It is fair to say David Jones Garcia would not be a member of the Spurs were it not for his father.
David Apolinar Jones died of heart failure in February 2023 in his native Dominican Republic.
Before he did, Jones’ son made him a deathbed vow.
“I promised my dad I was going to play at least one game in the NBA,” Jones Garcia said. “I’m trying to keep that promise.”
That was the primary reason Jones Garcia fended off serious interest from teams in Europe this summer in order to sign a two-way contract with the Spurs.
It left the 23-year-old guard one step closer to keeping his word.
For now, Jones Garcia is doing everything he can to deliver on a promise to his dad.
“The Spurs is a great organization,” he said. “I’m blessed to be part of it.”

How can you not root for this guy?
C’mon Spurs/Mitch.

If it happens at Frost, fans need to give him a standing ovation when he checks in.
I know we have a better, deeper roster this year. But if David Duke and Harrison Ingram could get into 7 and 5 games respectively last year, I gotta believe Jones-Garcia will get a few minutes with the A Squad if he sticks it out all season
Honestly knowing how the Spurs work, they’ll force a situation where hes called up just to play a little.
It’ll happen, at the very least in garbage time, but I’m sure he’ll at least get a few games with some prolonged minutes.
He’ll get a chance, if not with us then somebody else. I think Gary Neal opened up the door for him here, although it’s hard to say if he’s NBA ready, summer league & preseason doesn’t mean all that much.
He really went beast mode against the Jazz. I’m sure he got a boost in his chances off that late game play. Preseason or not.
This guy is a lock for 3rd string PG/SG.
I don’t give a damn, get this guy at least 15 mpg.
This man is clutch. He don’t need charity minutes, DJG is the truth and he’s been proving it since summer league. He’s going to earn his way on the floor one way or another because he’s just a dawg.
Another Spur who made a deathbed promise to a parent and he’s also from the Caribbean? How fitting.
I’d be surprised if he didn’t get at least some minutes this season.
Honestly what does Jordan McLaughlin offer over DJG? Like obviously if they’re playing we are either blowing the team out or being blown out ourselves if Fox, Castle, Harper AND Vassell aren’t available to run PG. so why not give that last spot to DJG? Waters III too.
