Should the Minnesota Vikings Have Re-Signed QB Sam Darnold?

[Music] What’s going on? Jerome’s slinging Sammy Darnold aka Seattle’s quarterback or God Emperor quarterback of the United States. Got it. He’s been balling out this season. Uh just today got got a nice little win on the road against the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars. Go from West to East. Always tough, but Darnold’s been looking really damn good. you know, signing his big-time contract w with Seattle and he’s settling in and the Vikings will see him in Seattle because we play in Seattle every single season in a couple of weeks down the road. But of course, you know, Vikings on the by-week and seeing Darnold ball out, seeing Daniel Jones looking really damn good. Oh, no. Yeah, Daniel Jones was never going to resign here. No, no matter what what the price was because he did not see a path to starting like he did in Indianapolis beating out uh Richardson who how do you break your orbital bone with one of those stretch bands pregame? Yeah. Yeah. Uh but of course it’s always easy to be Monday morning quarterback and you see this happen with the draft a lot. It’s like well we drafted this player in the fifth round when we could have gotten someone else who was way better. That’s Yeah, you could do literally do that with every single draft pick. you’re going to drive yourself nuts. But with this, it really did come down to a decision this off seasonason where slinging Sammy Darnold, who had himself a phenomenal season last year, 14 and three, would it be uh for the Vikings or first round pick number 10 overall, highest drafted quarterback in team history in 2024, Jay J. McCarthy. And Darnold, you respect had himself some Redhead Redemption number one. We’re in the midst of Redhead Redemption number two with Carson Wentz. and Darnold, we had said after this win against Green Bay, we we were on wax. We got Nemo wax. We on record saying that, hey, you hope that JJ McCarthy is this good, right? And we saw the high highs of uh of Sam Darnold where he was integrating into the offense. Kevin McConnell worked his uh center for quarterbacks want to throw, learn how to throw good and all that stuff. And it just seems like this was we’re a season of destiny. But then the Lions game and then the Rams game. These two games cost Sam Darnold a spot here with the Vikings. I I they truly did because if Darnold had finish out the regular season, you know, say the Vikings win the division, they go 50-2, they get the one seed and they make some noise in the playoffs, maybe even rip off a Super Bowl, like you’re keeping Sam Darnold, you know, no matter what JJ McCarthy is, no matter no matter what the cap situation, like you’re keeping Sam Darnold, you’re figuring out a way how to do it. But the Lions game, said this a bunch, Lions game bugs me way more than the Rams game cuz the Lions defense was banged up. And all of a sudden he’s like Chuck Knoblock out there, especially in the red zone. Just like 18 of 41 for a buck 66. Just not great. Uh the Rams game just no protection. The Rams had a great game plan and got sacked nine times and just no bueno. No no no Guda. And that’s why I would say too, well, we should have never gotten rid of Darnold. How do you think he would have fared behind this offensive line the first four weeks of the season and week five against Cleveland’s eye, but first four weeks when the Vikings gave up 18 sacks, how do you think Darnold would have performed? We’ve seen it. We’ve literally seen it, right? And Darnold, I I don’t want this to come off as backhanded compliment, but Darnold, as he showed last year, is a very good regular season quarterback, right? can put up numbers, made the Pro Bowl last year, you know, big- time respect, you know, and carrying on and just getting after that talent and potential that made him the number three overall pick. But also, it’s like if you’re a Jets fan, you you had Darnold, you know, number three overall pick in 2018. It’s like you had him and then you traded him to the Panthers. But are Jets fans still kicking themselves like, “Oh, we should have never given up on Sam Darnold.” Okay. I I feel like if the Vikings Well, first off, the Vikings are not going to give up on JJ McCarthy, but it seems like a lot of the fan base is like, “Ah, he’s a bust. He’s terrible.” If you can judge homeboy off of two games, I mean, why why are you not an NFL GM? Why are you not NFL scout? Who knew? Yeah. Uh but if you’re so certain that Jay McCarthy is a bust, trade him. Go ahead. Trade him and then hope and pray that he doesn’t catch on somewhere else, which he will, but he’s got the talent. He’s got the drive. He’s got everything and then becomes one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League. And then that same person will be like, “I told you they should never trade McCarthy.” So, so it’s so easy to always be right when your opinions aren’t uh on record. Uh but Darnold is balling out for Seattle. Oh, Clint Kubak, come on, man. That’s looking really damn good. Uh as well, I mean, came up short in that shootout against the Bucks. I But what can you do? I mean, that was still hell of a game between Carolina Panthers quarterback alums. All right, but uh hooker by crook, you know, the Vikings, they they push all their chips in with JJ McCarthy, uh Kevin McConnell extension, Quy extension, and there there’s no accident that their extensions run in correlation with JJ McCarthy’s uh fifth year option on his rookie deal. They’re all in this together. And that that’s why the whole controversy between JJ McCarthy and Carson Wentz is stupid. No, it’s it’s going to be JJ McCarthy once he’s 100% good to go and go from there. And with Darnold, obviously Darnold was going to play for free here. Uh, you know, three year 10.5 million bucks, averaging 335 a year. That seems like a steal. And also, you know, the breakdown of the contract essentially was a one-year deal. I mean, this was the upgraded Matt Flynn contract. So, if Darnold wasn’t it, they could have parted ways after a year, but Darnold does look like he’s it. And if the Vikings would have signed Arnold to comparable money, cuz remember if the Vikings really wanted to keep him, they could have because they still had the franchise tag, but or they could have given him similar money to this, but then you know, even though the Vikings had the cap space, it’s all right. So, do you not sign Will Fry? Do you not resign Byron Murphy? Do you not sign Javon Hargrave or resign Josh Matelis or Josh Oliver or sign Isaiah Rogers in free agency? Don’t know. But uh if the again if if the season ended right here or if Darnold finished out the year riding this high, he’s quarterback here and JJ McCarthy is your secondyear backup on the bench. It’s what he is. But you know, JJ McCarthy, like I said, it’s way too early to judge him. Also, look at what Drake May did today. Aren’t the Patriots glad that they just played him last year where it was certainly up and down at times, but Drake May’s looking like a ba baller? Well, the Vikings are a trade over for Drake May. Yeah. The Patriots weren’t trading out. Patriots weren’t trading out. No. Uh, but remember JJ McCarthy’s had two games and one of the games was this. So, I feel like everything is going to be all right. Uh, but of course, it’s always easy to be the Monday morning quarterback and have those barroom conversations. Oh, they should have kept Darnold. Oh, they should have kept Daniel Jones. Nah, nah, nah. The Vikings made the right decision. And even if it wasn’t the right decision short term, it’s going to be the right decision long term because uh again Quy and Kevin McConnell, they’re all in with JJ McCarthy. And remember all the reasons that you would want Darnold here. Oh, because of Kevin McConnell. Oh, because the weapons. Oh, because the offensive line healthy. Those all apply to JJ McCarthy as well. But all right. Anyways, your thoughts are thoughts. Should the Vikings have kept Sam slinging Sammy Darnold aka Seattle’s quarterback? Nah. N let us know your thoughts. Our thoughts comment section. You guys are the best you know to do. Skull production value.

  1. People keep saying all this nonsense, “he didn’t step up when we needed him in big games” psh look at Goff dude was so ass with the lions for so many years before he actually got better. Shit takes time. And with McCarthy ain’t looking to good but give it time for him. We should’ve keep Darnold. All these we wouldn’t been able to sign all these players. Who cares these new players we signed haven’t been doing shit!

  2. Anyone would be better than JJ. Wentz is way better than JJ. Anyone that can actually stay healthy is better than JJ. I’ve never seen so many excuses made for a QB in my life, he may be good eventually but he stinks now.

  3. No. At the time, Darnold was a 7-yr veteran and absolute wilted in the games against Detroit (to decide the division) and against the Rams in the playoffs.

  4. The whole idea was to strengthen the o-line & add some on D the $ was needed for that. The issue is, it isn't working out as well as hoped so far. It's harder to develop a rookie without solid protection and every rookie has a learning curve. Love looked terrible the 1st half of his 1st season. I still feel JJ may have a higher ceiling than Darnold but honestly it's too early to tell.

  5. Can’t wait for JJ to become the QB we drafted him to be so we can move past this nails on chalkboard petty negativity from fans who have internalized losing into their personality

  6. KOC has success with QB’s with a proven track record of being the REASON their team wins (whether college or pro). JJ has NEVER been the REASON his team wins. JJ’s ceiling was a game manager even at the college level where 5 defensive players can miss tackles on any given play. JJ road coattails, and that was, and IS, the concern! And maybe being content with mediocrity (or less than mediocrity) is the reason that the most highly scrutinized teams usually make the biggest moves.

Here’s the painfully obvious truth… this year is a throwaway to let JJ get experience and see what we have in him. Ideally we don’t waste next year on the same experiment.

  7. Call me crazy, but I 100% think it’s possible Darnold intentionally threw that game against Detroit. Idk what goes on behind the scenes with Vegas, but looking back at the missed throws and bad balls on important downs it makes me wonder. Compare that to the first game against Detroit and with the starters on defense out in the second matchup. To me, it’s fishy. I understand it’s a serious accusation, but I can’t help that my mind goes there.

  8. DURABILITY. Our o-line has looked terrible for years, but other qbs have fought and were not as frail as JJ. I think he has all the talent and more, but I worry he will suffer injury after injury. He played two regular season games and hurt 50% of the time. I really hope he will iron out the health issues but MY GOODNESS can we just catch a break!!! SKOL as always JEROMES!

  9. Let JJM fly baby! I want to know what we have at QB. Darnold was awesome during his time here, but this was the plan all along and I'm ok with it. If KOC thinks JJM is the next great QB I believe him. He hasn't been wrong yet. Unfortunately, if KOC is wrong and JJM is not and we had both Darnold and Jones in the building, I would ask are we any better than the Carolina Panthers?
