Aaron Glenn discusses his start to life as the New York Jets head coach 🗣️

Coach, I know there are only 32 men in the world doing your job. So, it’s a special job anyway. Yeah. But how special is it to be the head coach of the New York Jets given your history? Yeah, it’s um it’s something that I’ve talked about quite a bit. Um as far as this is when it comes to being a head coach, this is the job that I’ve always wanted. Um this is a job that that you know I was eyeing for the most part. And to be able to uh to have this job right now, man, it’s it’s a dream come true. Listen, it there’s a lot of work that comes with this job and I understand that. Um, but I love it every day. Every day. So, I mean, it’s um, like I say, it’s a dream come true. Your root as a as a player for the Jets and a scout for the Jets, so on the road, traveling, all of that that comes with it. Y, does that all help you get to where you are today? I think the best well one of the best advices I’ve gotten was not to jump into being a head coach initially was to be able to scout. Um and that was because of Bill Parcels. You know, he wanted me to do that and it allowed me to understand exactly how to evaluate every position on the field which is really really helpful for a coach. Um it helped me really understand exactly schematically what I want to do as a coach. Um, and I don’t take those days away. And I actually I I loved every bit of scouting. It’s it’s a tough job. Um, it’s like your own CEO on the road for the most part, but um, it helped me understand football to a in a greater capacity, you know, than I was as a player. So, I’m thankful for it. Um, it helped me be in this position right now and again, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. You mentioned coach Parcels when you were a player with the Jets. I know you’ve spoken about this before. There was a big turnaround from a 1 and5 team to the AFC Championship game. Yeah. What was that like and what how did that happen? Well, it it was actually deeper than that. I think we were one and 15 and well, two and 14 and one and 15 to end up being um I think we were nine and seven at that point, but it was a it it was tough. It was a lot of tough conversations with um not only myself but but a number of guys on the team. And listen, we had a really, really good roster. Um, things just was not clicking those first two years for me. So, um, and not just for me, but for us as a team. And then when you have a man come in like Bill Parcels that that laid the law down on how we need to do things, um, it was totally different for a lot of us. And, um, I thought he did a really good job of that. A lot of the foundational things that he did, the same things that we’re doing here, but they take time. you know, we didn’t make the playoffs that first year, but the next year I think we end up going, you know, 13 well or 12 and four or something like that. But, um, but man, it it’s it’s it’s almost like deja vu to me of really trying to get our guys to understand the foundation we need to go move forward. So, obviously star players are needed in this league and to make plays on Sundays, but how important is culture then? You kind of touched on that. Maybe that’s what coach Parcels introduced. How important is you setting the right culture now for the New York Jets? I think it’s um it’s it’s it’s um it’s everything. And culture is not only what you say, it’s culture is about the people that you bring into your organization. And listen, sometimes that takes time. I was with the team, you know, my my former team I was with, it took two years before they actually set in. And um you got you got to make sure you get the right people in the building um to make sure they understand exactly what you’re trying to build. And Bill was a master at doing that. And that’s something that, you know, we’re trying to do here. You know, as we continue to progress in what we’re doing, um, we’re teaching the way that that like we want this organization to operate. Um, listen, our guys are buying in, you know, it’s just we have to get over that hump and get us a win and you’ll see things pop for us. Yeah. I mean, we said it’s a fairy tale job for you given your history, right? But not every fairy tale has a great start. The finish may be better. So, how do you kind of stay together? How do you stay the course uh through these first few weeks of the season? Because I understand exactly um what we’re going through because I’ve been through it, you know, a number of times. And listen, if you want to get things on the right track, you have to work your ass off to get there. And it’s not always going to be pretty early on. And you have to make sure that you don’t waver from those um from those philosophies or those standards that you believe in. And the players got to see you not waver from that. And at some point it’s going to click for everybody and you’ll be able to get over that hump. So I I truly believe in that. Uh I know for a fact that we’re going to get over that hump. You know, we’re just um we’re looking for that day for it to happen. So is that important to shut out the the outside noise? Because doubts come quickly in the NFL. We’re only five weeks in, right? But but then people would have doubted Dan Campbell in Detroit and look what you guys did together with the Lions. Are you good at shutting out that noise? Well, you have no choice. me being in this league for as long as I have, me playing in the position as a player as long as I have, um I think that’s one of my strong points of not focusing on what’s being said on the outside because that’s going to happen. Listen, everybody has their opinion. That’s okay. Um but I do know the works are being put in, you know, between these men that’s that’s playing this game, between these coaches. Um and I have all the confidence in the world, all right, that we’re going to get this exactly where we need to go. It’s just, you know, it’s taking longer than we wanted, you know, and that’s okay, you know, but we’ll get this thing going where we need to go. some close losses early on. Yeah. Is learning to get over the finish line a thing in the NFL or is that are those results just reflective of the the fine margins around the Well, that’s that’s it’s everything of learning how to win and you know that’s that’s part of building this culture. That’s part of building the understanding of the players of learning exactly how you win. Yeah. Um and there’s old saying that people say that before you can start to win, you have to learn how not to lose. Okay. And that’s something that I’ I’ve learned um you know young in this coaching profession. And um and sometimes you have to teach that, you know, and you don’t want to teach anything negative, but sometimes you have to really show players like this is this is what it this is what happens when you lose games. This is how you lose games, right? So we have to get away from that. Um and that’s something that we’ve taught before, you know, but right now it’s how do you fix those issues and how do you move forward? And that’s what we’re in right now. A lot of your players, I came to training camp this summer. They all talked about we’re changing the mindset. Yeah. Is that again what you said? How does that manifest itself? How do you how do you change a mindset of a team that’s had a few losing seasons? Yeah. Well, it’s everything that we’ve just talked about. It’s the culture. Um and it’s the mindset of man, how do you win games and how you not lose games. So, um, that’s exactly what we have to do as coaches is teach and then put guys through, uh, situations in practice to where, man, these things happen in games that we have to make sure we get over the hump. Um, and we do that every practice. You know, again, it hasn’t manifested yet as far as when, but it will at some point. I know that because our guys are trusting everything that we’re doing. Has the job been everything you expected or are there curve balls that come your way? You know, it has. It has. I’ve been fortunate enough to be around um coaches that has won a lot of games. I’ve been fortunate to be around coaches that has started off where they lost a lot of games and they picked it up. So um all those guys have talked to me about that. And the one thing that they continue to say is stay the course. And that’s one thing we’re going to do as a staff is one thing we’re going to do as a team. Um and we’re not going to just continue to look back. We’re going to look forward and make sure that we do the things we have to do to get better. One of the mentors, I guess, who may have sent that message to you was Shawn Payton. He’s going to be on the other sideline on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. What did you learn from him over the years? A ton. A ton. It’s funny um because we came here the same hotel in 2008. And I think we were the first team to actually stay here. I remember. And I’ve been around long enough to remember. And we stayed the whole week. So that’s that’s one thing that I did learn when when you make this trip, man, it’s good to go out early. Um so guys get acclimated to to the the time change. I can acclimate to a new place. Um that’s one thing I did learn. And then man, you always got to fight the good fight, right? And listen, this this game, you always have to think about we can always win the game. No matter what the situation is, you can always win it. And you have to make sure you get your players to understand that mindset. Um, and that allows them to fight every play knowing it’s never over. With that in mind, there’ll be a party in the stands at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on on Sunday. Yeah. What can we expect to see from your New York Jets? Um, you can expect to see a team going to go out there and play that off. You know, the outcome this we all want to win. We do, but we also want to go out there and play a brand of football that our fans could be proud of. And I’m not going to go away from that. And I understand that we haven’t done that just yet. All right. But we’re going to get to that point to where we do play a brand of football.

  1. Aaron Glenn will right the ship, give him time, I watched the same thing in Detroit, I believe Glenn will be the better coach between him and Ben Johnson.
