MLB Network | Tarik Skubal is X-Factor Game 5 – Mark Derosa BREAKING DOWN Mariners vs Detroit Tigers
Wow. So well said. Look at the stats. Since the start of 2024, he’s not only a showman, he wants everyone to know I’m going to make you work. And for two years in a row now, he has really taken this league by storm. And I hear Na came to your office. Hey, what? He was wearing a black like cloak. He was carrying a candle. Wow. And I could hear that seems that seems a little aggressive. There he is. Naze. He was pres presenting the school manifesto. That’s so good. I said these are getting I emailed him. I said these are getting out of control. We don’t have time. Well, the fact that he’s wearing a cloak that seems to be a little much Maize doesn’t sleep at night, does he? He’s like, this is the breakdown. This is the breakdown. He’s a beautiful mind. I’m trying to keep him humble. He’s getting like national attention now. I don’t know if he’s ready for the moment. We’re going to see if Scoobs is ready for the moment. Oh, he will be. Seattle’s had his number, though. I know. It’s incredible. It’s incredible. They beat him three times this year. All right, so we’ve been doing these setting it up, setting up the matchups, going into what makes him so effective and then maybe how the Mariners bats could potentially attack him game plan wise cuz that’s what we used to do. You go into the hitters meetings, you go in the video room and you kind of come up with some type of plan. It’s not go up to the plate, see ball, hit ball. No, I agree. Wipe out City. And can I tell you one thing? Yeah. when you’re game planning against this guy. I can remember facing a guy like Randy Johnson. Yeah. You know, you got a game plan. Hey man, if we get that one that one pitch, hunt a zone because if you you can’t hunt the plate against a guy like this. Exactly. It’s exactly what it is. So, let’s get into it. Devin, there is boards for days in this thing. They’re all baked in dominant. And when you go through it, listen, if he’s not the best pitcher in the game, he’s two. It’s him and skins. the numbers supported. Look at the back-to back season comparisons. He w he wins the Sai Young in 2024. His numbers in 2025 have been better. I mean, innings, he’s thrown you more innings. The RA is lower. The expected ERA is at 274. Pretty much exactly the same. Fielding, independent pitching on down the line, it’s pretty much stock. So, I want to take in what makes them so effective. We’re going to talk about the high heater, top of the zone. Pause this for me real quick. High heater or top of the zone and then the change up has been the game changer. That’s late sound. But I wanted to to show this overhead shot because for us Case as as hitters, deception plays a huge part in it. Showing me something different that I’m not used to seeing. If you just give me the generic like normal wind up and allow me to time you up and do my toe taps and my leg kicks, but he gives you like elbows. There’s a lot happening here. a lot happening. Standing on the third base side of the mount and almost covering it like Madison Bumgardner to the first base side of the mound. Yeah, his deception is incredible. And I think that’s what makes his change up even that much nasty. You can run this. I just wanted to give that shot of of where he stands on the rubber, how he presents to a hitter. And we got some high heaters, some low homes, and some high heaters. And I love the fact that he’s an entertainer. He really is. He really’s playing he’s playing the game. And that’s what I love about him. But he can run that top rail heater at you with the best of them. Yeah. And that’s what he’s trying to do. He’s he’s setting up the change up. If he can run that top rail heater, you’re tell people at home, I know you’re a left-handed hitter, at least for me as a right-handed hitter. When a lefty is willing to play on the inner half of the plate to right-handed hitters consistently, I mean, you’re messing with fire cuz if you leave it out over, it gets hooked. But not him. But that’s why he’s one of the best cuz because he can navigate that. Most people can’t navigate middle in. Scoo can navigate it on a righty. That’s why he is who he is. Look at the highest average fast ball velocity by a left-handed starter in a pitch tracking area yet. James Paxton, of course, 97.5. A bald eagle landed on his shoulder. Robert, I remember. That’s when you know that’s when you know you’re going to have the highest miles per hour. And then Scooble at 97.4. So, he’s got the heater for days. Okay. Show me the low home and the fast ball because I want to show what it’s Pause at for me. This is what you’re seeing. Okay. And it’s a matter of getting on plane case. You’re taking the AB. Run this. We’re going hot high heater to Mitch Garver. Stay inside it. Mitch. Can I Can I say one with a guy with a guy like Scuba? Could you bring that back for a second? run back and stop it at release. So, so, okay, so he has all the things going on. Stop it right there. Right there. Okay. So, this is where I got to be great. If I’m a hitter, I got to be great right here. So, he’s got all the deception with the wind up. He’s got all that. That’s all great and everything. I have to be able to get to release. It doesn’t matter. He’s got the big leg kick. Doesn’t matter. He’s such a big guy. He’s crossfiring. That doesn’t matter. As a hitter, if you’re the Mariners, I got to be able to lock into that release point tonight, today, and make sure that I’m great right there. So then I got a shot against this guy. Absolutely. Slow run it. Pause. Run that back. Slow click this. Keep going. Boom. Mitch gets him one arm, bottom hand in your life. Boom. Boom. Boom. He gets this out. I know Mitch is a guy likes to Oh, that’s that’s Raleigh. Oh, that’s Cal right there. No, that’s Cal. That’s even in the nasty. No, don’t do anything. Don’t I said yet? 61 62 Jack. Okay. Highest run value on a single pitch type. Okay. So, he’s got the hot heater. Top of the zone, right? The change up’s been his the deadliest pitch in the game. I mean, you can make the argument it is the deadliest pitch in the game. Teroo’s change up with a plus 25 run value. So, let’s get in and take a look at this change up and how it plays at the plate. You talk about the and and we’re seeing that a lot as we dive in on how to how to game plan against these teams offenses. They seem to handle the the heater and the breaking ball. Everyone struggles against change and split for whatever reason. And he’s the best in the business at it. And you see he’s into the whole seam shifted wake. He’s kind of throwing this what presents when it comes out like a two-seater is fumbling at you. Fade fading away. Fading away. Can I tell you a quick story? Yeah. Go ahead. When I was in the postseason with the Detroit Tigers, we’re got we have our hitters meeting. We’re getting ready to face Johan Santana. Yeah. Right. And and and Leland comes into the meeting, which he usually doesn’t do. So, we’re going through Donnie Slots’s going through. Okay. We’re going to face this guy. Next thing you know, here comes Leland. Hey guys, just want to let you know, be ready. You’re going to look stupid tonight once or twice on this change up. Forget about it. Make sure you’re still locked in. Stay aggressive on this guy. But he’s going to make you look bad. And I think that’s the thing about Scooball. As hitters in the box, we’re human beings. You don’t want to look bad. Just know that if you’re facing this guy tonight, you’re going to look bad probably on a swing or two. Stay aggressive on them. Stay up on them and stay out over the plate. I would tell myself going into this game, I am punching out at some point. I just hope it’s not with runners and scoring, right? I want to have that at bat at the right time. Right. Keep running. Go. So, he’s got the dirty change up. And you’ll see the movement profile here. Don’t let this Don’t let this blow your brain up. Stay with me. Jeez. Okay. Movement at release. That’s all we’re looking at. Let’s look at the change up. Just stay on the green. Okay. Movement at release. Movement at the plate. He’s releasing it. It’s just got nastier movement. It’s got downward action and nastier movement. You see the heater holds its shape at the top of the zone and the change up’s got good depth. His sinker’s got better depth. They’ll incorporate that. So the ball’s playing. I mean, it’s got dive on it. It’s going to be a ground. Suzuka. Say a Suzuki right here. No messing around. 97 black in. Keep coming. He seems to want to throw that. Once he gets ahead of you, he wants to elevate and then change up down and away. Be ready to rock. Highest first pitch strike percentage. He leads it 70 almost 72% of the time he’s throw first pitch in the zone. I think we got some hot changes here. Look at this. Pitching leaders minimum 130 pitches. Highest zone whiff. So guys are are swinging and missing at his stuff in the zone. And the highest ch he’s on top of all these boards. Yeah, it’s incredible. That’s what that just shows how deceptive he how good good the arm action is on the change up. So, how do you game plan against him? Look at Bader mixing in space as we transition. I get any better than that? How do how do in game two? What did they do? They recognized this change up pretty good. There was some good spits. Jorge Palano spit on two of them before he took him deep. So, there’s some familiarity there. You take a look at it, TKO’s chase percentage versus change up. Rest of the big leagues is is chasing at 50% of the time. Mariners 34.1 versus the change up. And in game two, 23. They saw it. You got to be great visually against him. You got to start looking. You got to you got to draw a line down the middle cuz he’s electric down here. I almost have to draw a line down the middle and say, “Okay, anything below this line is a chase. I got to just try and keep my eyes up.” Now, are you going to chase? No doubt about it. But visually as a hitter, I got to say to myself, draw this line. And if if it’s down the middle and and I recognize change, it’s going to be a chase. It’s a take for me. That’s what they’re doing great against them. Draw a line. Keep it going. And then like you said, Case, I don’t care about Let’s run this guy’s pitch count up and get to the bullpen. I know they’re bullpen stacks. I know they’ve been out there, but you got no chance if you take this guy to two strikes and try and run his pitch count up. M. No, it’s got to be early contact. This is last year 2024 progressive field and he likes five Lane Thomas. Boom. He likes to attack early. I mean that’s he likes to throw that first pick. He’s coming to get you. All the boards presented and the Mariners are the number one team at that first pitch swinging. Oh, there we go. How we feeling? Hey Maze, I know my stuff too, brother. Hold on. There’s one more for you Lauren. Not change. We’ll get out of here. Look at what teams hit. 0101 first two pitches of the at bat 332 all others duck 54 he might throw a complete game shut 68 pitches you’re going to look stupid once or twice but I miss Kyro maybe the third time case right I love that right uh the Mariners are trying to beat Scooble for the fourth time he hasn’t taken the loss in every game but they have won the last three games in which he has started and remember Scooball started game five of last year’s series gave up that grand slam to Lane Thomas. He’s obviously hoping to reverse that little mini trend and that recent history tonight.

You don't typically do worse against a pitcher the more times you see them… Quite the contrary
Been a Mariners fan since 1995. I was 5 years old. Dan Wilson won't let us make it to the LCS. He's starting Garver at DH. It's OVER.
