Dylan Harper Spurs Debut Was INSANE

I was very impressed with Dylan Harper in his debut. Amazing scripted play from the Spurs on this one, but the cell job from Harper made it possible. He’s got his hand up saying, “Come here. Come here. I got you for a screen.” Except he’s cutting. That’s great execution from a rookie. Unfortunately, he misses first three-pointer. However, it clearly did not affect his confidence. And to me, his calmness and pace really stood out. Spurs double screen up top. He hits the Jets and as soon as he sees number 28 in the paint, he’s making the correct pass to the corner. The only issue is the accuracy could have been better. I think there was a window for Johnson to still shoot it, but he elected to drive. Amazing ball movement from the Spurs and Harper played a huge part in that. Here, Luke Cornet sets a great screen by just getting in the way. Doesn’t even create contact, but it garners Harper initial separation. Now two are focused on Harper right away. As soon as Cornet clears Cody Williams, Harper lobs it up. I mean, he processes the floor so well for a 19-year-old. It’s crazy. Back to that double screen action and two in the corner. He picks Weby’s side. And this is the perk of playing with Wem as a driver. It’s just, you know, very useful because he likes to stay on the perimeter. He doesn’t clog the paint. He’s a floor spacer and you can see the paint is wide open and Harper’s eyes light up. He knows it’s go time. In-N-Out dribble, no help in the back. So, it’s an easy bucket. I feel like those backto-back plays are a perfect example of his pace. The first one, he’s really just taking his time. But the second one, he reaches another gear. He doesn’t have De’aran Foxt type speed, but when you mix it up like he just did, it can be just as effective. Great effort defensively on this play, taking away the back door, fighting over the screen, staying glued onto his guy, and forces a pass. The Spurs will live with Kyle Anderson taking threes all day long. Then in transition, look at how calm he is. He slows up to read the floor and sees Wem sprinting. And as a point guard, you must reward your teammates when they run the floor like that because it will make them want to do it again. Now he’s picking up full court, just being annoying, which naturally messes with their flow offensively. 14 seconds on the shot clock, there still has not been a pass. And you can see later on he’s being a brick wall, which leads to a turnover. I’m just so impressed with his pace and how he can run the pick and roll. So, he’s faking the pass, then one slow dribble into a burst of speed. Look at every defender in front of him. They expect him to keep driving because of that speed burst, because of his body language. But now, he just randomly stops on a dime and passes to the corner. Again, the pass is a bit offline, but that’s being nitpicky. Barnes does nothing with it. But again, these reads feel normal and easy for him. That’s not common for a player at his age. Now on this play, super slow pace from him. Wicked, perfectly executed pass to Kellen Johnson. I can’t knock the location on that one. Perfect accuracy. It’s right in the shooter’s pocket. Just another unfortunate miss. Now he’s in the corner space in the floor. He makes the defense pay. I would like to see him be more shot ready off the basketball. I think it could have been quicker. Another great rep defensively where he just keeps his man in front. Then off ball he takes away the cut but also switches on to the perimeter player to deflect the pass all in one sequence. Are you kidding me? That’s some great stuff. And I want to say I think tonight he showed that he can play off the ball which was a question mark. Wii doing his thing. He finds Harper. He attacks to close out right away. The defender stays in front. He says, “Okay, I’ll use that against you. create contact, push off a bit, but don’t make it obvious and step back. Now he has separation and he hits it. To me, that’s the toughest spot on the court to hit a mid-range jumper. Very impressive stuff. Also, every single superstar has that little pushoff in their bag. Tatum gets away with it. Sheay, James Harden. If you don’t make it obvious, you can really get away with it. And as you establish a resume, per se, the more the refs will allow it. That’s just how it goes in the NBA, to be honest with you. But yeah, that was a near-perfect debut from Dylan Harper. I love what I’m seeing from Luke Cornett. I think he’s going to be so useful for WBY and Dylan Harper and whoever. He’s just a winning role player. I recently made a video on him, so check it out if you enjoyed. Leave a like and subscribe. Have yourself a great day and peace
