The New Orleans Saints head coach Kell Moore, quarterback Spencer Rattler, and a defense that just had five consecutive takeaways all have the opportunity to prove critics wrong this weekend up against the New England Patriots. In a little while, I’m going to tell you why the Patriots are beatable. But before we get to that, I wanted to make sure that I made it very clear and very apparent why this game is important. This is a game that has already been shown by the NFL that they don’t necessarily care too much about it, right? It was a 3:25 p.m. Central time kickoff that would have kind of placed it in its own little spot amongst the late afternoon games. It ends up getting flex back two weeks ago to noon. So, just kind of, you know, fog horns or air horns rather from the NFL saying that this game isn’t important. But for the New Orleans Saints, this game is massively important. I don’t know if you saw, but if you watch Thursday Night Football, the same New York Giants team that came here to New Orleans, turned the ball over five times, and was a part of the New Orleans Saints getting their first win of the season, just went back home to East Rutherford in New Jersey on a short week, Sunday to Thursday, and beat decisively, handedly the Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles. Now there’s no transitive property in football. There’s no if you beat this team who beat this team. Like if team A beats team B and team B beats team C, it does not mean that team A is better than team C, right? There’s no it’s not there’s correlation causation is not the same thing. Um but what I mean to say is there are a lot of people who win the Saints beat the New York Giants but ah well it’s the Giants. It’s a rookie quarterback. It’s a rookie running back. It’s a not so good defense. so on and so forth and then wrote off the New Orleans Saints because they said that the Giants lost the game as opposed to the Saints winning the game. Now the Giants just went and beat the reigning Super Bowl champions on a short week of football. So what I mean to say here is that the Saints win against the Giants may have actually shown a little bit more than people might have been willing to give credit. regardless of what it shown or showed uh in that first matchup or in that first win. None of it matters if you can’t turn it into something. Now, I’m not expecting the New Orleans Saints to rip off a sevengame win streak or anything crazy like that, but with an opportunity here to prove something up against a better team that is on their way here to New Orleans and the New England Patriots, a great young quarterback that is the second most accurate quarterback in the NFL right now, completing 73.9% of his passes, only behind Jared Goff, who completes 75.2% of his passes. The Lions, we can talk about them another day. Uh, but the Saints could prove that last weekend’s win against the New York Giants was no fluke. That last weekend’s ability on the defensive side of the football to take the football away was no fluke. That Kell Moore’s ability to stack and scaffold and build the offense from week one to week five now going into week six was no fluke. and that Spencer Radler winning his first career game was no fluke. This is an important game for the New Orleans Saints. Every game is important in the NFL. We we know that, right? It could be the difference between one game of being a wild card team to being on the couch at home watching wild card weekend. Could be that simple, right? It could be a tie. That’s the deciding factor. And so to go into a game and understand that not only is it important from the NFL side of things, but important in terms of proving who you are, proving your identity, proving that what you’re doing is working, proving that your process has a product at the end of it that you can be proud of, that fans can be proud of, that a team can win with, so on and so forth is even makes it even more important. And so I think that this weekend the New Orleans Saints do have a true opportunity to prove naysayers, to prove critics, to prove those who doubt them wrong. And I would consider myself in the early class of people that doubted them. And I’m not sure that a win over the New York Giants changes my mind. So I’m in the number of people who would be proved wrong by the New Orleans Saints with a victory. Although I think I’m picking the Saints to win this game. I did in the squad show with Dylan and John and Lance um in last night’s squad show, which if you didn’t catch that, you can go back and and and check that out. But I I do think that there is a real opportunity for New Orleans here. And so, look, you’re not going up against the Super Bowl champions. You’re not going up against a Super Bowl team in the New England Patriots, but you’re going up against a very good team, a great good young quarterback, a phenomenal wide receiver leading the way, a fantastic tight end leading the way, a strong offensive line, a strong defensive line, and some good talented secondary players as well over on that defense. This New England Patriots team, oh, by the way, well coached by Mike Vrabel, right? This New England Patriots team coming to town is a true test for New Orleans. And I think one of the big things that Kell Moore has a real opportunity to prove here is that the New Orleans Saints cannot just do what it is that they’ve done in the past, which is beat teams that they are better than, but that they can beat teams that are better than them. And the Saints have gotten close already this season. The Arizona Cardinals hanging into that game. San Francisco 49ers hanging into that game. Really, and honestly, the Buffalo Bills, they hung into that game until about 5 minutes left. I think the the missed touchdown connection between Spencer Rattler and Brandon Cooks, you can look at that as a turning point. I think the roughing the kicker call on the punt is really kind of what put the game to bed at least if not being the turning point in and of itself. So, the Saints have shown that they can compete and hang with to a certain point some of the better teams in the league or some of the teams that are better than them. And I would say that the New York, excuse me, the New England Patriots are the better team when it comes to them versus the New Orleans Saints. But the better team is not always the team that wins on paper. Excuse me, the better team on paper is not always the team that wins. And also, if the Saints can move from just being competitive to now all of a sudden winning games or being in position at least to win games against opponents that on paper are better than them, it would prove a lot and it would prove a lot of growth from week one to week six just under Kell Moore’s leadership. So, a very, very important game here on the way for the New Orleans Saints. And they might be getting a very, very important piece back on their defense at the same time who could be absolutely huge for this New Orleans Saints team. And that of course is edge rusher and edge defender Chase Young. Let’s break that down next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. We were just laying out how important this game is for Kell Moore, Spencer Rattler, the New Orleans Saints, and I mentioned how important it is for the New Orleans Saints defense as well, who now has a little something to prove, but might be getting a big something back in terms of helping them do exactly that. Chase Young has been back at practice. He snuck out of he snuck into practice on Wednesday. Shout out to Nick Underh Hill New Orleans football for catching that. Uh but he was back out there not only Wednesday but also Thursday yesterday participating in practice. We’ll assume for right now that he’ll be out there later on today. We’ll find out in a matter of hours. Uh but for New Orleans, getting Chase Young back at all would be a big time benefit for them. One of the biggest things that this New Orleans Saints team is going to need to do if they want to get a win against the New England Patriots is make Drake May uncomfortable. He has looked very, very comfortable here throughout the 2025 season so far. I mentioned earlier how stellar he has been completing 73 and a half% of his passes or 73.9% of his passes nearly 74%. uh and being in a situation to where he is, you know, kind of dicing up defenses right now, has the opportunity to kind of sit back and make things happen. He’s got two great pass catching options to go to as well. And so, in order for you to disrupt that, you have got to get him kind of offkilter a little bit, which is not easy to do without putting pressure on him. But putting pressure on him does have a bit of an impact. His passer rating, according to Pro Football Focus, drops from 118.9, very good passer rating when he’s kept clean, to 69.3, a not so nice passer rating when under pressure. He’s completing only 55% of his passes when under pressure. And his yards per attempt goes from 8 1/2 to 7.6. And so that’s a yard full stop there, or drop there rather, uh, where you can go ahead and get some opportunities going up against him. We also watch his turnover uh his turnover worthy uh pass percentage on nearly double as well while under pressure. So that’s going to be a big part of what it is that the Saints are going to have to do in this game in a solid rotation of Cam Jordan, Carl Grannerson, and now Chase Young can go a long way. We outlined this a little bit in our squad show last night as well, but one of the things that Chase Young does, not just in terms of actually going out there and putting pressure on a quarterback, is that he makes offenses have to pay attention. And in making offenses pay attention to him, it could open up opportunities for other players like Carl Grannerson, who should have five and a half sacks on the season, unfortunately has four and a half. Cam Jordan, who looked really good to start off the regular season and has done some things that have still been good. good. I mean, he had that fumble recovery up against Jackson Dart. Has taken a couple of really good angles on some QB uh escapes as well as some uh some plays out of the back field that have limited a lot of yardage and of course has gotten to the quarterback a few times himself. But beyond just the other edge rushers, Brian Brezie has been playing really, really well so far this season, but hasn’t necessarily been able to get home and finish those plays. But if Chase Young is forcing a a quarterback to stay in the pocket, maybe Brian Brezie ends up doing more than just looking good with those spin moves and instead racking up some opportunities. Last year’s sack leader for the New Orleans Saints with seven and a half. And so getting him more involved and e elevating what he can do because of the attention that has to be shifted over to Chase Young. Chase Young Junk can steal some of those double teams and then allow some of these other guys to get some of these one-on-one opportunities. And then of course he’s going to wreak havoc himself, not only as a solid pass rusher, but also as a solid run defender as well. The Saints have wanted to have Chase Young out on the field for some time. Chase Young’s wanted to be out on the field for some time, but haven’t been able to do it as they kind of played things really slow with that calf injury early on in the season. But now it looks like he’s at least getting closer to being back. If he’s not back this week, then certainly would be next week. But at this point, it feels like it’s trending towards a positive outcome when it comes to this weekend. We’ll see what happens later on in today’s practice. But even beyond the defensive line, we can go outward from there, right? Alante Taylor is a guy that has not been utilized as much as a pass rusher as I think we expected going into this year. How much does that change with a Chase Young potentially on the same side as him? Right. If you’re sending Chase Young and Alante Taylor, uh, if you’re sending Chase Young as a pass rusher and then Alante Taylor as a blitzer, coming from the same side of the field, that feels like that can create some havoc for an opposing offense. Being able to get more pressure on the quarterback, be more disruptive, all those pieces, regardless of where that pressure is coming from. if Chase Young raises that ceiling for the New Orleans Saints or really even more importantly raises the floor because the Saints are 29th or 30th in the NFL right now when it comes to pressure percentage. Chase Young had 73 pressures according to NextGen stats last year. He was a top 10 uh pressure getter last season and that was a careerhigh for him last year and what I would call a lesser defense, right? lesser defensive scheme because you were running for the second half of the season, you’re running a Dennis Allen scheme called by somebody else, right? And so now you’ve got Brandon Staley calling his scheme, which look, there’s been some things that haven’t necessarily all come to fruition, but you saw how dramatic that defense can improve very quickly once everything falls into place just last week up against the Giants. Now you add a potential pass rush to it and again, the ripple effects go even beyond Alante Taylor. will keep moving out. Look at what it can do for coverage down the field. We’ve already seen how much guys like Quincy Riley and Yonas Sanker and Kool-Aid McKinstry have been comfortable making plays on the football. Justin Reed is trending towards being back out on the field who can hopefully kind of, you know, uh, raise his impact opportunities a little bit with a, you know, really good and productive pass rusher added to the system in addition to another good and productive pass rusher in Carl Granderson. How does that impact the rest of the defense? Well, it’s a major benefit for this team. And this team, this defense in particular, probably wants to prove a little bit that, hey, last week’s output of five takeaways, five consecutive takeaways. They might not repeat that, but they want to prove that it wasn’t a fluke and that they can still make have an impact at the football. We talked to Brandon Staley on Thursday and one of the things that he talked about was the game within the game and how that is working and started to kind of fall into place for a guy like Kool-Aid McKenry who just won NFL defensive player of the week. Had two interceptions, a pass break up, four tackles, and a big time block down the field at one point while he was blocking for Jordan Howden on the fumble recovery touchdown that went back 86 yards. One of the big things that he described when he talked about that was understanding, okay, well, when this guy lines up in this place, what routes do they like to run there? What is the release like off of there when there’s that much space and this person is the lone receiver on this side is kind of the weak side split end. What does that mean in terms of the route combinations they could potentially run or not necessarily route combinations but the route variation that this one receiver has coming from this particular point on the field. all these other things down distance uh game situation all those things and that he feels like those things are starting to fall into place for Kool-Aid McKenry and this would be a huge week for that to fall into place going up against Stefon Diggs going up against a guy like Kahan Booty who can help you out uh on the offensive side probably going to end up matched up with a guy like Hunter Henry and they’re going to dictate some of those matchups every now and then the New England Patriots will and so having a big- time pass rush would be huge in playing into the real benefits of what is happening for the game slowing down, the game within a game starting to make sense on the secondary side and for these young players that are looking to go out there and make plays. Adding Chase Young back to this offense, excuse me, this defense would be huge for the New Orleans Saints in this matchup, which is winnable because the New England Patriots are beatable. I’ll tell you why next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, put a lock on Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode of Locked on Saints is brought to you by friends over at FanDuel. You find a heavy favorite that’s trailing at halftime, especially with college football. Maybe you go ahead and put some down on that potential comeback. You can get in on all of that over at FanDuel today. So, what are you waiting for? Head over to fanduel.com today to download the FanDuel app and get started. That’s fanduel.com where you can download the FanDuel app and get started today. Let’s get it. Who that Asian? The New Orleans Saints next opponent. The New England Patriots are a beatable football team. Now, does that mean that the New Orleans Saints will win? No. But does it mean that they can win? Yes. And I understand that the New Orleans Saints just got their first win of the season up against the New York Giants, but I’m not trying to overplay where the New Orleans Saints are. We know that this is a team that’s not a competitor in terms of playoffs and Super Bowl and all those other things. I’m not trying to misconrue what the New Orleans Saints are, but what I am trying to drive home is that this is a winnable game and therefore it should be judged as such. If the Saints can’t win it, that’s a negative. If the Saints do win it, it’s a positive. can’t really come out of this New England Patriots game and go, “Oh, well, you know, they were outmatched like we did coming out of the Saints loss to the Buffalo Bills, for instance.” And it was like, “Hey, you know what? They did a pretty good job. They were hanging in there.” All this, we can’t talk about them being the Patriots game like that if the Saints go out there and lose. And especially if they go out there and lose in a decisive fashion. But if they go out there and win in a decisive fashion, then we have to look at it from the opposite perspective of like, hey, that’s a really, really good win. And this could be a very, very good win for the New Orleans Saints. And there are three reasons why I think that this game is winnable for New Orleans. I’ll start with the two reasons why I think that the New England Patriots are beatable and then I’ll get to the one thing about the New Orleans Saints that makes me feel like this is a winnable game for them. Two things that I’m going to look at very very basic. I’m not going to try to overplay this or overdo this with a bunch of fancy things or whatever. Super simple. The New England Patriots passing defense is awful. The New England Patriots rushing offense is awful. Those are the two things right there that make the New England Patriots beatable. The New Orleans, excuse me, the um New England Patriots defense ranks right around the same place on passing defense as the Saints offense ranks when it comes to uh passing offense. What do I mean by that? The Saints passing offense is number 25 in the NFL. The Patriots passing defense is number 26 in the NFL. So, which one is more likely to catch fire? Usually, a passing offense is more likely to catch fire than a passing defense. Now, you might look at last week’s game up against the New York Giants as being an example of the polar opposite. However, really, it was the three fumbles first that started the takeaway situation for New Orleans and the giveaway situation for the Giants. All three of those coming in those different scenarios. And so, it wasn’t really the passing offense until the Giants got desperate towards the end of the game, started, you know, throwing some ill-advised passes and things like that. One of them got taken advantage of by Koulie McKenry. The second interception was just that Koulie McKenry knew the route that the receiver was going to run better than the receiver knew he was going to run it. And so he was able to go out there and make a play on that again the game within the game like what Brandon Staley had highlighted uh that we referenced earlier. And so if the Saints offense, passing offense in particular, catches fire and gets not even catches fire like kind of gets a little bit of a smolder, starts to smoke a little bit, uh then I think that that could be major for New Orleans because it could open up some opportunities for them to go out there and finally put more points on the board. You might say, Ross, well, they scored 26 points last week. Yeah. Yeah, sure. But the offense scored 19. Seven was due to the defense, right? With a fumble return touchdown. I guess you could say six was due to the defense and then so you could say 20 was scored by the Saints offense or their field goal kicker, right? Point afters as well as field goals. But for the Saints, this is a real opportunity for that offense to really start to find its way. And I think that the Saints started doing a very good job of that last week, going up against the New York Giants and finding a way to move the ball through the air, finally catching that big play, 87yard touchdown. It doesn’t take much more than that. the big play and the ripple effect of the big play is a real thing. And so finding a way to be able to take advantage of that a little bit more and a little bit more consistently against the NFL’s 26th ranked passing defense is more than certainly an opportunity that will be available to them. The Patriots rushing offense is ranked number 27. The New Orleans Saints rushing defense is ranked number 20. So again, two things that are muddling around in the middle. Here is a situation where I would say that what’s more likely to catch fire is a rushing offense rather than a rushing defense. But with Antonio Gibson hurt, with Trayvon Henderson still kind of getting up to the NFL speed and with Randre Stevenson having some fumble issues, uh, then this to me gives the New Orleans Saints a pretty good opportunity to not allow the New England Patriots to control the clock. And if they’re able to do that, then that’s going to benefit whatever it is that they can do in terms of getting more possessions over on the offensive side for that passing offense going up against a subpar passing defense. And so if the Saints can keep the New England Patriots from being gifted a rushing game, a run game, then that would go a long way for New Orleans because the Saints might not be able to run very successfully up against the New England Patriots. New England Patriots defense is ranked number four in the NFL when it comes to rushing defense. And that is not by some kind of fluke. That is a very very good rushing defense. It’s a very very good defensive line as a whole. Guys like Harold Landry and um Keon White and uh uh uh Caleb Chasan, uh uh Christian Barmore and Milton Williams. Like that’s a really good defensive line right there. And so for New Orleans, getting a run game going is going to be a little bit tough. However, stopping the New England Patriots run game will help to kind of offset that. And so, New England has struggled to run the football. Yes, they had a couple of touchdowns on the ground last week up against the Bills coming off that Monday night game, which by the way, they’re also coming off of a short week and an emotional win up against Buffalo. Those are all things that could work to the New Orleans Saints advantage as well. Much like the New England Patriots, excuse me, New York Giants last week came off of that emotional win up against the Los Angeles Chargers in Jackson Dart’s first start and all those things. These are the two things that I think make the New England Patriots beatable. Poorest passing defense, not a very successful rushing offense. What I think is the biggest signifier to me that the New Orleans Saints have a real shot to win a football game again is the amount of change they have undergone looking from week one over to week five. This has not been a stagnant offense that has not re that has refused to adjust. This has been an offense that has gotten a little bit better and a little bit better and a little bit better and has continued to adjust to its opponent. Has continued to adjust what it is that it wants to do in terms of its identity and is still figuring out some of those things which makes them beatable just as much as the Patriots might be. But I love the fact that Kell Moore, Brandon Staley, this New Orleans Saints offense and defense have done all the things necessary to keep evolving, keep changing, and keep growing in order to be able to create some progress through their process. And as long as the New Orleans Saints continue to do that and stay on a bit of an upward trajectory, not a skyrocketing trajectory, but at least a little bit of a gradual upswing, then I think that that could help the New Orleans Saints walk away with some wins that others might not expect them to get. So, it is for those reasons, but I think the New Orleans Saints can win this game on Sunday against the New England Patriots. All right, we will see you after the game on Sunday with our Saint squad. And of course, I’ll have you covered after the game as well. We appreciate you very much as always for making this a party day part of your routine, for saying yes to me and the show. 1. This is the most accurate title you could have posted! I’m tired of the fan base acting as if Sean and brees didn’t change our pedigree and standards. Prove us wrong (The Critics) baby! WhoDat ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️

  2. Hell yeah go with the sky rocket analogy. Because if Spencer Rattler completes those TD passes he missed in those earlier games, we are totally different offense.

  3. We got this one game at a time take care of the ball and be discipline on defense we gone be alright it’s black and gold vs everybody ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️

  4. You're wrong, Ross. 😂 We beat the Giants. The Giants beat the Eagles. The Saints are better than the Eagles. It's simple logic, guys. We're Super Bowl-bound! 2028! 😂😂😂

  5. This team reminds me of the Lions team that seemed to be in it every week, even when they lost. They eventually became a team no one wanted to play even as underdogs. And now, they're contenders. The Saints needs a few more impact draft pieces, and unfortunately, no longer use the services of its old veterans. If this team shows fight every week, I can see them in their second and third years in this system being a problem in the NFL.
Great job as always, Ross. Even when you report bad things about the team, you keep it hopeful, unlike some of your colleagues. Thank you.

  6. Pats played snf. Not Monday. So not really a short week. You said that on the locked on podcast too so I just wanted to lyk Ross for the rest of the week. Luv ❤

  7. The Giants were energized after that embarrassment in New Orleans. New Orleans will be energized knowing they embarrassed a good team. New England has to match that energy… but I don't think they will.

  8. Exactly my thoughts ross!! The fact that we beat this same Giants team that just dismantled the Eagles shows this team is actually much better than what the mainstream media and the fanbase thinks!! We have so much talent on both sides of the ball, so why can't we actually have a chance????

  9. Saints should be -3 fav at home in this one. It'll be a good game in Orleans tomorrow.
Pats are not a "better team." They are a project with a promising young QB, much like Saints.
Saints can score and move the ball better than Pats, but Pats are a bit better on defense. Neither is amazing.

Saints schedule is pretty easy here on out. Their play calls will get better, and less drives end FG (or missed FGs).
Pretty soon, people are going to quit thinking "team X lost to Saints and Ratter."
…and they'll start to realize Orleans is a fairly good team and Spencer's an above avg NFL starter.

  10. LMAO.

The only two games the Saints have a PRAYER of winning are Jets and Titans.

And I'm putting a g down against the Saints on both of them. Even if I lose those games it won't matter, making out big time dropping cash on the line against this bum Rattler every week.
