel about this team long term. I think they’re harder to play against, but I think that the the last key thing they want to do after solidifying the crease, and I think it’s a it’s an interesting conversation right now with Joseph Wool out. Um, but when they’re healthy, the blue line, I like them a lot. Uh, the crease, I like it a lot. Now, it’s up front, like, can they shore up the depth? And I think if you get the necessary depth, I think you put yourself in a really good spot to be just a pain in the ass to play against. Like, look at the Panthers. last year. We spent an entire series talking about that third line. I know it uh you know it takes that to win a Stanley Cup. And I don’t know if the Leafs have had to learn that the hard way or not, but um to have the core four and whatnot just you’re spread too thin elsewhere, right? and inevit like those guys have to play minutes and if you’re it’s a long road to the Stanley Cup and you’re going to need contributions from all that depth down the line especially at the forwards and when you put too many eggs in the one basket there’s just no it’s just a money game. It’s a cap reality that you don’t have enough money to pay guys to tow the line and pull their weight when the big stars aren’t on the ice and you’re going to get exposed and the margins are so thin in the playoffs that you know you’re going to lose that 43 game because you didn’t have enough depth. And I think that you know when you look around the league and see who has won in the past handful of years nobody that makes over10 million dollars on a roster that blows my mind. there’s a lot of 12 13 million guys kicking around now. That will probably change as as numbers have gone up, but it’s it’s very telling that depth is is massive. Um being physical is massive, having grit is massive, and character is the huge thing. And um I think it takes time to build character, especially as a group. You don’t know what this team is going to be, especially now in in the Toronto Maple Leafs in this era because we brought in a lot of guys. as we move some people around, but it’s character to me that gets through those tough times in in the playoffs and they’ve lacked that. Like just think back to watching playoff games and the going kind of gets tough or the wind gets taken out of your sales because of an untimely goal and you can just it’s just palpable how you can just feel and you can see it in their body language and facial expressions and you’re like, “Oh my god, like that’s devastating.” instead of being like, you know, jump on that faceoff circle and being like, drop the [ __ ] puck. We’re going we’re getting that back right now. It’s kind of like, oh no, like what are we going to do? [ __ ] It’s not the character thing. And I think when you have depth and you have some heaviness and some physicality and you can roll lines, I think it’s a lot easier to kind of link up and be like, we are this team and then that that kind of generates that character that you need. I’m just hopeful for this season that they can build that. But again, like we said in the summertime, it takes time to get to that. At the Leafs Nation 401, hit that like button, hit that subscribe button. Uh what what’s been your early read on Dakota Joshua? I call them a bit of a wild card. I think they’re obviously going to be looking for somebody to fill that patch already role. What have you seen from Joshua early on? Well, to be honest, I don’t care about preeason. We’ve had only one game um other otherwise. I too early to tell, man. I hope he um I hope he fits in. I hope he gets confidence here. I hope he has some uh I hope he can like get better and and elevate his game. I think it’s going to depend on who he’s playing with and how he’s being used. And again, I just have in my mind that bottom six that I had in my mind before Lton went down, like how Unreal is a bottom six of Joshua Wah and Doy and then Lorent L and Cowan. Like there’s you’re checking a lot of boxes. There’s some heaviness. There’s some speed, there’s some skill, there’s some veteranness, there’s there’s a lot going on there. And I think that, you know, when you are rolling the lines and you are deep and you can get those guys to click, I think Joshua could be a big part of it. I It’s just way too early to tell. Again, it was kind of disappointing. It was flat the first game. Like a guy like him just like do it old school. Dump one down and just run the [ __ ] demon. I think they tried a few times, but uh it’s kind of an uninspiring game, but again, game one, I’m not I’m not hanging my hat on anything I saw yet. I need to see need to give them some runway and let them get their feet under them. Yeah. I mean, did you see Montreal last night after that game, they came out guns of blazing, although they surrendered, I think the first goal against Detroit, then scored five unanswered goals. They cha chased John Gibson in his Red Wings debut. And we’re going to break that game down right now. The following segment is brought to you by the Ninja Krispy 4 in-1 portable glass air fryer. And I was thinking about this last night into today. Like, what will make me happy in the next two games? I think nothing short of three out of four points. I’d be pissed off. Like, Detroit sucks, man. We saw it last night. They’re not a good team. I don’t believe in Steve Eerman. I don’t believe in what they did this off season. I don’t know if you feel differently about this. It is kind of funny like this this this Eizer plan, right? It’s I kind of almost think it’s similar to the Shana plan, but they just didn’t draft the Matthewses and the Mariners and the Knanders that uh you know, and they’ve got a lot of top 10 picks. I know they got some good players and whatnot, but I don’t know. And I really feel like Eerman kind of has the same mentality as Shanahan did of, hey, it took me a while to get over the hump and someone believed in me and gave me time, so I’m going to do it with these guys. But man, it’s uh you know, for a storied franchise who was used to doing nothing but winning. And you talk, you know, about before that with with Holland and these guys, they did they not set a record for most consecutive playoff appearances. Like it was just like they’re automatically in the playoffs and now they they’ve got the record for the most times missed the playoffs currently for uh active teams. So, it’s a tough one. And yeah, I think you know, we talk about trap games a lot. But I I really remember doing this show at at the beginning years and my god were they famous for trap games. Losing to San Jose and Phoenix and who else was dog [ __ ] like four years ago and it was just like clockwork, man. Like getting just abused by these bottom feeder teams. They’ve cleaned that up as of last year. I think that’s character leadership. Craig Bubet. Um but yeah, three out of four points. I mean, if they split here, if they split here, I’m not going to be thrilled. But I’m also not going to be panicking, you know. But yeah, to get off on the right foot and and solidify yourself. I always think the 10 first 10 games of a season kind of tells you where you are and what you need to work on and how far away you are and how much work you have to do. Um, so yeah, rattling off points especially against the teams like Detroit and when you got a a half easy schedule against non-playoff teams, you got to make hay while the sunshines. Oh, 10,000%. For reference, um, the Leaf went three and one against Detroit last year. really handed it to them. And I think you look at that roster, everything revolves around Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond up front, Alex de Brinket as well. I mean, Patrick Kane’s on this team, but in the twilight of his career, still around a point per game guy, maybe a bit less. And on the blue line, like I I think that’s a really really good comparison, the Shannon plan to the Eizer plan. They got guys like Mo Cider. Like he’s really really good defense. I think a lot of people still waiting for him to take that next step in his career. like Lucas Raymond, really good hockey player, but they have nothing that I don’t think Detroit got good enough picks or when they did, they didn’t hit them as hard as the Maple Leafs did. Like you look at Matthews, you look at MNER, you look at Knander, like they just ripped those picks. And I just think that’s why they’re sputtering. The crease hasn’t been solidified. Like John Gibson’s an okay goalie. Hasn’t been the guy we saw maybe seven, eight years ago. Can never stay healthy. I wouldn’t be shocked if Cam Talbot starts this game tomorrow after Gibson’s performance and then Talbot comes in. I know they they paid quite a bit to to to get a guy like Gibson there, but I still have like a billion questions about them and Buffalo. When I look at the Atlantic division, it’s everybody then Buffalo and Detroit. Just the way I feel right now. I know it’s scary. And when you go through a rebuild, um, you know, you don’t get to rebuild to get to the top without being dog [ __ ] and finishing as bottom feeders and getting those top five picks and whatnot. Um, and if you miss those, then you’re just you’re just destined to be average for then what do you do, right? How do you go about your business trying to get like really good? So, a lot of it is luck and and hitting the draft and and hitting the heavy draft years. Sometimes there’s a draft class where there’s just not a game breaker even in the top, you know, five picks. Um, and there’s not much you can do about that. But, um, it is interesting watching these teams sputter and wondering if they’re on track and wondering where they’re going to go. And Eermanerman is, you know, I think he did some pretty good things in Tampa, obviously, but um I I just don’t know if it’s going to work out there. like you say some of their pieces are just kind of like yeah but and I don’t know and there’s some good hockey players there for sure but they’re not rocket Rashard winners they’re not heart trophy winners you know what I mean um and then Buffalo is just a calamity of errors in management I think like they have a freaking in the last I don’t know how far do you want to go back they have had an absolute allstar team at their disposal and they’re like go add up the players who they’ve had in the last 10 years who they’ve lost It’s laughable that they they’ve lost that many players and uh probably morted apart soon. So, it’s kind of nice for the Leafs while they’re kind of top of the the division, there’s other teams like that that are sputtering that probably could be pretty decent right now. Put it this way. I mean, Buffalo hasn’t made the playoffs since like your era when you were playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like, it’s been that long. Like, it just they they they just don’t make the playoffs. They don’t improve. I think Detroit is is quickly gathering that reputation and and maybe it’s unfair to to to slag on these teams. Maybe it just speaks to the depth of the Atlantic division. Like I think we both concur. Ottawa at best, you know, a bubbling team that will make the playoffs. Like they’ve got some good players. The Montreal Canadians, I think many would concur around the league. One of the most upand cominging teams are the youngest team right now in the NHL. I get that. One day they’re going to be there. But when you have Tampa, like Florida’s off to a 2 and 0 start. They win 2-1 yesterday against Philadelphia. I’ve never seen a team weather the storm as much as the Florida Panthers. Like no Kachchuck, no Bararkov, doesn’t matter. They just play their style and it’s like next man up. Like even watching the opener the other night, AJ Greer, if you recall, was a healthy scratch to start that Maple Leaf series. Now he’s like scoring goals, fights, assists. Like the buyin is insane. Like I I’d love like a 247 series and I’ve tried to ask Oel behind the scenes like what is it about Paul Maurice that you just get buy in. It doesn’t matter who you are on that roster. You could be the star player or the 13th forward. There’s just buy into your role. It’s crazy, man. I know. I’ve been thinking that that he doesn’t get enough credit for what they’ve done in the past three years. Like that’s what everyone’s trying to do is build that character, get that chemistry, and have that buy in where, you know, it’s just a cliche, but players will go through a wall for you. And I I I don’t know exactly how you build that. I know it’s difficult and I know that you got to get the right personalities together and the right leadership together, but yeah, like watch them not have Barov all year and still just be one of if not the best team in like how do you lose a guy like that and still be dominant? Like Tchuk wasn’t even much of a factor. I remember watching the first couple of games being like the Chuck’s not even like he’s not even a factor out here and it’s like and then you go up two games to none and you’re like holy [ __ ] we might get through like they might be chipped away enough to to get through them and then no they’re still just that deep guys like Ger like are you [ __ ] kidding me? Um, we need that. We need that depth. And I’m hoping, like we talked about the bottom six earlier in the show, those guys can be those guys where you put them in situations and they can absolutely get the job done. And everyone believes in everybody and everyone wants to go through a wall and you you’ll put guys in positions that they’re not normally suited for. Like I don’t know, some skill guy laying down head first to block a shot and [ __ ] like that. And it just breeds more like just of that enthusiasm and camaraderie of being part of this team. And like every team that goes the distance in the NHL has a lot of that going on. And you hear guys talk about it like when they get together for their tenure reunions of winning the cup and stuff like that. Like we were so tight. We were so there was never a team like that. And it’s just it’s one of those magical things that you can’t really put on paper but everyone is looking for it every single year. Happy you brought that up and um I Donnie Desish has made a a rare elite uh comment in in the chat saying the Bayern the Bayern in Florida started with Joe Quenville years ago which I tend to agree with and Paul Murice but as a former player like for example in the first game. What does it mean when you see like Austin Matthews blocks a shot and Matthew N blocks a shot and then this guy gets into the action? What does that mean for a room? Like how do guys react when they see that? Because I think to your point with Florida, it was like day one, Matthew Kachchuck came in there and it’s like, “Boys, I’m putting my life on the line for this team.” Yeah, I think that stuff’s contagious. And when those guys are that good and getting paid that much, every guy at that level who’s been playing hockey a long time has had star players who don’t do that [ __ ] They’re just like, “That’s not my job.” They’ve had star players that are like, “I don’t back checkck. my energy is reserved for scoring goals and forchecking and you know uh spending my energy that way. They won’t hit anyone. They won’t fight anyone. They won’t block a shot. Everyone’s had teams where the skilled players are kind of like here’s my role. I don’t do this other [ __ ] And then when you see guys doing that, you’re looking at yourself like a Dakota Joshua going [ __ ] Matthews is blocking one time slappers. Are you [ __ ] kidding me? So, you’re thinking, what can I do to stay above, you know, and play above my not limits, but my expectations and play above what I’m expected to do. So then all of a sudden, like, you want to really block shots. You want to really hammer guys in for check. You, you know, if anyone screws with that guy, you go flying in there and shed your [ __ ] and do what you have to do. And then all of a sudden that you start the building blocks of we’re a family and we’ll do anything and we’re willing and we have sacrificed and put our lives and balls on the line and that’s where all that comes from when you roll into the playoffs going like we’re like a family, you know, and um it’s hard to get sometimes you get cancers in the room and bad apples and guys on their own page and clicks where these guys hang out and those guys hang out. It’s difficult. Um, but yeah, I unfortunately again the template is the Florida Panthers. And as frustrating as that theme has been the last handful of years, it is very true. At the Leafs Nation 401, hit that like button, hit a subscribe button. Uh, by the way, the lines at practice suggest they’re going with the same lineup as they did in the season opener. N Matthew, Michelli, McMahon, Tavvarz, Knander, Joshua, Doi, Robertson, Lorren, Wah, Yarnroak. the extras Cowan and BL and Riley Carlo McCabe Tan of Benoa Oel Stoolars and Primo. Great. So Eastston Cowan is just rotting in the press box. Doesn’t make sense, does it? Like why would you have the like I understand it’s like, okay, let’s see the game day routine of John Tavvar and Austin Matthews, but I want the guy playing, you know? Yeah. I mean, if he doesn’t play on Monday, then seriously, what are you what are you doing here? I guess the Marlies haven’t really gotten going. Maybe they’ve made up their mind and he’s going to go play on the Marlies. Um, but they’re just keeping him around to watch John. Let me watch John Tvaris tape his [ __ ] stick. I I always thought that was stupid. Like, I know. What are you watching? He’s not even in the room. You’re a healthy scratch. You go to [ __ ] pregame skate. You watch John Tvaris take a couple face offs or you end up in an elevator with Nick Albera. Last week I was at the preseason game and I was in the elevator with Cowan and Danford and they didn’t even know where they were going like upstairs. They were trying to find their footing in the press box. It was funny. Yeah, it’s kind of a media thing to me like uh be around John Tvaris and learn how to be a professional. Like what the [ __ ] do you think you like that that happens over a season, you know? Like you’re going to stand there. Oh, he got to the rink at 4:15. Oh, I got to write that down. Good thing I learned that. Like I don’t know. I don’t really buy that [ __ ] But I’m surprised he’s not in the lineup. I’m kind of annoyed he’s not in the lineup. Some coaches I’m not saying Buru is like this, but will not change the lineup after a win. That’s what I’m thinking. And yeah, I can’t remember there’s I can’t remember the who’s who’s the most like that. But I remember there’s games where I was like, well, I was dog [ __ ] but we won, so I know I’m playing next one because guys just cannot bring themselves to change a winning lineup um coaching wise. So, I don’t know. I really thought you had pull Robertson out and put Cowboy in. Like why not? He you you have literally said he’s done everything you’ve asked and he’s been What were some of Brew’s quotes, man? They were just Yeah. Like very very um not beneficial. They were very complimentary of of Cowboys now. And so I’m s [ __ ] I’m very surprised he’s not in this game. I wanted to see him in there, but if not Monday, then put him on the bing Marlies and get him some reps. Seriously. Yeah. Yeah, know I I get it. Um I’m with you though. I want to see Cowan in that lineup as well, but I get why you’re going to double up, go with the same roster that won. But having said that, like it was a clunky, sloppy game. It wasn’t like they were just world beaters and dominated Montreal. Like I think you make that case and people wouldn’t bat an eye and be like, we need some new blood in that lineup and we want to take a look at Cowan. It’s early on in the season, but I think it’s fair in terms of an expectation to suggest Cowan’s going to play one of the next two games against Detroit. like maybe they’re zoning in on Monday afternoon, turkey day, Detroit in town, a 4 Eastern start time for like win or loss over the weekend. But I I think you’re right. If if you could just continue to let this stew and he’s just sitting around and not playing games, I don’t think it’s beneficial to anyone. They they clearly have a plan, but I think maybe it’s a bit of a divide between the GM and the head coach. Like that’s all I can say right now, right? When you look at the camp that Cowan put forth, I mean, you’re telling me that one guy goes down and now Cowan can’t crack this lineup. It doesn’t make sense to me. I know he was there. Like, are you that linked to him playing alongside Scott Lton? Like, did that screw him? Yeah, I know that that was cool and beneficial. And um you know the old school way of thinking was you’re not going to put a star kid out of junior on the fourth line with you know me and Colt no because what the hell is he doing playing with those guys and he’s not getting better and he’s not um playing his role and everything else but you know he is a bit of a workhorse and a spark plug and he likes to play a little bit heavy and gritty at times. So, and it’s the new NHL. It’s not 2005 where some guy’s trying to kill him every second. So, why I I I maybe they’re really linked to him playing with Scott Lton. But, uh again, I still see value in him getting reps and maybe he will and maybe he’ll play that because that’s at home on Monday, right? Yes. Four four o’clock starts a wonky start for a guy. I don’t know what they’re doing. I really don’t. Maybe there is some divide between management and coaching. That was the case when I was there. like Ron Wilson did not want to play me, but Brian Burke absolutely did and they would fight about it. And uh it’s not a good thing. Uh it’s interesting though. I But I thought I really thought like you thought you think Bubé might be the one who doesn’t want to put him in, right? No, I think Ruby wants to put him in. I don’t think Tree Living wants him in. Yeah. Well, then put him on the freaking Marlies and and develop them. But again, they haven’t really got going that much. Maybe it’s just a weird holding pattern time, but I got to admit I’m surprised that he’s not playing tomorrow. It’s really bizarre because uh as you referenced, Craig Barubi has been very complimentary. Like, you wouldn’t just go out of your way to say that for a young player. Coaches have I mean, we’ve seen coaches do it left and right where they’re like, I don’t think he’s ready. I think he can use some seasoning. They haven’t that hasn’t been the messaging from Craig Baruby where he’s like, I think he’s NHL ready. Like, if that’s not an endorsement, I’ve never heard one in my life. Right. So, at some point in time, it’s going to happen. They’re playing Detroit. All right, I know a couple people in the chat asking, “The game’s not tonight. It is tomorrow night.” Hockey night in Canada, as talked about off the top of this podcast, no games in the NHL on this Friday. I have no clue what I’m going to do with my life, but looking forward to that. And the last thing I wanted to bring up, like like the Leafs need to weather the storm. I I think it’s safe to say Detroit might be a little hot under the collar after they’re just humiliated in their opener against Montreal. Like I think if you survive the first 10 minutes, cliche to say, I think you’re in a good spot. I I fully expect the Leafs to go in there and win that hockey game. I’ll just say that. Well, I hope so. Um they are going It’s just like like I think your bet of the day was for Montreal to have the bounce back down in in Detroit, was it not? Yeah. And they 100% did it. It often happens when you kind of lose a nailbiter in the opening and could have won and then you go down to kind of a average team like you are ready to rock and rectify what happened and that mentality kind of leads to a a win like that and I’m hoping that the Detroit Red Wings don’t have the exact same mentality because we’ve seen the Leafs in the past lose those sleeper games and uh I I again I don’t think they’ve done it as much in the past or as consistently as they used to. So, yeah, I I think they’re the better team and they should absolutely come out hot. Um, again, I wish Cowan was in because I think he’s a guy that could spark, you know, some energy and some excitement and I think they lo like considering it’s opening night in Toronto against Montreal, there was not nearly enough energy and excitement and intensity out there, for my taste, there just wasn’t. And you inject a young guy that’s young trying to prove himself. First game in the NHL, [ __ ] away you go, kid. Like, spark the boys. Um, so disappointing that he’s not going to be in again. I think that’s the theme of the show. I’m disappointed that Cowan hasn’t freaking played for this team yet. Gary Kay’s got a really good question. How much extra of a paycheck does a player get just hanging with an NHL team rather than being sent down? Significant amount. No. Oh, yeah. Like you’re It’s a The schedule’s broken down into days and days on roster. You’re either making What would Cowan make? $960,000. Yeah. With bonuses. Yeah. Or would it be or would it be $85,000 or something in the minor? It’s tenfold. It’s tenfold. 10 of your paychecks in the American League equal one in the in the National League. So, he’s absolutely um soaking that up. Same with Blaze, right? He’s kicking around. Like, every time I see, oh yeah, he’s still kicking around making that money. Like, you can forget about guys that you don’t even realize are on the roster anymore and they’re collecting paychecks for the last two months. It’s uh it happens. And little things for guys like me like in 2010 we had the Olympic break. It was like a two week break where no one can do anything. And I’m like are they going to send me down to the Marlies during the Olympics and then we had this roster freeze where you had to decide at this date and the day just came and went and I’m like oh my god. And then some of the guys that were like you know could have been in that situation they’re like two weeks of show pay. Two weeks of show pay. So yeah, it absolutely matters and makes a difference to guys and they you bet they notice. Talk about show pay. Do you remember the first time you saw the first amount of money go in your account like show money? Your reaction like do you have to like pinch yourself? Because I always wonder that I had a buddy who uh was a high prospect at the Colorado Avalanche and I remember he got a massive signing bonus. I think within seconds he’s like going to buy a new car. Bought a sick ass like Lexus. Like we were at the bar on the weekend in the summer. He bought out a tap in Mscoa. I’ve never seen anybody do that. Like he’s like, “We’re gonna buy this tap.” The bartender’s like, “Okay, we’re using this tap all night long.” Do you remember, you know, that first moment where you saw that show money come in your account? Well, I remember getting my signing bonus when I left college and I looked at my dad and I was like, “What the hell?” And he’s like, “Get used to it, buddy. Those taxes are coming off everything you ever make for the rest of your life.” So, yeah, for sure. Um, I don’t know if I if I had like a one-way contract or something like that. I’m kind of guilty. Like I don’t go and like blow it. Yeah, it’s flowing now and look at it. I go like the second I sign, I’m like, “Okay, this much money is going to equate to this much cash. I’m going to put this here and invest that there and get this rental house or do that thing.” And I kind of have it all spoken for. So when it starts to roll in throughout the year, it’s already spoken for. Like it’s not like, “Holy [ __ ] let’s go to the [ __ ] bar.” It’s already spoken for. That money’s going somewhere already. So, I’m kind of boring in that sense, I guess. But, uh, I also saw lots of guys like buy out the Gucci store and [ __ ] and I’m like, “Dude, you’re making 700, not 7 million. Like, what are you doing?” And those guys are probably kicking themselves right now, dude. Do you ever see these videos? I know you’re not a basketball guy, but Dante West, he played with LeBron in Cleveland. He literally lives outside a gas station now. Like, it’s it’s so sad. He is I don’t know if drugs have taken over his life, but it’s crazy to think you see his life and to think 15 years ago or 20 years ago he was on an NBA court with LeBron winning basketball games, playing in championships. Like it’s crazy, but it happens. I think that that’s a pretty good like lesson for kids out there because I think I’ve seen it. I’m sure you’ve seen it as you just referenced like kids will sign their contract and they’ll just try to blow every penny. You got to be smart with it. So, uh nice little advice here on the podcast. It’s time now for the last call. Brought to you by bet365. Whatever your bet is, it’s never ordinary at Bet 365. Download the app and get in on the game. Use code nation. That’s nation natio n. You can either dish on game five with Detroit and Seattle or we can look at the Leafs game. I think I’m going to take the over with the Leafs and Red Wings tomorrow night. Yeah, you mentioned that. I don’t mind that. Um, my pick before game one was Machelli on the board. I think it was any anytime appetizer was actually the uh where the money was at. I’m going Matthew Ny anytime point. Matthew N’s anytime point. Um, especially if they hit the over as you are predicting. I think NY’s guy is going to be in on one of them. No doubt. So, I’m putting some eggs in in that basket. I thought he was um a little bit quiet opening night. I thought he did some stuff down the stretch then kind of figured it out late, but early on he was kind of doing that wide leg for check that wasn’t really a forch check and kind of read and reacting instead of dictating. And I I kind of imagine he’ll snap out of it down there and uh and at least get in on one goal I think is pretty um likely. I’m going to go with another Austin Matthews goal. ATG uh pass the goalie this time. I just think it was actually honestly really big for him to score an empty netter. I mean, he didn’t have a great game in the first game. It’s crazy that like the shot props, too. I think these guys will be horny to prove something in game two. So, we’ll see what happens on Saturday night. Any plans for uh Thanksgiving here? My child is in a hockey tournament. So, we’re going to Calgary. Um Oh, actually, it’s this massive tournament. I think we’re playing Winnipeg and all kinds of [ __ ] So, uh I’ll be doing that. But, um it all lines up where I can watch some hockey actually and get in on the action. And then we’re doing a little Thanksgiving dinner with extended family at the farm on Monday. So yeah, nice little weekend. How about yourself? Just curl on the couch and play with yourself or what? Yeah, pretty much. Might play with myself tonight. Watch the game tomorrow night. I’m actually really jacked for the first Saturday of the season. I’m just going to cram hockey. Didn’t have a chance to watch much last night. I went bowling last night. That was a good little fun. First date. Yeah. Pardon me. First date. Yeah, little bowl session. Um, I I couldn’t take the foot off the pedal. I’ll be honest. I’m just got one track when it comes to to mini putt or or bowling, but you know, it’s a it was a competitive spirit out there. So, you went on to clarify, you went on a date bowling and I floored it. Yeah. Like with booze or with competitive? No, no, no, no. Not with booze. Like playing like I don’t know. When you used to go on dates, were you able to like gently have it stay close? We’ll say like with not beating her brains out at the bowling score, you Yes. Yeah. Um I don’t know a fine line between not showing off but showing that you know what you’re doing in the sporting department, I guess. But it sounds like you just went full tilt and and wanted to Did you just rub it in on how bad she was, too? Sounds like a really good date for her. Oh, it’s tremendous. Uh no, she kept asking uh why I kept curling the ball and I said, “I have no clue what I’m doing. Well, you’re throwing some spin on her. Well, sounds like you know what you’re doing a bit, but I don’t I don’t even know what I was doing. I think it was just the arm slot. I was telling her about arm slot, but anyways. Yeah. So, I’ll be playing with myself a bit tonight. Uh looking forward to some action Sunday. Uh just some food with the family, hanging out, chilling out. And programming note as well, we’re going to be with you on Monday to tee up that game, game two of this home and home. Uh same time, 11 a.m. Eastern time. So, we’ll chat then, Rosie.
