Craig Berube | Post Game vs Detroit Red Wings | October 13, 2025

Craig, what can your team take away from the effort tonight? Yeah, I mean it was a good solid 60 minutes in my opinion. Thought we controlled the play. Plenty of opportunities to score. Didn’t go in enough. I mean, that’s the bottom line. And um you know, probably shouldn’t have gave up the two-on-one goal. What does it say about Cow that came on the line, put him out six on five at the end there? Well, I had I thought he had a great game. I made a lot of good plays with the puck. Um, and he made a good one on six on five, too. So, that’s why he was out there. What did you like about how he complimented Austin and Matthew? Yeah, I just thought 5 foot plays all over the ice, you know, he made a lot of them to him. Um, he was very good on a for check. Um he um he’s got a great hockey IQ from the player that you saw last year to 12 totally different player way more confident and direct skating way better. You know, you were looking for more puck touches on that second line there. What did you think of them tonight? Well, they they I thought they did they were better for me. Um you know, they’re in the offensive zone a lot. They started in the offensive zone a lot. Um we still need more out of them. You know that they got to put they got to score at some point. Um I still think they’re they can be better and um they will be better. Along those lines, Austin and Willie uh empty neck wins, but nothing really tangible against a goalie. Where’s your thoughts about them right now? Well, Austin’s getting a lot of opportunities. He’s shooting the puck a ton. Uh Willie needs more shots. Um you know, he’s doesn’t have enough shots. I think in Detroit didn’t have any. Had one or two tonight. Um we need to get him more. He needs to attack more. He needs to shoot more. He’s got to get on the inside more. Like things like that. Um so yes, we do need more of him. Cali, three goals in three games. What’s been your takeaway from the start to the season? Just working to me. He goes out every shift and it’s just work and that’s his game and he’s in the right spot and capitalizing on some goals which is great and it’s great to get that uh secondary scoring from guys. Um so he’s played really well. You said in the past he’s always at his best to move his feet. Well, there is shifts and times where he is skating. Um but I just feel like he’s it’s not enough. So we need more out of him. Do you think that’s just early season rust or figuring out who line mates? What? What? Well, I think it’s a little bit new linemates too, but um you know, um I don’t know exactly what it is to be honest with you. Um but you know, I’ll have a conversation with him and see where he’s at and what’s going on. The power play. What have you seen with the power play? I like I said that what the power play in Detroit um they were shooting and attacking. And I thought they did the same tonight, you know. Um, like I said, it’s that’s that’s one area of it that they’re doing a good job, but you know, the power play needs to put it in the net. The last two games an indication this division is going to be tighter this year. Very tight. Um, you know, Detroit’s a much improved team. We talked about Ottawa before, Montreal. Um, but you know, it’s going to be a tough division for sure.

  1. Pre-season doesn't matter. Regular season doesn't matter. Lessons learned don't matter. Wake me when the Leafs make it out of the second round of playoffs.

  2. Berube’s style of hockey simply doesn’t suit the Leafs. The team looks lost out there — running north-south like headless chickens, with no creativity, no spark, and no enthusiasm. Players like Nylander and Matthews were not born to play this rigid, grind-it-out system; it completely suppresses their natural talent and flair. If this continues, making the playoffs will be a real challenge. Hiring Berube just because he has a Stanley Cup on his résumé looks like a major mistake — the wrong coach for the wrong team.

  3. Defenceman need to be able to pass and skate the puck out of our zone. Maybe big but lack puck skills. Might have high priced forwards but if they don't have the puck. They can't do much! Terrible hire for a coach who's system doesn't create offence. Since he was hired not because they couldn't defend but cause they couldn't score. How's that reasoning working out?

  4. I’ve said it so many times before and it’s panning out: they should have traded Nylander and negotiated to keep Marner. Willie has great skills but he’s lazy and WILL NOT battle in corners. Too late to reverse it now, and it’s going to cost the team dearly.
