Trading Hunter Greene Would be a Massive Mistake and the Final Straw for Fans

  1. It would be really dumb. He’s still under control for 4 years at a bargain salary. They would need a package of multiple top prospects to even consider it

  2. There must be some tension between Greene and the FO; or between Greene and the coaching staff. It makes no sense why these rumors are swirling now.

  3. Did anyone read the original Mark Sheldon article? The whole conversation is nothing but a thought experiment about what Krall could do to acquire hitting if budget isn’t there to sign a big bat.

There is a noncommittal quote from Krall that can be inferred as indicating a trade isn’t off the table. But the quote also includes “we haven’t had any conversations with other clubs, I don’t know what the needs are out there.”

They’re not actively shopping Greene, but writers need something to generate clicks when nothing else is happening with 87% of the league.

  4. This is a click bait article based on another article that poses the question “Would trading Hunter Greene help bring back a bat?” so yea there’s no basis in reality for any sort of trade involving Greene

  5. Would it be? Dude can’t stay healthy. He’s not our ace, our “ace” didn’t get to pitch in the WC series. If you can get a good offer, you listen and consider it. We’re deeeeeeep with SP throughout our farm system. When you deal, you deal from a position of strength. For the Reds, that’s SP. I would gladly trade Greene for a middle of the order bat, any day. Twice on Sunday.

  6. Trade Hunter Greene? It’s the most team friendly contact in all of baseball outside of maybe Acuña.

Trading him is a great way to say that you never intend to spend money ever

  7. How has this become a talking point? Why would they trade a young ace under a team friendly contact? Was it some hypothetical posed by a writer that’s evolved to an actual “trade rumor?”

  8. I don’t even understand what a fair trade package would be. Teams don’t usually sign a young ace to a longer contract and then trade them with 3+ years of control left on a team friendly deal.

In my opinion, the better trade is to try and flip Lodolo for Kwan or Taylor Ward(with an extension).

  9. This is the snake eating itself school of content, wherin known idiot (Mark Sheldon) posits something extremely dumb for clicks and then some other less known idiot treats that dumb idea as something worth discussion to generate even more clicks. And here we are…

  10. There’s no “last straw” for us. I’m in it for life – and you know you are too.

  11. All we need is a home run rbi guy and there happens to be a local guy hitting the FA market who fits what we need perfectly.

  12. Hunter Greene has gotten better every year he’s been in the MLB and will likely continue to get better. He’s quite possibly the only known quantity on the team that we can reliably count on to deliver elite performance.

  13. Yeah i agree that would suck. let’s hope our great manager tito would keep him, since he doesn’t like it when star players like him go away.

  14. Hot take: *if* the Reds could get more offensive value than they deem the pitching value of Greene, then I don’t hate the idea. I love Hunter Greene and think he is an opening day starter for the vast majority of teams in the league, but he does only play in 1 of every 5 games. If the Reds significantly upgrade 2 lineup spots, that’s an every game upgrade which may translate to more wins.

Plus, we know Greene doesn’t have the best injury track record and, even with a very favorable contract, the less years on that team friendly deal, the more miles on his arm, and potentially more injuries only lower his value. This could be the peak of his trade value.

Again, I’m not saying I want Krall out there shouting his name like a stock on the trading floor back in the day, but if a team was willing to give up 2+ MLB ready hitters in exchange for Greene, I wouldn’t not pick up the phone either.

  15. Nobody wants the Reds to just “Trade Greene,” but if they can get a really good bat, and a top prospect for him, then maybe trading him makes sense…

If the Reds aren’t going to sign any big free agents for bats, then Greene seems like the trade piece that would get us back the most in return (because he’s really good, and because he’s on a very good contract).

Without Greene, our starting rotation next season could still be really good. I’d rather have him, but if keeping him means we continue to have lineups that can’t hit for average or power, then I’d rather roll the dice and see if we can improve on our biggest weakness.

  16. As a Jays fan, this is probably the dumbest thing the Reds could do. If you’re gonna trade your ace then might as well trade the whole fucking team.

  17. I understood the rationale for trading Castillo, but that one really hurt. Trading Greene under an extremely team friendly contract while we’re on the upswing would make me question my loyalty

  18. It depends on the haul we get back. If it’s like other trades where we send one of our best guys for 4 minor leaguers, a pack of snickerdoodles, and a sandwich to be named later, then no. However, if it’s for 30% of a teams top prospects and a couple guys who are MLB ready and can plug a couple holes we have, then yeah. Especially if Burns and Lowder actually live up to the hype and are our next big starters.

  19. Trading Greene is the fetch of Reds blogs, theyre going to keep trying to make it happen until we all stop rage clicking.

There’s no real benefit to doing it.  First, good luck trying to get your next generation of young players to sign an extension if you trade away the one guys that did with 4 years left on his deal.

Second, theres not way the only way it makes sense to trade him is for a huge bat.  Pitchers have higher value, so any Greene trade would involve bringing back less thay whatvwe trade away.  We”d need a great bat right now, and probably a prospect bat as well to make sense from this side.  I dont see any tram finding value from their side.  Maybe the Tigers are desperate enough for someone to pair with Skubal, but I couldn’t really make something work there from the Reds end.

His value right now is much higher being on the team than being a trade chip.

  20. Unless you’re not trying to win a title and just want to fill the farm teams, which I think is what the reds are doing

  21. The only position player I would trade greene for would be nick kurtz. And that would never happen, so I guess were stuck with a 26 year old, bargain contract, sub 1 WHIP #1 starter for 4 more years.
