What exactly should we do at the 1B and 2B positions? Trades (if possible/viable) are included in this hypothetical free agency run.

  1. Jake isn’t going anywhere and he’s a good 2nd baseman I believe by WRC+ he was 4th in the MLB. 1st base will depend on if they are willing to spend money or not. If they think Sheets can play there he needs a lot of work on his fielding especially his scooping low balls.

  2. IF they decide to make a splash and spend, which I highly doubt, then Alonso or Murakami are great fits. Also Naylor. But I don’t think they will, and any surplus money should go to starting pitching first anyway.

Most likely scenario to me is Sheets plays 1B most of the time, swapping to DH occasionally. On his DH days, some warm body plays 1B like one of the bench guys we already have or whatever dirt cheap vets we pick up this offseason (like we have done with Iglesias, Solano, etc). That’s the no significant new money solution, which seems to be what they prefer right now.

If they decide to pursue a FA, OHearn makes the most sense. But I dunno if he wants to stay here after how he was treated. Rhys Hoskins, Josh Bell, and Ty France could all be cheaper but still solid solutions. Any of them could split time with Sheets at both 1B and DH. They all have slugging potential and won’t command huge contracts. All the other current FA at 1B are super old and/or ass.

Would be easier to get a guy via trade, and Preller loves to deal. But idk who he would target with the farm totally gutted. With limited trade chips, and likely a preference not to take on too much salary, he would have limited options.

Like others mentioned, 2B isn’t really a discussion. Crone is locked in there long term. I guess if Preller can pull off another masterful deal and trade him while dumping most of his salary then it opens up a discussion. But he’s not bad for what he costs. Better to just ride it out with him.

Open holes to me in order of importance are:

    SP (need multiple more options)
    1B
C (Fermin can’t play every day)
DH (although don’t need a full time DH with options like Sheets, X and Machado rest days, etc)
Bench (need at least a couple more decent vets)

  3. I mean because Sheets is locked up the padres have a piece at every position already set next year, which means the best value bat with slug, should be the target. I hope it’s Naylor, Bell, or the 25 year old slugger from Japan personally. For the pitcher, I would love the padres to get lefty Ranger Suarez.

  4. Brother, take a vacation from the misery. Fans don’t have to worry about this stuff until at least new years

  5. The dream would be Schwarber and Crone, but likely it’ll be Crone and Sheets or re-sign O’Hearn to a team-friendly deal. Estimates have him at around 11m/yr

  6. Thanks for the red circles bro. I didn’t know where 1B or 2B were on the diamond, so this clears a lot up for me.

    Thanks again.

  7. Jake is one of the best heads up fielders we have. Still like him at 2B. Always knows where the play is, covers a lot of ground, and turns two as good as anyone on the team. Yeah, I wish he was still hitting like he did his contract year, but I can allow a bit of slack based on his defense.

  8. Cronenworth should bat leadoff considering he has an OBP in the top 10 in the mlb. And for first base just make sure we don’t bring Arraez back

  9. I was studying this so literally. I’m going well. I don’t know where was the ball hit? Lol.

  10. You been asleep for the last few months??? We traded for an all star first baseman Schildt was afraid to start cuz he didn’t want to hurt anyone feelings.

  11. Random but i want josh naylor back. Low key one of my favorite ballers. Dude is a dawwg

  12. Hear me out…Naylor and may (niebla works his magic)…I truly believe we can get a more slug focus approach and make it work with our current roster with these additions…I might be crazy but I’ve been in love with May’s stuff since he was on the dodgers. It’s fucking special And the dude just needs a healthy season with the fog working his magic

  13. O’Hearn and Arraez are gone, how about Pete Alonzo at 1B? I know he’s gonna command a ton of $… more wishful thinking. Preller will find a fix at 1B. More concerned with SP tbh

  14. I think we make a serious run at Pete Alonso. At 2nd it’s likely Cronenworth unless the front office decides they want to try and move his contract. I like him but I wouldn’t be mad if they moved him.

  15. Thanks for circling 1st and 2nd base on a map. Didn’t know what you were talking about for a second

  16. Jake had a 2.9 fWAR this year and that puts him at top 5 in the NL. He bats 8th with a good OBP and can multiple positions if we need him to cover. No need to create another hole on the diamond. Padres should definitely be focused on adding power at 1B and DH to pair with Sheets.

  17. Unless we have the capital to trade or sign a really good 2B, just keep Crone. It would be much easier to find someone to either DH or play first.

  18. For 1st bast get Alonso, Schwarber or Murakami

Trade Croneworth get Gleyber in FA for 2nd base
