[Heyman] Austin Hedges re-signs with Guardians: $4M plus 500K incentives

  1. Auatin Hedges on the Guardians = Playoffs

this has been true every season**

    **2021 isn’t real

  2. great vibes guy but $4m plus for a back up catcher is a luxury a bottom 5 payroll team cant afford. money would be better spent elsewhere on the roster.

  3. He started to hit better when he was following my instructions, “close your eyes when you swing.”

  4. For anyone complaining, the issue isn’t that we’re bringing him back. He’s a great backup catcher to have. The issue is that 4m is probably more than half of what we’ll spend. Two different topics.

But I don’t know what this means for Huff.

  5. Underwhelming signing, we have two catchers who can’t hit .200. Yan and Roberto spoiled me.

  6. Ahh there’s our big bat we needed in the offseason.

World Series bound now that we still have Hedgehog with us.

  7. Enough of him. I don’t care how good he is in the clubhouse, you can’t say you need to improve the offense, acknowledge that you have a limited budget, and give 4 million to an automatic out. Make him a full time coach or cut him loose

  8. Don’t mess with the pitching magic. Its not guards ball we just play like teams before the DH.

  9. Love it, and him. Our true leader. I will forever die on his hill. Idc if he has 0 hits and -79 rbi

  10. Love it. Dude is the cultural leader of the club and an excellent defensive catcher. Yes, he is a historically bad hitter on a team that desperately needs to improve it’s offense, but I’m sorry, if the offensive production of your backup catcher is what makes or breaks your season, then you’re focusing on the wrong thing. $4m is a no-brainer in my opinion.

  11. Our offensive woes went WAY beyond Austin Hedges this past year. A lot of the way our rotation came together at the right time can directly be attributed to him and Bo stepping it up when it mattered most

That said, and I really can’t emphasize this enough, you must find another major league caliber catcher out there unless you are *sure* David Fry can be one once again.

And you must find a way to unlock Bo Naylors full potential if you refuse to find an offensive upgrade at this position.

Edit: on second thought good deal securing an extra bullpen arm

  12. Any chance they’re prepping him to coach? I’d love to see him work under Vogt and eventually manage.

  13. Our Skubal killer is back!

Unironically a big get for us despite what smooth brains who only think about batting average think, dude is the glue of out clubhouse and gets great performances from our pitchers

  14. Why? We have top prospect cooper ingle on the cusp (he can actually hit the ball) and have Naylor and Fry. Hedges is a waste of 4m and blocks a top prospect. Just when I think the FO has finally learned its lesson they do this. Just sign the guy as a coach if you like his vibes, he can’t hit to save his life.

  15. Worth it if he’s in the plastic-coated locker room smoking a shirtless stogie early September ’26

  16. Sorry to literally all the Hedges defenders but this is a bad move. Hedges can’t hit, and his position either as a backup or a third string (depending on whether you think Fry is going to get those ABs promised/be healthy enough to take them) isn’t going to be worth the 125 crummy ABs he’ll get on the year.

Not to mention Cooper Ingle probably has to come up and get playing time next year in some capacity, so Hedges is blocking him.

Not to mention, the ABS getting implemented next season will likely devalue pitch framing, which is Hedges’ strongest skill.

4 million is not worth a signing with pure intangibles/clubhouse leader/vibes/etc.
