They hang on in Winnipeg by a final score of five to four. Man, I don’t even really know how to feel about this one, but a win is a win, especially against a division opponent. We’re going to talk about that. Glenn Goldson’s uh performance or I guess his execution with this hockey team. I think his influence certainly showed. So, we’ll touch on some of that. And of course, um just able to save off uh almost a monumental collapse um that they were able to to get it done. And um that’s where we’re going to kind of kick things off on today’s show. And and I don’t want this point uh to get lost um or don’t allow this to get lost in the final 10 minutes of of the hockey game because I think this is is my main takeaway from tonight. The Dallas Stars went on the road in a building where the Jets lost seven games during reg in regulation last year and like single-handedly bullied the Jets for 50 minutes and they were up five to one at at one point. And good teams do not have third periods. Great teams do not have third periods like the Stars did, especially the final 10 minutes. But to do what they did on the road and I I know it’s opening night, but they were pretty crisp. They were clean for the most part and again just bullied the Jets for 50 minutes, especially the opening moments of the third period and took him by the throat and went up. Unfortunately, it went off the rails, uh, giving up a couple of short-handed goals, but what we saw in that first 50 minutes is a great blueprint that I think the Stars can repeat night in and night out. Uh hopefully the collapse is just we can chalk it up to opening night a bit sloppy and it it’s hard to to just stay on the throat so to speak of teams when you’re up five to one you get a bit laxidasical and credit to Winnipeg they they stayed in the game. Uh they’re going to show some pride especially on home ice. They didn’t want to just get ran out of the building. Um, and they made things interesting, but the Stars buckled down and when it mattered most, they got a huge kill after the Thomas Harley delay of game penalty. It was unraveling and they buckled down. Aer got a couple of big stops and they were able to to finish the the job. And again, that’s two points on the road against a very good team. And I just loved what we saw out of Dallas in the first 50 minutes. uh the puck possession game. For the most part, the defensive zone structure was really good outside of just leaving Kyle Connor wide open in the first period. What we wanted to see from Dallas, we got the majority of it. Uh you saw Rantin and just how incredible he is. This show is going to turn into to locked on Rantin. Uh once again, an incredible night. Three points, scores the first goal. Uh Jason Robertson, man, he moved better tonight than I think he moved at any point last season. He was playing rough and tough and for the most part the stars were my goodness, they were just heavy. They played a a physical brand. Golitzson talked about that all off season and that is a huge positive right off the bat to see what we saw and I think you saw that hand-tohand combat phrase Goldson used quite a bit like they just went after Winnipeg and they did not shy away. I mean Justin Ritzovian’s going after Mark Shifley and Bishell is just hitting everything in sight. He is just tossing Domestic away. Man, I I’m thinking about Bishel. God, I would hate to play that guy. He is just a bruiser. And Rantin was all up inside of the heads of the Jets in the first two periods. Oh my goodness. He has a couple lakeouses in Manitoba. He uh is living rentree. He was just playing such a dog dog hard game. Um and he uh he was he was remarkable. Of course, I think Hints had a really strong I mean, we saw a lot of great things in those 50 minutes and I don’t want that to to get lost because of the really bitter bitter ending to this, but at the same time, they still buckled down. I mean, they got two points um on the road. I mean, Rantin gets three points. Lungquist with a couple of points. He was excellent in the game. Um some of the stuff we we talked about, some of my bold predictions, I feel like uh came came true a bit. Sam Steel looked really comfortable. Um, is Sam Steel a topline winger? No. But with the injuries the Stars have in a pinch, he’s really good. He’s a good option. And Rantin starts the play that he eventually scores on on that game’s first goal by winning a puck battle down beneath the the end line. Steel, great work. Spins away from Shifley. He’s able to work the pass across to Hint. They get it on net. Rebound. Slam dunk for Rantin. Steel looked really good. They moved the lines around. Golitin is going to shuffle them. We’re just going to have to uh sort of roll with the punches on on the line combinations. When the penalties started to fly in the second period, we saw a lot of different bodies together. Robertson was with Johnston and Duchain at points. He was uh also with Johnston and Bourke. We saw a lot of different combinations which we we’ll get to. um as the the show goes uh along. But for for the most part, again to reiterate it, that’s 50 minutes of road hockey that Goldson has been preaching for months and the Stars executed it for 50 minutes on the road uh in a tough building. Um, and yes, I may not be as high on on Winnipeg as some other uh some others, but Hellabuk looked really solid and looked like a Vzna winning goalender in the second period uh when the Stars were uh really tilting the ice. They outshot Winnipeg 17 to7 in the second period. Like just all over Winnipeg and Hellbuck was keeping them in the contest. Uh, and then boom, the the floodgates open in the third period for Dallas. They go out, they score three, and I think that’s a great sign, too. Uh, they they have that five on three, the lengthy five on three to begin the third period. Like, you have to convert on that. And they got the job done. Simple stuff. They work it in front. Robo cleans it up for his first goal of the year. Like, that’s great to see. And going back to last year, the Stars power play really killed them early in the in the season when they had opportunities to maybe stay in games or to put games away. They couldn’t get that goal and tonight they got that goal. Um and I guess it doesn’t serve as the game winner. Uh but again, they they win by one tonight. Um and that was a big big tally. Um at the time because it was still within uh still within reach for for Winnipeg. I guess it still was based off how the the the game ended, but I mean they quieted that building. Uh I mean three goals in the opening three and a half minutes. Uh like that’s that’s really really good stuff. And I I just I think that that first 50 minutes of of what we saw to Dallas can be replicated. And I think that’s the biggest takeaway from from tonight that you have to take out of this. Uh final 10 minutes is awful. They can’t allow that to happen, but going on the road and just really just outworking Winnipeg. I mean, they were globe trotdering in the offensive zone at one point. Um and some of that too is like don’t play with your food. Like they gave up two short-handed goals. Like stop messing around. just bury the team. Um, and when you get to that point, why are you pressuring or or why are you so intact? Like they had the what, the four on three. Um, and there’s four guys below the tops of the circles. I mean, you’re up by four, but like let’s have somebody back. Let’s be careful. Um, you’re not looking for offense at that point. Um, you’re up five to one. You should you should cruise to a victory. Uh, of course that’s not how it it turned out. Uh but uh what a thrilling game and uh again the Stars stick to the script. They just love to make things interesting. It it don’t matter it don’t matter how much they get up for whatever reason. They find a way to let teams back in. Uh and it’s exhausting and they gave the the Metroplex uh a giant heart attack, but it’s two points and the Stars move on. Let’s talk about this Glen Goldson a bit more. It’s off and running. what we saw, what we liked, because I did want to highlight some more individual plays and stuff uh as well by certain individuals who were excellent tonight. So, we’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by FanDuel. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Glenn Gooson uh probably grew a thousand gray hairs in the final 10 minutes of regulation tonight, but uh he he picks up uh a great central division road victory to the tune uh of his club. They outshot Winnipeg in the game 37 to 25. They won 52% of the draws. They went 1 for5 on the power play. They were out hit 33 to to 21. They blocked 18 shots, only nine giveaways. Winnipeg had 22 on the night. U, that was something that was really highlighted tonight. Just the Stars puck possession in the offensive zone. They hang on to pucks. They make smart plays. They make simple plays. And as I said, the Stars were just running rampant in the offensive zone. um especially early in that third period, they could really do whatever they wanted. And that I think that comes too from wearing down Winnipeg in the first, you know, two periods. The first two periods were were really tightly contested uh really tightly contested game. Um it was I I think a really strong opening night. You would have thought it was maybe game 20 uh rather than than than game one. And then obviously the the third period was a bit helter skelter, but just the the Stars ability to to make plays. Look at the the Rantin goal to kick things off by, you know, winning possession um on the forch check. Then they work it low to high and then boom, they work it back out in front. Rantin is there. Um and then Ranson makes an incredible play um on the second goal for for Dallas. He just absolutely shrugs off the contact from a forch checker on the entry. Shields the puck away. Lungquist kind of finds that little soft spot in the high slot. Man, he was phenomenal tonight. That was just so so great to see out of Lquist after that season ending injury a year ago. And I mean that is a goalcorer shot. I mean he snipes hella buck from the top of the slot. Goes against the grain to beat him glove side. He graded out as the best star on the night. uh via hockey stat cards. You know, I love bringing up this 4.56 game score. Had a goal and an assist in the game. Um he he just was so steady. Um defensively, too, made some really strong plays. There was a play uh in the in the second period he made sort of tracking back. He had to shield off a a couple of oncoming four checkers. Um and then the Stars were able to to to work it up the ice which led to a scoring chance for for Tyler Sig. Those are those plays that we saw last year where he really grew when it came to uh to holding on to pucks when four checkers are on his tail and he’s able to make plays up the ice and uh the stars did that really really well for uh the majority of tonight’s game. Uh they were able to get out of their own zone um and they were they’ll hang on to pucks in the offensive zone. The Duchain Spinama goal to Sean was just chef’s kiss. Uh that was just tasty. Uh Duchain’s just toying with him there like thanks for coming. He flies by. Sean goes to the back door. Um bada bing bada boom was 4-1 uh Dallas at the time. But Neil Sunquist oh he he looked like a top four defenseman. Um and one of my predictions for the year he gets double digits um in goals. I think playing next to Harley uh teams are going to be really worried about 55. that’s gonna allow Lungquist to have a little less pressure. Um, and that was just a great play by him just to get into that little soft area. Like it’s a great play on on Mo of course he makes it shrugging off the the the four checker and then Lungquist just needs to fill a lane um and he finds him um and he just rips it in the back uh of the net. He was great. Um I do want to share some love to to Maverick Bour too. Um he he didn’t stuff the stat sheet tonight. He didn’t pick up a point um in the game, but uh on the penalty kill uh I believe it was in the first period. It could be wrong, could have been the second, but he made two goal saving plays on the PK. One, he gets a stick in the lane. The second, there’s a centering pass. I believe it’s to Ardi. Bourc has to step down. Miro goes to the guy behind the goal. It gets fed out in front. So, Bour had to step in to Phil and he lifts the stick of Ardi uh to break up that that scoring chance. Those are the type of plays like young players have to make. Um uh and maybe he doesn’t make that a year ago. Maybe that’s a play he doesn’t make, but but this year he was right on top of it. Made a really strong defensive play. I mean, the Stars PK uh picked up right where they left off. They go 4-4 tonight. Um and none bigger than the one of course in the final three minutes of of regulation, but um they used a ton of different bodies. It was good to see Miro killing some penalties. You know, Miro played 27 minutes on the night. Um, that was by far the most. Uh, Harley played 2152. So, I think that’s sort of a message from Goldson like he’s he’s going to lean on on number four. Um, Inir wasn’t great tonight. He had the the the trip. He he fell which led to Connor’s hatrick goal. Um, I I just thought he’s kind of easing himself into the into the season um a bit. Um, but you can obviously tell the world of difference when when he’s on the ice. You can look at the uh the shots for 19 shots when he’s on the ice, the most of any other player. Um, in in the contest, the Stars are just a better team. Um, and and we know that, uh, of course. Um but some individual scoring chances uh like when Mirror’s on the ice 20 scoring chances four that’s the most you know the big boys showed up too like like Ranton and Robo um again to to sort of hammer the point home about Robo it’s one of the best games I’ve I’ve seen from him in a while. I think he was moving better than he ever did uh la last year. Uh I just I think it’s going to be a massive year for for Robertson. Um, and just to see the crispness out of Dallas was really nice to see. Uh, defensively, like the the the defensive zone structure, you can see that they’re they’re working on it. It it’s going to be a work in progress. Um, just look at the the first Connor goal. Um, I I think that was um, if I had to guess, I think that was maybe Hint’s man. It maybe was I think it was Hint because he was a first forward back. It was really awkward since Meow was essentially backing and then when the puck got moved down to Shley, uh Meiro had to go out to Shley. Um and then Connor was was left all alone. I I would assume that’s probably H’s man. It maybe steals uh I guess it doesn’t really matter who’s whose man it is. Someone has to stay with him and Markham because he’s just all alone and he double clutches u and and beats him. But I I think what we saw the the final couple minutes too of the game too. I I think it’s exactly what the Stars are looking for and I would imagine Goldson sort of wants Winnipeg’s working around the perimeter. Stars did a good job staying in shooting lanes and they were forcing shots from outside the tops of the circles. Otter came up with some big saves. No rebounds, right? He gobbled up a couple of those shots and they kept Winnipeg to the to the outside. Um there’s a lot more pressure on the Stars wingers. Um, and I think pro more importantly probably the centers to do a bit more work in the in the defensive zone than I would say under Dbor. Uh, because from my perspective, it seems like he wants the defenseman to sort of just kind of anchor down towards the edges of the crease or just kind of anchor down in that general vicinity um to kind of clean up some of the the mess in front. And early on, the Stars did give up some some looks in the slot area. That’s something they have to be able to to shut down. um they didn’t really pay for it um to tonight, but they’re asking a lot I think uh like your Johnston’s your hints to to to to pressure guys on the outside um and allow I think their defenseman just to kind of stay more centrally located um and and keep things to the outside rather than trying to attack and kill plays like they uh like they have over the last uh couple years. And um I think we we got a good taste of that in the final, you know, couple minutes of the game where they were just hanging on for for dear life. But I mean just a lot of a lot of positive stuff. I that Bourke was great. I mean John was that we didn’t even get to Johnson. There’s so many good things out of so many different individuals. Uh I just I can’t get over ranting that he he may be the best value in the league at $12 million. Well, let’s add Kyle Connor to that now, too, who just signed a long-term deal. Um just just really incredible nights from some of the big boys on both teams. Um and and and don’t forget Lungquist kind of started off the segment with that man. Uh what what a strong game. Uh and I think Jim Dill has to be grinning in ear to ear. Um it’s been a while. He got a he gave up a first round pick for him, but it may be starting to come to fruition now under uh Goolitson. Uh let’s touch on the road hockey sort of term and phrase uh a bit too as we sort of celebrate this opening night victory. Um we can touch on the uh collapse that just fell short I suppose a bit as well. We’ll do that in just a moment. Some other numbers uh from the game um in case you’re interested uh time on ice numbers. So, so Johnson played the most. I I know there’s some discussions about Johnston Robo being on the third line with with Bourke, but I I I wouldn’t look into where the lines are are are sort of labeled uh just because like the Stars best players are going to are going to play more. Um and Johnston, yeah, may be on that the third line, but he played the most of any forward. Um mainly because he can touch the game in all areas, right? He’s he’s on the penalty kill. Um he ended up playing uh just over two minutes on the PK. Uh Steel played the most uh like he did a year ago. Um accumulated the most short-handed minutes. He he played uh 331. Uh but Johnson played the most of any other forward. He’s the only forward to eclipse the the 20 minute mark. You know, Roe played uh 19 and a half. Uh Rantin was just below that. Um, so there was a pretty steady distribution. Of course, there was a lot of power plays in the game. There was what, a total of of nine. So the minutes probably were not distributed ideally how Goldson uh wants to see it. You know, uh, Bastion played 740. Ritzcovian played 840. Would have liked to see a bit more of Ritzkovian. Uh, again, I I wouldn’t take too much stock in a game like this just because of the special teams. Um I think Ritzcoian would play a bit more if the game was played more at at five on five. So the game sort of dictated how minutes had to be distributed, but for you know a few of the shifts he had thought he looked pretty strong. I mentioned that he like went after Shley I love to see that. That’s a young guy um that that’s trying to to earn some respect from his teammates and going after him. Uh, you know, the the the fourth line I I think was as advertised. Um, you know, heavy on the forche. They were banging bodies. You know, Bastion, he made a couple really strong plays um in the first period in the defensive zone. Um, I was I was a bit he perked my ears a couple of times with some of the plays um he he made in the game and and just for the most part like the stars were were as advertised. And I think it goes back to to to Goldson coming into the season speaking out all summer. This is what we’re going to be. This is how we’re going to do it. This is how we’re going to execute it. And that first 50 minutes was a really really strong performance. Like that’s a great first impression from from Goliten uh on what the stars can be capable of. and it’s it’s it’s hard to just play a full 60 minutes in the NHL. Like Winnipeg’s a really damn good team. Uh and like they’re not going to just lay over, right? Uh they’re not going to lay down and roll over. Um and it can be hard to just continue to batter teams for 60 minutes. And I said that first two periods, you know, the third period kind of changes our perspective on everything, but that was a a really just strong, fun, solid hockey game. I’m going to and I I thought this feels like almost mid-season uh rather than opening night and then third period I think some of the the sloppiness uh certainly uh showed. Um but you can go down the box score. I I mean look at some of the nights some of these individuals had. Of course we mentioned Ranton and with the three points. Uh how many shots did he end up with? He ended up with with three shots. Uh Robertson had eight. Eight alone. He had eight shots. Hence had seven. Sean five. Ranton in three. Um like those are the guys you want getting shots. Uh too. Um like those numbers uh are are really really positive. Um and then on on the back end like Hastin had four shots. Um he was a minus two on the night. Uh unfortunately uh Lungquist was active. I mean goal assist for him hardly with two helpers. He had five blocks uh as well and um like that’s just a a really solid night um from the Stars and they did a lot of a lot of great things but again that sort of that that road hockey mentality. This is exactly what we saw from Dallas going into um a tough building and they just they weathered the storm a bit early. Otter made some some nice stops and they get their opportunities to score. They convert. Uh Hellob was excellent. And then Stars get on the power play as Winnipeg gets in penalty trouble. Um and and they make him pay for it. Dallas made him pay. Uh he would have liked to chip in a bit more like like one for five. You would have liked it to be maybe two for five. Uh but you know, Beggars can’t be choosers at this point. Like that was a massive goal at that juncture of the hockey game. and uh you’re going to need a lot of goals like like that um as as the season wears along. So, uh, just just really I think a a phenomenal first impression from from from Goldson and, um, and this is what we had hoped to see. Sort of goes back to the first segment, right? Like that can be replicated. Uh, like Dallas is strong enough to do and that’s without, you know, with Jamie Ben. And I had some concerns about the Stars without him because as I’ve stated a couple times, they don’t always look the same when Jaime’s out. He’s not out very much, but when he is stars don’t look terrible. They look really awesome. You’re going to have some people thinking um start saying that Jamie Ben shouldn’t even come back in the lineup after after what we uh we saw tonight. But let’s not kid ourselves. Jaime Ben can can help this team. Um maybe if they did have their their captain on the bench, maybe that third period doesn’t happen. uh like I’m playing hypotheticals at at this point, but uh you know, they have someone reiterating, “Hey, boys, stay with it. Let’s let’s let’s keep going. It’s not to take the foot off the the gas. Maybe uh that that doesn’t happen.” But man, those two short-handed goals, it just can’t happen, right? Like that that that has to be shut down. And and some of that, I think, is just a bit complacent from the the Stars power play, just thinking, oh, you know, like we’re up five to one, whatever. Um and and maybe they’re getting a bit overzealous. Um and you know Winnipeg is going to be aggressive like they have to get back in the game. It’s 5-1. Um and they they they’re going to have to try to score short-handed if they want to get back in the game and they did twice. Um so that that just that just can’t happen. And uh Golson is is not going to be happy about that. I’m I’m sure. Um and we’re going to hear about that in the postgame press conference. But all in all, like that’s just uh a solid 50minute hockey game from the Stars on the road. And uh I again I’m I am over the moon uh about about what we’ve saw from the Stars tonight. Uh I think that sort of exceeded my expectations. Um and I think that’s good. Uh the Stars are off and running. They’re 1 and0. They got two points in the bank and now they got Colorado tomorrow which is going to be fascinating. Um they can’t do what they did the final two minutes or final 10 against Colorado. Uh because that’s probably the deepest team in the Central Division and um it’s another great test. Stars passed one of them. U but um really really great stuff all around. I know I keep sort of hammering that that point home but uh hey I’m I’m happy with it. A bit mindbgggled. um uh after the the the short-handed goals and just the butt clinching segment of of the game. But um I think what we’re Stars fans here. We’ve we’ve gotten used to that. That’s just that’s the last decade of hockey um for uh for the Stars. So uh but that’s going to do it for today’s episode. Great to be back breaking down games, meaningful hockey games once again. Uh, appreciate all of you for tuning in on today’s episode, making us a part of your day. Please be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already. But uh have a great weekend Stars fans and we’ll see you on the next episode of Locked on Stars. So long.

  1. A win is a win despite that almost hideous ending in the 3rd period by the Stars (giving up two shorthanded goals in that period is inexcusable). The Stars' sixth-straight season opener win which currently the longest streak in the NHL.

  2. Mikko should be the stars next captain, full stop. He’s a natural leader, by example and by the way he handles the media. Seems to enjoy answering questions with articulation and the boys have a great deal of respect for him in the room. He’s a leader.

  3. Shout out to Lundquist who got a goal and an assist and finished the night with the best +/- of either team (+3). I know people don't like that stat, but I think when it's above 2 in either direction or in a game that had 9 goals, it becomes more significant.

  4. We looked great last night. We were owning them. Great for 50 minutes. Needs a little clean up, but overall, for the 1st game of the season we looked awesome. We were playing with our food there for a while. I liked our effort. Robertson looked strong. Duchene was killing it. Rantanen was enforcing his will in guys. The whole team was really making things looked easy. If we had lost we would be screaming right now, but we didn’t. Wasn’t the way we wanted but it was a win. A little tweaking here or there and we’re a strong team. We re strong. It’s hard to imagine we could be better lol but we can be. Great game. Saturday against the Avs is going to be SPICY! Let’s go Stars!!

  5. I absolutely loved what I saw yesterday. Sure they got careless at the end but that can easily be corrected. It doesn’t take away the domination I saw for 50 min.

  6. How well did Jake Oettinger play?? He looked like he played well. The thing I noticed is that after the Stars scored 5 goals that they let them crawl back within one so keeping and holding a lead is something they need to work on in my opinion.
