I truly believe, this team is severely handicapped in an extremely determintal way, due to the continued presence of #8 on the top pair.

Here's another example where both his lack of positional awareness and lack of effort to recover or position, leads to an easy goal.

He's on the far side faceoff. I know typically we'd see Seider on the right side, but in this coverage scheme on the draw, Chiarot is the weak side D.

So the faceoff evolves, the play goes into the left corner, rassmuseen challenges the 50/50 puck and it ends up in Toronto's hands up high. (For those about to say He WaS SuPpoRting The PlaY, the play was already gone from the corner when he floated low)

They quickly play it net front and 2(?) Toronto players are wide open infront of the net. Where is the weak side D? He's floating into the left corner, where the play had left seconds later. Who's covering the guys Infront of the net ? Fucking nobody.

This guy constantly is losing body position on defense and is hardly ever between the other team and the net, because half the time he's coasting around up high in the zone, or in the corners when he shouldn't be.

Literally, anybody with defensive awesomeness on line #1 and we are so much better.

Should Seider have also been lower? Yes, but at least, he was attempting to block the play from going low and at least he was covering his general side of the ice correctly.

I refuse to quit pointing these out – Chiarot Defensive awareness leads to a goal

  1. He’s just not a good
Player and he’s gonna kill sieder game like he has in the past. It’s time to go out and trade for a lefit partner for MO

  2. You’re pointing out Chiarot on a play where Seider had time and space and chose to dump it to an area where we had no one without even looking. There’s plenty to blame chiarot for but this one ain’t on him.

  3. Watch the replay of Domi’s tying goal in the 3rd. Chiarot runs Seider right out of the play.

  4. This seems like a poor example of “defensive awareness”.

There were two passes the leaf player on the boards could have made: to the point or below the goal line. Chiarot gambled on the pass going below the goal line and moved to cut it off, he just gambled wrong. He tried to make an aggressive play and got burned, this isn’t a lack of awareness.

I’m not trying to defend Chiarot, I just think you missed the mark with your example here.

  5. You don’t need to convince us he isn’t very good, try the front office who does nothing too replace him year after year.

  6. While I do think Chairot can be a bit over-hated at points, it’s really hard to justify him being a top pair D when you have three years of evidence that Mo Seider’s analytics take a massive hit when he’s with Chiarot. It’s blows my mind that we’re in the final year of his contract now and we’ve been unable and seemingly unwilling to find Seider a better partner.

  7. I’ve never played on a team or been coached on defensive assignments like this, but Seider is RD right? So he should’ve been right side and Chiarot is left side here?

  8. He tried to jump the cycle back down into the corner, but he was wrong. Honestly would be awesome to get our hands on another top 4 guy to pair with Mo and push Chiarot down to the 3rd pair with Aljo.

  9. Yes Chia-rot hasn’t been good, but neither has Mo. MO’s play is inconsistent and is often out of place.

  10. Chiarot is a hangover from the ‘get better now’ part of this rebuild. He is one of the vets we overpaid to simply ice a better team. And, ice a better team we did, Chiarot, through his physical presence and veteran leadership has been a great contributor to this team. There is a reason Chiarot is on the top line, gets top minutes, and is a leader on this team. Now, it certainly isn’t because he’s good at hockey, but that is OK right now.

Now, regarding being overpaid, that is just what you need to do to sign veteran players when you are a basement dwelling team. The fact of the matter is this team was completely desperate for veteran defenseman when Chiarot was signed. And if you’ll recall, at the time of signing, the market for veteran defenseman was extremely shallow. Yzerman was in a position where he was needing to sign whoever was available, and he was going to over pay and over term that contract no matter what. *Any* veteran defenseman signed when he was signed would have a similar looking contract.

Now, silver linings here, Mo has developed fantastically while paired with Chiarot. Some of that is due to Chiarot’s leadership, it has to be.

Chiarot is a good veteran leader. He is overpaid because of course he is, he needed to be. The only reason to come to DET when he signed was for the money. Both parties just took what was available, and it has worked out pretty damn well. His contract has been a success in my opinion.

Now, the reality is that he *is* a hangover from the overpay to get better now era of this rebuild. He’s a third line defenseman playing top pair minutes. He’s over played, over deployed, outmatched, and overpaid. BUT, he’s got one year left. It’s perfect.

All that said, who do we have in the organization now who should take Chariots spot? Ed? AlJo? Ok so who do we move up from GR? We don’t really have another options. Anyone we move up creates a massive hole on the lower pairs. And we clearly don’t have a LHD that is ready in the minors. And moving one up, would have them paired with ASP or Hamaonic, which would be bad to say the least.

Chiarot is where he is because we need him to be there and it’s going to be this way until his contract expires and we look to FA to sign a bona fide top pair D man for Mo or either move Ed up and pair them with ASP.

Yeah… Chiarot is hangover from a different time. And that is fine. He’s been great for us.

  11. This clip doesn’t show what happened well enough. We know Seider threw it into a bad spot and you also say his position was questionable. Feels like it was just a breakdown from everyone.

  12. Worst defensive player to play and the reason I gave up on watching my fav sports team. I have zero confidence it’s his last year. I have a feeling he has some sort of blackmail like leverage on the ownership

  13. Honestly this was mostly on Seider. He went into the corner to play the puck, it hopped over his stick, instead of keeping it on that side and making a play up the strong side boards where we have 4-5 guys already, he gets lazy and chips it behind net to 2 Leafs. Then we’re over-collapsing trying to cover for the lazy unforced turnover and we get scored on.

Even after they get it out of the corner, Chiarot was first back, and Seider left his coverage to try to make a block, leaving Chiarot to try to scramble back to get the back door. They had a couple gaffe’s yesterday, on the Domi goal as well, but this goal in particular is 90% on Seider, granted Chairot didn’t cover the spots Seider left as effectively as he could have.

  14. Every year we have a whipping boy.

    DDK.

    Blash.

    Petry

    Newsy

    Tarasenko.

I guess it’s Chiarots turn now.

    Who’s next??

    Copp?

    Compher?

    Todd?

At what point do we enjoy the fact the Wings played better than I’ve seen them do in a long time?
We had 3 decent lines performing and I really enjoyed watching them.
Yet somehow we are finding negatives in that.

  15. A broken play off of a faceoff, a lost puck scramble, and a deflection is going to make pretty much any NHL defensemen look bad.
