Just got ol’ boy back from the grader. I loved how he played with the small old school mitt.

  1. Before Barry and Posey I absolutely adored Matt Williams. Oh how the mighty have fallen 😕

  2. Interesting how the philosophy of batting orders changed over the last few decades. Back when he played he was considered a #2 hitter in the lineup, batting behind a weak hitting, speedy, OBP leadoff hitter, Brett Butler. He had some pop and would often sacrifice bunt a lot. Then the #3 hitter was considered the best hitter who combined average and power, with the #4 hitter being the biggest power hitter in the lineup. Other than striking out way too much for a #2 hitter (they usually liked a good contact hitter,) he is what most would consider the ideal #2 hitter back then.

Now most teams put their best hitter in the leadoff spot or #2 spot instead of the #3 spot, and their biggest power hitter in the #2 spot. Look at the current Mariners lineup. If that Giants lineup played today, Clark or Mitchell would leadoff, with Mitchell, Clark, or Williams batting #2, with the other batting #3. Thompson and Butler would most likely bat #8 or #9.

  3. Robby was great but William Nuschler Clark Jr. will always be my all-time favorite Giant!!

  4. I loved Thompson, dude got dirty in the 1st inning. I thought it was great he played with the same glove his whole career and used chicken wire to help keep the shape.

  5. As a kid you wanted to emulate your favorite players. I fondly remember wanting to be like Robby playing 2B and hitting second. The other was playing RF like Willie McGee!

  6. 1. Butler
    2. Thompson
    3. Clark
    4. Mitchell
    5. Williams
    6. Sheridan
    7. Maldonado
    8. Uribe

BYW Thompson/Uribe double plays were the best in baseball

  7. Hell yeah! I was a 2nd baseman in little league during his Giants tenure, so of course he was one of my favorites.

  8. It’s pretty wild how old school that photo and card look. I remember looking through that card set the year it came out and thinking it looked so modern compared to the photos of cards from the 1960’s. But looking at the photo, it kind of looks like it was taken in the 60s now!

  9. Definitely one of mine. I went ballistic when Hoffman hit him in the face. He was such a stud in ’93 for us.
