On this day in 2001, Derek Jeter ran into foul territory and flipped into the stands as he made an incredible catch in Game 5 of the ALDS vs. the Athletics. The Yankees came back from down 2-0 in the series to win the series.

Pains me to see Soriano. Love that man.
Would not want to do a trust fall with those fans there to catch me.
Scott Brosius tried to steal an out š
A career defining moment! ššš¶š§Ø
I still cant believe no one had the foresight to catch him…
Haters will say: āhe didnāt need to fall into the stands, he should have just stopped on a dime from his sprint from shortstop and perfectly maintained his balance whilst catching the ballā š¤
Between this play, his play vs Sox in 2004 and McMahon’s diving play this offseason… I realize I’ve never seen an infielder fly into the first base crowd. I’m sure it happens, but can’t recall.
OMG I wish they won the 2001 World Series so badly.
It all came down to Mariano getting a save š¢
I was at this game! Had the perfect view of Jeterās play from the first base side of the upper deck, five rows up. I was worried about him.
They shouldāve won the World Series that year
Crazy that wasn’t even his best defensive play of the series……
Brosius was so switched onā¦great throw too
I was there, got the ticket stub to prove it. Waaaay up in the upper deck, next to 3rd base and sat many rows down from my actual seats. But what an incredible game, has to be one of the best regular season games no? And as Iām typing this I realized it was still the regular season because of 911 and the season started a little later
the analytics nerds will say jeter’s defense was terrible
and maybe you can crunch some numbers that provide such evidence
but boy does jeter have an impressive defensive highlight reel.
