Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe I’m getting old. Wings in red at home still looks weird. And it has been like this for years.

Unrelated picture of inside of the Joe.

  1. I had heard that teams started wearing their primary colors to make the game more visually interesting and to boost jersey sales.

Maybe they could wear it sometimes but it makes more sense to me to reserve the whites for away games.

  2. While I feel equally nostalgic to the classic home threads in white and red, feels like the league should offer the same to all teams.

And at this point, people are broadly used to the modern color scheme.

  3. I don’t hate it. And I am getting old too lol. I miss the Joe. I don’t hate LCA but feel the seats are so tight. I went last night and sat next to a mother/daughter from Toronto. Super nice people but they agreed the seats were super tight.

  4. I will always think of white as home jersey and red as away. I’d like it if they went back to that but it seems like that won’t happen.

  5. Didn’t they wear darks at home during the O6 era? If so then why should only O6 wear home whites if it’s not even historically correct?

  6. THANK YOU.

I’ve felt this way for long now. In my mind it’s right to wear white

    ETA down voters love Columbus

  7. It’s nostalgia, but something I’d love to see teams bring back every once in a while. They do alternate jerseys all the time, so why not?

That being said, I remember when they switched to colors for home games and it did make a huge difference. Every single fanbase bringing white jerseys to games gave no variety.

  8. I still like the idea of doing a little mini tournament in season with the original six teams and have some kind of trophy for the winner. Maybe kind of like the NBA does now, but with only the original six teams participating. The league should really do stuff like that to celebrate its history and recognize those teams are special.

  9. The NHL has gone back and forth on home teams wearing white vs their color jerseys. At this point there is really no “historically accurate” option, it comes down to preference. I happen to prefer white at home, but that’s because it is what we wore at home when I was growing up.

For the record – this really didn’t become an issue for the league until the introduction of black and white television. I believe that’s when the NHL first officially mandated which jerseys teams had to wear at home. Prior to that it was more tradition than an actual rule.

  10. Months before the last game, I saw Garth Brooks at the Joe… after the concert I ran down the stairs and hopped the boards. I needed that. I miss the Joe.

  11. I just like the white jersey with red arms/wings more than the all red. But I think that as long as the teams have obviously different colors, that they should get to wear what they want. The home team should get 1st choice when it’s two teams with similar colors.

  12. I prefer the red jersey at home. The white is boring. And as far as I know, they only wore white at home in the 70s and 80s.

    Edit

Apparently the NHL rules stipulated that teams wear white at home from 1970 through 2003. Before and after that, they wore their colored uniforms at home and white on the road.

  13. I think the AHL wears white at home for half rhe season and dark the other half. Or at least they used to from what I’ve heard… true?

  14. Then they would almost exclusively wear white and only wear red on the road against an Original 6 opponent. No thanks.

  15. Everyone should. Every time you go to a game it’s Red vs white. it was nice seeing all the other teams colors.

  16. I (46M) have some how become the guy on my hockey team that decides what jersey to wear. I always pick white (gray actually) for home and dark for away. It’s how it was when I was growing up. The young guys on my team can’t quite wrap their brains around it!

  17. I’ve never understood this. Their primary color is red. They’re the Red Wings. Every team has a white jersey, it’s not as special.

  18. Everything that has been said I agree with. The darks were always the “home” sweater. Personally, I love watching the Wings in their Reds. It’s such a sexy sweater.

BUT!! I do miss seeing the visiting teams wearing their darks when playing the Wings.

It would be cool if they alternated years. Even years you wear whites at home. Odd years you wear the darks. That would be fun and create a whole new level of marketing.

  19. I think it’s pretty simple, if a team wants to wear white at home, then let them white at home and if they don’t want to then they don’t have to. Away team gets second choice. I understand why people would care but I personally wouldn’t care if teams would do dark jerseys vs dark jerseys (such as 2014 winter classic jersey matchup). As long as it’s not red vs red etc.

  20. I grew up with home whites so I prefer home whites. Of course I also grew up without Priority patches.
