Sharks DESPERATE For First Win Against Powerhouse Hurricanes | Rookie Showdown

Can the Sharks get their first win against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference? You’re Locked On Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked on Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. Want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first or second listen of the day. Proudly part of the Lockdown Network. We cover your team every day. And we continue uh with our game day previews as the Sharks take on the Hurricanes tonight. there’s some big news with who’s available for the Hurricanes, uh who the Sharks have in their lineups, all that fun stuff. So, uh let’s get started as we always do by getting to know uh the Carolina Hurricanes. Um and since we’re still very early in the season, we’ll be looking at last season’s numbers to get kind of a nice uh description of where the Hurricanes were at last year. Carolina, if you don’t know, uh they’re pretty good. they were last year. Uh ninth in the NHL when it came to goals, four per game, 3.24, uh 2.8 goals allowed, which was 10th. Uh 18.7% power play, which was not a little surprising there, 25th uh in the NHL, but they had the best PK in the NHL at 83.6%. Uh the Hurricanes finished last year 47 30 and five. Uh Jarvis led the way with goals at 32. Aaho led an assist and points with 45 and 74. Uh we know the Sharks uh bad last year. Goals forward per game at 2.54, goals allowed at 3.78. Their power play about the same as the uh Hurricanes at 18.6 and then the PK was at 74.2%. Tofolei led the team in goals. Ekkund led the team in assists and Celebriny led the team in actual points last season. Um, looking at what the Carolina Hurricanes do well, uh, it’s everything. This this team, uh, is is really good at everything that they do. Um, they this like they’re they Carolina Hurricanes whole philosophy is very much like just control the puck. uh continue to pepper the goalender with as many shots as possible and just kind of believe that the avalanche of like we’ll just eventually overwhelm you. And that is their whole philosophy is we’re just going to get in on the forche. We’re going to just continually outshoot you. We’re going to work harder. Um like that is their whole philosophy and it’s been a very successful philosophy in the regular season. The postseason is a different uh conversation for someone not named me about whether this is a long-term, you know, viable strategy, but in the regular season, this team is one of the best in the NHL night in night out because of their ability to generate offense and because they’re generating so much offense. They do such a good job at limiting defensive chances. And that’s kind of why they get away with some of the goalenders that they, you know, not having premier goalending, uh, like the names involved. That’s usually kind of how they they get away with it is because that they are so good at keeping making you have to work for the puck and keeping the puck away from you. So, uh, very much defenses for nerds philosophy. So, um, big news though for the Carolina Hurricanes as they will be without, uh, premier one of the best defensive defenseman, Jacob Slavven did not make the trip, so he is out for tonight’s game. Uh, top line you have Nikolai Ellers, AO, and Jarvis. Uh, Fetchnikov, Stanovven, and Blake on the second line. Uh, Martinook, Stall, and Kerier on the third. Uh Taylor Hall, you’re this fourth line is uh expensive, but anyway, Taylor Hall, uh Kakane, Kakani, sorry, and then Robinson on the fourth line there. Uh defensively, Miller, who they got from the Rangers this offseason. Chatfield, Chatfield’s pretty good as well. Uh you have Riley and Walker, uh Nishin, uh who’s a very he’s a rookie defenseman, but he’s he’s very good. uh coming over from Russia with Ghost Bear uh Goss Bear. Uh and then uh Booy will be making his NHL debut tonight. So the Sharks will have be facing a rookie goalender. So you know the shutout is incoming. As for your San Jose Sharks, of course, uh the 70s line re put back together. Ekkund celebrating to Foley. Uh Jeff Skinner, Alex Wenberg, and A uh Will Smith will be your second line. Kersev, Misa, Dandria on the third uh with Goodro, Godet, and Reeves your fourth line. Ferraro, Orlav, Dickinson, Clingberg, Lety, Lilligrin, defensive pairings, and the Delulkovich will be starting tonight for the San Jose Sharks. So, uh, what to watch for, of course, uh, number one, Michael Misa’s NHL debut. Uh, so we have a player playing in his first NHL game vers, we have one on each side, right? Uh so something has to give here. Uh either Misa gets his first goal or Busousi gets a shut out. There is no in between there. Uh but um yes, of course, Michael Misa, how does he perform, right? We talked yesterday on on today’s episode uh how I think he’s like playing with Kers and playing with Dandria, not the worst group especially if you’re going to try to shelter his minutes as we assume Ryan Wars is going to try to shelter his minutes. Misa is also expected to be on the second power play unit as well for the San Jose Sharks. Um, but other than Misa, I think the big thing to watch for for San Jose is what happens when if and when you get a lead, right? Because the Sharks have have yet to actually be trailing in a game yet they’re 0 and2 to start this season. Um, if San Jose does get up and does have to try to protect Elite against a team, which I just talked about, their whole philosophy is to just attack, attack, attack, attack. And they do have great defenders though, uh, as well. But like, what type can the Sharks get over the hump, right? Because, uh, we’ve had two excruciating losses from San Jose uh, to start the season. So, how does this team react if and when they get into that that type of position again? And I I think for the Sharks, it would be really smart to try to get out to a early start this game, especially against a rookie goalender uh and Booy. So like the hope you you the hope is or the strategy should be to get out try to just test him as early and as often as possible and again better easier said than done with with this Carolina Hurricanes team who in their own right right they’re going to try to limit as many opportunities but I think for the Sharks that is that is one of the things to also watch for is what type of start do you get what type of finish what type of start do you get from this uh Sharks team because if if you do get an early start. He can get to Booy early. Uh maybe put a little bit of uh seed of doubt in him as the Sharks are trying to uh hopefully protect a lead at some point in this game could go a long way where you know maybe you’re you’re probably going to get outshot by Carolina, but if you can at least take advantage of your opportunities, you probably have a chance in this game. Um, and then I think for Nadelkovic, right, that’s the other thing to watch for is how does he rebound after the Vegas game. Um, because that was, of course, we know what happened in that game. Absolute just uh you’re right, Nadelovic lost his mind for for a couple minutes there and the Sharks end up losing that game. So, uh, how does Nadelovich respond? I expect Nadelovich to have a really strong game. Uh, this is a former team of his, right? He, you know, was a CER finalist for this team a few years ago before they traded him to Detroit. I I think I think Nadulkovich stands on his head tonight. I think the travel from the East Coast to the West Coast for the Hurricanes, uh, I think the Sharks do it. I think they pull it off tonight. Uh, I got them winning three to two. Um, I’m gonna say Celibbrini gets a goal. I think Nadelkovic makes like 40 saves, but I think the Sharks uh I think they get outplayed, but I think they take their care take advantage of their opportunities. I think it balances out what we’ve seen from the the two excruciating losses that we’ve had. I think uh the hockey gods threw us a bone tonight and I think the Sharks win three to2.
