It’s been over a week now, so there’s been sometime to digest the elimination. But I’m wondering how do we feel about the way Machado answered the final question following getting booted in Chicago? The midday 97.3 radio show took the side of the reporter, defending his question. I have to agree with them. I think there were better ways to answer a question like that. In my honest opinion, Machado has a great attitude when he’s playing well, but it’s terrible when he’s slumping. 2022, he was a true leader. 2023, his poutines was palpable. This one answer isn’t an isolated incident. Other fan bases, of course are having their way with it. And with the Yankees being eliminated, there’s comparison to Aaron Judge’s post-elimination game interview, and now Orion Kerkering of the Phillies (brutal). So, what do we think?

  1. He was upset, I would be too after playing 162 games and losing on a bum call. He should have been more professional so I am not excusing it but I understand it

  2. I’m going to preface this by saying I absolutely *hate* these interviews. Asking Kerkering how he feels after blowing the elim game, asking Alonso if he’s going to opt out after losing in Miami to end their season, etc.

That said, Manny’s response really bummed me out. He could have given credit to the team, playing hard etc. Could have said *something* positive while still being upset it was over. Not that he cares what others think, but it adds fuel to the fire for Machado haters. Just my two cents.

  3. He gets these interviews probably after every game. He is probably just sick of dumb questions. There is no logical answer other than “We lost”. He was probably pissed about that call, and kept smiling, but I bet he was churning inside.

  4. I don’t see why he couldn’t take the time to hype up the team in this moment. “The season didn’t go the way we wanted but the boys tried their hardest” etc. Literally takes no effort to be positive but this is what we are left with to summarize our leadership going into 2026. Maybe I’m too critical but it was really hard to defend Manny here. He’s already pretty hard to defend but it really made me think about whether he really should be the captain or not.

  5. Manny frequently gets annoyed with reporters especially if you see his interactions with Acee so this reaction isn’t a surprise. He was pissed off from losing and I’m sure upset at himself about not being able to perform. It’s is what it is. Don’t ask stupid questions and you won’t get stupid answers.

  6. I’m over Machado. Average WAR the last 3 seasons is 3.3. That is very (VERY) Meh for $35m per

He’s spent 7 years in SD, That seems like enough to win or move on.

    Bye.

  7. I seem to be in the minority here, but part of me liked it. It wasn’t too long ago that the Padres making it to the playoffs was a wild success. I remember when we lost the NLCS to the Phillies I was ecstatic that we even made it there. This team feels they can compete with the best and win a World Series. Personally, I’d be kinda upset if after this cubs series the team were hyped to make it to the wild card and settle at that. He’s right, to assess this season: we lost. We didn’t play well to end the season. And as a lifelong Padre’s fan I am happy to see a team that isn’t accepting anything but the best.

People saying he was pouting and disrespectful, he really just called out a dumb question (which it was). I’ve seen plenty of players across all sports leagues give similar answers, and plenty that were worse than this.

  8. His response just reinforces the douchey and immature image he’s supposedly outgrown.

  9. It’s classic Manny. He’s always been a peacetime captain but he doesn’t have the temperament to represent the team in bad times. Hopefully Merrill can step up and take over that role because after seven years, it’s pretty clear that Manny is who he is.

  10. I will be hugely unpopular and just say who cares. Whatever your job is, put yourself in a similar situation for your job. Sales, “hey, you just lost out on the deal that would have kept you Diamond club with only 30 days left. How do you feel right now?” Mechanic, “how do you feel knowing that you adding power steering fluid to the brake fluid reservoir and you just lost the Rental Car maintenance contract?” Student, “So you bombed the test and you are not eligible to graduate this year, how do you feel?” My answer to any of those is  “WTF are you even asking me this for? I failed, I choked, I made a mistake and honestly I am pretty F’n pissed off about it.” 30 days from now you might feel different. In the end it is entertaininment watching baseball, being a fan of a team. Who cares what Manny says or does not say. You watched the games, you have your own opinion. It’s Mannys job. If you dont like someones answer, move on. Their answer does not and should not change any part of your life, sports is ENTERTAININMENT. I’m gonna go play catch with my son, that is all I am concerned about, cuz someday he won’t want to play catch with me or be to busy.  That is something that matters.

  11. I think the reporter got exactly what they were hoping for here. I won’t ever stop loving manny, and he’s a human being a the end of the day. He works hard for the team grinding out literally almost every single game and that’s all you can ask for.

  12. People are going to hate Manny no matter what he says. If he gives a boring interview, like he does 99% of the time, nobody cares. People just wait for a moment to jump on him. He’s pissed. He didn’t play how he wanted to. The team didn’t play how they wanted to. He’s pissed and he’s allowed to be. People always complain about canned answers, but when a guy is raw with his emotions, they jump on him. This is why you get canned answers most of the time.

  13. *Good Lord, Manny Machado just walked right into that difficult question*

    what did you expect

    he’s Manny Fucking Machado

  14. Manny is the type of player I’d hate if he wasn’t a Padre. Immature and a guy with a superstar reputation but plays like ass when it matters most.

  15. I hate how reporters ask people how they’re feeling right after something bad happens. He was upset and disappointed and angry at that call. He took it out on the reporter, which sucks, but it was a dumb question so I get it. (I mean, “How do you feel about the season?” in and of itself is a shit question, and then to ask it right after we got kicked out of the post season is just stupid.)
