Almost the San Jose (Tiger) Sharks?

I’ve been watching you on YouTube on postgame, pregame, all that good stuff. Thank you. Just a quick question. I’m a big graphic design uh hockey jersey nerd. Just a quick question about if you’ve ever seen any prototype Shark jersey or any Sharks jersey that has been tested but has never seen the light of day but you’ve been able to see like you know the video tests, the photo tests, any Shark jersey that we have not seen. Have you seen any prototypes? Thanks. Bye. Nick, are you wondering if I’ve had inside Access for all these years? Are you wondering if I haven’t shared everything? If I’ve kept some of that in the circle of trust, absolutely I have. And what I’m about to share with you here was something that was already pre-released by the original designer. I’m going to show you something not from recent years, but but from the origins of the San Jose Sharks. But what if I told you back in 1991 they were considering a name of the San Jose Tiger Sharks? Whoa. neon green instead of teal. Could you imagine? Now, this comes from Terry Smith, who gave a bunch of different mock-ups of ideas and concepts of the Sharks design. Terry Smith, by the way, a Bay Area product who designed the original Sharks logo as well as their current remix, which happened in the late 2000s. They they didn’t change a lot. They didn’t overhaul the logo entirely. It’s still the triangle, you know, the main crest with the shark coming down top left to bottom right biting the stick in half. They modernized the logo and Terry Smith did that logo, too. Terry Smith has done so much work, great work over the decades. More on him in just a second, but I want to let this sink in for a second. And it’s crazy how much time and effort goes into picking out a logo and a color and a theme and branding. But could you imagine like the alternate reality we’d be living in today if it was the San Jose Tiger Sharks and and neon green was their color? maybe the Dallas Stars wouldn’t exist like they do. And what do you think of those jerseys? Again, very much a raw concept. Uh probably done back then with uh more manual designs than than most of it being done on computer. But that is interesting, right? So, I’m I’m leaving this up on the screen. Yes, I’ve seen a bunch of different concepts. I’ve seen so many things that the the sharks considered and never used. And again, I I know it says confidential on the screen. Terry released these as part of a project we were doing a handful of years ago over on NBC Sports. And by the way, you can check out the interviews I’ve done with Terry. I’ll link to them somewhere here on the screen. I’ll try and remember to do that after making this video. I’ve got those interviews on my YouTube channel. He is a very interesting person. But think about all the work of of the logo and what if it turned out different. It is hard to imagine, but this could have been our reality. And there’s a lot of other things I cannot and will not share with you, but I wanted to showcase that. Terry Smith Creations is the name of his um of his company, and he is Terry Smith. He is the man. There’s me after chatting with him in the studio a handful of years ago. I’m holding up, by the way, the very same starter jacket that I wore in middle school, like when the Sharks came out in 1991. that starter jacket that so many people had and the logo on the back because I’m standing next to the guy who designed it. Terry did so much great work. He’s got a lot of concepts again that never saw the light of day that are out there that he saved. And you know what I’m realizing this would be a very good segment for me to do over on the Sharks channel. But again, Terry, great guy, product of the Bay Area, easygoing, would probably be a thrill to work with in the spheres of sports and design and entertainment. He’s done it all. You’ve seen his work in other places. He did the original Sharks logo in the current main Sharks logo and his his resume is super impressive. I didn’t want to list everything he’s done here up on the screen, but in television, in movies, in art and design and team logos. Uh, very accomplished, uh, very humble guy, too. So, you’re not going to see him a lot in all these different places, but you should know that he’s out there. Anyway, just wanted to share the San Jose Tiger Sharks.
