Atlanta Falcons Must Make A Crucial Decision On $20 Million Defensive STUD | Falcons News & Rumors
[Music] Dirty Birds fans, welcome in to this episode of Falcons Today by Chat Sports. We’re going to get a little positive on today’s episode. I know there’s times where you feel like Moose can be way too negative. So, what I want to do is highlight one player that I believe going into his free agency year deserves an extension from the Dirty Birds. That’s this guy right here, Kaden Ellis. one of our linebackers who I believe has the ability based off of his skill set to transform his game into something a little bit more than just a linebacker. We’ll talk a little bit about that coming up here in just a little bit. Now, before we do that, listen, if you love the breakdowns, whether you agree with me or disagree with me, and that is totally fine if you disagree with me. I’m not always correct. Hit that subscribe button if you love Dirty Birds content. Join the 41,000 strong that we have on this channel. trying to get to 42,000 before Monday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills. Let’s talk about Mr. Ellis. I love this guy’s game. I think this guy can play really, really good football, not only as a coverage linebacker, but also as someone that can get to the quarterback as an edge. And if you don’t believe me, just take a look at the numbers that he’s put up so far in 2025. 23 tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack and a half, four quarterback hits, a PFF grade of 61.6. Now remember, PFF is not the Bible, but it does give you a good indication of where he stacks amongst his peers. By the way, that four for tackles for loss is number one on the team for the Dirty Birds. Leads the team in tackles for loss. How about that? That’s pretty cool. Here’s another thing that I know. They don’t use him to go after the quarterback nearly as much as they should because they need him to drop back in coverage. But with the two combination, the duo combination of Divine Diablo and Kaden Ellis, this is some of the best linebacker play I have seen in a long, long time. I mean, it is really, really good stuff. And they play differently. As much as both of them can play at the line of scrimmage, Divine Diablo is more of that surveyor of the middle of the field. The kind of guy that sits back kind of like a center fielder in baseball. Just has eyes everywhere. Just kind of, you know, nose for the football, goes wherever it goes. Kaden Ellis is your pressure player. He’s a player that can absolutely wreck havoc behind the line of scrimmage, but can also duel as somebody that can drop back in coverage. Now, here’s where the money comes in, right? Because we are talking about ressigning Kaden Ellis. It’s not just a puff piece on how much we love Kaden. Here’s what Sports Illustrated said about him. Ellis is in the final year of his three-year 21.5 million contract and turned 30 years old in July. Ellis was brought into Atlanta to play inside linebacker and freelance as a pressure player like I just said at edge or up the middle. With the constant injuries to Troy Anderson, Ellis wasn’t given license to attack the middle or excuse me, the backfield like the Falcons had hoped in his first two seasons. He’s been productive no matter what role he’s been asked to do so. As an inside linebacker who can pressure the quarterback, his value could double to $15 million if he hits free agency. So, first of all, let me just say this because there’s a lot to uh break down there. I think a three-year deal is definitely worth worth the risk, especially as a 30-year-old player. There’s a lot of fans that could be cautious about giving another player like that being that old that kind of extension because once you hit 30, it’s not universally understood, but it’s kind of understood that unless you’re the elite of the elite, you’re probably only going to get one to two-year contracts moving forward in your career, right? Because 30 years old is kind of that spot where it’s like, okay, you’re no longer a spring chicken. you probably have some good football left, but the descent starts kind of like right at 30. That’s the top and then it goes slowly downhill from there. If we go based off of the highest paid linebackers per year, you’ll notice something. A lot of these players are more surveyors of the middle of the field, which is where Kaden Ellis can kind of become a little bit different because if he if we’re talking about an edge player, if Kaden wants to transform his game into an edge, he can absolutely command way more than $15 million a year. So, if he did make 15, let’s just say right there that that was the number, he’d automatically become the fifth highest paid or tied for fifth in the NFL. But like I said, he’s more than just a linebacker. He’s kind of a hybrid, but because of the injuries to Troy Anderson, who is that stereotypical inside linebacker, Kaden Ellis has had to fill into that role. Do you see where I’m going at? So, I believe Kaden Ellis looks at this and goes, “Once we get Troy back, I can become a pure edge rusher like Nick Bonito, Jonathan Cooper, or any other outside linebacker in the NFL.” He’s not only, by the way, the free agent going into 2026 for the Dirty Birds. Leonard Floyd will be a free agent. David Onya will be a free agent, and Arnold Ediat will also be a free agent. Out of the three here on this list, Kaden Ellis is at the highest priority to get paid out of all three of these guys. There’s no question about it. None whatsoever. And I like Leonard Floyd, but you know, veteran, does he really, you know, bring a ton to the team outside of this 20 25 years, 25 season? Who knows? Who knows? But that’s where, like I said, I believe that Kaden Ellis’s next role could be completely different this next coming season in 2026, especially if the Falcons wanted to resign him. And I think you’re going to like this because it could look very, very cool with two other pass rushers on the Dirty Birds. Now, before we do that, I got to tell you about my friends over at Prize Picks. You and I make decisions every single day, but on Prize Picks, being right can actually get you paid. So, should Kaden Ellis become a true edge rusher? I think there’s a little bit more to this than meets the eye. You know who I kind of could see him playing like? And do not take this as I’m comparing Kaden Ellis to Micah Parsons because I’m not. Micah is one of the best we’ve ever seen. He’s one of the best in the NFL. But what I will say is if you played like Micah Parsons where your primary goal was to get after the quarterback 80% of the time and then the other 20% of the time you dropped back in coverage, that’s where I think you could absolutely see Kaden Ellis make his damage and his presence felt. Especially if you’re going to get Troy Anderson back, which multiple of you, multiple of you, that doesn’t make any sense. Tons of you have told me, “We need Troy Anderson back. We need Troy Anderson back.” Fine, if you want Troy Anderson back, then you can bring him back and pair him up with Divine Diablo as your inside linebackers. But then what do you do with Kaden Ellis? Then you’d have to flip him out to the edge. He’d have to become an outside linebacker, someone who plays kind of like that, you know, Micah Parsons, Nick Bonito, Jonathan Cooper. your primary goal is to get after the quarterback. The other 20% of the time you can drop back in coverage. And wouldn’t it be sweet to see a combo of those two and have Kaden Ellis as well pairing on the edge? Now, you’re probably wondering, well, what about the other guys? I know exactly who you’re talking about. the two dudes we drafted in the 2025 NFL draft, the potential big three, James Pierce Jr., Jaylen Walker, Kaden Ellis as your edge rushers. Wouldn’t that feed families? Wouldn’t that just go absolutely ballistic? I think it would, especially as those top two, those two rookies get better and better with each and every game. If you had this three, you could be potentially looking at 30 sacks between the three of them. I truly believe that. I think you’re you’re limiting yourself to what Kaden Ellis can do by not dropping him or not allowing him to get after the quarterback nearly as often as he can because he’s shown multiple times that he can absolutely do it. He’s just not playing like that right now. There are so many ways that you can use players in this Albbrrook defense. By the way, there’s so many different possibilities and schemes that you can draw up. I could see them making this shift if they said, “Hey, look, we’ll give you $15 million a year, right? We’re going to give you a 2year or threeyear contract at $15 million a year, but your new your new primary objective is to get after the quarterback.” So, maybe that takes, you know, 5 to 10 more pounds of muscle. Maybe that just takes a little bit more training. Either way, I could see Kaden Ellis becoming an edge next year full-time. So, if you believe that he could do that as well, you let me know in the comments section down below. Should Kaden Ellis become a full-time edge rusher for the Dirty Birds? Yes or no? I mean, right now he’s filling a need at that inside linebacker position, but if we’re talking next year, that might be a yes. Either way, let me know in the comments section down below. He could get more sacks sure, but he’d also cost more
Rise up baaaby
Give him 3 more years. Even if we get more lbs as he ages he'd be good rotation.
I met kaden at training camp this yr and got his autograph and told him im glad he with us and left that other team and he said he's happy to be here
Really like this big 3 idea
Pay that man!!! Should’ve paid landman too, but I digress 😢
Troy is injury prone. I wouldn’t bring him back. Move walker to inside LB and go get another edge with size.
Mooooooosse. I love Kaden Ellis. He's had 2 great years here. But, Id rather have Jalen Walker take his place as the do everything linebacker on this team. Walker will be cheaper and younger at that position. I don't have a problem with Ellis being resigned. But I do feel that exclusive edge rushing is not the best way to use J Walker. Using Walker the way we use Ellis would work out better for this team. If we do wind up signing Ellis, we have kept a great player, and we will find a way to use them all (Diablo, Ellis and Walker) in the defensive linebacking corps.
At this point do we truly need Tory Anderson or could he better serve as midseason trade for a draft pick…
I really hope we do not bring back Troy, if he could stay healthy yes but he can't.
Should’ve kept landman instead of Anderson
So we keep Ellis Pearce and Walker and let AK walk?
We need to give Kaden an extension ASAP so he doesn’t hit free agency.
Kaden is a beast and makes an impact in nearly every game. PFFs grades are BS and basically worthless for measuring anything outside of offensive line. Their grades never make sense.
Case in point: after the atl/was game, they had mariota ranked way better than penix and Bijan Robinson wasn't even in the falcons top 5 grades.
That tells me all I need to know about their so called "grading"
Definitely resign Ellis. The man has earned it.
It's time to move on from Troy Anderson he just can't stay healthy
Definitely have to keep Ellis. Dude insane and a baller!
Let him walk. He doesn't deserve an extension. Players like this mess your cap up. We need to draft his replacement
