And a reminder that if you ever want to be involved on a Mailbag Friday, you want your question mentioned in this episode, just respond to one of our YouTube videos, respond to my tweet that I put out on Thursday night. Uh, for the tweet, you don’t need to worry about titling it. But for YouTube, before you comment anything, be sure to put mailbag Friday so it’s easy for me to find. If you don’t do that, it’s hard to go through, you know, 50 and 60 notifications on a Friday morning to try to find the question that you would be asking. So, as long as you do that, I feel very confident I will be able to answer your question. Let’s kick things off here from Blae. What would a trade for Jiren Durant look like? Feels like he’s the perfect fit. Uh, middle of the order bat with the athleticism to thrive in Kaufman. Well, we saw that for Boston at the deadline. Jiren Duran’s asking price was astronomically high and not just for the Royals. It was for a lot of teams out there. I want to say it was the Padres’s that called about Jiren Duran and they were asking for pretty much every top prospect at every level and a couple of guys in San Diego which the Padres’s as aggressive as AJ Pller is he decided not to make that deal. He was aggressive in some other deals, including with the Royals and Freddy Ferb, but that was something they were turned away by. With Jiren Durant, yes, I believe he’d be a good fit for Kaufman Stadium. I believe that the Royals would put him toward the top of the lineup as opposed to the middle of the lineup, but he is coming off a down year compared to what he did in 2024. And as long as that asking price stays pretty high, he’s a player I’d probably stay away from cuz he’s coming up on a contract year and he’s almost 30. So if he was 25, 26, I’d be all for it. But now that he’s coming off of a lesser year than he had in 24, he’s approaching age 30 and I know Boston’s going to be asking the moon for him. Not sure he would be the best trade candidate for the Royals. If they got him, I’m hoping it wouldn’t cost too much. But knowing how Boston’s been operating with with trying to throw him out there for or at least at the deadline, what was being reported about what Boston was asking for, just not sure that JJ Belell and the Royal Royals would line up. Tom’s question, any shot Vance Wilson gets a managerial job. I’d guess it would need to be someplace like Colorado or Washington in my opinion where he can get his feet wet with a young group. Here’s the funny thing about Vance Wilson. We look at him as a third base coach and we say, “Oh, well, he’s not good at his job. He has some crazy sends.” And even when he does send a player correctly and they beat the throw, we credit the player. Oh, man. They they got a good jump. They got a good read off the ball. They had a good slide at home plate. But we don’t always give credit to Vance Wilson. It’s the same way it goes for, right, hitting coaches. We’ve had the criticism for Alex Zumal. Player does well, players credit. Player doesn’t do well, it’s the hitting coach’s fault. or the offense doesn’t do well, it’s the hitting coach’s fault. With Vance Wilson, I have always heard that he is an incredibly bright baseball man and the players really love Vance Wilson, old and new, right? So, he has a lot of respect in that clubhouse and it’s not just in Kansas City. I mean, he wouldn’t be considered for managerial jobs if other organizations and baseball people didn’t believe in in what he was capable of doing. So, I have always heard great things about Vance Wilson. He’s a good leader. players can gravitate toward him and even though he’s had some questionable sends, uh I I don’t know if it’s it’s going to deter people from making him a manager. Uh so I would say that he’s got a really good shot. Though it feels very Pedro Grafalike and Grafal did get a job eventually with the White Socks and it was a a dead-end job when it was all said and done because there wasn’t much talent left. Uh but Pedro Grafall was mentioned in managerial, you know, job openings for like five years before he finally got one in Chicago. So, my gut tells me he won’t get it this go around. And he’s not, you know, a 35 to 40 year old coach. I mean, he’s getting up there in age. He’s not incredibly old. He’s in the the middle, if you will. So, he doesn’t have a ton of time left to be considered a firstear manager, right, to take over an organization that needs a rebuild. But, my gut tells me that he’s not going to get picked in this goound. But if the Royals do well next year, it wouldn’t surprise me if he gets picked up by somebody else that will be looking for a new manager. Next questions coming in from Aiden. What’s more realistic for the Royals? Resigning Yaz to play left field with Kaggs in right and you find a platoon hitter for Diaz or the Royals go out and trade for a Jiren Durant or Joe Adele to play left field and have Kags in right? I would say probably the former there uh just because of the free agent market and who I believe will actually be available in trade. We already discussed Jiren Durant, so I’ll pivot to Joe Adele. Joe Adele was somebody that we talked about last week on our mailbag Friday or mail mailbag Sunday, whatever it was. I feel he would be a great addition to the middle of the lineup, 30 plus home run power, can handle all three outfield spots, but are the Angels going to give him up? I mean, the Angels stiff armed everybody with Taylor Ward, who’s now coming up on a contract year, and thought they were closer to contention than they really were. Now, they’re going to be going into 2026 with a new manager. And maybe that manager is going to want a lot of these guys to stick around. If you can line up a deal for Joe Adele, absolutely. If you can still line up a deal for Taylor Ward, absolutely. But the likelier scenario, in my opinion, is they give Mikey Strenky a one-year deal. They find a platoon bat for him. Jack Kaggle owns their right fielder, and then you try to add more depth to that lineup. Still, I expect them to make a big move. So, I don’t see Yaz as that everyday player. So, maybe it would be a player like Joe Adell or a player like Taylor Ward. Next question is coming from Mark. Which players do you think the Royals will non- tender? Uh, there were a couple of uh groups out there, a couple of um sites that did a good article on non-tender candidates. So, I don’t want to steal any of their content. I want to give them credit out there. Um, I know that Kings of Kaufman did one on the five non-tender candidates. So, if you haven’t seen that article, strongly suggest you to go and read it. Just so you know, you have a good uh baseline as to who the Royals will probably be looking to non-tender. You’ve got your obvious candidates. MJ Melendez is one. Kyle Wright is one of them. They’re both mentioned in the article. And then you get the maybe on the fence like a Bailey Falter. You traded for Bailey Falter. He was terrible for the Royals. But JJ Bolo and everybody in that front office always expressed the importance of having starting pitching depth. And prior to coming to Kansas City, Bayiley Falter had just fine numbers in Pittsburgh. Maybe you don’t want to get rid of that, but he’s got to make the roster is is the problem there. That’s why you have these non-tender candidates. If it’s either they’re in Kansas City on opening day or they’re going to be DFA, right? So Bailey Falter feels likelier to be DFAD uh than making the roster just because there’s too many arms that I would rather have in Kansas City than Bailey Falter. I would rather have a Steven Kick or Ryan Bert pitching out of the bullpen than Bailey Falter. I’d rather have Daniel Lynch and Anel Serpa than Bailey Falter. So I would lean toward him being a non-tender candidate. And then Jonathan India is another one that we certainly have been talking about before. uh he will be making near 10 million next year, but I I see the Royals wanting to keep him over non-tendering. If if he’s not to be a Royal next year, I would probably guess that they’re trying to move him via trade. I don’t see them just non-tendering Jonathan Indian and getting nothing for him. He’s either going to be on this roster or they’re going to try to trade him elsewhere and get some type of value for him. But some of those other guys, the the Sam Long who’s mentioned in the article, you’ve got MJ Melendez, Kyle Wright, those feel like no-brainers at this point. Kyle Wright can’t stay healthy. James MacArthur is coming off of the the season ending surgery that he had. So, he hasn’t pitched since 2024. He wasn’t that good in 2024. A lot of arms in that bullpen. And then you get to MJ Melendez. I mean, need I say more? And unfortunately, my my patience has run out with MJ Melendez. That was a career worst year coming off of what was his career worst year. Doesn’t really feel like he’s got the best possible position. He was fine in AAA. If he is to get non-tendered, I could see him taking the minor league spot in Kansas City because I’m not sure who would take a chance on MJ Melendez considering the the offensive numbers he put up last year. But you never know, maybe he goes elsewhere and figures it out. I will say this, I hope nothing but the best for MJ Melendez and I hope he catches on somewhere. He’s just run out of time simply in Kansas City. We’ll take our first break of the show when we come back. Still a lot of questions to get to next on Locked on Royals. And I’ll go to Sunday Night Football right here in Kansas City. I’ll be at the game for the Chiefs and the Lions. I will take the under on that prime time matchup. Let’s kick things over to YouTube here. Question number one coming from Logan. If you’re the Royals front office, are you not doing everything you can to go out and get Kyle Sters this off season? him, Jack Jensen, three youngans that could give you 30 plus home runs per year. Seems like a no-brainer to put Blake Mitchell plus other package together for him. I always say this when we talk about young talented players on teams that are not playoff teams. Now, Miami kind of finished near where the Royals were last year. I mean, they had a tremendous surge in the second half. They were playing well with that young core. Uh Clayton McCulla did a phenomenal job over there in year number one in Miami. It’s hard to build a consistent winner there. Um, I always root for Miami just kind of in the background because I missed the days of when Florida had the the logo Florida Marlins. They played it at Sunlife, uh, you know, and and it was just a team that was easy to root for, for lack of a better term. So, with Miami, yes, it’s hard to win there, but they were very adamant about we’re not trading away young talent just because we’re not there quite yet. They would much rather try to build around those young players and Kyle Sters was a coveted piece of their team last year and they swore him off, you know, basically a week or two before the deadline. They said he’s not going anywhere. We don’t care what you’re coming to offer us. We’re not trading Kyle Sters. So, as much as the Royals would like to go out there and get someone like him, I feel that he’s completely off the table. Miami seems like they are digging their heels in and they are just wanting to keep this young core around, build around him, add pieces and try to compete in the National League and the National League East. So, as much as you may like Kyle Sters, I don’t see him going anywhere. I mean, Miami, you know, has a has a pretty firm grasp on him. You know, they feel they’ve hit on a star, and the last thing you want to do if you feel you’re somewhat close is trade that star for prospects when you already have a couple of young guys that you’re trying to build around. Now Sters is 27 28. So he’s not a 22 23 year old like some of the guys in that lineup, but he’s their their star piece they want to build around and I don’t see them entertaining any offers this off season. This one is coming from C. Smith. What do you think the Royals will favor in five years, pitching or offense? With key components of the pitching staff being at the tail end of their career, do you think the pitching staff will have a noticeable statistical regression in the next couple of years? Number two, do you think 2025 Bobby is a more accurate representation of what his career stats could end up as or do you think it will essentially it is essentially it’s a down year? Uh number three, do you think Blake Mitchell has a future role with the Royals? And if so, how important is is his role? Uh can the Royals replicate the offensive production and situational hitting they got last year in the near future? And who do you think ends up having a more memorable career, Kags or Jensen? Okay, let’s start things off with question number one there. Who are the Royals favor, pitching or offense? It’ll be pitching. I just see the Royals finding success through pitching. They’ve had it now the last two years with the winning record. One resulting in a postseason appearance and postseason win. You need to add to the offense. You need to improve that offense, but this seems like a team that’s always going to be built on pitching. That’s for the now and that’s also five years down the road. Uh when it comes to uh the pitching staff having some regression, I can see that. I said yesterday that I don’t see Seth Luga or Michael Walker replicating what they did in 24. You’re just hoping they can be serviceable number three and number fours in the rotation for the next two years. Uh for Bobby, I actually think that, you know, this was a down year by his standards. I expect more power. Um I expect him to hit 300 or higher pretty much every year of his career. So even though this is not a down year by every player’s, you know, standards, I I expect Bobby Wood Jr. to be better next year. and better moving forward throughout his career. Uh Blake Mitchell’s future, it is a little bit clouded just because you have Carter Jensen who seems to be the next catcher in line and Blake Mitchell is not coming up to be a backup catcher. So, I think it’s likelier he gets traded at some point, then he comes up to Kansas City and competes for playing time with Carter Jensen. And then, uh the last two year, can the Royals replicate the offensive production and situational hitting they got last year in the near future? Possible, but it kind of comes down to which players you bring in. They absolutely need to raise the floor of this lineup. And lastly, who has a better career when it’s all said and done, Kaggs or Jensen? I would still lean toward Kaggs because this is a top 10 pick. This is a top 100 prospect. This is a guy with 50 home run potential. He’s still got to do it. Potential is a very, no loose term out there. It’s a dangerous word. And Carter Jensen, a local kid, flashed some brilliance uh in the final month of September. But if my my gut is right and he turns out being what a lot of scouts have said about Kaggle, then I’ll still lean more toward Jack Kagle. A lot of questions there, but happy to answer all of them there. Those were good questions as well. This one’s from Justin. Day one for a chance to be on the podcast. Mailbag question. Would you trade Chris Bubich for a good outfield bat? Someone like Seya Suzuki. Also, please check in on your lockdown Phillies friends because after today’s air, they’re going through it. Absolutely. That was a brutal and crushing loss they suffered at Dodger Stadium last night. Uh Orion Kirkering doesn’t get much worse than that. You feel for the guy. He’s 24 years old. Just panicked in that moment. So I picked Philly to get to the World Series and win it. They win one postseason game and that’s just kind of the way it goes. As for entertaining a trade, yeah, I mean I would look into something like that. You’ve got Noah Cameron and his emergence. You have Ryan Berard and Steven Kick. If you’re going to get a middle of the order bat, it’s probably going to take one of your starting pitchers and a prospect. Chris Bubich is coming up on a contract year. He feels like the guy that you would maybe try to leverage a bit more, but he’s also coming off of not pitching in the second half due to injury. So, is his value at its peak? It’s not. Uh, you’re going to need to, you know, maybe start him out in the rotation for the first couple of months, then you’d entertain something at the deadline. But I could see some teams pushing back and going, “We don’t know his health.” You know, he had to recover from Tommy John in 2024, then he had a rotator cuff strain in 2025. We’re not willing to give up a key piece to our lineup, especially a contender for a guy that may or may not be healthy for us in 2026. Next one is coming from Rean. This season, we had so many long stretches in the season where we played really bad baseball. For example, winning one game at home in the month of June. What adjustments over the offseason will the team need to make to make sure something like this doesn’t happen next season? Yeah, I go back to June and that’s what lost the Royals their season. That’s the reason they’re not in the postseason. And it’s not they needed to win, you know, 15 to 20 games in that month. They just needed to simply win a few more. I mean, you think about how different things would have been in September if they didn’t win one game at home in the month of June. So, how do you avoid something like that happening again? You got to improve the roster. It It’s as simple as that. You have to improve the depth on this team. You need to find a way to fill all the holes in the lineup that you constantly dealt with in 2025. You need to cut bait with guys that aren’t cutting it anymore. And that’s what was so frustrating early on in the season is they were giving opportunities to guys that clearly were not cut out for starting every day anymore. So, if you’re going to add to this team, which I expect them to in the offseason, you got to raise the floor significantly. Because if you can raise the floor significantly and you’re not throwing guys out there that hit sub 200, that for some guys hit under 100, that’s not going to happen. If you build a roster that just has the depth, has five to six to seven above average bats, they’re going to win more than one game at home an entire month, right? You’re not going to have that volatility. you’re not going to have that inconsistency. And if the Royals can get that done, I expect them to prove improve in those areas. And that’s what the focus needs to be in 2026 is rounding out this roster. You can’t be so topheavy because if you are, you are still going to run into some stretches like that. Uh, next one is coming from Matt. Any idea what the offseason process will be like for guys like Jack and Carter? Will they play anywhere like Arizona or will they just train? I’d like to see a guy like Vinnie take Jack under his wing to help him this winter. Um, I know that Carter Jensen’s playing in the Dominican Winter League, I believe. I saw that yesterday. Jack Kaggleon, I’m not sure if they’re not playing in any winter league. I know Jack was in the Arizona Fall League last year. U, they’re just going to be working out in the offseason, maybe working out with some of the players that are on the team, but I wouldn’t hate that whatsoever. Vinnie’s an established big league guy uh that has been under the pressure of performing as a young player. Jack Kaggleon dealing with the same stuff. But uh if he’s not going to go play in a winter league, I’d imagine that he’ll be working pretty hard this off season to try to earn a spot on the opening day roster. We’ll take our final break of the show. When we come back, we’ll wrap it up with our final set of questions next on Lockdown Royals. You are tuning to Lockdown Royals on the Lockdown Podcast Network. I’m your host Jack Johnson and you can find me on Twitter at johnnyj_15. Want to tell you about our final sponsor of the week in Rouette. Guys, you’ve probably heard of Viagra or Seialis. Maybe you’ve even tried them. But if you’re looking for something beyond the usual pill, it’s time to meet Rouiet Golong. That’s exactly where Rouette’s Golong comes in. This isn’t just another ED pill. It’s a total gamecher for confidence. Ready to level up your confidence in the bedroom? And make sure to use our code so they know that we sent you. Let’s kick things off with Spoons’s question. Multiple people have brought this up, but chance is the most loud this team can hit a high fastball. Is there any way this gets fixed? Uh it’s been a problem for years. So asking about hitting the high fast ball, maybe it’s a philosophy thing, maybe it’s the type of hitter uh that some of these guys are. Uh but I would say that does need to get improved and improved as early as next year. You cannot be a poor hitting fastball team, no matter where the ball is pitched, right? I can understand uh not being the best offspe hitting team. I can understand not being the best change up hitting team or curveball slider, whatever it would be. Fast balls, you got to be able to hit those, especially up in the zone. You’ve got some guys that are bigger bodies at the plate, right? Jack Kagleion, Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino. Those are guys that need to be able to hit balls up in the zone because if you can hit the ball up in the zone and you can elevate, you can get that ball in the air, it’s going to go a long way. So whether that be the type of hitter, the philosophy, I agree with you. It has to change. You cannot be a poor fast ball hitting team and expect to be in the middle of the pack or top 10. I mean, that’s a big reason why the Royals were bottom five this past season. Next one is coming from Elizabeth. What benefits would the Royals uh have if Jensen earned Rookie of the Year? Well, you get an extra pick. So, if you have somebody that spends the year up at the big league level, wins rookie of the year, you do get an additional pick after the first round in the following draft. So that would be a huge benefit for the Royals. We saw the Mariners get that with Rodriguez, Julie Rodriguez in 2022. Uh the A’s are going to get one with Nick Curts uh for the season that he put together. So if Carter Jensen can get it next year, you can expect uh the Royals to have an extra draft pick uh in 2027. Uh that would be. So, first things first, you would take just the rookie of the year honors because Carter Jensen would be thriving at the big league level, but you also get rewarded for having somebody that young on your big league roster and and playing well in his first full season of Major League Baseball. This one’s coming from Gabe. With all the options the Royals have for starting pitching, if you had to put together a starting rotation for next season, assuming that everyone is healthy, uh, who would that be? Um, I would probably say it’s going to be Cole Reagan’s again. I would say Seth Lugo and Waka, though we talked about this last week or the week before. I’d want to stagger it a little bit with Bubic and Cameron. So, those would be the other two I’d have in there. So, maybe I would go Cole Rigins, Seth Lugo, uh, Noah Cameron, Michael Walka, Chris Bubich. can stagger the lefty, righty, lefty, righty, lefty instead of having back-to-back days with a righty or back-to-back days uh with a lefty. So, that would probably be um my picks there. Next one is coming from I might have lost my place here. Nope, I got it back. I thought uh my notifications had all been erased there. This one’s from Steve as usual. Wonderful show. Thank you for the kind words. Mailbag question. Shouldn’t Alex Zumwalt be released as hitting coach along with the two assistants that we fired? Let’s uh face it. The offense was stagnant at times and at the bottom of the league. Well, I know a lot of you have been upset about the Royals retaining Alex Zumwalt. It’s very clear though that the Royals view it as a non-Alec Zumalt problem or at least he doesn’t deserve the majority of the blame which is why they decided to let go of Kone Duran and then Joe Dylan. uh they feel that Alec Zumalt is still the right guy to operate this hitting staff and if you can bring in some voices that can help him out a little bit more you can get the most out of it right because we are only going to see the onfield stuff right we are going to see what’s broadcasted we are going to look at those numbers and say clearly it’s not working but behind the scenes the Royals clearly like something with Alex Zumal and feel that he is well prepared to benefit a lot of these hitters I mean he did it with Michael Garcia in the offseason last year. So, there’s reason to believe he can do it with more hitters on this roster, but you need other guys to help him out and maybe better voices than Joe Dylan and Ke Dire were. I don’t know completely how all the players feel about the hitting coaches, you know, on the staff. Uh, so maybe they all really love working for Alec Zumalt. They just feel that maybe some some other outside voices can really benefit this team as a whole. So, that’s why I believe they made that decision. And it’s always not as simple as bad numbers, you got to fire everybody. Maybe you want to keep somebody that you feel can still be a good part of that coaching staff and add other pieces that would really complement them in a big way. Uh, next one is coming from Bryce. Would you rather trade for a stud outfitter like Adele or Duran or trade for a stud second baseman like Brendan Donovan? I feel Brendan Donovan would be a safer pick than Jiren Duran or Joe Adele. But if you wanted to really get that middle of the order bat, I feel Joe Adele is the best fit. He’s young coming off a 30 plus home run season, can play all three outfield spots, I would love an addition like that. If I wanted to be safer and know what I’m getting at second base and a top of the order bat, I would go with Brendan Donovan. This one is coming from Justin. Uh, which Royals minor league hitter and pitcher do you see making their big league debuts next season? I will go with uh Stephen Zobach, Eric Sarinola as two pitchers that can make their big league debut. And then as for a hitter, I’ll go with Luca Tresh. Uh, you know, a catcher that might be able to come up and take a Luke Mey uh like role. I feel that he could be somebody that gets a chance in Kansas City next season. Uh, A&B’s question, agree or disagree, Jack? If simply putting the ball in play is still a viable strategy in today’s MLB, it would require a team that isn’t one of the worst base running teams uh in the league in order to execute. We were atrocious at that all last season. Even our dedicated steel guys got picked off like five times. We are at a point where our next season roster construction seems like it will align with a three outcome type of philosophy. But we are we have been and likely will be trying to replicate the 2015 Royal strategy in the 2026 season. Yeah, if you are going to be a contact team, you got to have good speed and high IQ base running. The Royals struggled with that last year. A lot of guys were thrown out. Um whether it be their own fault, whether it just be not not getting the best jump at first base and trying to swipe second. They do have to get better in that regard. Absolutely. But I just would hope they would scrap that philosophy entirely. I don’t see the value in just putting the ball in play with soft contact. I would rather see a lot of pitches, do more damage, high OPS, lot of home runs, even if that means more strikeouts in your lineup. And uh this one is coming from Jared and we’ll wrap us up. Could Pete Fairbanks and Jorge Palano be likely players for the Royals to sign this off season? Keep up the great work. Hadn’t thought about Jorge Palano. We’ll probably talk about him at some point in the offseason. Pete Fairbanks would make a lot of sense. He’s got some local ties here uh to Missouri. Uh, but I would say that the Royals aren’t really in a position where they need to be acquiring bullpen help. Maybe you try to bring in one guy, but I said this last week that there’s a lot of arms. There’s a lot of depth out there in the bullpen. I would rather spend the money on offensive help. And as for Jorge Palano coming off a great year in Seattle, that’s a tough ballpark to succeed in offensively. And u I could see a world in which the Royals would want to entertain him. They’ve had tons of history in facing him when he was in Minnesota, but they also do have multiple second baseman on the roster. And I’ve gotten some push back on Brennan Donovan. And then uh uh who was the other one? Luis Arise, I believe, for the second baseman, saying, “Well, you already have second baseman. You don’t need to acquire another second baseman. You need to get outfield help.” And unfortunately, that wouldn’t be Jorge Palano. Well, that’ll do it for another edition of Mailbag Friday on Locked Royals and the Lockdown Podcast Network. I saw a post on social media (take with a grain of salt) saying that KC have been in talks with Boston about their outfield stash.
Duran ix to expensive. Rather trade for Cowser, Stowers or Wallner
Would rather get Ward instead of Adell or Yaz
Long, Melendez,Wright, Falter and India get non tendered
Stowers,Edwards and Cabrera would be the dream mega trade for KC
Jrnsen has better career barring injury over Cags
Trade Boobs and/or Lugo and prospects for that OF bat
Jensen will not win ROY as long as Perez is on the tram and taking starts from Jensen at catcher
Starting rotation
Ragans
Cameron
Bergert
Wacha
Kolek
(Trade Lugo and Boobs)
Depth
Marsh
Avila
Trade for both an OF bat and 2B
Cerantola and Tresh make debuts in 26
Fairbanks or Soto eould be good pen additions
Do you think that a bubic for JoJo adell and maybe a prospect would be worth it
Why don’t we get rob refsnyder Romy Gonzales then get Matt wallner
Day two of asking for chance on the pod
