So, let’s get into the Pelicans 10797, a little bit closer than you’d like win over Melbourne United, but it’s worth noting that Zion Williamson did not play in the second half of this game. And look, he didn’t need to because he looked good. You’ve wanted actions behind the words that he said at media day in the off season. You wanted actions kind of behind the new look physique, him coming in in the best shape of his career. You saw it in this game. I told you in yesterday’s show that this game is more about the eye test than the stats. And that was basically everyone passing, including Zion Williamson. 15 points on five of eight shooting. Went to the line seven times, five assists, two steals, two rebounds. He looked good. More than the counting stats that I just referenced there. There are two things that really jump out to me from this game by Zion Williamson. One is physically he just looked quicker. There was a little bit more explosiveness to the way that he played. Just everything was slightly faster. The movements were a little bit more lightning explosive quick. And that’s what you wanted to see from him. Did this new look physique translate to the production on the court in terms of things being a little bit better? And if you say Zion Williamson was 5 10% better in this game, moving a little bit better than he has in the past, I agree with you. That’s all you’re looking for because 5 to 10% better for him might not seem like a big number, but that’s pretty significant given how good the dude is already. And if you’re finally getting like the NBA version of Zion Williamson, the league better look out because he’s going to be a problem. He was quick off the dribble getting downhill attacking. Those fast twitch movements, your initial move to try and blow past your defender worked. He’s not playing against NBA players, but the fact is it looked pretty good in this game. More than that, which might be the more impressive thing from him, is the leadership that he showed in this game. Lyall Swenbank was was there boots on the ground. Pelicans podcaster, I asked him to see if Zion was going to warm up. He got there early enough to find out. Zion Williamson went through a normal shootaround warm-up before the layup lines, which he hasn’t always done. That’s an encouraging sign. That is a big important sign to me. You also saw Lyall tweet out late in the game after Zion had been pulled and wasn’t playing in the second half that he was active on the bench. He was engaged with the rookies in particular trying to coach them up during timeouts when there were breaks in play, trying to just kind of own show ownership over this team a little bit more here, I think. And you you saw it at least in the first preseason game. So that’s a really important thing. You know, in his interview after the game, he said, “Everyone did their thing, especially my young guys. My young guys, hear that for a second. Have we ever heard that kind of level of leadership from Zion Williamson?” Not really. This is actions, right? Those are words, too. But they’re actions as well. This is him doing things differently than he’s done before, and that’s been a really needed thing for him to do. So, he looked fantastic. stats. H whatever. I don’t really care about those. It was more the eye test and Zion Williamson passed with flying colors here. Another player that passed with flying colors in this one was Trey Murphy the third who came out and at times looked like a number one option for this team. 18 points on seven of 13 shooting. The three-point shot wasn’t falling. Two of seven there. Three steals, one rebound. you know, him scoring at different levels is what he had been working on and kind of what you wanted to see from him in this game. He opened the scoring with a mid-range jumper, showing off that he had been working on that. Try to be more than just three-pointers and dunks, but having that kind of mid-range game to use when you need to. He only took two mid-range shots in this one. You want him to have that because it’s self-creation. He’s kind of been a little bit reliant on others to create his own shot outside of straight line drives. him adding that mid-range jumper in, which is an entirely different shooting mechanic than a three-point shot. So, it’s not like, well, he could he makes threes, so he should be able to do this. It’s not quite as easy as that. This is someone who showed off more of that selfcreation, whether it was driving to the basket and using different moves to get there. Something that he has been improving steadily on over the past two years. You’ve really seen that growth from him. But in this game, trying to kind of be more of an all-around score, he looked like the number two guy on the team. And that was a very encouraging thing to see. Trey Murphy looks like he is on a mission this year. And I like that the aggression was there in every single minute he played. It would have been very easy for this Pelicans team to be like, “We’re not playing NBA players. Let’s just kind of take it easy. We had a long flight. We’re a little jetlag, tired, whatever it might be. We don’t want to totally do this.” And they came out and played with the right kind of intensity. So to see that leadership from Zion Williamson, the intensity from Zion Williamson, the growth from Trey Murphy in the offensive game, that’s highly encouraging. You know, a lot of people, Patrick Beverly of all people’s tweeting out, don’t sleep on the Pelicans. Everyone’s been sleeping on this team. Pretty much everyone has been sleeping on this team. But in this game, and again, it’s not against NBA opponents. Really keep that in mind. Grain of salt with some of this. The That’s why you’re looking at the eye test. The eye tests look good. And seeing that from your top two guys, two and a half guys, right, Zion, Trey, we’ll we’ll get to Jordan Pool in a second here. So, top one and a half guys, I guess, is what I’m trying to say. I like that, right? Your stars are what’s going to win you games. The Pelicans can talk about depth all they want, but if Zion plays like this and looks like this, then you’re going to be in good shape. If Trey Murphy takes a leap, this team will be in good shape, too. And if Jordan Ps like the dynamic guard that he was in this game, and we’ll talk about him next, I thought he looked great. That’s really encouraging, too. Zion Williamson said on Saturday’s game, which is 1000 p.m. Central, so we don’t have to wake up early. So, that’s great. That he hopefully will be getting more minutes. So, I think we’ll kind of start to kind of get a bigger picture. It’s going to be better to evaluate these games as like both of them kind of combined versus just doing one at a time. But we’re doing what we can here. So, we only got one game. But overall, the team looked really, really good. Really, really good. I was happy with that. You know, they’re look there a couple turnovers, things like that that they need to clean up. This team has very little continuity together. So, they’re going to have turnovers. They’re going to have moments where they don’t look particularly great because a lot of these guys haven’t played together. And also, you have a couple rookies in key roles. Jeremiah Fears, the team had 16 turnovers. Fears had five. Right? If you take out fears there and you add one to his thing instead of five, all of a sudden you’re looking at 12 turnovers and that’s a fine number for the Pelicans to have instead of the 16. Three-point shooting was also a little bit interesting in this one. I’m going to talk more about that in the third segment of today’s show because that’s something I’m keeping an eye on and how you balance that and I’ve got some thoughts that I want to share with y’all. So, we got a whole lot more to cover here in today’s episode of Locked On Pelican. So coming up next, Jordan P, Jeremiah Fears. Let’s look at how those guys played and also some of the three-point shooting that’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. But I appreciate all the international listeners as well. Y’all have been awesome and I appreciate you making lockdown Pelicans part of your day and spending some of your time here as we talk about these games. The focus will be on the Pelicans, but it’s really cool that the Pelicans are the first NBA team to play in Australia like this. For your second listen, maybe you’re a Saints fan. Locked on Saints. Ross Jackson making sense of everything black and gold. Are they going to get their first win this weekend? they have a chance. Ross Jackson’s going to let you know over at the Locked On Saints podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. So, let’s continue to look at the Pelicans win over Melbourne United. That is 10797. Two other players I really want to focus on. We’re kind of going through the big stories here. Zion and Trey kind of being number one in my opinion. The next kind of two guys up though is Jordan Pool and Jeremiah Fierce. Kind of a revamped back court for the New Orleans Pelicans. You know, the the stats don’t look like the prettiest here. Jordan P, three of nine from the field, one of six from deep, 11 points, four assists, four rebounds, but he got to the line five times. To actually get 11 points on nine shot attempts when you’re three of nine speaks to the way that he was playing. And this is why they traded for him. One of the reasons why they traded for him, he has more self-creation than CJ McCullum did. CJ’s more of a spot-up guy, but the Pelicans realize they need more guys who can kind of just get their own shot, create their own shot. Jordan P can do that, right? Jordan Pool is a bucket getter. It’s as simple as that. And when his shot isn’t falling, what he decided to do instead was, “All right, I’m going to attack the basket.” That is going to be an identity of this team, a strength of this team all year. And we’ll talk about it with Jeremiah Fears in a second. Zion Williamson is a line drive guy that’s going to score in the paint at the rim, get fouled, go to the line. Take advantage of that. Zion Williamson can single-handedly get a team into the bonus. Meaning everybody at that point in time can then just get easy free throws, which is the most efficient shot in the NBA. Might not be the most fun to watch, but if you’re going to the line a ton, you’re likely winning your games. This is a big big big advantage for the Pelicans. when I’ve talked about what is your win condition. Getting to the line a bunch and making your free throws is a win condition in every NBA game for New Orleans. So Jordan Pool playing that downhill attacking style that this team needed more of. Yeah, he fits in here. He looked really good trying to do that in create. His shot profile in this game, even though the three-pointers weren’t falling, is great. Basically in the restricted area or from three. I love that. I love that. that works with a player like Zion Williamson. And that three-point shot will fall because the dude is a good three-point shooter, particularly off the bounce, off the dribble when he has the ball in his hands. And when that’s not working or when Zion’s off the court, he plays a little bit more downhill, driving to the rim, trying to score that way and forcing the defense to rotate. When you attack the basket and you beat your man, someone’s going to rotate over to cover and try and take away the rim. Now, the defense is in rotation and all of a sudden that means someone’s going to be open if you keep moving the ball and that’s why you see Jordan P with four assists in this game and just 20 minutes of action. That’s a very, very good debut I think from him. It just adds a level of dynamic guard play that the Pelicans were missing last year, the past couple of years really. When you look at how Fierce plays, how pool plays, they haven’t really had that type of guard on this team in a very, very long time. So, I’m excited to see more of Jordan Pool. The teammates obviously love him, and he was key to the Pelicans playing with a lot of tempo. We talked about pace and tempo in yesterday’s show. Pace is the number of possessions you get in a game. Simple as that. Tempo is what you do in the half court. There was tempo in the half court. The ball was moving. At times, it was stagnant. But again, none of these guys have really played together. This is almost an entirely new team. That’s going to take a little bit of time to build that chemistry, but you played with pace. You played with tempo in the half court of zipping the ball around moving. No one was trying to be as stagnant as possible like just standing there. You had moments of it, but overall you saw the vision for this new look Pelicans team and what they’re trying to be in the half court. They want to get in transition and run more and they did and they did a very good job of that. though the transition wasn’t the best that I’ve seen, but they did try and get out in run two, but this team definitely was doing the right things in the half court of playing with tempo, of passing the ball, trying to keep the defense off balance. You know, what doesn’t move is dead, basically. So, you need to keep moving in the NBA at the half court. This team did that. I’m encouraged by that. You’re going to also look at Jeremiah Fears’ box score and be like, “What the heck? This dude sucks.” Someone even tweeted at me, he’s a bust, worst pick ever. And it’s like, all right, we’re not going to do that after one preseason game. The stats aren’t pretty. Three of 15 from the field, 0 for six from three, seven points, five turnovers. It’s not great, right? Three rebounds. He had, I think, one assist in, sorry, three assists, three rebounds. I’m not worried about Jeremiah fears at all. The fact that he’s taking the right shot attempts is what’s encouraging to me. You know, you might look at three for 15 and be like, “Oh boy, that’s not good.” H he took 1, two, three, four, five, six, seven. It’s six or seven. I can’t see my It’s too early. My eyes are still blurry. Um shots at the rim in the restricted area. That’s an incredible number. You see the shiftiness, you see the speed from him, and you know that eventually those shots are going to fall. It takes a little bit of time to just adjust to a different level and he hasn’t really played much basketball at least in a competitive setting since March outside of summer league. He’s going to need a little bit of time. The fact that he took six three-pointers, he knows that he needs to shoot and that he needs to try and space the court and take those shots. That’s how you get better right now. I was encouraged by what we saw from him here. Took two mid-rangers and he made two of them. That’s encouraging too that there’s a little bit of range in there from him. But overall, his shot profile is pretty. It’s what you want to see from him. Play downhill, attack the basket. You know, he had moments or two where he looked decent enough on defense. That’ll come with time. You know, we’ll talk about this next week. I want to do a deeper dive on what to expect from Jeremiah Fierce this season. I’m actually looking I I have a big Excel spreadsheet with all the data and thing. I you guys are going to love this show and I want to set the right expectations for him. We probably need to dial them back on what you’re expecting from him his rookie year just given how rookie guards tend to contribute at the NBA level. But he’s the process for Jeremiah Fears is good. We talk about process over results. He his process is correct. The results should come from that and that’s what I want to see from him. For rookies especially, are you doing the right things? you are cool. As you make little tweaks, they will steadily improve till it needs to be where you want it to be. And you will see that from Jeremiah fears again. O for six from three. Don’t care. I like that he’s fearless in shooting rather than getting in his head being like, “Oh, I can’t make threes. Let me do something else.” He’s not doing that. He’s trying to still do the right things even when he’s kind of nervous about it maybe. But he has zero fears for it. So, I love seeing that from the rookie here. The six three-pointers are important, too, because the Pelicans are going to need to shoot threes. They don’t have a ton of shooters on this squad, right? You have Trey Murphy, you have Jordan P. Maybe Fears. You know, Herb didn’t play in this game. He had an injured ankle that happened in practice, so they held him out as a precaution. You know, no Derek Queen either in this one, but they’re going to need to shoot threes. So, Fears is going to need to contribute in that area. They took, what was the final number here? It was in the third. It was in the 20s, like 29 threes. Oh, 33 threes. That’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be. They took some kind of in garbage time and later. Um, you know, they had 17 at halftime. I think that’s going to be about the right number. This isn’t a team that’s going to hit 40 53 threes per game, but can they get to like 34 to 36? I think that’s kind of the sweet spot for them. They’re going to need to balance that. You saw them at least attempting to get threes up in this game, and I do think that’s an important thing. So, I I liked what we saw from the team overall when it comes to that. What about the center battle? Cavon Looney started over Eve Meisi. Did one play better than the other? They were both used in different ways. Let’s look at that and a couple of other performances from players as we keep talking about the Pelicans first preseason game. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel. The NFL season is here. The NBA season is here, too. So, please subscribe wherever you get your podcast and join over 11,000 Pelicans fans on YouTube as well. And become an everyday means you listen Monday through Friday to the Lockdown Pelicans podcast. If you’re an Everydayer, let me know in the comments down below. Let me know if you woke up to watch the game at 4:30. Let me know if you’re living in Australia and you were there in person and what you’re feeling about the team being in your country here because I do still think this is a really cool thing. So, let’s start to wrap up the show here. I’m running a little bit long, so we’re going to do this quick. Gavvon Looney started over Eve Mei. They used him in a very interesting way, but I actually thought Mei played better. Three blocks in this one, showing off expanded touch down low. I think he just gives the team a little bit more of what they need. They need a little bit more defense. They need a little bit more rim protection than what Looney is going to give you. And if Mi keeps showing off that touch that he has around the rim, getting better uh with that, I’m very encouraged by what we saw from him. you know, if he can be a lob threat, a highf flyier, that opens up kind of a different level of vertical spacing for this Pelican squad. Looney was used in some really interesting offensive sets from the start. They like him kind of as a passer and what he’s going to be capable of doing in terms of moving the ball. I think you saw him with two assists in this game. That was cool to see. They got him the ball in the post, let kind of guys rotate around him a little bit till someone got some space, kicked it back out. You saw some really smart things using Cavon Looney as just that veteran who knows how to play. Just the dude that gets it. You put him on the court and you’re like, “Yeah, this is good. This will work.” You saw that from Cavon Looney in this one here. So, I was happy to see how he was used too. I just like Mi a little bit more, I think, as a starter. So, overall, you know, they played pretty similarly in my opinion, but I like the shot blocking. I like the athleticism from Mei. I think that could be a real advantage for this team. Let’s quickly look at Jose Alvarado as well. I was curious what his role was going to be coming in. Jeremiah Fears and Micah Peavey were the first subs in. And Willie Green said like don’t read too much into this rotation. We’re not going to give the full rotation here yet. We’re still working through all of that, but Fears kind of maybe is your backup point guard. So, where does that leave a guy like Jose Alvarado? you know, if you have been listening in the offseason when I talked about, you know, what he’s going to need to do more of in this, you know, in this offense in this season, it’s you need to be more of a three-point shooter. It’s less the driving, attacking, you know, point guard, Jose, and more of a an offball spot-up shooter, Jose. Cool. He did it. That’s exactly how they used him. That’s what he did. He went he was four of five from the field but three of four from deep. 11 points, three rebounds, one assists, one steal here from him. That’s perfect. If he can make three threes per game or somewhere in that range, you’re going to feel really good about what his contributions to the team are going to be. They need him to do that. They’re going to need three-point shooting. You’re going to need to piece meal it together a little bit. You know, Jose giving you a couple of threes per game. That’s part of that process. That’s how you’re going to kind of cobble it all together. They needed that from him. They got that from him. So that was a very encouraging sign. I think you’ll see him continue to be used off ball, used as a defensive pest and just annoying guy out there on the court that we absolutely love. He’ll have times when he can be the point guard. You know, his offball activity is really important, too. You saw a nice drive down the baseline for the for a very difficult finish and score. So, there will be moments when that, but that was also created because he was in the short corner and they closed out on him hard because they were worried about his three-point shooting, which just made that drive to the basket a little bit easier. Three-point shooting for Jose is going to be a real big key, not just for him, but for the team this season. Finally, let’s look at Micah Peavey here. Second round pick for the Pelicans. He did really well in this one. Three of five from the field, one of one from deep, seven points on the night, three steals. He was good defensively. this is why they drafted him because he’s played in Georgetown um and from that area. But he he looks like he’s kind of defensively ready for the NBA and for a team that you know really slipped in defense last year and an area that they want to improve and you know that the best way for them to improve in that is just make baskets on the other end. But having a guy that can come in and give you spot minutes that’s going to be a good enough defender in Pavey, that’s great. He’s athletic. You saw a couple of really nice scores from him as well. So overall, a good showing for his NBA debut. You know, efficiency is going to be key for a guy like him. He definitely did that. So happy with what we saw. Happy overall, right? It’s a preseason game. Don’t read too much into it against a non-NBA team, but this was a lot of fun. You know, it the crowd was hyped. It was a sellout. Everything has just been going great with this trip to Australia. The hospitality and everything from what I hear is fantastic. Looking good for the Pelicans to start. We got another game Saturday 10 p.m. We will recap that one here on Locked on Pelicans. And that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. We appreciate y’all so much for listening. 1. Fears needs to be wearing a Squadron uniform for most of the year. I thought he left some easy assists on the floor, his shot selection was dubious, at best, and his on-ball defense was horrible. Let's not make the same mistake with him that we made with JAX!! Not many 18-year-old's are ready to play at the highest level of basketball on the planet.

I'm starting to believe that 3M3 might be the # 1 option we need badly. Time will tell.

Hawk had some moments which is promising.

Overall, against some inferior talent, the defense sucked!!!

  2. Why can't we have a winning season? We should have won more than 50 games 2 years ago. We didn't do that great in the overtime games, but this could be our year to make a statement.

  3. I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade, but I hope we all realize that after the first quarter, the Pelicans were outscored by Melbourne United….basically a minor league team by NBA standards. One preseason game – a season does not make, but the overblown hype being bandied about as a result of this game serves absolutely no useful purpose and does not bode well for the Pelicans as a TEAM in 2025-26!!!

DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!! It's not a skill…it's an attitude and we don't have it, yet.

  4. I seriously doubt Fears or Queen will make an impact this season. Maybe Queen, but he's already injured. Fears may play only out of necessity due to injuries, but if that's the case, this team is sunk already

  5. Imagine going for your 7th year into professional basketball, making 40M a year and you have one good PRE SEASON game and the response is: ''Zion silences Doubters''….

No wonder Pelicans have been a terrible franchise for like 25 years.

  6. I love Fears but he’s going to have to be red shirted this year in G league. Too many TOs and we are trying to go to playoffs this year. Jose should be back up PG

  7. Was at the game and it was awesome! Training session yesterday was also great, lots of Pelicans fans at that one. Fears is a worry for this year.

  8. Fears may not be ready to be our backup PG just yet , I feel he will spend most of the season in Birmingham . Jose Alvarado your job is safe bro . No shade but fears looks like he needs 2 more long years of developing for him to be our 2nd PG

  9. Once Zion went out of the game, it was the same issue they've had for years, the team just took jumpers. Nobody posting up in the paint. At one point Karlo was posted up deep in the paint asking for the ball and the Pelicans player stopped at the 3-point line, looked at Karlo and then looked and passed the ball to someone on the perimeter. If Green doesn't develop and get his bigs to be offensive facilitators in the paint when Zion is on the bench, this team will have another bad year. Queen and Matkovic are going to be the key to this season.

  10. He can't silence anyone the season hasn't started 😂😂😂😂😂 Have him stay healthy and entire season then maaaaybe he has an argument but rn you're reaching with this title😂😂😂😂
