Can Kevin O’Connell transform Carson Wentz with McCarthy out? | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

LIVE. THE BROWNS, YESTERDAY, OR YOU WOULD HAVE SWEPT ME, 60 AND OUR DISAGREEMENTS CRAZY DAY IN LONDON FOR THE VIKINGS CARSON WENTZ GETS INJURED LATE IN THE FIRST HALF. IT JUST HAD THAT VIBE THAT HE’S DONE TAKING HIM TO THE LOCKER HEAR THAT? HAD HIS PADS OFF CAME BACK. HE HAD HIS PADS ON MAX 1 SNAP AT THE END OF THE HALF JUST TO KNEEL DOWN BUT I’M THINKING IT’S GOING TO BE BROSAMER TIME IN THE SECOND THE VIKINGS. IT’S LIKE THEY KEPT HANGING AROUND. THAT’S RIGHT. HANGING AROUND AND THAT’S A PROBLEM. YOU LET A TEAM HANG AROUND. THE BROWNS HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO KNOCK THEM OUT. THE BROWNS COULD NEVER REALLY GET SEPARATION. AND THEN CARSON WENTZ PUTS TOGETHER, A GREAT DRIVE AT THE END. TRUST JORDAN. ADDISON, WHO’D BEEN BENCHED FOR THE FIRST QUARTER BECAUSE HE MISSED A WALK THROUGH AND HAD WORDS YOU CAN HAVE WORDS WITH YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE WORDS FOR OKAY FOR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. HE CAN’T, HE CAN’T LET PLAYERS PUSH YOU AROUND. WHEN YOU’RE A NICE GUY COACH, YOU CAN’T LET PLAYERS PUSH YOU AROUND BUT ADDISON RESPONDED WITH THE GAME-WINNING TOUCHDOWN VIKINGS GET THE WIN. 27 217 IN A GAME THAT ALSO INCLUDED A FIELD GOAL APPARENTLY HITTING A CAMERA CABLE THAT WOULD HAVE TIED THE GAME AT 17 WITH JUST UNDER 10 MINUTES LEFT AND NOBODY. NOBODY SAW THE VIKINGS NOBODY SAW IT. YEAH, IT WAS A 51 YARDER AND IT HIT AND IT GOES WIDE WIDE. WHY WHY? WHY WHY WHY WHY? WHY YOU ASK IT YOU AND UH W IT SEASONED AND AND THE LEAGUE’S POSITION IS, THEY DIDN’T HAVE A CLEAR VIEW OF IT HITTING. I MEAN, WE WE WE’VE SEEN IT. THE THE WIRE MOVES LIKE THIS AND THE BALL MOVES UNNATURAL. EXACTLY. RIGHT, RIGHT. IT IT, UH, I THINK YOU EXPLAINED IT, RIGHT? I MEAN THIS, THIS WAS WE KNOW, THE CLEVELAND DEFENSE IS PHENOMENAL, THEY MADE PLAYS AND KIND OF KEPT THIS VIKINGS OFFENSE IN CHECK FOR A LOT OF THE FOOTBALL GAME TO WHERE. YEAH, IT WASN’T A PRETTY ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL. BUT IT GAVE DILLON GABRIEL AND OFFENSE, A CHANCE TO KIND OF GET THEIR FEET GOING AND HE HAD A GOOD EARLY TOUCHDOWN DRIVE AND THEN I THINK THE THE THE BIG THING IS, WHEN THEY WERE UP, WHAT WAS IT? YOU KNOW, 1714 THEY GOT THE BALL, A NUMBER OF TIMES AFTER THAT IN GOOD FIELD POSITION WHERE YOU WERE, LIKE, OOH, IF THEY CAN GO SCORE HERE OR GET A FIELD GOAL, THEY’RE GOING TO MAKE THINGS. REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE FOR MINNESOTA. MINNESOTA IS GOING TO HAVE TO THROW AND IF YOU HAVE TO THROW EVERY PLAY AGAINST THIS BROWNS DEFENSE, YOU’RE IN TROUBLE. BUT THE FLORES DEFENSE CAME UP BIG A BUNCH OF TIMES FOR THE VIKINGS. THEY KEPT THE THE THE BROWNS, AWAY FROM SCORING AGAIN. AND YEAH, YOU KNOW, THAT LACK OF OFFENSE AND BEING ABLE TO PUT THE VIKINGS AWAY. LET COURT, CARSON WENTZ AND MCCONNELL AND OKANO AS A GAME GOES, THEY FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, HOW YOU’RE PLAYING THEM AND THEY THERE LATE IN THE FOURTH TALKED TO WHENCE AFTER THE GAME BY PHONE AND AND AND HE’S JUST AMAZED BY THE WAY. OKAY, CONELL COMES UP WITH THE PLAYS AND THEY HAD A PLAN FOR NOT LETTING MYLES. GARRETT DESTROY THE GAME. THEY WERE MISSING 3 OF THEIR STARTING OFFENSIVE LINE AND THEY HAD BLAKE BRANDELL WHO HAS NEVER PLAYED CENTER BEFORE IN THE NFL. YEAH. REPLACING THEIR 2 CENTERS. YEAH, MICHAEL JURGENS. THE BACKUP TO RYAN KELLY. YEAH. HAS A HAMSTRING INJURY KELLY IS ON IR BECAUSE HE’S HAD 2 CONCUSSIONS THIS YEAR I HE WAS A PATCHWORK OFFENSIVE LINE AND THEY HELD IT TOGETHER JUST LONG ENOUGH AND THEY GOT IT DONE AND THEY GET TO COME BACK FROM FROM LONDON. 1 AND 1 FOR THEIR EUROPEAN SWING. THAT WOULD 0 AND 2 AND AND WHENCE KNOWS THE INJURY THAT GOT HIM OR THEY HIT. THAT GOT HIM INJURED. HE HE TRYING TO DO TOO MUCH. THAT’S RIGHT. YOU KNOW, GOT A HELMET RIGHT TO HIS SHOULDER. HE HE TRIED THERE WAS NO WAY HE WAS GOING TO GET THE FIRST DOWN BUT AND HE TOLD ME, YOU KNOW, I LET THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT TAKE OVER AND I KNOW I NEED TO BE SMARTER. I SAID, WHAT DID OCONELL, UH, SAY ABOUT THAT? HE SAID, UH, WE HAVEN’T HAD THAT CONVERSATION YET. LONG PLANE RIDE HOME THAT THAT CONVERSATION IS COMING BECAUSE HE’S TRYING TO COACH THOSE THINGS OUT OF IT. THERE, THERE WAS A MOMENT WHEN THEY WERE DOWN NEAR THEIR OWN GOAL LINE AND WHENCE DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING AND HE, AND HE SCRAMBLED FOR A FEW YARDS TO SAY, HEY, BETTER THAN THROWING AT LEFT-HANDED, WHICH WE’VE SEEN BEFORE, HE’S GOT TO BE CAREFUL TO YOUR POINT, HE’S GOT TO BE CAREFUL WHEN WE DON’T KNOW HOW LONG IT’S GOING TO BE WITH JJ MCCARTHY. ALSO, WITHIN JJ MCCARTHY, WASN’T LIKE HE WAS LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD AND HE WAS PLAYING ANYWAYS. SO THAT THEY NEED CARSON WENTZ HERE TO STAY ALIVE. KEEP THIS OFFENSIVE FLOAT AND, YOU KNOW, SEE WHAT THEY DO WITH JJ INTERESTING CONVERSATION. BECAUSE I THINK CARSON WENTZ WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY WELL UNDER KEVIN OCONELL AND WHAT HE DOES. ANYBODY THAT GOES AND PLAYS FOR KEVIN OCONELL, COMES AWAY ALMOST THE SAME WAY. YOU HEAR SOMEBODY GO PLAY FOR CHANNAHON OR BEN JOHNSON OR THAT THEY COME AWAY ON. WHOA, HE TAUGHT ME THINGS THAT I THOUGHT I KNEW ALREADY, BUT HE TAUGHT ME NUANCE ABOUT IT AND IT IT YOU KNOW, OPENED UP MY BRAIN AND EXPLODED THAT WAY, LIKE LITTLE TRICKS ABOUT HOW TO RUN THE ROUTE I MEAN, IT’S, WE’VE HEARD CARSON WENTZ TALK ABOUT IT. WE’VE HEARD KIRK COUSINS. TALK ABOUT IT. I’VE HEARD SAM DARNOLD. TALK ABOUT IT. I’VE HEARD DANIEL JONES TALK ABOUT IT. THEY’VE ALL TALKED ABOUT THE GENIUS OF KEVIN OCONELL AND HIS ABILITY TO GET PEOPLE OPEN AND EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE NOT FUNCTIONING AT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL RIGHT NOW, THEY STILL GET IT DONE WHEN THEY NEED TO. FOR THE MOST PART, THEY GO BACK AND FIND THINGS AND IT’S PLAYS. HE’S BEEN BUT THEY’RE STILL DIFFERENT. YEAH, THEY’RE DIFFERENT AND

  1. So why do we have replay if they are not going to use it. Sure is funny how the clock in Dublin malfunctions at a critical time on what would have been game changing scoring drive against Steelers and now and a camera wire gets in the way of what would have been a game tying field goal, seems like the league is stacking the deck against the Vikings, fortuitously suspicious how these mishaps seem to happen to the Vikings and the NFL just takes an oh well attitude about. No wonder why people have been leaving NFL ticket and claiming that the games are being rigged.

  2. If Wentz keeps winning and improving then keep him in…JJ isn't ready anyways. Still hurts they decided to let Darnold walk. How did the booth officials, and the Vikings staff, miss the wire kick? If the Vikings lost this would have been a much bigger deal.

  3. I like Carson Wentz, however; as a Viking fan, I am not content with a good record anymore. I want a Super Bowl, and unless Carson Wentz can, not even win us a Super Bowl, but even just get us to the Super Bowl realistically this season then I don’t want him being our QB1. I want JJ in there so we can find out what our top 10 draft pick QB can do and if he is our franchise guy for the future. We don’t want to find out in year 3 or 4, we want to know now, and we will sacrifice this season, if needed, i.e.; maybe CW gets us a better record than JJ, who knows, I don’t even believe that, but even if he does, I don’t care, JJ needs the reps. I want a Super Bowl. If CW can take us to the promised land, keep him in as our starter this year, but if we don’t really believe that, put him as the back up as soon as JJ is healed up and let JJ show us what he has. I am OK if CW takes the Eagles game even if JJ is healthy since I think CW would like that chance of revenge and then JJ can take us to the Chargers game since that would only be a four day rest for the same QB, anyway.

  4. Most Vikings fans will probably want the team to go back to McCarthy when he's healthy no matter what, but Wentz has done a really good job despite only signing with the team after the preseason and playing behind an O-line down three starters and a backup center. He's done at least just as well as McCarthy did with a slightly healthier O-line. If not for the Vikings' issues with pre-snap penalties and pass protection, there's little doubt in my mind the offense would've hit on more big plays downfield and scored at least 30 points in either of the two games in Europe with Wentz behind center.

  5. I think McCarthy is the team's future QB will have a great career. However as right now I think Wentz earned the starting spot. Now it he plays bad then sure go back to JJ, but as of today Wentz should be QB 1

  6. you sit Wentz if you don't care about the outcome of this season. Love JJ, he needs to watch Wentz operate though. He is not NFL ready and throwing him into the fire during the toughest stretch of the schedule will end the season. KOC will make the right call, expect Wentz to take revenge on Philly.

  7. McCarthy is the guy throw him back in the there with the addition of Addison & they will flow & O’Connell has to realize Oliver is better than hock keep the young guys there

  8. I think every Vikings fan is fine with koc giving McCarthy 5 or so straight games to see what and how, then make a decision. I do not want them going back and forth between qb’s. KOC’s job is not in jeopardy, tell the locker room what you’re doing, then do it.
