BIG Cowboys Rumors After Panthers Loss: FIRE Matt Eberflus? Season OVER? Trade Rumors? Blame Jerry?

[Music] Good morning. Welcome back into the Cowboys report. I am Tom Downey. We’re doing some overreaction Monday to the Cowboys extremely frustrating 30-27 loss at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. Spoiler alert, a lot of today’s show focuses in on the defense. If you want the Cowboys defense to stop sucking and stop finding new annoyingly creative ways to be bad on that side of the football, show it by liking today’s video, please. And thank you. Let’s get to overreaction number one. It is time for the Dallas Cowboys to fire Matt Eberloose. This is not an overreaction. I Come on, man. I This is so bad on this side of the ball. We’ll go more in depth on it on this afternoon show. This reminds me of the Mike Nolan defense. I’m over this. I don’t have the patience anymore. I’m an old man with two kids. I don’t have the patience to deal with this crap anymore. It’s not working. Whatever Eberloose is trying to do. A not sure the players agree with it. Pretty I think pretty clearly they don’t agree with it there. And it’s just fa a failure left and right, left and right. It’s all kinds of bad. I honestly don’t know who your short-term replacement is. Maybe it’s just Aaron White Cotton. We’ll do a short-term long-term replacement video uh this week as well. I honestly don’t care anymore. Like, it’s reached the point of like it if it’s worse, can it actually be? I don’t know anymore. Like, do something. Change something up because just doing the same thing over and over again isn’t going to work. Lot of valid uh consternation given to the fourth and third defensive play call. Everyone points out to Ron Bland playing off coverage. I mentioned this in the moment. I mentioned in our postgame show, too. Nick Harris confirming you’re you’re asking your inside linebacker standing up there over the guard Kenneth Murray to cover the flat on the opposite side, but he’s also supposed to be aware of a potential slant on the inside near side and that nickel on the the trip side. So, Bland is playing off like he’s supposed to do cuz that’s how he’s coached to do. And you’re also asking your linebacker to get all the way across the formation and cover it off. That’s probably asking too much of Kenneth Murray. That’s a scheme failure. That’s what that is. I If that’s going to be your plan to bait him into the slant, he’s got to fly over there quickly. I don’t know if Kenneth Murray is going to that. I don’t know why he has he has T. I think it’s because he does have, you know, inside coverage responsibilities as well. That’s asking too much. That’s like if your whole plan is to bait these the slant, then you have to have it covered off and you don’t. I think that’s a coaching failure. This is your run fit on on one. This is a sevenyard gain, by the way. Do you know why? You are begging to get the ball rammed down your throats off the right side of the line. You’re begging for it. You You got your defensive end. He kicks inside. So, he’s lined up on as a shade uh off the the tackle. You have three box players over there. The this the center. So, the inside the hashes, the Panthers have six offensive linemen or blockers from the left hash to the right hash. Obviously from, you know, left from the offense point of view, you have five defenders. What are you supposed to do? That this is a this is a run fit. Like you’re you’re asking to get it rammed down your throats. And this was plentiful on the screen. Again, it feels like Mike Nolan all over again where we’re talking about run fits because you’re just not setting them up for success. Of course, you lost seven yards on this play. You got Dante Fowler and James Houston out there as your edge rushers. OSA gets duoed because or double team. I don’t know if it’s actually duo inside zone. Like what do you expect’s gonna happen here? It’s an embarrassment. It’s an embarrassment. Do you want Matt Eberloose fired? I I am certainly at this point and I think many of you are as well. Why for yes and for no? Let me know in the comments section of today’s show. Overreaction number two. It’s not just Matt Eberloose’s fault. And this is not an overreaction. It is not just the fault of Matt Iberluse that the Cowboys defense is among the NFL’s worst and the worst we’ve seen since Mike Nolan. The players get blamed here too. And I am a little bit concerned that nobody seems to be mad on the players in game. Like I want to see a helmet thrown. Show some energy and some passion. Brian Shottenheimer after the game was talking about effort. I don’t care that they’re trying hard, that the coaches and players are doing their best. Darn it. This is not three-year-old Olivia’s soccer game. This is the professional football league. Go do more than effort. Effort is the baseline. If you’re not giving effort, you should be cut and you should be fired. It is the minimum that should be expected out of you as professional football players and professional coaches. I don’t care about effort. You start talking about, oh, we’re trying hard. It means you just suck. That’s what that means. I need more than effort. I need results. And they are lacking in every single phase on the defensive side of the ball right now. Oh, by the way, the front office gets blamed, too. Happy birthday, Jerry Jones. This is on you, too, cuz I They can lie all they want. Their plan was not to let Matt Eberfloose design a defense for months on end based on the one of the top five players in football and then oh trade him away at the last. That was not the plan going in. Now it’s a failure of Eberloose to not set it up. But this falls on the shoulders of Jerry Jones too. He hired Matt Eberloose. Let’s be honest. Come on. You announced Shottimer and then you announce Ilfloose leak it the same day. Come on. That was a front office hire. You built the roster defensively. You’re the GM. You shoulder all of this in the end. The Buck stops with you. Jerry Jones wants to get up there in his pregame radio show, which nobody else does in football, and make a joke about, “Oh, our defenders are are scared to even show up against Rico Dattle.” Then they rammed it down your throats and then you don’t talk postgame. Pick one, Jerry. You’re soft. Either sit up there and take it and stop getting all defensive and offended when we all call you out for building a crappy team or don’t talk period. Pick one. You can’t just duck the media after you sit up there and talk a big game and then run and hide after it goes poorly. Pick one. Either don’t talk, that’s the proper answer, by the way, or always talk and sit up there and take a cuz they it’s never their fault. Never their fault. It’s always somebody else’s. And they deserve all the blame, frankly. And other coaches get blamed, too, by the way. You know, I don’t We’ll talk about Sean Hammer. Boy, that third down, that final play calling thing was something. It I other coaches get blamed. I I do want to make that clear. So, who do you blame the most for this defense right now? Uh, A for all is the correct answer, but pick one for the most. C for the coaches, F. P for the players. Let me know in the comments section of today’s show. Overreaction number three. The season’s over now. It’s cooked. We’re done. You’re not doing anything. This is an overreaction for now. I have not yet played my must-win card. Uh I know some of you wanted to play it each of the past two weeks. I think you have to play it against the Commanders this week. Um, the reality is for this Cowboys team, you needed to be at least three wins going through week six, if not four, frankly. And the tie may have benefited you. You could have gotten away with three. I think you have to beat the Commanders next week cuz you’re looking ahead playoff picture-wise. You have losses against the Bears and the Panthers, and that’s going to matter a lot because those are going to be wildcard teams potentially. you lose to to to the commanders, it’s it’s probably over at that point. Like at that point, you’re staring down the barrel. You’re sitting there 24 and one. At that point, the freaking Giants might catch you in the division. And then you got Denver, Arizona, who also might be a little bit broken in prime time. Raiders. You know, even if you win two of those games, at that point you’re still sitting at 500 before you get the Eagles, Chiefs, Lions, Vikings, Chargers, Commanders, Giants, less than 500, excuse me. You’re going to be below 500. Then I it’s just that’s going to be too much. So like realistically, feels like the season is about to be over. Actually, I’m going to give this one overreaction for now at least. I I I reserve the right to change my mind if you win your next two games. Look, the defense clearly needs help like in terms of getting additions. is like your defense isn’t good enough right now. My concern, and I felt this way after each loss, it might be beyond saving cuz you’re asking your offense to have the perfect game to even give you a chance to win or at least a near-perfect game to give you a chance to win. I think the defense is might be beyond saving, at least at a cost that makes sense. You start flipping your first and second and future threes and twos and ones, you can get good players back. Like, you start overpaying, you can get guys at the deadline. I I think it is reasonable to go should you overpay though. That might not be a good idea. So check back again in two weeks. You know, let’s see how things play out against the Commanders. See how things play out against the Broncos. By that time, we will know if this team is a buyer or if they are a seller. And I think this is a valid reaction. I thought early on, didn’t like it. Valid reaction uh for me in terms of the the Shanimer struggling side. I went back and watched it cuz I hate myself and I’m a masochist and I can’t resist. Uh, the final three offensive play calls were unbelievably stupid. I know it’s resultsbased. Acknowledging that I said the moment it felt like they were all designed swings and screens. They were. The first one was an obvious throwback screen. You know, they lose five yards. Next play, Dak looks to the right and then goes right back to the left side. They have a lead blocker over there and Jake Ferguson. The Panthers snuffed it out. Ferguson missed his block. It wouldn’t have mattered. There were two guys in the area for one blocker. The math was not mathing at all. Uh that was a loss. The final third down play was also the same. You know, set everyone vertically and then do the design swing to lift key in the flat with a lead blocker. That what are you doing? George Pickings, who we’ll talk about in a little bit, was absolutely cooking. And you you took the ball out of your quarterback and playmakers hands to do swings to Javvante Williams and Hunter Lipkkey. Why? I think they were too committed trying to run the ball on early downs. The offensive line did not have a good day up front. The run blocking was not particularly great. That little third and one toss play at short yardage one. They’re trying to seal it with Brock Hoffman and Tyler Smith and they just didn’t seal it. Gayton gets downhill like he’s supposed to, but because it wasn’t sealed up, Javvante can’t cut it up inside and that leads the outside corner to get around everybody. It just it was bad. Look, it it’s all results based. if if the screen goes for 20 yards, we’re praising it. But it did feel like a lot of times Dak was out there checking multiple times potentially in two different plays. And I’ve said this before about offenses, and I I I think it is absolutely true because I see this as a as a complaint of, well, Dak just shouldn’t change the play. If your solution to fixing an offensive issue is, well, the quarterback should just completely change the the play call, you’re not actually mad at the quarterback who played great again, by the way. You’re actually mad at the play caller. Like, that that is not a quarterback issue. If the solution you’re presenting is just completely change the play call, no, that that’s that’s that’s not right. That’s a bad process. That’s not the quarterback’s fault. It’s credit to the He can’t save you every play call, guys. If if that’s what’s going on, you have a coaching issue. That’s what that means. There’s there’s no other valid argument. Like, miss me with the well, Dak should just change the play every time. Then what? The coach has a job to do, too. He’s the play caller. Come on, guys. Final overreaction. I was very impressed by George Pickkins, which again, why you didn’t call a play for George Pickkins on one point on that final drive blows my mind. Like, just keep throwing it to him. It’s working. Proper reaction. I I I think Pickkins is playing some great ball right now. Uh he has stepped up in every way. He looks dialed in. We haven’t seen the crash out yet. If the defense keeps playing like maybe we will. Nine for 168 and a Tutty for George Pickkins. He’s playing great ball. Um, honestly, George Pickkins, Dak Prescott, hats off to you. Offensive line pass protection was actually pretty solid. Uh, no one else gets a passing grade for me from the defense. Um, I thought Ezaraku played pretty good ball, but like, you know, he’s not playing enough, frankly. That’s different conversation for a different day. [Music]
